Regularity results for two standard models in elasto-perfect-plasticity theory with hardening

We consider two most studied standard models in the theory of elasto-plasticity with hardening in arbitrary dimension $d\ge 2$, namely, the kinematic hardening and the isotropic hardening problem. While the existence and uniqueness of the solution is very well known, the optimal regularity up to the boundary remains an open problem. Here, we show that in the interior we have Sobolev regularity for the stress and hardening while for their time derivatives we have the "half" derivative with the spatial and time variable. This was well known for the limiting problem but we show that these estimates are uniform and independent of the order of approximation. The main novelty consist of estimates near the boundary. We show that for the stress and the hardening parameter, we control tangential derivative in the Lebesgue space~$L^2$, and for time derivative of the stress and the hardening we control the "half" time derivative and also spatial tangential derivative. Last, for the normal derivative, we show that the stress and the hardening have the $3/5$ derivative with respect to the normal and for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening we show they have the $1/5$ derivative with respect to the normal direction, provided we consider the kinematic hardening or near the Dirichlet boundary. These estimates are independent of dimension. In case, we consider the isotropic hardening near the Neumann boundary we shall obtain $W^{α,2}$ regularity for the stress and the hardening with some $α>1/2$ depending on the dimension and $W^{β,2}$ with some $β> 1/6$ for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening. Finally, in case of kinematic hardening the same regularity estimate holds true also for the velocity gradient.

On regularity of the time derivative for degenerate parabolic systems

We prove regularity estimates for time derivatives of a large class of nonlinear parabolic partial differential systems. This includes the instationary (symmetric) p-Laplace system and models for non Newtonien fluids of powerlaw or Carreau type. By the use of special weak different quotients, adapted to the variational structure we bound fractional derivatives of $u_t$ in time and space direction. Although the estimates presented here are valid under very general assumptions they are a novelty even for the parabolic p-Laplace equation.

On The Interpretation Of The Master Equation

Since its introduction by P.L. Lions in his lectures and seminars at the College de France, see [9], and also the very helpful notes of Cardialaguet [4] on Lions' lectures, the Master Equation has attracted a lot of interest, and various points of view have been expressed, see for example Carmona-Delarue [5], Bensoussan-Frehse-Yam [2], Buckdahn-Li-Peng-Rainer [3]. There are several ways to introduce this type of equation; and in those mentioned works, they involve an argument which is a probability measure, while P.L. Lions has recently proposed the idea of working with the Hilbert space of square integrable random variables. Hence writing the equation is an issue; while another issue is its origin. In this article, we discuss all these various aspects, and our modeling argument relies heavily on a seminar at College de France delivered by P.L. Lions on November 14, 2014.

The Master Equation in Mean Field Theory

In his lectures at College de France, P.L. Lions introduced the concept of Master equation, see [5] for Mean Field Games. It is introduced in a heuristic fashion, from the system of partial differential equations, associated to a Nash equilibrium for a large, but finite, number of players. The method, also explained in[2], consists in a formal analogy of terms. The interest of this equation is that it contains interesting particular cases, which can be studied directly, in particular the system of HJB-FP (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman, Fokker-Planck) equations obtained as the limit of the finite Nash equilibrium game, when the trajectories are independent, see [4]. Usually, in mean field theory, one can bypass the large Nash equilibrium, by introducing the concept of representative agent, whose action is influenced by a distribution of similar agents, and obtains directly the system of HJB-FP equations of interest, see for instance [1]. Apparently, there is no such approach for the Master equation. We show here that it is possible. We first do it for the Mean Field type control problem, for which we interpret completely the Master equation. For the Mean Field Games itself, we solve a related problem, and obtain again the Master equation.
