Bergman bundles and applications to the geometry of compact complex manifolds

We introduce the concept of Bergman bundle attached to a hermitian manifold X, assuming the manifold X to be compact - although the results are local for a large part. The Bergman bundle is some sort of infinite dimensional very ample Hilbert bundle whose fibers are isomorphic to the standard L${}^2$ Hardy space on the complex unit ball; however the bundle is locally trivial only in the real analytic category, and its complex structure is strongly twisted. We compute the Chern curvature of the Bergman bundle, and show that it is strictly positive. As a potential application, we investigate a long standing and still unsolved conjecture of Siu on the invariance of plurigenera in the general situation of polarized families of compact K{ä}hler manifolds.

Monge-Ampère functionals for the curvature tensor of a holomorphic vector bundle

Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle on a projective manifold $X$ such that $\det E$ is ample. We introduce three functionals $Φ_P$ related to Griffiths, Nakano and dual Nakano positivity respectively. They can be used to define new concepts of volume for the vector bundle $E$, by means of generalized Monge-Ampère integrals of $Φ_P(Θ_{E,h})$, where $Θ_{E,h}$ is the Chern curvature tensor of $(E,h)$. These volumes are shown to satisfy optimal Chern class inequalities. We also prove that the functionals $Φ_P$ give rise in a natural way to elliptic differential systems of Hermitian-Yang-Mills type for the curvature, in such a way that the related $P$-positivity threshold of $E\otimes(\det E)^t$, where $t>-1/{\rm rank} E$, can possibly be investigated by studying the infimum of exponents $t$ for which the Yang-Mills differential system has a solution.

Recent results on the Kobayashi and Green-Griffiths-Lang conjectures

The study of entire holomorphic curves contained in projective algebraic varieties is intimately related to fascinating questions of geometry and number theory -- especially through the concepts of curvature and positivity which are central themes in Kodaira's contributions to mathematics. The aim of these lectures is to present recent results concerning the geometric side of the problem. The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over~${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety $Y$ of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties and jet bundles, we show that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. It is possible to exploit similar techniques to investigate a famous conjecture of Shoshichi Kobayashi (1970), according to which a generic algebraic hypersurface of dimension $n$ and of sufficiently large degree $d\ge d\_n$ in the complex projective space $\bP^{n+1}$ is hyperbolic: in the early 2000's, Yum-Tong Siu proposed a strategy that led in 2015 to a proof based on a clever use of slanted vector fields on jet spaces, combined with Nevanlinna theory arguments. In 2016, the conjecture has been settled in a different way by Damian Brotbek, making a more direct use of Wronskian differential operators and associated multiplier ideals; shortly afterwards, Ya Deng showed how the proof could be modified to yield an explicit value of $d\_n$. We give here a short proof based on a drastic simplification of their ideas, along with a further improvement of Deng's bound, namely $d\_n=\lfloor\frac{1}{5}(en)^{2n+2}\rfloor$.

Algebraic embeddings of smooth almost complex structures

The goal of this work is to prove an embedding theorem for compact almost complex manifolds into complex algebraic varieties. It is shown that every almost complex structure can be realized by the transverse structure to an algebraic distribution on an affine algebraic variety, namely an algebraic subbundle of the tangent bundle. In fact, there even exist universal embedding spaces for this problem, and their dimensions grow quadratically with respect to the dimension of the almost complex manifold to embed. We give precise variation formulas for the induced almost complex structures and study the related versality conditions. At the end, we discuss the original question raised by F.Bogomolov: can one embed every compact holomorphic manifold as a C infinity smooth subvariety that is transverse to an algebraic foliation on a complex projective algebraic variety?

Extension of holomorphic functions defined on non reduced analytic subvarieties

The goal of this contribution is to investigate L${}^2$ extension properties for holomorphic sections of vector bundles satisfying weak semi-positivity properties. Using techniques borrowed from recent proofs of the Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension theorem, we obtain several new surjectivity results for the restriction morphism to a non necessarily reduced subvariety, provided the latter is defined as the zero variety of a multiplier ideal sheaf. These extension results come with precise L${}^2$ estimates and (probably) optimal curvature conditions.

On the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles

The goal of this survey is to present various results concerning the cohomology of pseudoeffective line bundles on compact K{ä}hler manifolds, and related properties of their multiplier ideal sheaves. In case the curvature is strictly positive, the prototype is the well known Nadel vanishing theorem, which is itself a generalized analytic version of the fundamental Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem of algebraic geometry. We are interested here in the case where the curvature is merely semipositive in the sense of currents, and the base manifold is not necessarily projective. In this situation, one can still obtain interesting information on cohomology, e.g. a Hard Lefschetz theorem with pseudoeffective coefficients, in the form of a surjectivity statement for the Lefschetz map. More recently, Junyan Cao, in his PhD thesis defended in Grenoble, obtained a general K{ä}hler vanishing theorem that depends on the concept of numerical dimension of a given pseudoeffective line bundle. The proof of these results depends in a crucial way on a general approximation result for closed (1,1)-currents, based on the use of Bergman kernels, and the related intersection theory of currents. Another important ingredient is the recent proof by Guan and Zhou of the strong openness conjecture. As an application, we discuss a structure theorem for compact K{ä}hler threefolds without nontrivial subvarieties, following a joint work with F.Campana and M.Verbitsky. We hope that these notes will serve as a useful guide to the more detailed and more technical papers in the literature; in some cases, we provide here substantially simplified proofs and unifying viewpoints.

Proof of the Kobayashi conjecture on the hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces

The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over ${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all non constant entire curves $f:{\mathbb C}\to X$. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case $X$ satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle $T\_X$. We then use this fact to confirm a long-standing conjecture of Kobayashi (1970), according to which a very general algebraic hypersurface of dimension $n$ and degree at least $2n+2$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^{n+1}$ is hyperbolic.

Towards the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture

The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety X of general type over C, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of X containing all non constant entire curves f : C $\rightarrow$ X. Using the formalism of directed varieties, we prove here that this assertion holds true in case X satisfies a strong general type condition that is related to a certain jet-semistability property of the tangent bundle TX . We then give a sufficient criterion for the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of an arbitrary directed variety (X,V). This work is dedicated to the memory of Professor Salah Baouendi.

A sharp lower bound for the log canonical threshold

In this note, we prove a sharp lower bound for the log canonical threshold of a plurisubharmonic function $φ$ with an isolated singularity at $0$ in an open subset of ${\mathbb C}^n$. This threshold is defined as the supremum of constants $c>0$ such that $e^{-2cφ}$ is integrable on a neighborhood of $0$. We relate $c(φ)$ with the intermediate multiplicity numbers $e_j(φ)$, defined as the Lelong numbers of $(dd^cφ)^j$ at $0$ (so that in particular $e_0(φ)=1$). Our main result is that $c(φ)\ge\sum e_j(φ)/e_{j+1}(φ)$, $0\le j\le n-1$. This inequality is shown to be sharp; it simultaneously improves the classical result $c(φ)\ge 1/e_1(φ)$ due to Skoda, as well as the lower estimate $c(φ)\ge n/e_n(φ)^{1/n}$ which has received crucial applications to birational geometry in recent years. The proof consists in a reduction to the toric case, i.e. singularities arising from monomial ideals.

Compact Kähler 3-manifolds without non-trivial subvarieties

We prove that any compact Kähler 3-dimensional manifold which has no non-trivial complex subvarieties is a torus. This is a very special case of a general conjecture on the structure of 'simple manifolds', central in the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler manifolds. The proof follows from the Brunella pseudo-effectivity theorem, combined with fundamental results of Siu and of the second author on the Lelong numbers of closed positive (1,1)-currents, and with a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles, due to Takegoshi and Demailly-Peternell-Schneider. In a similar vein, we show that a normal compact and Kähler 3-dimensional analytic space with terminal singularities and nef canonical bundle is a cyclic quotient of a simple non-projective torus if it carries no effective divisor. This is a crucial step to complete the bimeromorphic classification of compact Kähler 3-folds

Semi-continuity of complex singularity exponents and Kähler-Einstein metrics on Fano orbifolds

We introduce complex singularity exponents of plurisubharmonic functions and prove a general semi-continuity result for them. This concept contains as a special case several similar concepts which have been considered e.g. by Arnold and Varchenko, mostly for the study of hypersurface singularities. The plurisubharmonic version is somehow based on a reduction to the algebraic case, but it also takes into account more quantitative informations of great interest for complex analysis and complex differential geometry. We give as an application a new derivation of criteria for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics on certain Fano orbifolds, following Nadel's original ideas (but with a drastic simplication in the technique, once the semi-continuity result is taken for granted). In this way, 3 new examples of rigid Kähler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities are obtained.

Hölder continuous solutions to Monge-Ampère equations

Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold. We obtain uniform Hölder regularity for solutions to the complex Monge-Ampère equation on $X$ with $L^p$ right hand side, $p>1$. The same regularity is furthermore proved on the ample locus in any big cohomology class. We also study the range $\MAH(X,ω)$ of the complex Monge-Ampère operator acting on $ω$-plurisubharmonic Hölder continuous functions. We show that this set is convex, by sharpening Kołodziej's result that measures with $L^p$-density belong to $\MAH(X,ω)$ and proving that $\MAH(X,ω)$ has the "$L^p$-property", $p>1$. We also describe accurately the symmetric measures it contains.

A converse to the Andreotti-Grauert theorem

The goal of this paper is to show that there are strong relations between certain Monge-Ampère integrals appearing in holomorphic Morse inequalities, and asymptotic cohomology estimates for tensor powers of holomorphic line bundles. Especially, we prove that these relations hold without restriction for projective surfaces, and in the special case of the volume, i.e. of asymptotic 0-cohomology, for all projective manifolds. These results can be seen as a partial converse to the Andreotti-Grauert vanishing theorem.

Holomorphic Morse inequalities and asymptotic cohomology groups: a tribute to Bernhard Riemann

The goal of this note is to present the potential relationships between certain Monge-Ampère integrals appearing in holomorphic Morse inequalities, and asymptotic cohomology estimates for tensor powers of line bundles, as recently introduced by algebraic geometers. The expected most general statements are still conjectural and owe a debt to Riemann's pioneering work, which led to the concept of Hilbert polynomials and to the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula during the XX-th century.

Holomorphic Morse inequalities and the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture

The goal of this work is to study the existence and properties of non constant entire curves f drawn in a complex irreducible n-dimensional variety X, and more specifically to show that they must satisfy certain global algebraic or differential equations as soon as X is projective of general type. By means of holomorphic Morse inequalities and a probabilistic analysis of the cohomology of jet spaces, we are able to reach a significant step towards a generalized version of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture.

The algebraic dimension of compact complex threefolds with vanishing second Betti number

We investigate compact complex manifolds of dimension three and second Betti number $b_2(X) = 0$. We are interested in the algebraic dimension $a(X)$, which is by definition the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions over the field of complex numbers. The topological Euler characteristic $χ_{\mathrm{ top}}(X) $ equals the third Chern class $c_3(X)$ by a theorem of Hopf. Our main result is that, if $X$ is a compact 3-dimensional complex manifold with $b_2(X) = 0$ and $a(X) > 0$, then $c_3(X) = χ_{\rm top}(X) = 0$, that is, we either have $b_1(X) = 0, \ b_3(X) = 2$ or $b_1(X) = 1, \ b_3(X) = 0.$

$L^2$ vanishing theorems for positive line bundles and adjunction theory, Lecture Notes of a CIME course on "Transcendental Methods of Algebraic Geometry" (Cetraro, Italy, July 1994)

The notes start with an elementary introduction to a few important analytic techniques of algebraic geometry: closed positive currents, $L^2$ estimates for the $\dbar$-operator on positive vector bundles, Nadel's vanishing theorem for multiplier ideal sheaves (a generalization of the well-known Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem). Applications to adjoint line bundles are then discussed. T.~Fujita conjectured in 1987 that $K_X+(n+2)L$ is very ample for every ample line bundle $L$ on a non singular projective variety $X$ with $\dim X=n$. The answer is known only for $n\le 2$ (I.~Reider, 1988). In the last years, various bounds have been obtained for integers $m$ such that $2K_X+mL$ is very ample (by J.~Kollár, L.~Ein-R.~Lazarsfeld, Y.T.~Siu and the author, among others). Two approaches are discussed: an analytic approach via Monge-Ampère equations and current theory, and a more algebraic one (due to Siu) via multiplier ideal sheaves and Riemann-Roch. Finally, an effective version of the big Matsusaka theorem is derived, in the form of an explicit bound for an integer $m$ such that $mL$ is very ample, depending only on $L^n$ and $L^{n-1}\cdot K_X$; these bounds improve Siu's results (1993), and essentially contain the optimal bounds obtained by Fernandez del Busto for the surface case.
