Noncommutative Symmetric Functions and Lagrange Inversion II: Noncrossing partitions and the Farahat-Higman algebra

We introduce a new pair of mutually dual bases of noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions, and use it to derive generalizations of several results on the reduced incidence algebra of the lattice of noncrossing partitions. As a consequence, we obtain a quasi-symmetric version of the Farahat-Higman algebra.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras in noncommutative probabilility

We prove that the generalized moment-cumulant relations introduced in [arXiv:1711.00219] are given by the action of the Eulerian idempotents on the Solomon-Tits algebras, whose direct sum builds up the Hopf algebra of Word Quasi-Symmetric Functions $\WQSym$. We prove $t$-analogues of these identities (in which the coefficient of $t$ gives back the original version), and a similar $t$-analogue of Goldberg's formula for the coefficients of the Hausdorff series. This amounts to the determination of the action of all the Eulerian idempotents on a product of exponentials.

Duplicial algebras and Lagrange inversion

We provide operadic interpretations for two Hopf subalgebras of the algebra of parking functions. The Catalan subalgebra is identified with the free duplicial algebra on one generator, and the Schröder subalgebra is interpreted by means of a new operad, which we call triduplicial. The noncommutative Lagrange inversion formula is then interpreted in terms of duplicial structures. The generic solution of the noncommutative inversion problem appears as the formal sum of all parking functions. This suggests that combinatorial generating functions derived by functional inversion should be obtainable by evaluating a suitable character on this generic solution. This idea is illustrated by means of the Narayana polynomials, of which we obtain bivariate "super-analogues" by lifting to parking functions a classical character of the algebra of symmetric functions. Other characters, such as evaluation of symmetric functions on a binomial element, are also discussed.

Quadri-algebras, preLie algebras, and the Catalan family of Lie idempotents

We compute the expansion of the Catalan family of Lie idempotents introduced in [Menous et al., Adv. Applied Math. 51 (2013), 177-22] on the PBW basis of the Lie module. It is found that the coefficient of a tree depends only on its number of left and right internal edges. In particular, the Catalan idempotents belong to a preLie algebra based on naked binary trees, of which we identify several Lie and preLie subalgebras.

Noncommutative Bell polynomials and the dual immaculate basis

We define a new family of noncommutative Bell polynomials in the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions and relate it to the dual immaculate basis of quasi-symmetric functions. We obtain noncommutative versions of Grinberg's results [Canad. J. Math. 69 (2017), 21--53], and interpret them in terms of the tridendriform structure of WQSym. We then present a variant of Rey's self-dual Hopf algebra of set partitions [FPSAC'07, Tianjin] adapted to our noncommutative Bell polynomials and give a complete description of the Bell equivalence classes as linear extensions of explicit posets.

Rayleigh-Schrödinger series and Birkhoff decomposition

We derive new expressions for the Rayleigh-Schrödinger seriesdescribing the perturbation of eigenvalues of quantumHamiltonians. The method, somehow close to the so-called dimensionalrenormalization in quantum field theory, involves the Birkhoffdecomposition of some Laurent series built up out of explicit fullynon-resonant terms present in the usual expression of theRayleigh-Schrödinger series. Our results provide new combinational formulae and a new way \ff{of deriving} perturbation series in Quantum Mechanics. More generally we prove that such a decomposition provides solutions of general normal form problems in Lie algebras.

Combinatorics of Poincaré's and Schröder's equations

We investigate the combinatorial properties of the functional equation $ϕ[h(z)]=h(qz)$ for the conjugation of a formal diffeomorphism $ϕ$ of $\mathbb{C}$ to its linear part $z\mapsto qz$. This is done by interpreting the functional equation in terms of symmetric functions, and then lifting it to noncommutative symmetric functions. We describe explicitly the expansion of the solution in terms of plane trees and prove that its expression on the ribbon basis has coefficients in ${\mathbb N}[q]$ after clearing the denominators $(q)_n$. We show that the conjugacy equation can be lifted to a quadratic fixed point equation in the free triduplicial algebra on one generator. This can be regarded as a $q$-deformation of the duplicial interpretation of the noncommutative Lagrange inversion formula. Finally, these calculations are interpreted in terms of the group of the operad of Stasheff polytopes, and are related to Ecalle's arborified expansion by means of morphisms between various Hopf algebras of trees.

Super quasi-symmetric functions via Young diagrams

We consider the multivariate generating series $F_P$ of $P$-partitions in infinitely many variables $x_1, x_2 , \dots$. For some family of ranked posets $P$, it is natural to consider an analog $N_P$ with two infinite alphabets. When we collapse these two alphabets, we trivially recover $F_P$. Our main result is the converse, that is, the explicit construction of a map sending back $F_P$ onto $N_P$. We also give a noncommutative analog of the latter. An application is the construction of a basis of WQSym with a non-negative multiplication table, which lifts a basis of QSym introduced by K. Luoto.

Binary shuffle bases for quasi-symmetric functions

We construct bases of quasi-symmetric functions whose product rule is given by the shuffle of binary words, as for multiple zeta values in their integral representations, and then extend the construction to the algebra of free quasi-symmetric functions colored by positive integers. As a consequence, we show that the fractions introduced in [Guo and Xie, Ramanujan Jour. 25 (2011) 307-317] provide a realization of this algebra by rational moulds extending that of free quasi-symmetric functions given in [Chapoton et al., Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2008, no. 9, Art. ID rnn018].

Deformations of shuffles and quasi-shuffles

We investigate deformations of the shuffl e Hopf algebra structure Sh(A) which can be de fined on the tensor algebra over a commutative algebra A. Such deformations, leading for example to the quasi-shuffl e algebra QSh(A), can be interpreted as natural transformations of the functor Sh, regarded as a functor from commutative nonunital algebras to coalgebras. We prove that the monoid of natural endomophisms of the functor Sh is isomorphic to the monoid of formal power series in one variable without constant term under composition, so that in particular, its natural automorphisms are in bijection with formal diffeomorphisms of the line. These transformations can be interpreted as elements of the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions WQSym, and in turn de fine deformations of its structure. This leads to a new embedding of free quasi-symmetric functions into WQSym, whose relevance is illustrated by a simple and transparent proof of Goldberg's formula for the coe cients of the Hausdorff series.

Entanglement of four qubit systems: a geometric atlas with polynomial compass I (the finite world)

We investigate the geometry of the four qubit systems by means of algebraic geometry and invariant theory, which allows us to interpret certain entangled states as algebraic varieties. More precisely we describe the nullcone, i.e., the set of states annihilated by all invariant polynomials, and also the so called third secant variety, which can be interpreted as the generalization of GHZ-states for more than three qubits. All our geometric descriptions go along with algorithms which allow us to identify any given state in the nullcone or in the third secant variety as a point of one of the 47 varieties described in the paper. These 47 varieties correspond to 47 non-equivalent entanglement patterns, which reduce to 15 different classes if we allow permutations of the qubits.

Geometric descriptions of entangled states by auxiliaries varieties

The aim of the paper is to propose geometric descriptions of multipartite entangled states using algebraic geometry. In the context of this paper, geometric means each stratum of the Hilbert space, corresponding to an entangled state, is an open subset of an algebraic variety built by classical geometric constructions (tangent lines, secant lines) from the set of separable states. In this setting we describe well-known classifications of multipartite entanglement such as $2\times 2\times(n+1)$, for $n\geq 1$, quantum systems and a new example with the $2\times 3\times 3$ quantum system. Our description completes the approach of Miyake and makes stronger connections with recent work of algebraic geometers. Moreover for the quantum systems detailed in this paper we propose an algorithm, based on the classical theory of invariants, to decide to which subvariety of the Hilbert space a given state belongs.

Mould calculus, polyhedral cones, and characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras

We describe a method for constructing characters of combinatorial Hopf algebras by means of integrals over certain polyhedral cones. This is based on ideas from resurgence theory, in particular on the construction of well-behaved averages induced by diffusion processes on the real line. We give several interpretations and proofs of the main result in terms of noncommutative symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, as well as generalizations involving matrix quasi-symmetric functions. The interpretation of noncommutative symmetric functions as alien operators in resurgence theory is also discussed, and a new family of Lie idempotents of descent algebras is derived from this interpretation.

Noncommutative symmetric functions with matrix parameters

We define new families of noncommutative symmetric functions and quasi-symmetric functions depending on two matrices of parameters, and more generally on parameters associated with paths in a binary tree. Appropriate specializations of both matrices then give back the two-vector families of Hivert, Lascoux, and Thibon and the noncommutative Macdonald functions of Bergeron and Zabrocki.

Supercharacters, symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and related Hopf algebras

We identify two seemingly disparate structures: supercharacters, a useful way of doing Fourier analysis on the group of unipotent uppertriangular matrices with coefficients in a finite field, and the ring of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. Each is a Hopf algebra and the two are isomorphic as such. This allows developments in each to be transferred. The identification suggests a rich class of examples for the emerging field of combinatorial Hopf algebras.

The algebraic combinatorics of snakes

Snakes are analogues of alternating permutations defined for any Coxeter group. We study these objects from the point of view of combinatorial Hopf algebras, such as noncommutative symmetric functions and their generalizations. The main purpose is to show that several properties of the generating functions of snakes, such as differential equations or closed form as trigonometric functions, can be lifted at the level of noncommutative symmetric functions or free quasi-symmetric functions. The results take the form of algebraic identities for type B noncommutative symmetric functions, noncommutative supersymmetric functions and colored free quasi-symmetric functions.

Combinatorial Hopf algebras, noncommutative Hall-Littlewood functions, and permutation tableaux

We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according to crossings; the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of descent bottoms according to occurrences of the generalized pattern 2-31.

Free quasi-symmetric functions and descent algebras for wreath products, and noncommutative multi-symmetric functions

We introduce analogs of the Hopf algebra of Free quasi-symmetric functions with bases labelled by colored permutations. When the color set is a semigroup, an internal product can be introduced. This leads to the construction of generalized descent algebras associated with wreath products $Γ\wr\SG_n$ and to the corresponding generalizations of quasi-symmetric functions. The associated Hopf algebras appear as natural analogs of McMahon's multisymmetric functions. As a consequence, we obtain an internal product on ordinary multi-symmetric functions. We extend these constructions to Hopf algebras of colored parking functions, colored non-crossing partitions and parking functions of type B.

Superization and (q,t)-specialization in combinatorial Hopf algebras

We extend a classical construction on symmetric functions, the superization process, to several combinatorial Hopf algebras, and obtain analogs of the hook-content formula for the (q,t)-specializations of various bases. Exploiting the dendriform structures yields in particular (q,t)-analogs of the Bjorner-Wachs q-hook-length formulas for binary trees, and similar formulas for plane trees.

Permutation statistics related to a class of noncommutative symmetric functions and generalizations of the Genocchi numbers

We prove conjectures of the third author [L. Tevlin, Proc. FPSAC'07, Tianjin] on two new bases of noncommutative symmetric functions: the transition matrices from the ribbon basis have nonnegative integral coefficients. This is done by means of two composition-valued statistics on permutations and packed words, which generalize the combinatorics of Genocchi numbers.

Trees, functional equations, and combinatorial Hopf algebras

One of the main virtues of trees is to represent formal solutions of various functional equations which can be cast in the form of fixed point problems. Basic examples include differential equations and functional (Lagrange) inversion in power series rings. When analyzed in terms of combinatorial Hopf algebras, the simplest examples yield interesting algebraic identities or enumerative results.

preprint2006arXiv

Unitary invariants of qubit systems

We give an algorithm allowing to construct bases of local unitary invariants of pure k-qubit states from the knowledge of polynomial covariants of the group of invertible local filtering operations. The simplest invariants obtained in this way are explicited and compared to various known entanglement measures. Complete sets of generators are obtained for up to four qubits, and the structure of the invariant algebras is discussed in detail.

preprint2005arXiv

Hopf algebras and dendriform structures arising from parking functions

We introduce a graded Hopf algebra based on the set of parking functions (hence of dimension (n+1)^{n-1} in degree n). This algebra can be embedded into a noncommutative polynomial algebra in infinitely many variables. We determine its structure, and show that it admits natural quotients and subalgebras whose graded components have dimensions respectively given by the Schroder numbers (plane trees), the Catalan numbers, and powers of 3. These smaller algebras are always bialgebras and belong to some family of di- or tri-algebras occuring in the works of Loday and Ronco. Moreover, the fundamental notion of parkization allows one to endow the set of parking functions of fixed length with an associative multiplication (different from the one coming from the Shi arrangement), leading to a generalization of the internal product of symmetric functions. Several of the intermediate algebras are stable under this operation. Among them, one finds the Solomon descent algebra but also a new algebra based on a Catalan set, admitting the Solomon algebra as a left ideal.

Higher order peak algebras

Using the theory of noncommutative symmetric functions, we introduce the higher order peak algebras, a sequence of graded Hopf algebras which contain the descent algebra and the usual peak algebra as initial cases (N = 1 and N = 2). We compute their Hilbert series, introduce and study several combinatorial bases, and establish various algebraic identities related to the multisection of formal power series with noncommutative coefficients.
