Total Gluon Helicity Contribution to the Proton Spin from Lattice QCD

We report a state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculation of the total gluon helicity contribution to the proton spin, $ΔG$. The calculation is done on ensembles with three different lattice spacings $a=\{0.08, 0.09, 0.11\}$ fm. By employing distillation and momentum smearing for proton external states, we extract the bare matrix elements of the topological current $K^μ$ using 5-HYP smeared Coulomb gauge fixing configurations. Furthermore, we apply a non-perturbative $\mathrm{RI/MOM}$ renormalization scheme augmented by the Cluster Decomposition Error Reduction (CDER) technique to determine the renormalization constants of $K^μ$. The results obtained from different components $K^{t,i}$ (with $i$ being the direction of proton momentum or polarization) are consistent with Lorentz covariance within uncertainties. After extrapolating to the continuum limit, $ΔG$ is found to be $ΔG = 0.231(17)^{\mathrm{sta.}}(44)^{\mathrm{sym.}}$ at the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scale $μ^2=10\ \mathrm{GeV}^2$, which constitutes approximately $46(9)\%$ of the proton spin.

Distribution Amplitudes of $K^*$ and $ϕ$ at Physical Pion Mass from Lattice QCD

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the distribution amplitudes of longitudinally and transversely polarized vector mesons $K^*$ and $ϕ$ using large momentum effective theory. We use the clover fermion action on three ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) action, generated by MILC collaboration, at physical pion mass and \{0.06, 0.09, 0.12\} fm lattice spacings, and choose three different hadron momenta $P_z=\{1.29, 1.72, 2.15\}$ GeV. The resulting lattice matrix elements are nonperturbatively renormalized in a hybrid scheme proposed recently. An extrapolation to the continuum and infinite momentum limit is carried out. We find that while the longitudinal distribution amplitudes tend to be close to the asymptotic form, the transverse ones deviate rather significantly from the asymptotic form. Our final results provide crucial {\it ab initio} theory inputs for analyzing pertinent exclusive processes.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Parton Physics

In this document, we summarize the status and challenges of calculating parton physics in lattice QCD for the US Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. "Snowmass"). While PDF-moments calculations have been very successful and been continuously improved, new methods have been developed to calculate distributions directly in $x$-space. Many recent lattice studies have been focused on calculating isovector PDFs of the pion and nucleon, learning to control systematics associated with excited-state contamination, renormalization and continuum extrapolations, pion-mass and finite-volume effects, etc. Although in some cases, the lattice results are already competitive with experimental data, to reach the level of precision in a wide range of $x$ for unpolarized nucleon PDFs impactful for future collider physics remains a challenge, and may require exascale supercomputing power. The new theoretical methods open the door for calculating other partonic observables which will be the focus of the experimental program in nuclear physics, including generalized parton distributions and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. A fruitful interplay between experimental data and lattice-QCD calculations will usher in a new era for parton physics and hadron structure.

Nonperturbative Determination of Collins-Soper Kernel from Quasi Transverse-Momentum Dependent Wave Functions

In the framework of large-momentum effective theory at one-loop matching accuracy, we perform a lattice calculation of the Collins-Soper kernel which governs the rapidity evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions. We first obtain the quasi TMD wave functions at three different meson momenta on a lattice with valence clover quarks on a dynamical HISQ sea and lattice spacing $a=0.12$~fm from MILC, and renormalize the pertinent linear divergences using Wilson loops. Through one-loop matching to the light-cone wave functions, we determine the Collins-Soper kernel with transverse separation up to 0.6~fm. We study the systematic uncertainties from operator mixing and scale dependence, as well as the impact from higher power corrections. Our results potentially allow for a determination of the soft function and other transverse-momentum dependent quantities at one-loop accuracy.

Renormalization of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution on the lattice

To calculate the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) from lattice QCD, an important goal yet to be realized, it is crucial to establish a viable non-perturbative renormalization approach for linear divergences in the corresponding Euclidean quasi-TMDPDF correlators in large-momentum effective theory. We perform a first systematic study of the renormalization property of the quasi-TMDPDFs by calculating the relevant matrix elements in a pion state at 5 lattice spacings ranging from 0.03 fm to 0.12 fm. We demonstrate that the square root of the Wilson loop combined with the short distance hadron matrix element provides a successful method to remove all ultraviolet divergences of the quasi-TMD operator, and thus provide the necessary justification to perform a continuum limit calculation of TMDPDFs. In contrast, the popular RI/MOM renormalization scheme fails to eliminate all linear divergences.

A Hybrid Renormalization Scheme for Quasi Light-Front Correlations in Large-Momentum Effective Theory

In large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), calculating parton physics starts from calculating coordinate-space-$z$ correlation functions $\tilde h(z, a,P^z)$ in a hadron of momentum $P^z$ in lattice QCD. Such correlation functions involve both linear and logarithmic divergences in lattice spacing $a$, and thus need to be properly renormalized. We introduce a hybrid renormalization procedure to match these lattice correlations to those in the continuum $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, without introducing extra non-perturbative effects at large $z$. We analyze the effect of ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ ambiguity in the Wilson line self-energy subtraction involved in this hybrid scheme. To obtain the momentum-space distributions, we recommend to extrapolate the lattice data to the asymptotic $z$-region using the generic properties of the coordinate space correlations at moderate and large $P^z$, respectively.

Pion generalized parton distribution from lattice QCD

We present the first lattice calculation of the valence-quark generalized parton distribution (GPD) of the pion using the large-momentum effective theory (LaMET) approach. We focus on the zero-skewness limit, where the GPD has a probability-density interpretation in the longitudinal Bjorken $x$ and the transverse impact-parameter distributions. Our calculation is done using clover valence fermions on an ensemble of gauge configurations with $2+1+1$ flavors (degenerate up/down, strange and charm) of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) with lattice spacing $a \approx 0.12$ fm, box size $L \approx 3$ fm and pion mass $m_π\approx 310$ MeV. The parton distribution function and the form factor are reproduced as special limits of the GPD as expected. Due to the large errors, this exploratory study does not show a clear preference among different model assumptions about the kinematic dependence of the GPD. To discriminate between these assumptions, future studies using higher-statistics data will be crucial.

Unpolarized isovector quark distribution function from Lattice QCD: A systematic analysis of renormalization and matching

We present a detailed Lattice QCD study of the unpolarized isovector quark Parton Distribution Function (PDF) using large-momentum effective theory framework. We choose a quasi-PDF defined by a spatial correlator which is free from mixing with other operators of the same dimension. In the lattice simulation, we use a Gaussian-momentum-smeared source at $M_π=356$ MeV and $P_z \in \{1.8,2.3\}$ GeV. To control the systematics associated with the excited states, we explore {five different source-sink separations}. The nonperturbative renormalization is conducted in a regularization-independent momentum subtraction scheme, and the matching between the renormalized quasi-PDF and $\bar{\rm MS}$ PDF is calculated based on perturbative QCD up to one-loop order. Systematic errors due to renormalization and perturbative matching are also analyzed in detail. Our results for lightcone PDF are in reasonable agreement with the latest phenomenological analysis.

Breather transition dynamics, Peregrine combs/walls and modulation instability in a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher-order effects

We study a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger (vc-NLS) equation with higher-order effects. We show that the breather solution can be converted into four types of nonlinear waves on constant backgrounds including the multi-peak solitons, antidark soliton, periodic wave and W-shaped soliton. The transition condition requiring the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and third-order dispersion (TOD) to scale linearly is obtained analytically. We display several kinds of elastic interactions between the transformed nonlinear waves. We discuss the dispersion management of multi-peak soliton, which indicates that the GVD coefficient controls the number of peaks of the wave while the TOD coefficient has compression effect. The gain or loss has influence on the amplitudes of the multi-peak soliton. We further derive the breather multiple births by using multiple compression points of Akhmediev breathers in optical fiber systems with periodic dispersion. The number of ABs depends on the amplitude of the modulation but not on its wavelength, which affects their separation distance. In the limiting case, the breather multiple births reduce to the Peregrine combs. We discuss the effects of TOD coefficient on the spatiotemporal characteristics of Peregrine combs. When the amplitude of the modulation is equal to 1, the Peregrine comb is converted into a Peregrine wall that can be seen as intermediate state between rogue wave and W-shaped soliton. We finally find that the modulational stability regions with zero growth rate coincide with the transition condition using rogue wave eigenvalues. Our results could be useful for the experimental control and manipulation of the formation of generalized Peregrine rogue waves in diverse physical systems modeled by vc-NLS equation with higher-order effects.

Improved quasi parton distribution through Wilson line renormalization

Recent developments showed that hadron light-cone parton distributions could be directly extracted from spacelike correlators, known as quasi parton distributions, in the large hadron momentum limit. Unlike the normal light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution contains ultraviolet (UV) power divergence associated with the Wilson line self energy. We show that to all orders in the coupling expansion, the power divergence can be removed by a "mass" counterterm in the auxiliary $z$-field formalism, in the same way as the renormalization of power divergence for an open Wilson line. After adding this counterterm, the quasi quark distribution is improved such that it contains at most logarithmic divergences. Based on a simple version of discretized gauge action, we present the one-loop matching kernel between the improved non-singlet quasi quark distribution with a lattice regulator and the corresponding quark distribution in dimensional regularization.

Nucleon Helicity and Transversity Parton Distributions from Lattice QCD

We present the first lattice-QCD calculation of the isovector polarized parton distribution functions (both helicity and transversity) using the large-momentum effective field theory (LaMET) approach for direct Bjorken-$x$ dependence. We first review the detailed steps of the procedure in the unpolarized case, then generalize to the helicity and transversity cases. We also derive a new mass-correction formulation for all three cases. We then compare the effects of each finite-momentum correction using lattice data calculated at $M_π\approx 310$ MeV. Finally, we discuss the implications of these results for the poorly known antiquark structure and predict the sea-flavor asymmetry in the transversely polarized nucleon.

Stationary nonlinear waves, superposition modes and modulational instability characteristics in the AB system

We study the AB system describing marginally unstable baroclinic wave packets in geophysical fluids and also ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optics. We show that the breather can be converted into different types of stationary nonlinear waves on constant backgrounds, including the multi-peak soliton, M-shaped soliton, W-shaped soliton and periodic wave. We also investigate the nonlinear interactions between these waves, which display some novel patterns due to the non-propagating characteristics of the solitons: (1) Two antidark solitons can produce a W-shaped soliton instead of a higher-order antidark one, (2) The interaction between an antidark soliton and a W-shaped soliton can not only generate a higher-order antidark soliton, but also form a W-shaped solion pair, (3) The interactions between an oscillation W-shaped soliton and an oscillation M-shaped soliton show the multipeak structures. We find that the transition occurs at a modulational stability region in a low perturbation frequency region.

Justifying the Naive Partonic Sum Rule for Proton Spin

We provide a theoretical basis for understanding the spin structure of the proton in terms of the spin and orbital angular momenta of free quarks and gluons in Feynman's parton picture. We show that each term in the Jaffe-Manohar spin sum rule can be related to the matrix element of a gauge-invariant, but frame-dependent operator through a matching formula in large-momentum effective field theory. We present all the matching conditions for the spin content at one-loop order in perturbation theory, which provide a basis to calculate parton orbital angular momentum in lattice QCD at leading logarithmic accuracy.

On the renormalization of quasi parton distribution

Recent developments showed that light-cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the hadronic matrix elements of spacelike correlators, which are known as quasi parton distributions. Like a light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution also contains ultraviolet divergences and therefore needs renormalization. The renormalization of non-local operators in general is not well understood. However, in the case of quasi quark distribution, the bilinear quark operator with a straight-line gauge link appears to be multiplicatively renormalizable by the quark wave function renormalization in the axial gauge. We first show that the renormalization of the self energy correction to the quasi quark distribution is equivalent to that of the heavy-light quark vector current in heavy quark effective theory at one-loop order. Assuming this equivalence at two-loop order, we then show that the multiplicative renormalizability of the quasi quark distribution is true at two-loop order.

One-Loop Matching for Generalized Parton Distributions

We present the one-loop matching condition for the unpolarized and polarized generalized quark distributions in the non-singlet case. The matching condition links the quasi distributions defined in terms of spacelike correlators at finite nucleon momentum to the light-cone distributions, and is useful for extracting the latter from the former in a lattice QCD calculation. Our results show that at one-loop and leading power accuracy the matching for the light-cone generalized quark distribution $H$ ($\tilde H$) is non-trivial, whereas no matching is required for $E$ ($\tilde E$). Therefore, $E$ ($\tilde E$) can be smoothly approached by its quasi counterpart in the large momentum limit. We also present the matching for the distribution amplitude of the pion.

One-loop matching for transversity generalized parton distribution

Recent developments showed that light cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the so-called quasiparton distributions, which are defined in terms of spacelike correlators, and therefore can be readily computed on the lattice. These two distributions can be connected to each other by a perturbative factorization formula or matching condition that allows one to convert the latter into the former. Here we present the one-loop matching condition for the transversity generalized quark distribution in the nonsinglet case

Spin Decomposition of Electron in QED

We perform a systematic study on the spin decomposition of an electron in QED at one-loop order. It is found that the electron orbital angular momentum defined in Jaffe-Manohar and Ji spin sum rules agrees with each other, and the so-called potential angular momentum vanishes at this order. The calculations are performed in both dimensional regularization and Pauli-Villars regularization for the ultraviolet divergences, and they lead to consistent results. We further investigate the calculations in terms of light-front wave functions, and find a missing contribution from the instantaneous interaction in light-front quantization. This clarifies the confusing issues raised recently in the literature on the spin decomposition of an electron, and will help to consolidate the spin physics program for nucleons in QCD.

Gravity/Fluid Correspondence and Its Application on Bulk Gravity with $U(1)$ Gauge Field

As the long wavelength limit of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the gravity/fluid correspondence has been shown to be a useful tool for extracting properties of the fluid on the boundary dual to the gravity in the bulk. In this paper, after briefly reviewing the algorithm of gravity/fluid correspondence, we discuss the results of its application on bulk gravity with a $U(1)$ gauge field. In the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge field, the dual fluid possesses more interesting properties such as its charge current. Furthermore, an external field $A_μ^{ext}$ could affect the charge current, and the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons term also reinduces extra structures to the dual current giving anomalous transport coefficients.

One-Loop Matching for Parton Distributions: Non-Singlet Case

We derive one-loop matching condition for non-singlet quark distributions in transverse-momentum cut-off scheme, including unpolarized, helicity and transversity distributions. The matching is between the quasi-distribution defined by static correlation at finite nucleon momentum and the light-cone distribution measurable in experiments. The result is useful for extracting the latter from the former in a lattice QCD calculation.

Physics of Gluon Helicity Contribution to Proton Spin

The total gluon helicity in a polarized proton, measurable in high-energy scattering, is shown to be the large momentum limit of a gauge-invariant but non-local, frame-dependent gluon spin $\vec{E}\times \vec{A}_\perp$ in QCD. This opens a door for a non-perturbative calculation of this quantity in lattice QCD, and also justifies using free-field expressions in the light-cone gauge as physical observables.

Vacuum Stability and Higgs Diphoton Decay Rate in the Zee-Babu Model

Although recent Higgs data from ATLAS and CMS are compatible with a Standard Model (SM) signal at $2σ$ level, both experiments see indications for an excess in the diphoton decay channel, which points to new physics beyond the SM. Given such a low Higgs mass $m_H \sim 125 {\rm GeV}$, another sign indicating the existence of new physics beyond the SM is the vacuum stability problem, i.e., the SM Higgs quartic coupling may run to negative values at a scale below the Planck scale. In this paper, we study the vacuum stability and enhanced Higgs diphoton decay rate in the Zee-Babu model, which was used to generate tiny Majorana neutrino masses at two-loop level. We find that it is rather difficult to find overlapping regions allowed by the vacuum stability and diphoton enhancement constraints. As a consequence, it is almost inevitable to introduce new ingredients into the model, in order to resolve these two issues simultaneously.

Hydrodynamics of a 5D Einstein-dilaton black hole solution and the corresponding BPS state

We apply the potential reconstruction approach to generate a series of asymptotically AdS (aAdS) black hole solutions, with a self-interacting bulk scalar field. Based on the method, we reproduce the pure AdS solution as a consistency check and we also generate a simple analytic 5D black hole solution. We then study various aspects of this solution, such as temperature, entropy density and conserved charges. Furthermore, we study the hydrodynamics of this black hole solution in the framework of fluid/gravity duality, e.g. the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density. In a degenerate case of the 5D black hole solution, we find that the c function decreases monotonically from UV to IR as expected. Finally, we investigate the stability of the degenerate solution by studying the bosonic functional energy of the gravity and the Witten-Nester energy $E_{WN}$. We confirm that the degenerate solution is a BPS domain wall solution. The corresponding superpotential and the solution of the killing spinor equation are found explicitly.

Hydrodynamics with conserved current via AdS/CFT correspondence in the Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the hydrodynamics with conserved current from the dual Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. After constructing the perturbative solution to the first order based on the boosted black brane solution in the bulk Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we extract the stress tensor and conserved current of the dual conformal fluid on its boundary, and also find the effect of Gauss-Bonnet term on the dual conformal fluid. Our results show that the Gauss-Bonnet term can affect the parameters such as the shear viscosity $η$, entropy density $s$, thermal conductivity $κ$ and electrical conductivity $σ$. However, it does not affect the so-called Wiedemann-Franz law which relates $κ$ to $σ$, while it affects the ratio $η/s$. In addition, another interesting result is that the $η/s$ can also be affected by the bulk Maxwell field in our case, which is consistent with some previous results predicted through the Kubo formula. Moreover, the anomalous magnetic and vortical effects by adding the Chern-Simons term are also considered in our case in the Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Multidimensional Residues for Feynman Integrals with Generic Power of Propagators

We propose that the concept of multidimensional residues can be used to directly extracting the coefficients of scalar master integrals (with single propagators only) from one-loop Feynman integrals with generic power of propagators. Unlike the usual integration-by-parts (IBP) technique, where one has to solve iteratively a complicated set of equations to carry out the reduction and determine the coefficients of scalar master integrals, using multidimensional residues provides the possibility of directly extracting the coefficients of the master integrals. As the first application of this idea, we show how to directly extract the scalar box integral coefficients.

Radiative Corrections to $H^0\to WW/ZZ$ in the MSSM

The electroweak $\mathcal O(α)$ radiative corrections to the decay of the heavy CP-even MSSM Higgs boson to weak gauge bosons are presented. Due to the suppression of the tree-level $H^0WW/H^0ZZ$ coupling, the electroweak contributions to the partial decay width are significant. Although the effective Born decay width can be rather small for certain $M_{A^0}$ values (especially for large $\tanβ$), the corrected partial widths at different values of $M_{A^0}$ are of comparable size.

On the two-loop hexagon Wilson loop remainder function in N=4 SYM

A duality relation has been proposed between the planar gluon MHV amplitudes and light-like Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills. At six-point two-loop, the results for the planar gluon MHV amplitude and for the light-like Wilson loop agree, but they both differ from the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov ansatz by a finite remainder function. Recently Del Duca, Duhr and Smirnov presented an analytical result for the two-loop hexagon Wilson loop remainder function in general kinematics. Their result is rather lengthy, and the dependence on the conformal cross ratios appears in a complicated way. Here we present an alternate, more compact representation for the two-loop hexagon Wilson loop remainder function.

On the Yang-Mills two-loop effective action with wordline methods

We derive the two-loop effective action for covariantly constant field strength of pure Yang-Mills theory in the presence of an infrared scale. The computation is done in the framework of the worldline formalism, based on a generalization procedure of constructing multiloop effective actions in terms of the bosonic worldline path integral. The two-loop beta-function is correctly reproduced. This is the first derivation in the worldline formulation, and serves as a nontrivial check on the consistency of the multiloop generalization procedure in the worldline formalism.
