Supercongruences involving Motzkin numbers and central trinomial coefficients

Let $M_n$ and $T_n$ denote the $n$th Motzkin number and the $n$th central trinomial coefficient respectively. We prove that for any prime $p\ge 5$, \begin{align*} &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}M_k^2\equiv \left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\left(2-6p\right)\pmod{p^2},\\ &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}kM_k^2\equiv \left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\left(9p-1\right)\pmod{p^2},\\ &\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}T_kM_k\equiv \frac{4}{3}\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)+\frac{p}{6}\left(1-9\left(\frac{p}{3}\right)\right)\pmod{p^2}, \end{align*} where $\left(-\right)$ is the Legendre symbol. These results confirm three 12-year-old supercongruence conjectures of Z.-W. Sun.

A $p$-adic analogue of Chan and Verrill's formula for $1/π$

We prove three supercongruences for sums of Almkvist-Zudilin numbers, which confirm some conjectures of Zudilin and Z.-H. Sun. A typical example is the Ramanujan-type supercongruence: \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1} \frac{4k+1}{81^k}γ_k \equiv \left(\frac{-3}{p}\right) p\pmod{p^3}, \end{align*} which is corresponding to Chan and Verrill's formula for $1/π$: \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{4k+1}{81^k}γ_k = \frac{3\sqrt{3}}{2π}. \end{align*} Here $γ_n$ are the Almkvist-Zudilin numbers.

Supercongruences for sums involving Domb numbers

We prove some supercongruence and divisibility results on sums involving Domb numbers, which confirm four conjectures of Z.-W. Sun and Z.-H. Sun. For instance, by using a transformation formula due to Chan and Zudilin, we show that for any prime $p\ge 5$, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{3k+1}{(-32)^k}{\rm Domb}(k)\equiv (-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}p+p^3E_{p-3} \pmod{p^4}, \end{align*} which is regarded as a $p$-adic analogue of the following interesting formula for $1/π$ due to Rogers: \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{\infty}\frac{3k+1}{(-32)^k}{\rm Domb}(k)=\frac{2}π. \end{align*} Here ${\rm Domb}(n)$ and $E_n$ are the famous Domb numbers and Euler numbers.

Proof of a congruence on sums of powers of $q$-binomial coefficients

We prove that, if $m,n\geqslant 1$ and $a_1,\ldots,a_m$ are nonnegative integers, then \begin{align*} \frac{[a_1+\cdots+a_m+1]!}{[a_1]!\ldots[a_m]!}\sum^{n-1}_{h=0}q^h\prod_{i=1}^m{h\brack a_i} \equiv 0\pmod{[n]}, \end{align*} where $[n]=\frac{1-q^n}{1-q}$, $[n]!=[n][n-1]\cdots[1]$, and ${a\brack b}=\prod_{k=1}^b\frac{1-q^{a-k+1}}{1-q^k}$. The $a_1=\cdots=a_m$ case confirms a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun. We also show that, if $p>\max\{a,b\}$ is a prime, then \begin{align*} \frac{[a+b+1]!}{[a]![b]!}\sum_{h=0}^{p-1}q^h{h\brack a}{h\brack b} \equiv (-1)^{a-b} q^{ab-{a\choose 2}-{b\choose 2}}[p]\pmod{[p]^2}. \end{align*}

Proof of a conjecture of Z.-W. Sun on the divisibility of a triple sum

The numbers $R_n$ and $W_n$ are defined as \begin{align*} R_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}\frac{1}{2k-1},\ \text{and}\ W_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}\frac{3}{2k-3}. \end{align*} We prove that, for any positive integer $n$ and odd prime $p$, there hold \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)R_k^2 &\equiv 0 \pmod{n}, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)R_k^2 &\equiv 4p(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}} -p^2 \pmod{p^3}, \\ 9\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)W_k^2 &\equiv 0 \pmod{n}, \\ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(2k+1)W_k^2 &\equiv 12p(-1)^{\frac{p-1}{2}}-17p^2 \pmod{p^3}, \quad\text{if $p>3$.} \end{align*} The first two congruences were originally conjectured by Z.-W. Sun. Our proof is based on the multi-variable Zeilberger algorithm and the following observation: $$ {2n\choose n}{n\choose k}{m\choose k}{k\choose m-n}\equiv 0\pmod{{2k\choose k}{2m-2k\choose m-k}}, $$ where $0\leqslant k\leqslant n\leqslant m \leqslant 2n$.

Proof of some conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on the divisibility of certain double-sums

Z.-W. Sun introduced three kinds of numbers: \begin{align*}S_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1),\qquad s_n=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}\frac{1}{2k-1}, \end{align*} and $S_n^{+}=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n\choose k}^2{2k\choose k}(2k+1)^2$. In this paper we mainly prove that \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}s_k\equiv \sum_{k=0}^{n-1}S_k^{+}\equiv 0\pmod{n^2}\quad\text{for $n\geqslant 1$}, \end{align*} by establishing some binomial coefficient identities, such as \begin{align*} 4\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}kS_k=n^2\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}\frac{1}{k+1}{2k\choose k}(6k{n-1\choose k}^2+{n-1\choose k}{n-1\choose k+1}). \end{align*} This confirms several recent conjectures of Z.-W. Sun.

Ultrafast absorption of intense x rays by nitrogen molecules

We devise a theoretical description for the response of nitrogen molecules (N2) to ultrashort and intense x rays from the free electron laser (FEL) Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). We set out from a rate-equation description for the x-ray absorption by a nitrogen atom. The equations are formulated using all one-x-ray-photon absorption cross sections and the Auger and radiative decay widths of multiply-ionized nitrogen atoms. Cross sections are obtained with a one-electron theory and decay widths are determined from ab initio computations using the Dirac-Hartree-Slater (DHS) method. We also calculate all binding and transition energies of nitrogen atoms in all charge states with the DHS method as the difference of two self-consistent field calculations (Delta SCF method). To describe the interaction with N2, a detailed investigation of intense x-ray-induced ionization and molecular fragmentation are carried out. As a figure of merit, we calculate ion yields and the average charge state measured in recent experiments at the LCLS. We use a series of phenomenological models of increasing sophistication to unravel the mechanisms of the interaction of x rays with N2: a single atom, a symmetric-sharing model, and a fragmentation-matrix model are developed. The role of the formation and decay of single and double core holes, the metastable states of N_2^2+, and molecular fragmentation are explained.
