A Formal Category Theoretical Framework for Multi-model Data Transformations

Data integration and migration processes in polystores and multi-model database management systems highly benefit from data and schema transformations. Rigorous modeling of transformations is a complex problem. The data and schema transformation field is scattered with multiple different transformation frameworks, tools, and mappings. These are usually domain-specific and lack solid theoretical foundations. Our first goal is to define category theoretical foundations for relational, graph, and hierarchical data models and instances. Each data instance is represented as a category theoretical mapping called a functor. We formalize data and schema transformations as Kan lifts utilizing the functorial representation for the instances. A Kan lift is a category theoretical construction consisting of two mappings satisfying a certain universal property. In this work, the two mappings correspond to schema transformation and data transformation.

Cross-Model Conjunctive Queries over Relation and Tree-structured Data (Extended)

Conjunctive queries are the most basic and central class of database queries. With the continued growth of demands to manage and process the massive volume of different types of data, there is little research to study the conjunctive queries between relation and tree data. In this paper, we study of Cross-Model Conjunctive Queries (CMCQs) over relation and tree-structured data (XML and JSON). To efficiently process CMCQs with bounded intermediate results, we first encode tree nodes with position information. With tree node original label values and encoded position values, it allows our proposed algorithm CMJoin to join relations and tree data simultaneously, avoiding massive intermediate results. CMJoin achieves worst-case optimality in terms of the total result of label values and encoded position values. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of the proposed techniques to answer a CMCQ in terms of running time and intermediate result size.

Top-k String Auto-Completion with Synonyms

Auto-completion is one of the most prominent features of modern information systems. The existing solutions of auto-completion provide the suggestions based on the beginning of the currently input character sequence (i.e. prefix). However, in many real applications, one entity often has synonyms or abbreviations. For example, "DBMS" is an abbreviation of "Database Management Systems". In this paper, we study a novel type of auto-completion by using synonyms and abbreviations. We propose three trie-based algorithms to solve the top-k auto-completion with synonyms; each one with different space and time complexity trade-offs. Experiments on large-scale datasets show that it is possible to support effective and efficient synonym-based retrieval of completions of a million strings with thousands of synonyms rules at about a microsecond per-completion, while taking small space overhead (i.e. 160-200 bytes per string). UDBMS: Road to Unification for Multi-model Data Management

A traditional database systems is organized around a single data model that determines how data can be organized, stored and manipulated. But the vision of this paper is to develop new principles and techniques to manage multiple data models against a single, integrated backend. For example, semi-structured, graph and relational models are examples of data models that may be supported by a new system. Having a single data platform for managing both well-structured data and NoSQL data is beneficial to users; this approach significantly reduces integration, migration, development, maintenance and operational issues. The problem is challenging: the existing database principles mainly work for a single model and the research on multi-model data management is still at an early stage. In this paper, we envision a UDBMS (Unified Database Management System) for multi-model data management in one platform. UDBMS will provide several new features such as unified data model and flexible schema, unified query processing, unified index structure and cross-model transaction guarantees. We discuss our vision as well as present multiple research challenges that we need to address.

Breaking Out The XML MisMatch Trap

In keyword search, when user cannot get what she wants, query refinement is needed and reason can be various. We first give a thorough categorization of the reason, then focus on solving one category of query refinement problem in the context of XML keyword search, where what user searches for does not exist in the data. We refer to it as the MisMatch problem in this paper. Then we propose a practical way to detect the MisMatch problem and generate helpful suggestions to users. Our approach can be viewed as a post-processing job of query evaluation, and has three main features: (1) it adopts both the suggested queries and their sample results as the output to user, helping user judge whether the MisMatch problem is solved without consuming all query results; (2) it is portable in the sense that it can work with any LCA-based matching semantics and orthogonal to the choice of result retrieval method adopted; (3) it is lightweight in the way that it occupies a very small proportion of the whole query evaluation time. Extensive experiments on three real datasets verify the effectiveness, efficiency and scalability of our approach. An online XML keyword search engine called XClear that embeds the MisMatch problem detector and suggester has been built.

A MovingObject Index for Efficient Query Processing with Peer-Wise Location Privacy

With the growing use of location-based services, location privacy attracts increasing attention from users, industry, and the research community. While considerable effort has been devoted to inventing techniques that prevent service providers from knowing a user's exact location, relatively little attention has been paid to enabling so-called peer-wise privacy--the protection of a user's location from unauthorized peer users. This paper identifies an important efficiency problem in existing peer-privacy approaches that simply apply a filtering step to identify users that are located in a query range, but that do not want to disclose their location to the querying peer. To solve this problem, we propose a novel, privacy-policy enabled index called the PEB-tree that seamlessly integrates location proximity and policy compatibility. We propose efficient algorithms that use the PEB-tree for processing privacy-aware range and kNN queries. Extensive experiments suggest that the PEB-tree enables efficient query processing.
