Slip viscosity and strain-rate viscosity in Taylor-Couette laminar flows: Experimental falsification and end-wall effects

The viscous force should be shear force, the difference between the strain-rate viscosity and the slip viscosity is that the former has conjugate shear force, while the latter does not. The study in this paper verifies the physical authenticity of two viscosity models through Taylor Couette laminar flow experiments with inner and outer cylinders rotating at the same angular velocity, and numerically investigate the influence of relative cylinder spacing and rotational speed on the circumferential velocity under the slip model. The experimental results of LDV measurement with a relative cylinder spacing of 0.3 indicate that the maximum deviation from rigid-body rotation is about 0.86%, which is consistent with the theoretical prediction of slip viscosity model. The numerical simulations show that the end-walls have no effect under the strain-rate viscosity model; but when the slip viscosity model is introduced, the end-walls inevitably bring about the circumferential velocity profile changing along the axial direction, and result in a three-dimensional (3D) spiral streamline pattern influenced by the relative cylinder spacing and angular speed of cylinders.

Hereditary $n$-exangulated categories

Herschend-Liu-Nakaoka introduced the concept of $n$-exangulated categories as higher-dimensional analogues of extriangulated categories defined by Nakaoka-Palu. The class of $n$-exangulated categories contains $n$-exact categories and $(n+2)$-angulated categories as specific examples. In this article, we introduce the notion of hereditary $n$-exangulated categories, which generalize hereditary extriangulated categories. We provide two classes of hereditary $n$-exangulated categories through closed subfunctors. Additionally, we define the concept of $0$-Auslander $n$-exangulated categories and discuss the circumstances under which these two classes of hereditary $n$-exangulated categories become $0$-Auslander.

A dimension reduction approach for loss valuation in credit risk modelling

This paper addresses the ``curse of dimensionality'' in the loss valuation of credit risk models. A dimension reduction methodology based on the Bayesian filter and smoother is proposed. This methodology is designed to achieve a fast and accurate loss valuation algorithm in credit risk modelling, but it can also be extended to valuation models of other risk types. The proposed methodology is generic, robust and can easily be implemented. Moreover, the accuracy of the proposed methodology in the estimation of expected loss and value-at-risk is illustrated by numerical experiments. The results suggest that, compared to the currently most used PCA approach, the proposed methodology provides more accurate estimation of expected loss and value-at-risk of a loss distribution.

Idempotent completion of certain $n$-exangulated categories

It was shown recently that an $n$-extension closed subcategory $\mathscr A$ of a Krull-Schmidt $(n+2)$-angulated category has a natural structure of an $n$-exangulated category. In this article, we prove that its idempotent completion $\widetilde{\mathscr A}$ admits an $n$-exangulated structure. It is not only a generalization of the main result of Lin, but also gives an $n$-exangulated category which is neither $n$-exact nor $(n+2)$-angulated in general.

Localization of n-exangulated categories

Nakaoka-Ogawa-Sakai considered the localization of an extriangulated category. This construction unified the Serre quotient of abelian categories and the Verdier quotient of triangulated categories. Recently, Herschend-Liu-Nakaoka defined $n$-exangulated categories as a higher dimensional analogue of extriangulated categories. Let $\mathcal C$ be an $n$-exangulated category and $\mathcal{F}$ be a multiplicative system satisfying mild assumption. In this article, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the localization of $\mathcal C$ be an $n$-exangulated category. This way gives a new class of $n$-exangulated categories which are neither $n$-exact nor $(n+2)$-angulated in general. Moreover, our result also generalizes work by Nakaoka-Ogawa-Sakai.

Decreased aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage incidence rate in elderly population than in middle aged population: a retrospective analysis of 8,144 cases in Mainland China

Purpose: Rupture of an intracranial aneurysm is the most common cause of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), which is a life-threatening acute cerebrovascular event that typically affects working-age people. This study aims to investigate the aneurysmal SAH incidence rate in elderly population than in middle aged population in China. Materials and methods: Aneurysmal SAH cases were collected retrospectively from the archives of 21 hospitals in Mainland China. All the cases collected were from September 2016 and backward consecutively for a period of time up to 8 years. SAH was initially diagnosed by brain computed tomography, and CT angiography (CTA) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was followed and SAH was confirmed to be due to cerebral aneurysm. When for cases multiple bleeding occurred, the age of the first SAH was used in this study. The toltal incidence from all hospital at each age were summed together for females and males; then adjusted by the total population number at each age for females and males. The total population data was from the 2010 population census of the People's Republic of China. Results: In total there were 8,144 cases, with 4,861 females and 3,283 males. Our analysis shows for both females and males the relative aneurysmal SAH rate started to decrease after around 65 years old. The males the relative aneurysmal SAH rate might have started to decrease after around 55 years old. Conclusion: In contrast to previous reports, our data demonstrated a decreased aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage incidence rate in elderly population than in middle aged population. Our data therefore support the hypothesis that aneurysms do not grow progressively once they form but probably either rupture or stabilize and that very elderly patients are at a reduced risk of rupture compared with atients who are younger with the same-sized aneurysms.

The thermal and electrical properties of the promising semiconductor MXene Hf2CO2

In this work, we investigate the thermal and electrical properties of oxygen-functionalized M2CO2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) MXenes using first-principles calculations. Hf2CO2 is found to exhibit a thermal conductivity better than MoS2 and phosphorene. The room temperature thermal conductivity along the armchair direction is determined to be 86.25-131.2 Wm-1K-1 with a flake length of 5-100 um, and the corresponding value in the zigzag direction is approximately 42% of that in the armchair direction. Other important thermal properties of M2CO2 are also considered, including their specific heat and thermal expansion coefficients. The theoretical room temperature thermal expansion coefficient of Hf2CO2 is 6.094x10-6 K-1, which is lower than that of most metals. Moreover, Hf2CO2 is determined to be a semiconductor with a band gap of 1.657 eV and to have high and anisotropic carrier mobility. At room temperature, the Hf2CO2 hole mobility in the armchair direction (in the zigzag direction) is determined to be as high as 13.5x103 cm2V-1s-1 (17.6x103 cm2V-1s-1), which is comparable to that of phosphorene. Broader utilization of Hf2CO2 as a material for nanoelectronics is likely because of its moderate band gap, satisfactory thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient, and excellent carrier mobility. The corresponding thermal and electrical properties of Ti2CO2 and Zr2CO2 are also provided here for comparison. Notably, Ti2CO2 presents relatively low thermal conductivity and much higher carrier mobility than Hf2CO2, which is an indication that Ti2CO2 may be used as an efficient thermoelectric material.

Significant ZT Enhancement in p-type Ti(Co,Fe)Sb-InSb Nanocomposites via a Synergistic High Mobility Electron Injection Energy filtering and Boundary Scattering Approach

It has been demonstrated that InSb nanoinclusions, which are formed in situ, can simultaneously improve all three individual thermoelectric properties of the n-type half Heusler compound (Ti,Zr,Hf)(Co,Ni)Sb [Xie et al., Acta Mater. 58, 4795 (2010)]. In the work presented herein, we have adopted the same approach to the p-type half Heusler compound Ti(Co,Fe)Sb. The results of resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and Hall coefficient measurements indicate that the combined high mobility electron injection, low energy electron filtering, and boundary scattering, again, lead to a simultaneous improvement of all three individual thermoelectric properties: enhanced Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity as well as reduced lattice thermal conductivity. A figure of merit of ZT=0.33 was attained at 900 K for the sample containing 1 atomic percent InSb nanoinclusions, a 450 percent improvement over the nanoinclusion-free sample. This represents a rare case that the same nanostructuring approach successfully works for both p-type and n-type thermoelectric materials of the same class, hence pointing to a promising materials design route for higher performance half-Heusler materials in the future and hopefully will realize similar improvement in TE devices based on such half Heusler alloys.

Correlators and Descendants of Subcritical Stein Manifolds

We determine contact homology algebra of a subcritical Stein-fillable contact manifold whose first Chern class vanishes. We also compute the genus-0 one point correlators and gravitational descendants of compactly supported closed forms of their subcritical Stein fillings. This is a step towards determining the full potential function of the filling as defined in \cite{EliashbergGiventalHofer}. These invariants also give a canonical presentation of the cylindrical contact homology. With respect to this presentation, we determine the degree-2 differential in the Bourgeois--Oancea exact sequence of \cite{Oancea}. As a further application, we proved that if a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ admits a subcritical polarization and $c_1$ vanishes in the subcritical complement, then $M$ is uniruled.

This is a step towards determining the full potential function of the filling. As an application, we proved that if a Kähler manifold $M^{2n}$ admits a subcritical polarization and $c_1$ vanishes in the subcritical complement, then $M$ is uniruled.

Gravitational Descendants and Linearized Contact Homology

In this paper we prove a recursion relation between the the one-point genus-0 gravitational descendants of a Stein domain $(M,\partial M)$. This relation is best described by the degree -2 map $D$ in the linearized contact homology of $\partial M$, arising from the Bourgeois--Oancea exact sequence between symplectic homology of $M$ and linearized contact homology of $\partial M$. All one-point genus-0 gravitational descendants can be reduce to the one-point Gromov--Witten invariants via iterates of $D$.
