Single diffractive hard exclusive processes for the study of generalized parton distributions

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are important nonperturbative functions that provide tomographic images of partonic structures of hadrons. We introduce a type of exclusive processes, to be referred to as single diffractive hard exclusive processes (SDHEPs). We discuss the necessary and sufficient conditions for SDHEPs to be factorized into GPDs. We demonstrate that the SDHEP is not only sufficiently generic to cover all known processes for extracting GPDs, but is also well motivated for the search of new processes for the study of GPDs. We examine the sensitivity of the SDHEP to the parton momentum fraction $x$ dependence of GPDs.

Complementarity of experimental and lattice QCD data on pion parton distributions

We extract pion parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a Monte Carlo global QCD analysis of experimental data together with reduced Ioffe time pseudo-distributions and matrix elements of current-current correlators generated from lattice QCD. By including both experimental and lattice QCD data, our analysis rigorously quantifies both the uncertainties of the pion PDFs and systematic effects intrinsic to the lattice QCD observables. The reduced Ioffe time pseudo-distributions significantly decrease the uncertainties on the PDFs, while the current-current correlators are limited by the systematic effects associated with the lattice. Consistent with recent phenomenological determinations, the behavior of the valence quark distribution of the pion at large momentum fraction is found to be $\sim (1-x)^{ β_{\rm eff}}$ with $β_{\rm eff} \approx 1.0-1.2$.

Exclusive production of a pair of high transverse momentum photons in pion-nucleon collisions for extracting generalized parton distributions

We show that exclusive production of a pair of high transverse momentum photons in pion-nucleon collisions can be systematically studied in QCD factorization approach if the photon's transverse momentum $q_T$ with respect to the colliding pion is much greater than $Λ_{\rm QCD}$. We demonstrate that the leading power non-perturbative contributions to the scattering amplitudes of this exclusive process are process-independent and can be systematically factorized into universal pion's distribution amplitudes (DAs) and nucleon's generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which are convoluted with corresponding infrared safe and perturbatively calculable short-distance hard parts. The correction to this factorized expression is suppressed by powers of $1/q_T$. We demonstrate quantitatively that this new type of exclusive processes is not only complementary to existing processes for extracting GPDs, but also capable of providing an enhanced sensitivity to the dependence of both DAs and GPDs on the active parton's momentum fraction $x$. We also introduce additional, but the same type of exclusive observables to enhance our capability to explore GPDs, in particular, their $x$-dependence.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Parton Physics

In this document, we summarize the status and challenges of calculating parton physics in lattice QCD for the US Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. "Snowmass"). While PDF-moments calculations have been very successful and been continuously improved, new methods have been developed to calculate distributions directly in $x$-space. Many recent lattice studies have been focused on calculating isovector PDFs of the pion and nucleon, learning to control systematics associated with excited-state contamination, renormalization and continuum extrapolations, pion-mass and finite-volume effects, etc. Although in some cases, the lattice results are already competitive with experimental data, to reach the level of precision in a wide range of $x$ for unpolarized nucleon PDFs impactful for future collider physics remains a challenge, and may require exascale supercomputing power. The new theoretical methods open the door for calculating other partonic observables which will be the focus of the experimental program in nuclear physics, including generalized parton distributions and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. A fruitful interplay between experimental data and lattice-QCD calculations will usher in a new era for parton physics and hadron structure.

Subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production in QCD factorization approach

We report the current understanding of heavy quarkonium production at high transverse momentum ($p_T$) in hadronic collisions in terms of QCD factorization. In this presentation, we highlight the role of subleading power corrections to heavy quarkonium production, which are essential to describe the $p_T$ spectrum of quarkonium at a relatively lower $p_T$. We also introduce prescription to match QCD factorization to fixed-order NRQCD factorization calculations for quarkonium production at low $p_T$.

Extraction of Next-to-Next-to-Leading-Order PDFs from Lattice QCD Calculations

We present for the first time complete next-to-next-to-leading-order coefficient functions to match flavor non-singlet quark correlation functions in position space, which are calculable in lattice QCD, to parton distribution functions (PDFs). Using PDFs extracted from experimental data and our calculated matching coefficients, we predict valence-quark correlation functions that can be confronted by lattice QCD calculations. The uncertainty of our predictions is greatly reduced with higher order matching coefficients. By performing Fourier transformation, we also obtain matching coefficients for corresponding quasi-PDFs and pseudo-PDFs. Our method of calculations can be readily generalized to evaluate the matching coefficients for sea-quark and gluon correlation functions, putting the program to extract partonic structure of hadrons from lattice QCD calculations to be comparable with and complementary to that from experimental measurements.

Confronting lattice parton distributions with global QCD analysis

We present the first Monte Carlo based global QCD analysis of spin-averaged and spin-dependent parton distribution functions (PDFs) that includes nucleon isovector matrix elements in coordinate space from lattice QCD. We investigate the degree of universality of the extracted PDFs when the lattice and experimental data are treated under the same conditions within the Bayesian likelihood analysis. For the unpolarized sector, we find rather weak constraints from the current lattice data on the phenomenological PDFs, and difficulties in describing the lattice matrix elements at large spatial distances. In contrast, for the polarized PDFs we find good agreement between experiment and lattice data, with the latter providing significant constraints on the spin-dependent isovector quark and antiquark distributions.

Intrinsic Transverse Momentum and Evolution in Weighted Spin Asymmetries

The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) and collinear higher twist theoretical factorization frameworks are the most frequently used approaches to describing spin dependent hard cross sections weighted by and integrated over transverse momentum. Of particular interest is the contribution from small transverse momentum associated with the target bound state. In phenomenological applications, this contribution is often investigated using transverse momentum weighted integrals that sharply regulate the large transverse momentum contribution, for example with Gaussian parametrizations. Since the result is a kind of hybrid of TMD and collinear (inclusive) treatments, it is important to establish if and how the formalisms are related in applications to weighted integral observables. The suppression of a large transverse momentum tail, for example, can potentially affect the type of evolution that is applicable. We find that a naive version of a widely used identity relating the $k_T^2$-weighted and integrated Sivers TMD function to a renormalized twist-3 function has strongly ambiguous ultraviolet contributions, and that corrections to it are not necessarily perturbatively suppressed. We discuss the implications for applications, arguing in particular that the relevant evolution for transverse momentum weighted and integrated cross sections with sharp effective large transverse momentum cutoffs is of the TMD form rather than the standard renormalization group evolution of collinear correlation functions.

Pion valence quark distribution from current-current correlation in lattice QCD

We extract the pion valence quark distribution $q^π_{\rm v}(x)$ from lattice QCD (LQCD) calculated matrix elements of spacelike correlations of one vector and one axial vector current analyzed in terms of QCD collinear factorization, using a new short-distance matching coefficient calculated to one-loop accuracy. We derive the Ioffe time distribution of the two-current correlations in the physical limit by investigating the finite lattice spacing, volume, quark mass, and higher-twist dependencies in a simultaneous fit of matrix elements computed on four gauge ensembles. We find remarkable consistency between our extracted $q^π_{\rm v}(x)$ and that obtained from experimental data across the entire $x$-range. Further, we demonstrate that the one-loop matching coefficient relating the LQCD matrix computed in position space to the $q_{\rm v}^π(x)$ in momentum space has well-controlled behavior with Ioffe time. This justifies that LQCD calculated current-current correlations are good observables for extracting partonic structures by using QCD factorization, which complements to the global effort to extract partonic structure from experimental data.

Power corrections in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scatterings at fixed target energies

The COMPASS collaboration published precise data on production cross section of charged hadrons in lepton-hadron semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, showing almost an order of magnitude larger than next-to-leading order QCD calculations when $P_{h_T}$ and $z_h$ are sufficiently large. We explore the role of power corrections to the theoretical calculations, and quantitatively demonstrate that the power corrections are extremely important for these data when the final-state multiplicity is low and the production kinematics is near the edge of phase space. Our finding motivates more detailed studies on power corrections for upcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab, as well as the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Predictive power of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions

We investigate the predictive power of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions as a function of the light-cone momentum fraction $x$ and the hard scale $Q$ defined by the process. We apply the saddle point approximation to the unpolarized quark and gluon transverse momentum distributions and evaluate the position of the saddle point as a function of the kinematics. We determine quantitatively that the predictive power for an unpolarized transverse momentum distribution is maximal in the large-$Q$ and small-$x$ region. For cross sections the predictive power of the TMD factorization formalism is generally enhanced by considering the convolution of two distributions, and we explicitly consider the case of $Z$ and $H^0$ boson production. In the kinematic regions where the predictive power is not maximal, the distributions are sensitive to the non-perturbative hadron structure. Thus, these regions are critical for investigating hadron tomography in a three-dimensional momentum space.

QCD factorization and universality of jet cross sections in heavy-ion collisions

We review a recently proposed phenomenological framework to establish the notions of QCD factorization and universality of jet cross sections in the heavy-ion environment. First results of a global analysis of the nuclear modification factor of inclusive jets are presented where we extract medium modified jet functions using a Monte Carlo sampling approach. We observe that gluon jets are significantly more suppressed than quark jets. In addition, we study the jet radius dependence of the inclusive jet cross section in heavy-ion collisions and comment on a recent measurement from CMS. By considering for example jet substructure observables it will be possible to test the universality of the extracted medium jet functions. We thus expect that the presented results will eventually allow for extractions of medium properties with a reduced model bias.

Nucleon Structure from Lattice QCD Calculations

Parton distribution and correlation functions describe the relation between a hadron and the quarks and gluons (or collectively, the partons) within it, and carry rich information on hadron's partonic structure that cannot be calculated by QCD perturbation theory. In this talk, I will review what lattice QCD can and cannot do for calculating the parton distribution and correlation functions, and the new ideas and efforts around the world to explore nucleon structure from lattice QCD calculations by combining the strength of both lattice QCD and perturbative QCD in such a way that is complementary to our on-going effort to extract these fundamental functions from experimental data.

Next-to-leading order transverse momentum broadening for Drell-Yan production in p+A collisions

We present the nuclear transverse momentum broadening for Drell-Yan lepton pair production in p+A collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in powers of strong coupling constant $α_s$. We verify that the transverse momentum weighted differential cross section in NLO perturbative QCD (pQCD) at twist-4 can be factorized into the convolution of parton distribution function of an active parton in the projectile proton, a twist-4 multiparton correlation function of the target nucleus, and perturbatively calculable hard coefficient function. We identify a QCD evolution equation for such a twist-4 nuclear gluon-quark correlation function, and verify its universality -- its process independence. This finding demonstrates the prediction power of pQCD factorization approach for studying parton multiple scattering in nuclear medium.

Practical quasi parton distribution functions

A completely new strategy to calculate parton distribution functions on the lattice has recently been proposed. In this method, lattice calculable observables, called quasi distributions, are related to normal distributions. The quasi distributions are known to contain power-law UV divergences arise from a Wilson line in the non-local operator, while the normal distributions only have logatithmic UV divergences. We propose possible method to subtract the power divegence to make the matching of the quasi with the normal distributions well-defined. We also demonstrate the matching of the quasi quark distribution between continuum and lattice implementing the power divergence subtraction. The matching calculations are carried out by one-loop perturbation.

Hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum

We introduce a modified factorization formalism in quantum chromodynamics for hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum $p_T$. When $p_T$ is much larger than the invariant mass $Q$ of the vector boson, this new factorization formalism systematically resums the large fragmentation logarithms, $α_s^m\ln^m(p_T^2/Q^2)$, to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$. Using our modified factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions for $W$ and $Z$ boson production at high $p_T$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. Our NLO results are about $5\%$ larger in normalization, and they show improved convergence and moderate reduction of the scale variation compared to the NLO predictions derived in a conventional fixed-order perturbative expansion.

Some future opportunities and potentials of PHENIX Experiment are also discussed.

QCD factorization for high $p_T$ heavy quarkonium production

In this talk, we present the QCD factorization formula for heavy quarkonium production at large $p_T$ with factorized leading-power and next-to-leading power contributions in the $1/p_T$ expansion. We show that the leading order analytical calculations in this QCD factorization approach can reproduce effectively the full next-to-leading order numerical results derived using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading power contributions are crucial to the description of the channels that are the most relevant for the rate as well as polarization of $J/ψ$ production at current collider energies.

Electron-Ion Collider - taking us to the next QCD frontier

In this talk, I demonstrate that the proposed Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will be an ideal and unique future facility to address many overarching questions about QCD and strong interaction physics at one place. The EIC will be the world's first polarized electron-proton (and light ion), as well as the first electron-nucleus collider at flexible collision energies. With its high luminosity and beam polarization, the EIC distinguishes itself from HERA and the other fixed target electron-hadron facilities around the world. The EIC is capable of taking us to the next QCD frontier to explore the glue that binds us all.

Factorized power expansion for high-$p_T$ heavy quarkonium production

We show that when the factorized cross section for heavy quarkonium production includes next-to-leading power (NLP) contributions associated with the production of the heavy quark pair at short distances, it naturally reproduces all high $p_T$ results calculated in non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. This extended formalism requires fragmentation functions for heavy quark pairs, as well as for light partons. When these fragmentation functions are themselves calculated using NRQCD, we find that two of the four leading NRQCD production channels, ${^3\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{1}^{[1]}}$ and ${^1\hspace{-0.6mm}S_{0}^{[8]}}$, are dominated by the NLP contributions for a very wide $p_T$ range. The large next-to-leading order corrections of NRQCD are absorbed into the leading order of the first power correction. The impact of this finding on the heavy quarkonium production and its polarization is discussed.

Heavy quarkonium fragmentation functions from a heavy quark pair. I. $S$ wave

A QCD factorization formalism was recently proposed for evaluating heavy quarkonium production at large $p_T$ at collider energies. With systematically calculated short-distance partonic hard parts and evolution kernels of fragmentation functions (FFs), the predictive power of this factorization approach relies on our knowledge of a large number of universal FFs at an input factorization scale $μ_0\gtrsim 2m_Q$ with heavy quark mass $m_Q$. With the large heavy quark mass, the relative motion of the heavy quark pair inside a heavy quarkonium is effectively non-relativistic. We evaluate these universal input FFs using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization, and express the large number of FFs in terms of a few universal NRQCD long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) with perturbatively calculated coefficients. We derive complete contributions to the single-parton FFs at both ${\cal O}(α_s)$ and ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$, and the heavy quark pair FFs at ${\cal O}(α_s)$. We present detailed derivation for all contributions involving LDMEs of $S$-wave NRQCD $Q\bar{Q}$-states ($P$-wave contributions in a companion paper). Our results bridge the gap between the QCD factorization formalism and its phenomenological applications.

Heavy quarkonium fragmentation functions from a heavy quark pair. II. $P$ wave

Recently, a new perturbative QCD factorization formalism for heavy quarkonium production at a large transverse momentum was proposed. Phenomenological application of this new approach relies on our knowledge of a large number of universal fragmentation functions (FFs) at an input factorization scale $μ_0\gtrsim 2m_Q$ with heavy quark mass $m_Q$, which are nonperturbative, and in principle, should be extracted from data. With heavy quark mass $m_Q\gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, we calculate these input FFs in terms of non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. In a companion paper, we calculated these input FFs in NRQCD factorization approach including all contributions from $S$-wave NRQCD $Q\bar{Q}$-states. In this paper, we calculate contributions to the heavy quark-pair FFs from all $P$-wave NRQCD $Q\bar{Q}$-states.

Heavy Quarkonium Production at Collider Energies: Factorization and Evolution

We present a factorization formalism for inclusive production of heavy quarkonia of large transverse momentum, $p_T$ at collider energies, including both leading power (LP) and next-to-leading power (NLP) behavior in $p_T$. We demonstrate that both LP and NLP contributions can be factorized in terms of perturbatively calculable short-distance partonic coefficient functions and universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions, and derive the evolution equations that are implied by the factorization. We identify projection operators for all channels of the factorized LP and NLP infrared safe short-distance partonic hard parts, and corresponding operator definitions of fragmentation functions. For the NLP, we focus on the contributions involving the production of a heavy quark pair, a necessary condition for producing a heavy quarkonium. We evaluate the first non-trivial order of evolution kernels for all relevant fragmentation functions, and discuss the role of NLP contributions.

Heavy Quarkonium Production at Collider Energies: Partonic Cross Section and Polarization

We calculate the ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ short-distance, QCD collinear-factorized coefficient functions for all partonic channels that include the production of a heavy quark pair at short distances. This provides the first power correction to the collinear-factorized inclusive hadronic production of heavy quarkonia at large transverse momentum, $p_T$, including the full leading-order perturbative contributions to the production of heavy quark pairs in all color and spin states employed in NRQCD treatments of this process. We discuss the role of the first power correction in the production rates and the polarizations of heavy quarkonia in high energy hadronic collisions. The consistency of QCD collinear factorization and non-relativistic QCD factorization applied to heavy quarkonium production is also discussed.

Novel Phenomenology of Parton Distributions from the Drell-Yan Process

The Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair production in hadronic collisions provides a unique tool complementary to the Deep-Inelastic Scattering for probing the partonic substructures in hadrons. We review key concepts, approximations, and progress for QCD factorization of the Drell-Yan process in terms of collinear or transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. We present experimental results from recent fixed-target Drell-Yan as well as $W$ and $Z$ boson production at colliders, focussing on the topics of flavor structure of the nucleon sea as well as the extraction of novel Sivers and Boer-Mulders functions via single transverse spin asymmetries and azimuthal lepton angular distribution of the Drell-Yan process. On the Momentum Dependence of the Flavor Structure of the Nucleon Sea

Difference between the $\bar u$ and $\bar d$ sea quark distributions in the proton was first observed in the violation of the Gottfried sum rule in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) experiments. The parton momentum fraction $x$ dependence of this difference has been measured over the region $0.02 < x < 0.35$ from Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive DIS experiments. The Drell-Yan data suggested a possible sign-change for $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ near $x \sim 0.3$, which has not yet been explained by existing theoretical models. We present an independent evidence for the $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ sign-change at $x \sim 0.3$ from an analysis of the DIS data. We further discuss the $x$-dependence of $\bar d(x)-\bar u(x)$ in the context of meson cloud model and the lattice QCD formulation.

Probing nuclear dynamics in jet production with a global event shape

We study single jet production in electron-nucleus collisions e^- + N_A -> J + X, using the 1-jettiness (τ_1) global event shape. It inclusively quantifies the pattern of radiation in the final state, gives enhanced sensitivity to soft radiation at wide angles from the nuclear beam and final-state jet, and facilitates the resummation of large Sudakov logarithms associated with the veto on additional jets. Through their effect on the observed pattern of radiation, 1-jettiness can be a useful probe of nuclear PDFs and power corrections from dynamical effects in the nuclear medium. This formalism allows for the standard jet shape analysis while simultaneously providing sensitivity to soft radiation at wide angles from the jet. We use a factorization framework for cross-sections differential in $τ_1$ and the transverse momentum (P_{J_T}) and rapidity (y) of the jet, in the region τ_1<< P_{J_T}. The restriction $τ_1 << P_{J_T}$ allows only soft radiation between the nuclear beam and jet directions, thereby acting as a veto on additional jets. This region is also insensitive to the details of the jet algorithm, allowing for better theoretical control over resummation, while providing enhanced sensitivity to nuclear medium effects. We give numerical results at leading twist, with resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) level of accuracy, for a variety of nuclear targets. Such studies would be ideal for the EIC and the LHeC proposals for a future electron-ion collider, where a range of nuclear targets are planned.

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

QCD Factorization and PDFs from Lattice QCD Calculation

In this talk, we review a QCD factorization based approach to extract parton distribution and correlation functions from lattice QCD calculation of single hadron matrix elements of quark-gluon operators. We argue that although the lattice QCD calculations are done in the Euclidean space, the nonperturbative collinear behavior of the matrix elements are the same as that in the Minkowski space, and could be systematically factorized into parton distribution functions with infrared safe matching coefficients. The matching coefficients can be calculated perturbatively by applying the factorization formalism on to asymptotic partonic states.

Nuclear modification of vector boson production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC

In anticipating the upcoming proton-lead run at the LHC in the near future, we present predictions for the nuclear modification factor of transverse momentum spectrum of $Z^0$ production and transverse momentum broadening of vector boson ($J/ψ$, $Υ$, $W/Z^0$) production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV, respectively. We find that the measurement of nuclear modification factor of $Z^0$ production provides a clean and unambiguous test of the nuclear anti-shadowing proposed in the recent EPS09. In addition, the dramatic difference in transverse momentum broadening between the heavy quarkonium and $W/Z^0$ production could be a signature prediction of QCD parton multiple scattering, and it provides valuable informations on color neutralization of a produced heavy quark pair when it transmutes into a physical quarkonium.

The 1-Jettiness event shape for DIS with NNLL resummation

We propose the use of 1-jettiness, a global event shape, for exclusive single jet production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We derive a factorization formula, using the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, differential in the transverse momentum and rapidity of the jet and the 1-jettiness event shape. It provides a quantitative measure of the shape of the final-state QCD radiation in the presence of the hard jet, providing a useful powerful probe of QCD and nuclear physics. For example, one expects differences in the observed pattern of QCD radiation between large and small nuclei and these can be quantified by the 1-jettiness event shape. Numerical results are given for this new DIS event shape at leading twist with resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) level of accuracy, for a variety of nuclear targets. Such studies would be ideal at a future EIC or LHeC electron-ion collider, where a range of nuclear targets are planned.

Universal Suppression of Heavy Quarkonium Production in pA Collisions at Low Transverse Momentum

The nuclear suppression of heavy quarkonium production at low transverse momentum in pA collisions in high energy scatterings is investigated in the small-x factorization formalism. A universal suppression is found in the large Nc limit between the two formalisms to describe the heavy quarkonium production: the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) and the color-evaporation model (CEM). This provides an important probe to the saturation momentum at small-x in big nucleus. We also comment on the phenomenological applications of our results.

N-Jettiness as a probe of nuclear dynamics

We propose the use of N-jettiness (τ_N), a global event shape variable, as a probe of nuclear dynamics in lepton-nucleus collisions. It characterizes the amount of soft radiation between the jet and nuclear beam directions. We write down the factorization for the 1-jettiness ($τ_1$) distribution for the production of a single hard jet (J) in lepton-nucleus collisions: \ell+A(P) \to J(P_{J})+X. Each nuclear target gives rise to a unique pattern radiation, determined by nuclear dynamics, that can be quantified by the τ_1-distribution. Up to power corrections, the τ_1-distribution allows for a direct measurement of the nuclear PDFs. Additional nuclear-dependent effects will be dominated through power corrections of size $\sim Q_s^2(A)/(P_{JT}τ_1)$ where $Q_s(A)$ is a dynamical scale sensitive to nuclear medium effects. Such nuclear-dependent effects and the dependence of Q_s(A) on the nuclear atomic number $A$ can be probed through a dedicated program of precision measurements of τ_1-distributions for various nuclei and kinematics. We give numerical results for the 1-jettiness distribution for the simplest case of a proton target at next-to-leading-log accuracy.

On the linearly polarized gluon distributions in the color dipole model

We show that the linearly polarized gluon distributions appear in the color dipole model as we derive the full cross sections of the DIS dijet production and the Drell-Yan dijet ($γ^*$ jet correlation) process. Together with the normal Weizsäcker-Williams gluon distribution, the linearly polarized one will contribute to the DIS dijet production cross section as the coefficient of the $\cos(2 Δϕ) $ term in the correlation limit. We also derive the exact results for the cross section of the Drell-Yan dijet process, and find that the linearly polarized dipole gluon distribution which is identical to the normal dipole gluon distribution involves in the cross section. The results obtained in this paper agree with the previous transverse momentum dependent factorization study. We further derive the small-$x$ evolution of these linearly polarized gluon distributions and find that they rise as $x$ gets small at high energy.

QCD evolution of naive-time-reversal-odd parton distribution functions

We reexamine the derivation of the leading order QCD evolution equations of twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions, $T_{q,F}(x,x)$ and $T^{(σ)}_{q,F}(x,x)$, which are the first transverse-momentum-moment of the naive-time-reversal-odd parton distribution functions - the Sivers and Boer-Mulders function, respectively. The evolution equations were derived by several groups with apparent differences. The QCD Evolution of the Sivers Function

We extend the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism to apply it to the spin-dependence governed by the Sivers function. We use it to give a correct numerical QCD evolution of existing fixed-scale fits of the Sivers function. With the aid of approximations useful for the non-perturbative region, we present the results as parametrizations of a Gaussian form in transverse momentum space, rather than in the Fourier conjugate transverse coordinate space normally used in the CSS formalism. They are specifically valid at small transverse momentum. Since evolution has been applied, our results can be used to make predictions for Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at energies different from those where the original fits were made. Our evolved functions are of a form that they can be used in the same parton model factorization formulas as used in the original fits, but now with a predicted scale dependence in the fit parameters. We also present a method by which our evolved functions can be corrected to allow for twist-3 contributions at large parton transverse momentum.

An Observation Concerning the Process Dependence of the Sivers Functions

The $k_\perp$-moment of a quark's Sivers function is known to be related to the corresponding twist-three quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$. The two functions have been extracted from data for single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and in single-inclusive hadron production in $pp$ collisions, respectively. Performing a consistent comparison of the extracted functions, we find that they show a "sign mismatch": while the magnitude of the functions is roughly consistent, the $k_\perp$-moment of the Sivers function has opposite sign from that of $T_{q,F}(x, x)$, both for up and for down quarks. Barring any inconsistencies in our theoretical understanding of the Sivers functions and their process dependence, the implication of this mismatch is that either, the Sivers effect is not dominantly responsible for the observed single-spin asymmetries in $pp$ collisions or, the current semi-inclusive lepton scattering data do not sufficiently constrain the $k_\perp$-moment of the quark Sivers functions. Both possibilities strengthen the case for further experimental investigations of single-spin asymmetries in high-energy $pp$ and $ep$ scattering.

Exploring the structure of the proton through polarization observables in l p \to jet X

We present results for a complete set of polarization observables for jet production in lepton proton collision, where the final state lepton is not observed. The calculations are carried out in collinear factorization at the level of Born diagrams. For all the observables we also provide numerical estimates for typical kinematics of a potential future Electron Ion Collider. On the basis of this numerical study, the prospects for the transverse single target spin asymmetry are particularly promising. This observable is given by a certain quark-gluon correlation function, which has a direct relation to the transverse momentum dependent Sivers parton distribution.

We present a perturbative QCD factorization formalism for the production of heavy quarkonia of large transverse momentum $p_T$ at collider energies, which includes both the leading power (LP) and next-to-leading power (NLP) contributions to the cross section in the $m_Q^2/p_T^2$ expansion for heavy quark mass $m_Q$. We estimate fragmentation functions in the non-relativistic QCD formalism, and reproduce the bulk of the large enhancement found in explicit NLO calculations in the color singlet model. Heavy quarkonia produced from NLP channels prefer longitudinal polarization.

Quark-gluon correlation functions relevant to single transverse spin asymmetries

We investigate the relative size of various twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions relevant to single transverse spin asymmetries (SSAs) in a quark-diquark model of the nucleon. We calculate the quark-gluon correlation function $T_{q,F}(x, x)$ that is responsible for the gluonic pole contribution to the SSAs, as well as $T_{q,F}(0, x)$ and $T_{Δ{q}, F}(0, x)$ responsible for the fermionic pole contributions. We find in both cases of a scalar diquark and an axial-vector diquark that at the first nontrivial order only the $\tq(x, x)$ is finite while all other quark-gluon correlation functions vanish. Using the same model, we evaluate quark Sivers function and discuss its relation to the $\tq(x, x)$. We also discuss the implication of our finding to the phenomenological studies of the SSAs.

Single transverse spin asymmetry of dilepton production near $Z^0$ pole

Using the latest quark Sivers functions extracted from the global analysis of available data on single transverse spin asymmetry (SSA), we calculate the SSA of Drell-Yan inclusive production of lepton pairs of invariant mass $Q$ at both $4<Q<9$ GeV and $Q\sim M_Z$ in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions at RHIC energies. We find that the features of the asymmetry $A_N$ for $Q\sim M_Z$ are significantly different from that when $4<Q<9$ GeV. The $A_N$ near $Z^0$ pole is positive and sizable in the central rapidity region while the $A_N$ at low $Q$ is negative and only sizable in the forward rapidity region. We show that the size of $A_N$ is sufficiently large for a wide range of $Q$ around the $Z^0$ pole, and even with the lepton pair's invariant mass integrated from Q=70 GeV to 110 GeV, the $A_N$ is still close to 10 percent for the central and near forward rapidity region. We argue that the SSAs of Drell-Yan inclusive dilepton production at low $Q$ and that near the $Z^0$ pole provide complementary information for testing the time-reversal modified universality (the sign change) of the Sivers functions.

Collinear factorization for deep inelastic scattering structure functions at large Bjorken xB

We examine the uncertainty of perturbative QCD factorization for hadron structure functions in deep inelastic scattering at a large value of the Bjorken variable xB. We analyze the target mass correction to the structure functions by using the collinear factorization approach in the momentum space. We express the long distance physics of structure functions and the leading target mass corrections in terms of parton distribution functions with the standard operator definition. We compare our result with existing work on the target mass correction. We also discuss the impact of a final-state jet function on the extraction of parton distributions at large fractional momentum x.

Fragmentation, Factorization and Infrared Poles in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We explore the role of soft gluon exchange in heavy quarkonium production at large transverse momentum. We find uncanceled infrared poles at NNLO that are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. We show, however, that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production operators be modified to include nonabelian phases or Wilson lines. With appropriately modified operators, factorization is restored at NNLO. We also argue that, in the absence of special cancellations, infrared poles at yet higher orders may require the inclusion of additional nonlocal operators, not present in the NRQCD expansion in relative veloctiy.

Fragmentation, NRQCD and Factorization in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We discuss factorization in heavy quarkonium production in high energy collisions using NRQCD. Infrared divergences at NNLO are not matched by conventional NRQCD matrix elements. However, we show that gauge invariance and factorization require that conventional NRQCD production matrix elements be modified to include Wilson lines or non-abelian gauge links. With this modification NRQCD factorization for heavy quarkonium production is restored at NNLO.

Fragmentation, NRQCD and NNLO Factorization Analysis in Heavy Quarkonium Production

We discuss heavy quarkonium production through parton fragmentation, including a review of arguments for the factorization of high-p_T particles into fragmentation functions for hadronic initial states. We investigate the further factorization of fragmentation functions in the NRQCD formalism, and argue that this requires a modification of NRQCD octet production matrix elements to include nonabelian phases, which makes them gauge invariant. We describe the calculation of uncanceled infrared divergences in fragmentation functions that must be factorized at NNLO, and verify that they are absorbed into the new, gauge invariant matrix elements.
