Apollonian depth, spinors, and the super-Dedekind tessellation

The configuration space of tricycles (triples of disks in contact) is shown to coincide with the complex plane resulting as a projective space costructed from the tangency and Pauli spinors. Remarkably, the fractal of the depth functions assumes a particularly simple and elegant form. Moreover, the factor space due to a certain symmetry group provides a parametrization of the Apollonian disk packings.

Spinors, lattices, and classification of integral Apollonian disk packings

A parametrization of integral Descartes configurations (and effectively Apollonian disk packings) by pairs of two-dimensional integral vectors is presented. The vectors, called here tangency spinors defined for pairs of tangent disks, are spinors associated to the Clifford algebra for three-dimensional Minkowski space. A version with Pauli spinors is given. The construction provides a novel interpretation to the known Diophantine equation parametrizing integral Apollonian packings.

Traces, symmetric functions, and a raising operator

The polynomial relationship between elementary symmetric functions (Cauchy enumeration formula) is formulated via a ``raising operator" and Fock space construction. A simple graphical proof of this relation is proposed. The new operator extends the Heisenberg algebra so that the number operator becomes a Lie product. This study is motivated by natural appearance of these polynomials in the theory of invariants for Lax equations and in classical and topological field theories.

Cromlech, menhirs and celestial sphere: an unusual representation of the Lorentz group

We present a novel representation of the Lorentz group, the geometric version of which uses "reversions" of a sphere while the algebraic version uses pseudounitary 2x2 matrices over complex numbers and quaternions, and Clifford algebras in general. A remarkably simple formula for relativistic composition of velocities and an accompanying geometric construction follows. The method is derived from the diffeomorphisms of the celestial sphere induced by Lorentz boost.

Krawtchouk matrices from the Feynman path integral and from the split quaternions

An interpretation of Krawtchouk matrices in terms of discrete version of the Feynman path integral is given. Also, an algebraic characterization in terms of the algebra of split quaternions is provided. The resulting properties include an easy inference of the spectral decomposition. It is also an occasion for an expository clarification of the role of Krawtchouk matrices in different areas, including quantum information.

Relativistic observer and Maxwell equations

The Ehresmann connection on a fiber bundle that is not compatible with a (possible) Lie group structure is illustrated by the geometry of a general anholonomic observer in the Minkowski space. The 3D split of Maxwell's equations induces geometric terms that are the (generalized) curvature and torque of the connection. The notion of torque is introduced here as a Lie coalgebra-valued endomorphism field and measures the deviation of a connection from being principal.

Canonical endomorphism field on a Lie algebra

We show that every Lie algebra is equipped with a natural $(1,1)$-variant tensor field, the "canonical endomorphism field", naturally determined by the Lie structure, and satisfying a certain Nijenhuis bracket condition. This observation may be considered as complementary to the Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau theorem on symplectic geometry of coadjoint orbits. We show its relevance for classical mechanics, in particular for Lax equations. We show that the space of Lax vector fields is closed under Lie bracket and we introduce a new bracket for vector fields on a Lie algebra. This bracket defines a new Lie structure on the space of vector fields.

Clifford Algebras and Euclid's Parameterization of Pythagorean Triples

We show that the space of Euclid's parameters for Pythagorean triples is endowed with a natural symplectic structure and that it emerges as a spinor space of the Clifford algebra $\mathbb{R}_{2,1}$, whose minimal version may be conceptualized as a 4-dimensional real algebra of "kwaternions." We observe that this makes Euclid's parameterization the earliest appearance of the concept of spinors. We present an analogue of the "magic correspondence" for the spinor representation of Minkowski space and show how the Hall matrices fit into the scheme. The latter obtain an interesting and perhaps unexpected geometric meaning as certain symmetries of an Apollonian gasket. An extension to more variables is proposed and explicit formulae for generating all Pythagorean quadruples, hexads, and decuples are provided.

Duplex numbers, diffusion systems, and generalized quantum mechanics

We show that the relation between the Schrödinger equation and diffusion processes has an algebraic nature and can be revealed via the structure of "duplex numbers." This helps one to clarify that quantum mechanics cannot be reduced to diffusion theory. Also, a generalized version of quantum mechanics where $\C$ is replaced by a normed algebra with a unit is proposed.

Krawtchouk matrices from classical and quantum random walks

Krawtchouk's polynomials occur classically as orthogonal polynomials with respect to the binomial distribution. They may be also expressed in the form of matrices, that emerge as arrays of the values that the polynomials take. The algebraic properties of these matrices provide a very interesting and accessible example in the approach to probability theory known as quantum probability. First it is noted how the Krawtchouk matrices are connected to the classical symmetric Bernoulli random walk. And we show how to derive Krawtchouk matrices in the quantum probability context via tensor powers of the elementary Hadamard matrix. Then connections with the classical situation are shown by calculating expectation values in the quantum case.
