Magnetic excitations in the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising model with external fields and their experimental realizations

The one dimensional (1D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising model, a prototype quantum many-body system, has been intensively studied for many years. In this review, after a short introduction on some basic concepts of group theory for the octahedral group, a detailed pedagogical framework is laid down to derive the low-energy effective Hamiltonian for the Co-based materials. The 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising model is obtained when applying the analysis to quasi-1D antiferromagnetic materials $\rm BaCo_2V_2O_8$ and $\rm SrCo_2V_2O_8$. After the preparation, we review the theoretical progresses of a variety of novel magnetic excitations and emergent physics in the 1D spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising model, and further summarize their recent experimental realizations.

Observation of E8 Particles in an Ising Chain Antiferromagnet

Near the transverse-field induced quantum critical point of the Ising chain, an exotic dynamic spectrum consisting of exactly eight particles was predicted, which is uniquely described by an emergent quantum integrable field theory with the symmetry of the $E_8$ Lie algebra, but rarely explored experimentally. Here we use high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy to resolve quantum spin dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ in an applied transverse field. By comparing to an analytical calculation of the dynamical spin correlations, we identify $E_8$ particles as well as their two-particle excitations.

Dispersions of Many-Body Bethe strings

Complex bound states of magnetic excitations, known as Bethe string, were predicted almost a century ago to exist in one-dimensional quantum magnets 1. The dispersions of the string states have so far remained the subject of intensive theoretical studies 2-7. By performing neutron scattering experiments on the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet SrCo2V2O8 in high longitudinal magnetic fields, we reveal in detail the dispersion relations of the string states over the full Brillouin zone, as well as their magnetic field dependences. Furthermore the characteristic energy, the scattering intensity and linewidth of the observed string states exhibit excellent agreement with our precise Bethe Ansatz calculations. Our results establish the important role of string states in the quantum spin dynamics of one-dimensional systems, and will invoke studies of their dynamical properties in more general many-body systems.

Phase diagram and quantum criticality of Heisenberg spin chains with Ising-like interchain couplings -- Implication to YbAlO$_3$

Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets, we study the phase diagram of $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The interchain interactions is shown to enhance longitudinal spin correlations to stabilize an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave order at low temperatures. With increasing field the ground state changes to a canted antiferromagnetic order until the magnetization fully saturates above a quantum critical point controlled by the $(3+2)$D XY universality. Increasing temperature in the quantum critical regime the system experiences a fascinating dimension crossover to a universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The calculated NMR relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates this Luttinger liquid behavior survives a broad field and temperature regime. Our results determine the global phase diagram and quantitative features of quantum criticality of a general model for quasi-one-dimensional spin chain compounds, and thus lay down a concrete ground to the study on these materials.

Universality of Heisenberg-Ising chain in external fields

Motivated by the recent surge of transverse-field experiments on quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets Sr(Ba)Co$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, we investigate the quantum phase transition in a Heisenberg-Ising chain under a combination of two in-plane inter-perpendicular transverse fields and a four-period longitudinal field, where the in-plane transverse field is either uniform or staggered. We show that the model can be unitary mapped to the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model (1DTFIM) when the $x$ and $y$ components of the spin interaction and the four-period field are absent. When these two terms are present, following both analytical and numerical efforts, we demonstrate that the system undergoes a second-order quantum phase transition with increasing transverse fields, where the critical exponents as well as the central charge fall into the universality of 1DTFIM. Our results naturally identify the 1DTFIM universality of 1D quantum phase transitions observed in the existed experiments in Sr(Ba)Co$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ with transverse field applied along either [100] or [110] direction. Upon varying the tuning parameters a critical surface with 1DTFIM universality is determined and silhouetted to exhibit the general presence of the universality in a much wider scope of models than conventional understanding. Thus our results provide a broad guiding framework to facilitate the experimental realization of 1DTFIM universality in real materials.

From confined spinons to emergent fermions: Observation of elementary magnetic excitations in a transverse-field Ising chain

We report on spectroscopy study of elementary magnetic excitations in an Ising-like antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ as a function of temperature and applied transverse magnetic field up to 25 T. An optical as well as an acoustic branch of confined spinons, the elementary excitations at zero field, are identified in the antiferromagnetic phase below the Néel temperature of 5 K and described by a one-dimensional Schrödinger equation. The confinement can be suppressed by an applied transverse field and a quantum disordered phase is induced at 7 T. In this disordered paramagnetic phase, we observe three emergent fermionic excitations with different transverse-field dependencies. The nature of these modes is clarified by studying spin dynamic structure factor of a 1D transverse-field Heisenberg-Ising (XXZ) model using the method of infinite time evolving block decimation. Our work reveals emergent quantum phenomena and provides a concrete system for testifying theoretical predications of one-dimension quantum spin models.

Magnetic and Ising quantum phase transitions in a model for isoelectronically tuned iron pnictides

Considerations of the bad-metal behavior led to an early proposal for a quantum critical point under a P for As doping in the iron pnictides, which has since been experimentally observed. We study here an effective model for the isoelectronically tuned pnictides using a large-$N$ approach. The model contains antiferromagnetic and Ising-nematic order parameters appropriate for $J_1$-$J_2$ exchange-coupled local moments on an Fe square lattice, and a damping caused by coherent itinerant electrons. The zero-temperature magnetic and Ising transitions are concurrent and essentially continuous. The order-parameter jumps are very small, and are further reduced by the inter-plane coupling; quantum criticality hence occurs over a wide dynamical range. Our results provide the basis for further studies on the quantum critical properties in the P-doped iron arsenides.

Finite temperature spin dynamics in a perturbed quantum critical Ising chain with an $E_8$ symmetry

A spectrum exhibiting $E_8$ symmetry is expected to arise when a small longitudinal field is introduced in the transverse-field Ising chain at its quantum critical point. Evidence for this spectrum has recently come from neutron scattering measurements in cobalt niobate, a quasi one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. Unlike its zero-temperature counterpart, the finite-temperature dynamics of the model has not yet been determined. We study the dynamical spin structure factor of the model at low frequencies and nonzero temperatures, using the form factor method. Its frequency dependence is singular, but differs from the diffusion form. The temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate has an activated form, whose prefactor we also determine. We propose NMR experiments as a means to further test the applicability of the $E_8$ description for CoNb$_2$O$_6$.

Entropy accumulation near quantum critical points: effects beyond hyperscaling

Entropy accumulation near a quantum critical point was expected based on general scaling arguments, and has recently been explicitly observed. We explore this issue further in two canonical models for quantum criticality, with particular attention paid to the potential effects beyond hyperscaling. In the case of a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model, we derive the specific scaling form of the free energy. It follows from this scaling form that the singular temperature dependence at the critical field has a vanishing prefactor but the singular field dependence at zero temperature is realized. For the spin-density-wave model above its upper critical dimension, we show that the dangerously irrelevant quartic coupling comes into the free energy in a delicate way but in the end yields only subleading contributions beyond hyperscaling. We conclude that entropy accumulation near quantum critical point is a robust property of both models.
