On symmetry and uniqueness of ground states for linear and nonlinear elliptic PDEs

We study ground state solutions for linear and nonlinear elliptic PDEs in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with (pseudo-)differential operators of arbitrary order. We prove a general symmetry result in the nonlinear case as well as a uniqueness result for ground states in the linear case. In particular, we can deal with problems (e.\,g. higher order PDEs) that cannot be tackled by usual methods such as maximum principles, moving planes, or Polya--Szegö inequalities. Instead, we use arguments based on the Fourier transform and we apply a rigidity result for the Hardy-Littlewood majorant problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$ recently obtained by the last two authors of the present paper.

Derivation of the Half-Wave Maps Equation from Calogero--Moser Spin Systems

We prove that the energy-critical half-wave maps equation \[ \partial_t \mathbf{S} =\mathbf{S} \times |\nabla| \mathbf{S}, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T} \] arises as an effective equation in the continuum limit of completely integrable Calogero-Moser classical spin systems with inverse square $1/r^2$ interactions on the circle. We study both the convergence to global-in-time weak solutions in the energy class as well as short-time strong solutions of higher regularity. The proofs are based on Fourier methods and suitable discrete analogues of fractional Leibniz rules and Kato-Ponce-Vega commutator estimates. In a companion paper, we further extend our arguments to study the real line case and more general spin interactions.

On symmetry of traveling solitary waves for dispersion generalized NLS

We consider dispersion generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) of the form $i \partial_t u = P(D) u - |u|^{2 σ} u$, where $P(D)$ denotes a (pseudo)-differential operator of arbitrary order. As a main result, we prove symmetry results for traveling solitary waves in the case of powers $σ\in \mathbb{N}$. The arguments are based on Steiner type rearrangements in Fourier space. Our results apply to a broad class of NLS-type equations such as fourth-order (biharmonic) NLS, fractional NLS, square-root Klein-Gordon and half-wave equations.

Absence of binding in a mean-field approximation of quantum electrodynamics

We study the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock model which is a mean-field approximation of QED. It allows to consider relativistic electrons interacting with the Dirac sea. We study the system of two electrons in the vacuum: it has been shown in a previous work that an electron alone can bind due to the vacuum polarization, under some technical assumptions. Here we prove the absence of binding for the system of two electrons: the response of the vacuum is not sufficient to counterbalance the repulsion of the electrons.

Charge renormalisation in a mean-field approximation of QED

We study the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) model, a no-photon, mean-field approxi- mation of quantum electrodynamics that allows to study relativistic electrons interacting with the vacuum. It is a variational model in which states are represented by Hilbert- Schmidt operators. We prove a charge renormalisation formula that holds close to the non-relativistic limit: the density of a ground state is shown to be integrable although such a state is known not to be trace-class. We prove that we can take the non-relativistic limit by keeping track of the vacuum polarisation. We get an altered Hartree-Fock model due to the screening effect.

Existence of Ground State of an Electron in the BDF Approximation

The Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) model allows to describe relativistic electrons interacting with the Dirac sea. It can be seen as a mean-field approximation of Quantum Electro-dynamics (QED) where photons are neglected. This paper treats the case of an electron together with the Dirac sea in the absence of any external field. Such a system is described by its one-body density matrix, an infinite rank, self-adjoint operator which is a compact pertubation of the negative spectral projector of the free Dirac operator. The parameters of the model are the coupling constant $α>0$ and the ultraviolet cut-off $Λ>0$: we consider the subspace of squared integrable functions made of the functions whose Fourier transform vanishes outside the ball $B(0,\La)$. We prove the existence of minimizers of the BDF-energy under the charge constraint of one electron and no external field provided that $α,\La^{-1}$ and $α\llo$ are sufficiently small. The interpretation is the following: in this regime the electron creates a polarization in the Dirac vacuum which allows it to bind. We then study the non-relativistic limit of such a system in which the speed of light tends to infinity (or equivalently $α$ tends to zero) with $α\llo$ fixed: after rescaling the electronic solution tends to the Choquard-Pekar ground state.

The positronium and the dipositronium in a Hartree-Fock approximation of quantum electrodynamics

The Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) model is a no-photon approximation of quantum electrodynamics. It allows to study relativistic electrons in interaction with the Dirac sea. A state is fully characterized by its one-body density matrix, an infinite rank nonnegative projector. We prove the existence of the para-positronium, the bound state of an electron and a positron with antiparallel spins, in the BDF model represented by a critical point of the energy functional in the absence of external field. We also prove the existence of the dipositronium, a molecule made of two electrons and two positrons that also appears as a critical point. More generally, for any half integer $j\in \tfrac{1}{2}+\mathbb{Z}_+$, we prove the existence of a critical point of the energy functional made of $2j+1$ electrons and $2j+1$ positrons.

The positronium in a mean-field approximation of quantum electrodynamics

The Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) model is a no-photon, mean-field approxi- mation of quantum electrodynamics. It describes relativistic electrons in the Dirac sea. In this model, a state is fully characterized by its one-body density matrix, an infinite rank nonnegative operator. We prove the existence of the positronium, the bound state of an electron and a positron, represented by a critical point of the energy functional in the absence of external field. This state is interpreted as the ortho-positronium, where the two particles have parallel spins.
