Colloidal Synthesis of Crystalline Aluminum Nanoparticles for UV Plasmonics

Numerous applications of nanotechnologies rely on the wide availability of high-quality crystalline nanoparticles (NPs). Although the chemical synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (gold and silver) is well mastered, pushing the optical response of metallic nanoparticles towards the ultraviolet requires other materials, such as aluminum. Although a few demonstrations of chemical synthesis of Al nanoparticles have been reported so far, an elaboration path allowing for a wide range of NP size that is compatible with mass production has yet to be demonstrated. In this article, we report on the production of spherical, size-controlled crystalline Al NPs starting from commercial Al foils and without the use of a catalyst. The proposed method combines sonochemistry with solvochemistry and is fully up-scalable. The obtained NPs have a 10-100 nm crystalline Al core surrounded by a thin alumina shell, allowing long-term stability in ethanol. Well-defined plasmonic resonances in the UV and visible ranges are experimentally evidenced on single nanoparticles.

Hybrid plasmonic nano-emitters with controlled single quantum emitter positioning on the local excitation field

Hybrid plasmonic nanoemitters based on the combination of quantum dot emitters (QD) and plasmonic nanoantennas open up new perspectives in the control of light. However, precise positioning of any active medium at the nanoscale constitutes a challenge. Here, we report on the optimal overlap of antenna's near-field and active medium whose spatial distribution is controlled via a plasmon-triggered 2-photon polymerization of a photosensitive formulation containing QDs. Au nanoparticles of various geometries are considered. The response of these hybrid nano-emitters is shown to be highly sensitive to the light polarization. Different light emission states are evidenced by photoluminescence measurements. These states correspond to polarization-sensitive nanoscale overlap between the exciting local field and the active medium distribution. The decrease of the QD concentration within the monomer formulation allows trapping of a single quantum dot in the vicinity of the Au particle. The latter objects show polarization-dependent switching in the single-photon regime.

Synthesis and SERS application of SiO2@Au nanoparticles

In this letter, we report a chemical route for synthesizing SiO2@Au core-shell nanoparticles. The process includes four steps: i) preparation of the silica cores, ii) grafting gold nanoparticles over SiO2 cores, iii) priming of the silica-coated gold nanoparticles with 2 and 10 nm gold colloids and finally iv) formation of complete shell. The optical extinction spectra were experimentally measured and compared to numerical calculations in order to confirm the dimensions deduced from SEM images. Finally, the potential of such core-shell nanoparticles for biosensing was probed by means of Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering measurements and revealed higher sensitivities with much lower gold quantity of such core-shell nanoparticles compared to Au nanoparticles exhibiting similar diameters.
