An ergodic theorem for quantum processes with applications to matrix product states

Any discrete quantum process is represented by a sequence of quantum channels. We consider ergodic quantum processes obtained by a map that takes the points along the trajectory of a discrete ergodic dynamical system to the space of quantum channels. Under natural irreducibility conditions, we obtain a theorem showing that the state under such a process converges exponentially fast to an ergodic sequence depending on the process, but independent of the initial state. As an application, we describe the thermodynamic limit of ergodic matrix product states and prove that the 2-point correlations of local observables in such states decay exponentially with their distance in the bulk.

Theory of Ergodic Quantum Processes

The generic behavior of quantum systems has long been of theoretical and practical interest. Any quantum process is represented by a sequence of quantum channels. We consider general ergodic sequences of stochastic channels with arbitrary correlations and non-negligible decoherence. Ergodicity includes and vastly generalizes random independence. We obtain a theorem which shows that the composition of such a sequence of channels converges exponentially fast to a replacement (rank-one) channel. Using this theorem, we derive the limiting behavior of translation-invariant channels and stochastically independent random channels. We then use our formalism to describe the thermodynamic limit of ergodic matrix product states. We derive formulas for the expectation value of a local observable and prove that the two-point correlations of local observables decay exponentially. We then analytically compute the entanglement spectrum across any cut, by which the bipartite entanglement entropy (i.e., Rényi or von Neumann) across an arbitrary cut can be computed exactly. Other physical implications of our results are that most Floquet phases of matter are metastable and that noisy random circuits in the large depth limit will be trivial as far as their quantum entanglement is concerned. To obtain these results, we bridge quantum information theory to dynamical systems and random matrix theory.

Diffusion in the Mean for an Ergodic Schrödinger Equation Perturbed by a Fluctuating Potential

Diffusive scaling of position moments and a central limit theorem are obtained for the mean position of a quantum particle hopping on a cubic lattice and subject to a random potential consisting of a large static part and a small part that fluctuates stochastically in time. If the static random potential is strong enough to induce complete localization in the absence of time dependent noise, then the diffusion constant is shown to go to zero proportional to the square of the strength of the time dependent part.

Diffusive scaling for all moments of the Markov Anderson model

We consider a tight-binding Schroedinger equation with time dependent diagonal noise, given as a function of a Markov process. This model was considered previously by Kang and Schenker (J. Stat. Phys., 134(5-6):1005, arXiv:0808.2784), who proved that the wave propagates diffusively. We revisit the proof of diffusion so as to obtain a uniform bound on exponential moments of the wave amplitude and a central limit theorem that implies, in particular, diffusive scaling for all position moments of the mean wave amplitude.

How large is large? Estimating the critical disorder for the Anderson model

Complete localization is shown to hold for the $d$-dimensional Anderson model with uniformly distributed random potentials provided the disorder strength $λ>λ_{And}$ where $λ_{\text{And}}$ satisfies $λ_{\text{And}}=μ_d e \ln λ_{\text{And}}$ with $μ_d$ the self-avoiding walk connective constant for the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Notably $λ_{\text{And}}$ is precisely the large disorder threshold proposed by Anderson in 1958.

Estimating complex eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators via complex dilations

The phenomenon "hypo-coercivity," i.e., the increased rate of contraction for a semi-group upon adding a large skew-adjoint part to the generator, is considered for 1D semigroups generated by the Schrödinger operators $-\partial^2_x + x^2 + iγ f (x)$ with a complex potential. For $f$ of the special form$ f (x) = 1/(1 + |x|^κ)$, it is shown using complex dilations that the real part of eigenvalues of the operator are larger than a constant times $|γ|^{2/(κ+2)}$.

Eigenvector localization for random band matrices with power law band width

It is shown that certain ensembles of random matrices with entries that vanish outside a band around the diagonal satisfy a localization condition on the resolvent which guarantees that eigenvectors have strong overlap with a vanishing fraction of standard basis vectors, provided the band width $W$ raised to a power $μ$ remains smaller than the matrix size $N$. For a Gaussian band ensemble, with matrix elements given by i.i.d. centered Gaussians within a band of width $W$, the estimate $μ\le 8$ holds.
