Abbott Dimension, Mathematics Inspired by Flatland

What is the "right way" to define dimension? Mathematicians working in the early and middle 2020th-century formalized three intuitive definitions of dimension that all turned out to be equivalent on separable metric spaces. But were these definitions the "right" ones? What would it mean to have the "right" definition of dimension? In this paper we attempt to inspire thought about these questions by introducing Abbott dimension, a geometrically intuitive definition of dimension based on Edwin Abbott's 18841884 novella \emph{Flatland}. We show that while Abbott dimension has intuitive appeal, it does not always agree with the classical definitions of dimension on separable metric spaces.

Coarse structure of ultrametric spaces with applications

We show how to decompose all separable ultrametric spaces into a "Lego" combinations of scaled versions of full simplices. To do this we introduce metric resolutions of large scale metric spaces, which describe how a space can be broken up into roughly independent pieces. We use these metric resolutions to define the coarse disjoint union of large scale metric spaces, which provides a way of attaching large scale metric spaces to each other in a "coarsely independent way". We use these notions to construct universal spaces in the categories of separable and proper metric spaces of asymptotic dimension 00, respectively. In doing so we generalize a similar result of Dranishnikov and Zarichnyi as well as Nagórko and Bell. However, the new application is a universal space for proper metric spaces of asymptotic dimension 00, something that eluded those authors. We finish with a description of some countable groups that can serve as such universal spaces.

Relating asymptotic dimension to Ponomarev's cofinal dimension via coarse proximities

In this paper we show that the asymptotic dimension of an unbounded proper metric space is bounded above by a coarse analog of Ponomarev's cofinal dimension of topological spaces, which we call the coarse cofinal dimension. We also show that asymptotic dimension is bounded below by the cofinal dimension of the Higson corona by existing results of Miyata, Austin, and Virk. We do this by introducing several constructions in the theory of coarse proximity spaces. In particular we introduce the inverse limit of coarse proximity spaces. We end with some open problems.
