Global well-posedness for two-dimensional flows of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion

We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterparts of Oldroyd-B and Giesekus models. Considering spatially periodic problem, we prove that for arbitrary initial data and forcing in appropriate $L^2$ spaces, there exists a unique globally defined weak solution to the equations of motion, and more regular initial data and forcing launch a more regular solution with $\bs B$ positive definite everywhere.

On evolutionary problems with a-priori bounded gradients

We study a nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation that can be viewed as a generalization of the heat equation where the temperature gradient is a~priori bounded but the heat flux provides merely \mbox{$L^1$-coercivity}. Applying higher differentiability techniques in space and time, choosing a special weighted norm (equivalent to the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^d$), incorporating finer properties of integrable functions and using the concept of renormalized solution, we prove long-time and large-data existence and uniqueness of weak solution, with an $L^1$-integrable flux, to an initial spatially-periodic problem for all values of a positive model parameter. If this parameter is smaller than $2/(d+1)$, where $d$ denotes the spatial dimension, we obtain higher integrability of the flux. As the developed approach is not restricted to a scalar equation, we also present an analogous result for nonlinear parabolic systems in which the nonlinearity, being the gradient of a strictly convex function, gives an a-priori $L^\infty$-bound on the gradient of the unknown solution.

Large data existence theory for three-dimensional unsteady flows of rate-type viscoelastic fluids with stress diffusion

We prove that there exists a weak solution to a system governing an unsteady flow of a viscoelastic fluid in three dimensions, for arbitrarily large time interval and data. The fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity $v$, coupled with a diffusive variant of a combination of the Oldroyd-B and the Giesekus models for a tensor $\mathbb{B}$. By a proper choice of the constitutive relations for the Helmholtz free energy (which, however, is non-standard in the current literature, despite the fact that this choice is well motivated from the point of view of physics) and for the energy dissipation, we are able to prove that $\mathbb{B}$ enjoys the same regularity as $v$ in the classical three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This enables us to handle any kind of objective derivative of $\mathbb{B}$, thus obtaining existence results for the class of diffusive Johnson-Segalman models as well. Moreover, using a suitable approximation scheme, we are able to show that $\mathbb{B}$ remains positive definite if the initial datum was a positive definite matrix (in a pointwise sense). We also show how the model we are considering can be derived from basic balance equations and thermodynamical principles in a natural way.

On incompressible heat-conducting viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion and purely spherical elastic response

We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploited in the mathematical analysis of the governing equations. In particular, the definition of weak solution is motivated by the thermodynamic basis of the model. The extra stress tensor describing the elastic response of the fluid is in our case purely spherical, which is a simplification from the physical point of view. The model nevertheless exhibits features that require novel mathematical ideas in order to deal with the technically complex structure of the associated internal energy and the more complicated forms of the corresponding entropy and energy fluxes. The paper provides the first rigorous proof of the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to the governing equations for \emph{coupled thermo-mechanical processes} in viscoelastic rate-type fluids.

On the dynamic slip boundary condition for Navier--Stokes-like problems

The choice of the boundary conditions in mechanical problems has to reflect the interaction of the considered material with the surface, despite the assumption of the no-slip condition is preferred to avoid boundary terms in the analysis and slipping effects are usually overlooked. Besides the "static slip models", there are phenomena not accurately described by them, e.g. in the moment when the slip changes rapidly, the wall shear stress and the slip can exhibit a sudden overshoot and subsequent relaxation. When these effects become significant, the so-called dynamic slip phenomenon occurs. We develop a mathematical analysis of Navier-Stokes-like problems with dynamic slip boundary condition, which requires a proper generalisation of the Gelfand triplet and the corresponding function spaces setting.

Regularity results for two standard models in elasto-perfect-plasticity theory with hardening

We consider two most studied standard models in the theory of elasto-plasticity with hardening in arbitrary dimension $d\ge 2$, namely, the kinematic hardening and the isotropic hardening problem. While the existence and uniqueness of the solution is very well known, the optimal regularity up to the boundary remains an open problem. Here, we show that in the interior we have Sobolev regularity for the stress and hardening while for their time derivatives we have the "half" derivative with the spatial and time variable. This was well known for the limiting problem but we show that these estimates are uniform and independent of the order of approximation. The main novelty consist of estimates near the boundary. We show that for the stress and the hardening parameter, we control tangential derivative in the Lebesgue space~$L^2$, and for time derivative of the stress and the hardening we control the "half" time derivative and also spatial tangential derivative. Last, for the normal derivative, we show that the stress and the hardening have the $3/5$ derivative with respect to the normal and for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening we show they have the $1/5$ derivative with respect to the normal direction, provided we consider the kinematic hardening or near the Dirichlet boundary. These estimates are independent of dimension. In case, we consider the isotropic hardening near the Neumann boundary we shall obtain $W^{α,2}$ regularity for the stress and the hardening with some $α>1/2$ depending on the dimension and $W^{β,2}$ with some $β> 1/6$ for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening. Finally, in case of kinematic hardening the same regularity estimate holds true also for the velocity gradient.

Existence and qualitative theory for nonlinear elliptic systems with a nonlinear interface condition used in electrochemistry

We study a nonlinear elliptic system with prescribed inner interface conditions. These models are frequently used in physical system where the ion transfer plays the important role for example in modelling of nano-layer growth or Li-on batteries. The key difficulty of the model consists of the rapid or very slow growth of nonlinearity in the constitutive equation inside the domain or on the interface. While on the interface, one can avoid the difficulty by proving a kind of maximum principle of a solution, inside the domain such regularity for the flux is not available in principle since the constitutive law is discontinuous with respect to the spatial variable. The key result of the paper is the existence theory for these problems, where we require that the leading functional satisfies either the delta-two or the nabla-two condition. This assumption is applicable in case of fast (exponential) growth as well as in the case of very slow (logarithmically superlinear) growth.

On a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress--diffusion

We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.

Analysis of a viscosity model for concentrated polymers

The paper is concerned with a class of mathematical models for polymeric fluids, which involves the coupling of the Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous, incompressible, constant-density fluid with a parabolic-hyperbolic integro-differential equation describing the evolution of the polymer distribution function in the solvent, and a parabolic integro-differential equation for the evolution of the monomer density function in the solvent. The viscosity coefficient appearing in the balance of linear momentum equation in the Navier-Stokes system includes dependence on the shear-rate as well as on the weight-averaged polymer chain length. The system of partial differential equations under consideration captures the impact of polymerization and depolymerization effects on the viscosity of the fluid. We prove the existence of global-in-time, large-data weak solutions under fairly general hypotheses.

Existence and smoothness for a class of $n$D models in elasticity theory of small deformations

We consider a model for deformations of a homogeneous isotropic body, whose shear modulus remains constant, but its bulk modulus can be a highly nonlinear function. We show that for a general class of such models, in an arbitrary space dimension, the respective PDE problem has a unique solution. Moreover, this solution enjoys interior smoothness. This is the first regularity result for elasticity problems that covers the most natural space dimension $3$ and that captures behaviour of many typical elastic materials (considered in the small deformations) like rubber, polymer gels or concrete.

Existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems

We establish existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to certain nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. We introduce structural asymptotic assumptions of Uhlenbeck type on the nonlinearity, which are sufficient and in many cases also necessary for building such a theory. We provide a unified approach that leads qualitatively to the same theory as that one available for linear elliptic problems with continuous coeffcients, e.g. the Poisson equation. The result is based on several novel tools that are of independent interest: local and global estimates for (non)linear elliptic systems in weighted Lebesgue spaces with Muckenhoupt weights, a generalization of the celebrated div{curl lemma for identification of a weak limit in border line spaces and the introduction of a Lipschitz approximation that is stable in weighted Sobolev spaces.

On unified theory for scalar conservation laws with fluxes and sources discontinuous with respect to the unknown

We deal with the Cauchy problem for multi-dimensional scalar conservation laws, where the fluxes and the source terms can be discontinuous functions of the unknown. The main novelty of the paper is the introduction of a~kinetic formulation for the considered problem. To handle the discontinuities we work in the framework of re-parametrization of the flux and the source functions, which was previously used for Kružkov entropy solutions. Within this approach we obtain a fairly complete picture: existence of entropy measure valued solutions, entropy weak solutions and their equivalence to the kinetic solution. The results of existence and uniqueness follow under the assumption of Hölder continuity at zero of the flux. The source term, what is another novelty for the studies on problems with discontinuous flux, is only assumed to be one-side Lipschitz, not necessarily monotone function.

Unsteady Flows of Fluids with Pressure Dependent Viscosity in Unbounded Domains

In order to describe behavior of various liquid-like materials at high pressures, incompressible fluid models with pressure dependent viscosity seem to be a suitable choice. In the context of implicit constitutive relations involving the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient these models are consistent with standard procedures of continuum mechanics. Understanding mathematical properties of governing equations is connected with various types of idealization, some of them lead to studies in unbounded domains. In this paper, we first bring up several characteristic features concerning fluids with pressure dependent viscosity. Then we study three-dimensional flows of a class of fluids with the viscosity depending on the pressure and the shear rate. By means of higher differentiability methods we establish large data existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem. This seems to be a first result that analyzes flows of considered fluids in unbounded domains. Even in the context of purely shear rate dependent fluids of a power-law type the result presented here improves some of earlier works.
