Iodine molecule modifications with high pressure

Metallization and dissociation are key transformations in diatomic molecules at high densities particularly significant for modeling giant planets. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomistic modeling, we demonstrate that in halogens, the formation of a \textit{connected} molecular structure takes place at pressures well below metallization. Here we show that the iodine diatomic molecule first elongates of $\sim$0.007 Å~up to a critical pressure of $P_c$ $\backsim$7~GPa developing bonds between molecules. Then its length continuously decreases with pressure up to 15-20~GPa. Universal trends in halogens are shown and allow to predict for chlorine a pressure of 42$\pm$8~GPa for molecular bond-length reversal. Our findings tackle the molecule invariability paradigm in diatomic molecular phases at high pressures and may be generalized to other abundant diatomic molecules in the universe, including hydrogen.

Mechanism of pressure induced amorphization of SnI4: a combined X-ray diffraction -- X-ray absorption spectroscopy study

We have studied the amorphization process of SnI4 up to 26.8GPa with unprecedented experimental details by combining Sn and I K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Standards and reverse Monte Carlo extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements confirm that the SnI4 tetrahedron is a fundamental structural unit that is preserved through the crystalline phase-I to crystalline phase-II transition about 7 to 10GPa and then in the amorphous phase that appears above 20GPa. Up to now unexploited Iodine EXAFS reveals to be extremely informative and confirms the formation of iodine iodine short bonds close to 2.85Å in the amorphous phase at 26.8 GPa. A coordination number increase of Sn in the crystalline phase-II appears to be excluded, while the deformation of the tetrahedral units proceeds through a flattening that keeps the average I-Sn-I angle close to 109.5°. Moreover, we put in evidence the impact of pressure on the Sn near edge structure under competing geometrical and electronic effects.

Charge order and suppression of superconductivity in HgBa2CuO4 at high pressures

New insight into the superconducting properties of HgBa2CuO4 (Hg-1201) cuprates is provided by combined measurements of the electrical resistivity and single crystal X-ray diffraction under pressure. The changes induced by increasing pressure up to 20GPa in optimally doped single crystals were investigated. The resistivity measurements as a function of temperature show a metallic behavior up to ~10GPa that gradually passes to an insulating state, typical of charge ordering, that totally suppresses superconductivity above 13GPa. The changes in resistivity are accompanied by the apparition of sharp Bragg peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns indicating that the charge ordering is accompanied by a 3D oxygen ordering appearing at 10GPa of wavevector [0.25, 0, L]. As pressure induces a charge transfer of about 0.02 at 10GPa, our results are the first observation of charge order competing with superconductivity that develops in the over-doped region of the phase diagram of a cuprate.

Stability of Jahn Teller distortion in LaMnO3 under pressure: An x-ray absorption study

The local environment of manganese atoms in LaMnO3 under pressure up to 15.3 GPa has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. For pressures below 8 GPa, no change is detected within the MnO6 octahedra. Above this pressure a continuous reduction of the long Mn-O distance takes place, however the octahedral distortion persists over the whole pressure range. At 15.3 GPa the average Jahn-Teller splitting of the distances is reduced by about one third, indicating that a total removal of the local Jahn-Teller distortion would occur only for pressures around 30 GPa, where metallization is reported to take place. A hysteresis in the long distance reduction is observed down to ambient pressure, suggesting the coexistence of MnO6 distorted and undistorted units.

Probing the gamma-alpha Transition in Bulk Ce under Pressure: A Direct Investigation by Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report on the most complete investigation to date of the 4f-electron properties at the gamma-alpha transition in elemental Ce by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The Ce 2p3d-RIXS spectra were measured directly in the bulk material as a function of pressure through the transition. The spectra were simulated within the Anderson impurity model. The occupation number nf was derived from the calculations in both gamma- and alpha-phases in the ground state along with the f doubleoccupancy. We find that the electronic structure changes result mainly from band formation of 4f electrons which concurs with reduced electron correlation and increased Kondo screening at high pressure.
