Distinguishing exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s with Heegaard Floer homology

Attaching a Casson handle to a slice disk complement yields a smooth 4-manifold that is homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^4$. We show that if two slice knots have sufficiently different knot Floer homology, then the resulting exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s made using the simplest positive Casson handle are not diffeomorphic, giving us a countably infinite family of pairwise nondiffeomorphic chiral exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$'s. Our main tool is Gadgil's end Floer homology and we use this to produce families of exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ with various phenomena. As an application, we reprove a result of Bižaca-Etnyre that $Y \times \mathbb{R}$, where $Y$ is any closed $3$-manifold, has infinitely many distinct smooth structures.

PL-genus of surfaces in homology balls

We consider manifold-knot pairs $(Y,K)$ where $Y$ is a homology sphere that bounds a homology ball. We show that the minimum genus of a PL surface $Σ$ in a homology ball $X$ such that $\partial (X, Σ) = (Y, K)$ can be arbitrarily large. Equivalently, the minimum genus of a surface cobordism in a homology cobordism from $(Y, K)$ to any knot in $S^3$ can be arbitrarily large. The proof relies on Heegaard Floer homology.

More concordance homomorphisms from knot Floer homology

We define an infinite family of linearly independent, integer-valued smooth concordance homomorphisms. Our homomorphisms are explicitly computable and rely on local equivalence classes of knot Floer complexes over the ring $\mathbb{F}[U, V]/(UV=0)$. We compare our invariants to other concordance homomorphisms coming from knot Floer homology, and discuss applications to topologically slice knots, concordance genus, and concordance unknotting number.

Unknotting number and cabling

The unknotting number of knots is a difficult quantity to compute, and even its behavior under basic satelliting operations is not understood. We establish a lower bound on the unknotting number of cable knots and iterated cable knots purely in terms of the winding number of the pattern. The proof uses Alishahi-Eftekhary's bounds on unknotting number from knot Floer homology together with Hanselman-Watson's computation of the knot Floer homology of cables in terms of immersed curves in the punctured torus.

Ribbon knots, cabling, and handle decompositions

The fusion number of a ribbon knot is the minimal number of 1-handles needed to construct a ribbon disk. The strong homotopy fusion number of a ribbon knot is the minimal number of 2-handles in a handle decomposition of a ribbon disk complement. We demonstrate that these invariants behave completely differently under cabling by showing that the (p,1)-cable of any ribbon knot with fusion number one has strong homotopy fusion number one and fusion number p. Our main tools are Juhász-Miller-Zemke's bound on fusion number coming from the torsion order of knot Floer homology and Hanselman-Watson's cabling formula for immersed curves.

Applications of involutive Heegaard Floer homology

We use Heegaard Floer homology to define an invariant of homology cobordism. This invariant is isomorphic to a summand of the reduced Heegaard Floer homology of a rational homology sphere equipped with a spin structure and is analogous to Stoffregen's connected Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. We use this invariant to study the structure of the homology cobordism group and, along the way, compute the involutive correction terms for certain families of three-manifolds.

A note on surgery obstructions and hyperbolic integer homology spheres

Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.

Cable links and L-space surgeries

An L-space link is a link in $S^3$ on which all sufficiently large integral surgeries are L-spaces. We prove that for m, n relatively prime, the r-component cable link $K_{rm,rn}$ is an L-space link if and only if K is an L-space knot and $n/m \geq 2g(K)-1$. We also compute HFL-minus and HFL-hat of an L-space cable link in terms of its Alexander polynomial. As an application, we confirm a conjecture of Licata regarding the structure of HFL-hat for (n,n) torus links.

A note on the concordance invariants epsilon and upsilon

Ozsvath-Stipsicz-Szabo recently defined a one-parameter family, upsilon of K at t, of concordance invariants associated to the knot Floer complex. We compare their invariant to the {-1, 0, 1}-valued concordance invariant epsilon, which is also associated to the knot Floer complex. In particular, we give an example of a knot K with upsilon uniformly equal to zero but epsilon non-zero.

Berge-Gabai knots and L-space satellite operations

Let $P(K)$ be a satellite knot where the pattern, $P$, is a Berge-Gabai knot (i.e., a knot in the solid torus with a non-trivial solid torus Dehn surgery), and the companion, $K$, is a non-trivial knot in $S^3$. We prove that $P(K)$ is an L-space knot if and only if $K$ is an L-space knot and $P$ is sufficiently positively twisted relative to the genus of $K$. This generalizes the result for cables due to Hedden and the first author.

Bordered Heegaard Floer homology and the tau-invariant of cable knots

We define a concordance invariant, epsilon(K), associated to the knot Floer complex of K, and give a formula for the Ozsváth-Szabó concordance invariant tau of K_{p,q}, the (p,q)-cable of a knot K, in terms of p, q, tau(K), and epsilon(K). We also describe the behavior of epsilon under cabling, allowing one to compute tau of iterated cables. Various properties and applications of epsilon are also discussed.

On the concordance genus of topologically slice knots

The concordance genus of a knot K is the minimum Seifert genus of all knots smoothly concordant to K. Concordance genus is bounded below by the 4-ball genus and above by the Seifert genus. We give a lower bound for the concordance genus of K coming from the knot Floer complex of K. As an application, we prove that there are topologically slice knots with 4-ball genus equal to one and arbitrarily large concordance genus.
