Second moments of Rankin-Selberg convolution and shifted Dirichlet series

In this paper we work over $Γ_0(N)$, for any $N$ and write the spectral moment of a product of two distinct Rankin-Selberg convolutions at a general point on the critical line $\frac{1}{2}+it$ as a main term plus a sharp error term in the $t$ aspect and the spectral aspect. As a result we obtain hybrid Weyl type subconvexity results in the $t$ and spectral aspects. Also, for fixed modular forms $f$, $g$ of even weight $k\geq 4$ we show there exists a Maass cusp form $u_j$ such that $L(1/2, f\times u_j)$, $L(1/2, g\times u_j)$ are simultaneous non-zero.

Multiple Dirichlet Series and Shifted Convolutions

We define, and obtain the meromorphic continuation of, shifted Rankin-Selberg convolutions in one and two variables. As sample applications, this continuation is used to obtain estimates for single and double shifted sums and a Burgess-type bound for $L$-series associated to modular forms of arbitrary central character. Further applications are furnished by subsequent works by the authors and their colleagues.

Shifted Multiple Dirichlet Series

We develop certain aspects of the theory of shifted multiple Dirichlet series and study their meromorphic continuations. These continuations are used to obtain explicit spectral first and second moments of Rankin-Selberg convolutions. One consequence is a Weyl type estimate for the Rankin-Selberg convolution of a holomorphic cusp form and a Maass form with spectral parameter $|t_j|\le T$, namely: $$ \left| L\left(\frac{1}{2}+ir, f\times u_j\right) \right| \ll_N T^{2/3+ε}, $$ uniformly, for $|r| \le T^{2/3}$, with the implied constant depending only on $f$ and the level $N$.

Second Moments and simultaneous non-vanishing of GL(2) automorphic L-series

We obtain a second moment formula for the L-series of holomorphic cusp forms, averaged over twists by Dirichlet characters modulo a fixed conductor Q. The estimate obtained has no restrictions on Q, with an error term that has a close to optimal power savings in the exponent. However, one of the contributions to the main term is a special value of a shifted double Dirichlet series. We show that this special value is small on average, and obtain a corresponding estimate for a mean value of the second moment over Q. This mean value is non-zero even when applied to a product of two distinct L-series, leading to a simultaneous non-vanishing result. Our approach uses the theory of shifted multiple Dirichlet series to obtain some refined estimates for double shifted sums. These estimates are the key ingredient in the second moment estimate.

The first non-vanishing quadratic twist of an automorphic L-series

Let pi be an automorphic representation on GL(r, A_Q) for r=1, 2, or 3. Let d be a fundamental discriminant and chi_d the corresponding quadratic Dirichlet character. We consider the question of the least d, relative to the data (level, weight or eigenvalue) of pi, such that the central value of the twisted L-series is nonzero, i.e. L(1/2, pi x chi_d) != 0. For example, let N be the level of pi. Using multiple Dirichlet series, we prove the nonvanishing of a central twisted $L$-value with d << N^{1/2} for GL(1), d << N^1 for GL(2), and d << N^2 for GL(3), the last case assuming that a certain character is quadratic (see Theorem 1.13). We work over Q for simplicity but the method generalizes to arbitrary number fields. We conjecture that in all cases there should be such a twist with d << N^epsilon. This would follow from a Lindelof-type bound for a multiple Dirichlet series which does not have an Euler product, but is constructed from a Rankin-Selberg integral applied to automorphic forms which are eigenfunctions of Hecke operators.
