Operator (quasi-)similarity, quasi-Hermitian operators and all that

Motivated by the recent developments of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics, we analyze the structure generated by unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. To that effect, we consider the notions of similarity and quasi-similarity between operators and explore to what extent they preserve spectral properties. Then we study quasi-Hermitian operators, bounded or not, that is, operators that are quasi-similar to their adjoint and we discuss their application in pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics. Finally, we extend the analysis to operators in a partial inner product space (\pip), in particular the scale of Hilbert spaces generated by a single unbounded metric operator.

Metric operators, generalized hermiticity and lattices of Hilbert lpaces

A quasi-Hermitian operator is an operator that is similar to its adjoint in some sense, via a metric operator, i.e., a strictly positive self-adjoint operator. Whereas those metric operators are in general assumed to be bounded, we analyze the structure generated by unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. It turns out that such operators generate a canonical lattice of Hilbert spaces, that is, the simplest case of a partial inner product space (PIP-space). We introduce several generalizations of the notion of similarity between operators, in particular, the notion of quasi-similarity, and we explore to what extend they preserve spectral properties. Then we apply some of the previous results to operators on a particular PIP-space, namely, a scale of Hilbert spaces generated by a metric operator. Finally, motivated by the recent developments of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics, we reformulate the notion of pseudo-Hermitian operators in the preceding formalism.

Operators on Partial Inner Product Spaces: Towards a Spectral Analysis

Given a LHS (Lattice of Hilbert spaces) $V_J$ and a symmetric operator $A$ in $V_J$, in the sense of partial inner product spaces, we define a generalized resolvent for $A$ and study the corresponding spectral properties. In particular, we examine, with help of the KLMN theorem, the question of generalized eigenvalues associated to points of the continuous (Hilbertian) spectrum. We give some examples, including so-called frame multipliers.

Some remarks on quasi-Hermitian operators

A quasi-Hermitian operator is an operator that is similar to its adjoint in some sense, via a metric operator, i.e., a strictly positive self-adjoint operator. Whereas those metric operators are in general assumed to be bounded, we analyze the structure generated by unbounded metric operators in a Hilbert space. Following our previous work, we introduce several generalizations of the notion of similarity between operators. Then we explore systematically the various types of quasi-Hermitian operators, bounded or not. Finally we discuss their application in the so-called pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics.

A spatio-temporal Gaussian-Conical wavelet with high aperture selectivity for motion and speed analysis

The construction of a spatio-temporal wavelet and its tuning to speed was first realized in the 90s on the Morlet wavelet by M. Duval-Destin \cite{Duval-Destin91a,Duval-Destin92}. This enabled to demonstrate the capacities of the speed-tuned Morlet for psychovisual analysis. This construction was also used very efficiently in a powerful aerial target tracking algorithm by Mujica et al.\cite{Mujica99,Mujica2000}. In the last decade, this tool was proposed as an elegant and efficient alternative framework to the Optical Flow (OF), the Block Matching (BM) or the phase difference, for the study of motion estimation in image sequences. Nevertheless, the aperture selectivity of the 2D+T Morlet wavelet presents some difficulties. Here we propose to replace the 2D Morlet wavelet by a Gaussian-Conical (GC) wavelet for the spatial part of the spatio-temporal wavelet, since the GC wavelet has a better aperture selectivity and allows a very simple adjustment of the aperture. Therefore we build a new, highly directional, speed-tuned wavelet called Gaussian-Conical-Morlet (GCM) wavelet. Like the speed-tuned 2D+T Morlet, the new wavelet presents very good characteristics in motion estimation and tracking, namely long temporal dependence, robustness to noise and to occlusions, and supersedes the OF (Optical Flow) and BM (Block Matching) techniques. However, for aperture selectivity, directional speed-capture and spectral recognition and tracking, GCM easily outperforms Morlet. This paper describes the GCM construction, utilization and aperture performances.

Bounded elements in certain topological partial *-algebras

We continue our study of topological partial *algebras, focusing our attention to the interplay between the various partial multiplications. The special case of partial *-algebras of operators is examined first, in particular the link between the strong and the weak multiplications, on one hand, and invariant positive sesquilinear (ips) forms, on the other. Then the analysis is extended to abstract topological partial *algebras, emphasizing the crucial role played by appropriate bounded elements, called $\M$-bounded. Finally, some remarks are made concerning representations in terms of the so-called partial GC*-algebras of operators.

Frames and Semi-Frames

Loosely speaking, a semi-frame is a generalized frame for which one of the frame bounds is absent. More precisely, given a total sequence in a Hilbert space, we speak of an upper (resp. lower) semi-frame if only the upper (resp. lower) frame bound is valid. Equivalently, for an upper semi-frame, the frame operator is bounded, but has an unbounded inverse, whereas a lower semi-frame has an unbounded frame operator, with bounded inverse. We study mostly upper semi-frames, both in the continuous case and in the discrete case, and give some remarks for the dual situation. In particular, we show that reconstruction is still possible in certain cases.

Classification of General Sequences by Frame-Related Operators

This note is a survey and collection of results, as well as presenting some original research. For Bessel sequences and frames, the analysis, synthesis and frame operators as well as the Gram matrix are well-known, bounded operators. We investigate these operators for arbitrary sequences, which in general lead to possibly unbounded operators. We characterize various classes of sequences in terms of these operators and vice-versa. Finally, we classify these sequences by operators applied on orthonormal bases.

Weighted and controlled frames

Weighted and controlled frames have been introduced recently to improve the numerical efficiency of iterative algorithms for inverting the frame operator. In this paper we develop systematically these notions, including their mutual relationship. We will show that controlled frames are equivalent to standard frames and so this concept gives a generalized way to check the frame condition, while offering a numerical advantage in the sense of preconditioning. Next, we investigate weighted frames, in particular their relation to controlled frames. We consider the special case of semi-normalized weights, where the concepts of weighted frames and standard frames are interchangeable. We also make the connection with frame multipliers. Finally we analyze weighted frames numerically. First we investigate three possibilities for finding weights in order to tighten a given frame, i.e., decrease the frame bound ratio. Then we examine Gabor frames and how well the canonical dual of a weighted frame is approximated by the inversely weighted dual frame.
