Exact formulas for random growth with half-flat initial data

We obtain exact formulas for moments and generating functions of the height function of the asymmetric simple exclusion process at one spatial point, starting from special initial data in which every positive even site is initially occupied. These complement earlier formulas of E. Lee [J. Stat. Phys. 140 (2010) 635-647] but, unlike those formulas, ours are suitable in principle for asymptotics. We also explain how our formulas are related to divergent series formulas for half-flat KPZ of Le Doussal and Calabrese [J. Stat. Mech. 2012 (2012) P06001], which we also recover using the methods of this paper. These generating functions are given as a series without any apparent Fredholm determinant or Pfaffian structure. In the long time limit, formal asymptotics show that the fluctuations are given by the Airy$_{2\to1}$ marginals.

On Cameron-Martin Theorem and almost sure global existence

In this note, we discuss various aspects of invariant measures for nonlinear Hamiltonian PDEs. In particular, we show almost sure global existence for some Hamiltonian PDEs with initial data of the form: "smooth deterministic function + a rough random perturbation", as a corollary to Cameron-Martin Theorem and known almost sure global existence results with respect to Gaussian measures on spaces of functions.

KPZ equation, its renormalization and invariant measures

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is a stochastic partial differential equation which is ill-posed because the nonlinearity is marginally defined with respect to the roughness of the forcing noise. However, its Cole-Hopf solution, defined as the logarithm of the solution of the linear stochastic heat equation (SHE) with a multiplicative noise, is a mathematically well-defined object. In fact, Hairer [13] has recently proved that the solution of SHE can actually be derived through the Cole-Hopf transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with a suitable renormalization under periodic boundary conditions. This transformation is unfortunately not well adapted to studying the invariant measures of these Markov processes. The present paper introduces a different type of regularization for the KPZ equation on the whole line $\mathbb{R}$ or under periodic boundary conditions, which is appropriate from the viewpoint of studying the invariant measures. The Cole-Hopf transform applied to this equation leads to an SHE with a smeared noise having an extra complicated nonlinear term. Under time average and in the stationary regime, it is shown that this term can be replaced by a simple linear term, so that the limit equation is the linear SHE with an extra linear term with coefficient 1/24. The methods are essentially stochastic analytic: The Wiener-Itô expansion and a similar method for establishing the Boltzmann-Gibbs principle are used. As a result, it is shown that the distribution of a two-sided geometric Brownian motion with a height shift given by Lebesgue measure is invariant under the evolution determined by the SHE on $\mathbb{R}$.

The intermediate disorder regime for directed polymers in dimension $1+1$

We introduce a new disorder regime for directed polymers in dimension $1+1$ that sits between the weak and strong disorder regimes. We call it the intermediate disorder regime. It is accessed by scaling the inverse temperature parameter $β$ to zero as the polymer length $n$ tends to infinity. The natural choice of scaling is $β_n:=βn^{-1/4}$. We show that the polymer measure under this scaling has previously unseen behavior. While the fluctuation exponents of the polymer endpoint and the log partition function are identical to those for simple random walk ($ζ=1/2,χ=0$), the fluctuations themselves are different. These fluctuations are still influenced by the random environment, and there is no self-averaging of the polymer measure. In particular, the random distribution of the polymer endpoint converges in law (under a diffusive scaling of space) to a random absolutely continuous measure on the real line. The randomness of the measure is inherited from a stationary process $A_β$ that has the recently discovered crossover distributions as its one-point marginals, which for large $β$ become the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also prove existence of a limiting law for the four-parameter field of polymer transition probabilities that can be described by the stochastic heat equation. In particular, in this weak noise limit, we obtain the convergence of the point-to-point free energy fluctuations to the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We emphasize that the scaling behaviour obtained is universal and does not depend on the law of the disorder.

Crossover distributions at the edge of the rarefaction fan

We consider the weakly asymmetric limit of simple exclusion process with drift to the left, starting from step Bernoulli initial data with $ρ_-<ρ_+$ so that macroscopically one has a rarefaction fan. We study the fluctuations of the process observed along slopes in the fan, which are given by the Hopf--Cole solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, with appropriate initial data. For slopes strictly inside the fan, the initial data is a Dirac delta function and the one point distribution functions have been computed in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 64 (2011) 466-537] and [Nuclear Phys. B 834 (2010) 523-542]. At the edge of the rarefaction fan, the initial data is one-sided Brownian. We obtain a new family of crossover distributions giving the exact one-point distributions of this process, which converge, as $T\nearrow\infty$ to those of the Airy $\mathcal{A}_{2\to \mathrm{BM}}$ process. As an application, we prove moment and large deviation estimates for the equilibrium Hopf-Cole solution of KPZ. These bounds rely on the apparently new observation that the FKG inequality holds for the stochastic heat equation. Finally, via a Feynman-Kac path integral, the KPZ equation also governs the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, and thus our formula may also be interpreted in those terms.

Last passage percolation and traveling fronts

We consider a system of N particles with a stochastic dynamics introduced by Brunet and Derrida. The particles can be interpreted as last passage times in directed percolation on {1,...,N} of mean-field type. The particles remain grouped and move like a traveling wave, subject to discretization and driven by a random noise. As N increases, we obtain estimates for the speed of the front and its profile, for different laws of the driving noise. The Gumbel distribution plays a central role for the particle jumps, and we show that the scaling limit is a Lévy process in this case. The case of bounded jumps yields a completely different behavior.

Diffusivity of lattice gases

We consider one component lattice gases with a local dynamics and a stationary product Bernoulli measure. We give upper and lower bounds on the diffusivity at an equilibrium point depending on the dimension and the local behavior of the macroscopic flux function. We show that if the model is expected to be diffusive, it is indeed diffusive, and, if it is expected to be superdiffusive, it is indeed superdiffusive.

The Continuum Directed Random Polymer

Motivated by discrete directed polymers in one space and one time dimension, we construct a continuum directed random polymer that is modeled by a continuous path interacting with a space-time white noise. The strength of the interaction is determined by an inverse temperature parameter beta, and for a given beta and realization of the noise the path evolves in a Markovian way. The transition probabilities are determined by solutions to the one-dimensional stochastic heat equation. We show that for all beta > 0 and for almost all realizations of the white noise the path measure has the same Holder continuity and quadratic variation properties as Brownian motion, but that it is actually singular with respect to the standard Wiener measure on C([0,1]).

On invariant Gibbs measures conditioned on mass and momentum

We construct a Gibbs measure for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) on the circle, conditioned on prescribed mass and momentum: d μ_{a,b} = Z^{-1} 1_{\int_T |u|^2 = a} 1_{i \int_T u \bar{u}_x = b} exp (\pm1/p \int_T |u|^p - 1/2 \int_{\T} |u|^2) d P for a \in R^+ and b \in R, where P is the complex-valued Wiener measure on the circle. We also show that μ_{a,b} is invariant under the flow of NLS. We note that i \int_\T u \bar{u}_x is the Levy stochastic area, and in particular that this is invariant under the flow of NLS.

Interpolation of Gibbs measures with White Noise for Hamiltonian PDE

We consider the family of interpolation measures of Gibbs measures and white noise given by $$dQ_{0,\b}^{(p)} = Z_\b^{-1} \ind_{{\int_{\T} u^2\le K\b^{-1/2}\}} e^{-\int_{\T} u^2 +\b \int u^p} dP_{0,\b}$$ where $P_{0, \b}$ is the Wiener measure on the circle, with variance $β^{-1}$, conditioned to have mean zero. It is shown that as $β\to 0$, $Q_0^β$ converges weakly to mean zero Gaussian white noise $Q_0$. As an application, we present a straightforward proof that $Q_0$ is invariant for the Kortweg-de Vries equation (KdV). This weak convergence also shows that the white noise is a weak limit of invariant measures for the modified KdV and the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Probability Distribution of the Free Energy of the Continuum Directed Random Polymer in 1+1 dimensions

We consider the solution of the stochastic heat equation \partial_T \mathcal{Z} = 1/2 \partial_X^2 \mathcal{Z} - \mathcal{Z} \dot{\mathscr{W}} with delta function initial condition \mathcal{Z} (T=0)= δ_0 whose logarithm, with appropriate normalizations, is the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, or the solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with narrow wedge initial conditions. We obtain explicit formulas for the one-dimensional marginal distributions -- the {\it crossover distributions} -- which interpolate between a standard Gaussian distribution (small time) and the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution (large time). The proof is via a rigorous steepest descent analysis of the Tracy-Widom formula for the asymmetric simple exclusion with anti-shock initial data, which is shown to converge to the continuum equations in an appropriate weakly asymmetric limit. The limit also describes the crossover behaviour between the symmetric and asymmetric exclusion processes.

The Intermediate Disorder Regime for Directed Polymers in Dimension 1+1

We introduce a new disorder regime for directed polymers with one space and one time dimension that is accessed by scaling the inverse temperature parameter βwith the length of the polymer n. We scale β_n := βn^{-α} for alpha non-negative. This scaling sits in between the usual weak disorder (β= 0) and strong disorder regimes (β> 0). The fluctuation exponents zeta for the polymer endpoint and χfor the free energy depend on αin this regime, with α= 0 corresponding to the usual polymer exponents ζ= 2/3, χ= 1/3 and α>= 1/4 corresponding to the simple random walk exponents ζ= 1/2, χ= 0. For 0 < α< 1/4 the exponents interpolate linearly between these two extremes. At α= 1/4 we exactly identify the limiting distribution of the free energy and the end point of the polymer.

Scaling exponent for the Hopf-Cole solution of KPZ/Stochastic Burgers

We consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_tZ= \partial_x^2 Z - Z \dot W$ on the real line, where $\dot W$ is space-time white noise. $h(t,x)=-\log Z(t,x)$ is interpreted as a solution of the KPZ equation, and $u(t,x)=\partial_x h(t,x)$ as a solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We take $Z(0,x)=\exp\{B(x)\}$ where $B(x)$ is a two-sided Brownian motion, corresponding to the stationary solution of the stochastic Burgers equation. We show that there exist $0< c_1\le c_2 <\infty$ such that $c_1t^{2/3}\le \Var (\log Z(t,x))\le c_2 t^{2/3}.$ Analogous results are obtained for some moments of the correlation functions of $u(t,x)$. In particular, it is shown that the excess diffusivity satisfies $c_1t^{1/3}\le D(t) \le c_2 t^{1/3}.$ The proof uses approximation by weakly asymmetric simple exclusion processes, for which we obtain the microscopic analogies of the results by coupling.

A note on the diffusivity of finite-range asymmetric exclusion processes on Z

The diffusivity $D(t)$ of finite-range asymmetric exclusion processes on $\mathbb Z$ with non-zero drift is expected to be of order $t^{1/3}$. Seppäläinen and Balázs recently proved this conjecture for the nearest neighbor case. We extend their results to general finite range exclusion by proving that the Laplace transform of the diffusivity is of the conjectured order. We also obtain a pointwise upper bound for $D(t)$ the correct order.

Fluctuations of the front in a stochastic combustion model

We consider an interacting particle system on the one dimensional lattice $\bf Z$ modeling combustion. The process depends on two integer parameters $2\le a<M<\infty$. Particles move independently as continuous time simple symmetric random walks except that 1. When a particle jumps to a site which has not been previously visited by any particle, it branches into $a$ particles; 2. When a particle jumps to a site with $M$ particles, it is annihilated. We start from a configuration where all sites to the left of the origin have been previously visited and study the law of large numbers and central limit theorem for $r_t$, the rightmost visited site at time $t$. The proofs are based on the construction of a renewal structure leading to a definition of regeneration times for which good tail estimates can be performed.
