Lattice points counting and bounds on periods of Maass forms

We provide a "soft" proof for non-trivial bounds on spherical, hyperbolic and unipotent Fourier coefficients of a fixed Maass form for a general co-finite lattice $Γ$ in $PGL(2,R)$. We use the amplification method based on the Airy type phenomenon for corresponding matrix coefficients and an effective Selberg type pointwise asymptotic for the lattice points counting in various homogeneous spaces for $PGL(2,R)$.

Multiple Dirichlet Series and Shifted Convolutions

We define, and obtain the meromorphic continuation of, shifted Rankin-Selberg convolutions in one and two variables. As sample applications, this continuation is used to obtain estimates for single and double shifted sums and a Burgess-type bound for $L$-series associated to modular forms of arbitrary central character. Further applications are furnished by subsequent works by the authors and their colleagues.

Nodal domains of Maass forms II

In Part I we gave a polynomial growth lower-bound for the number of nodal domains of a Hecke-Maass cuspform in a compact part of the modular surface, assuming a Lindelöf hypothesis. That was a consequence of a topological argument and known subconvexity estimates, together with new sharp lower-bound restriction theorems for the Maass forms. This paper deals with the same question for general (compact or not) arithmetic surfaces which have a reflective symmetry. The topological argument is extended and representation theoretic methods are needed for the restriction theorems, together with results of Waldspurger. Various explicit examples are given and studied.

Nodal domains of Maass forms I

This paper deals with some questions that have received a lot of attention since they were raised by Hejhal and Rackner in their 1992 numerical computations of Maass forms. We establish sharp upper and lower bounds for the $L^2$-restrictions of these forms to certain curves on the modular surface. These results, together with the Lindelof Hypothesis and known subconvex $L^\infty$-bounds are applied to prove that locally the number of nodal domains of such a form goes to infinity with its eigenvalue.

Torus periods of automorphic functions and the meromorphic continuation of related Dirichlet Series

We consider modular functions (i.e., the Eisenstein series and Hecke-Maass forms) for the group PSL(2,Z). We fix a quadratic number field E. This gives rise to twisted (by a Hecke character of the field E) periods of a modular function along the torus corresponding to E. We prove meromorphic continuation for a Dirichlet series generated by these twisted periods.

Norms of geodesic restrictions for eigenfunctions on hyperbolic surfaces and representation theory

We consider restrictions along closed geodesics and geodesic circles for eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface. We obtain a non-trivial bound on the L^2-norm of such restrictions as the eigenvalue tends to infinity. We use methods from the theory of automorphic functions and in particular the uniqueness of invariant functionals on irreducible unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

Subconvexity bounds for triple L-functions and representation theory

We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value of the triple L-function. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

Analytic continuation of representations and estimates of automorphic forms

Properties of analytic vectors in representations of SL(2,R) are used to give new bounds for the triple products recently considered by P. Sarnak. A conjecture of Sarnak about such products is proved. The results of this paper generalize results of A. Good and M. Jutila about special cases, but the techniques are entirely different. One consequence of these results is a new estimate of the magnitude of the Fourier coefficients of cusp forms for non-arithmetic sub-groups of SL(2,R).
