The dynamics of front propagation in nonlocal reaction-diffusion equations

The question addressed here is the long time evolution of the solutions to a class of one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations, in which the diffusion is given by an integral operator. The underlying motivation, discussed in the first chapter, is the mathematical analysis of models for biological invasions. The model under study, while simple looking, is of current use in real life situations. Interestingly, it arises in totally different contexts, such as the study of branching random walks in probability theory. While the model under study has attracted a lot of attention, and while many partial results about the time asymptotic behaviour of its solutions have been proved over the last decades, some basic questions on the sharp asymptotics have remained unanswered. One ambition of this monograph is to close these gaps and to provide a complete and unified treatment of the equation. In some of the situations that we envisage, the level sets organise themselves into an invasion front that is asymptotically linear in time, up to a correction that converges exponentially in time to a constant. In other situations, that constitute the main and newest part of the work, the correction is asymptotically logarithmic in time. Despite these apparent different behaviours, there is an underlying common way of thinking in the study of all these situations. The ideas presented in the book apply to more elaborate systems modelling biological invasions or the spatial propagation of epidemics. The models themselves may be multidimensional, but they all have in common a mechanism imposing the propagation in a given direction; examples are presented the problems that conclude each chapter. These ideas should also be useful in the treatment of further models that we are not able envisage at the time being.

Asymptotic stability for diffusion with dynamic boundary reaction from Ginzburg-Landau energy

The nonequilibrium process in dislocation dynamics and its relaxation to the metastable transition profile is crucial for understanding the plastic deformation caused by line defects in materials. In this paper, we consider the full dynamics of a scalar dislocation model in two dimensions described by the bulk diffusion equation coupled with dynamic boundary condition on the interface, where a nonconvex misfit potential, due to the presence of dislocation, yields an interfacial reaction term on the interface. We prove the dynamic solution to this bulk-interface coupled system will uniformly converge to the metastable transition profile, which has a bi-states with fat-tail decay rate at the far fields. This global stability for the metastable pattern is the first result for a bulk-interface coupled dynamics driven only by an interfacial reaction on the slip plane.

Sharp large time behaviour in $N$-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations of bistable type

We study the large time behaviour of the reaction-diffsuion equation $\partial_t u=Δu +f(u)$ in spatial dimension $N$, when the nonlinear term is bistable and the initial datum is compactly supported. We prove the existence of a Lipschitz function $s^\infty$ of the unit sphere, such that $u(t,x)$ converges uniformly in $\mathbb{R}^N$, as $t$ goes to infinity, to $U_{c_*}\bigg(|x|-c_*t + \frac{N-1}{c_*} \mathrm{ln}t + s^\infty\Big(\frac{x}{|x|}\Big)\bigg)$, where $U_{c*}$ is the unique 1D travelling profile. This extends earlier results that identified the locations of the level sets of the solutions with $o_{t\to+\infty}(t)$ precision, or identified precisely the level sets locations for almost radial initial data.

Properties of steady states for a class of non-local Fisher-KPP equations in disconnected domains

The question studied here is the existence and uniqueness of a non-trivial bounded steady state of a Fisher-KPP equation involving a fractional Laplacian (--$Δ$)^$α$ in a domain with Dirichlet conditions outside of the domain. More specifically, we investigate such questions in the case of general fragmented unbounded domains. Indeed, we take advantage of the non-local dispersion in order to provide analytic bounds (which depend only on the domain) on the steady states. Such results are relevant in biology. For instance, our results provide criteria on the domain for the subsistence of a species subject to a non-local diffusion in a fragmented area. These criteria primarily involve the sign of the first eigenvalue of the operator (--$Δ$)^$α$ -- Id in a domain with Dirichlet conditions outside of the domain. To this end, we exhibit a result of continuity of this principal eigenvalue with respect to the distance between two compact patchs in the one dimensional case. The main novelty of this last result is the continuity up to the distance 0.

The shape of a free boundary driven by a line of fast diffusion

We complete the description, initiated in [6], of a free boundary travelling at constant speed in a half plane, where the propagation is controlled by a line having a large diffusion on its own. The main result of this work is that the free boundary is asymptotic to a line at infinity, whose angle to the horizontal is dicatated by the velocity of the wave imposed by the line. This helps understanding some rather counter-intuitive numerical simulations of [8].

Convergence to a single wave in the Fisher-KPP equation

We study the large time asymptotics of a solution of the Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, with an initial condition that is a compact perturbation of a step function. A well-known result of Bramson states that, in the reference frame moving as $2t - ({3}/{2}) \log t +x_\infty$, the solution of the equation converges as $t\to+\infty$ to a translate of the traveling wave corresponding to the minimal speed~$c_*=2$. The constant $x_\infty$ depends on the initial condition $u(0,x)$. The proof is elaborate, and based on probabilistic arguments. The purpose of this paper is to provide a simple proof based on PDE arguments.

Front propagation directed by a line of fast diffusion: large diffusion and large time asymptotics

The system under study is a reaction-diffusion equation in a horizontal strip, coupled to a diffusion equation on its upper boundary via an exchange condition of the Robin type. This class of models was introduced by H. Berestycki, L. Rossi and the second author in order to model biological invasions directed by lines of fast diffusion. They proved, in particular, that the speed of invasion was enhanced by a fast diffusion on the line, the spreading velocity being asymptotically proportional to the square root of the fast diffusion coefficient. These results could be reduced, in the logistic case, to explicit algebraic computations. The goal of this paper is to prove that the same phenomenon holds, with a different type of nonlinearity, which precludes explicit computations. We discover a new transition phenomenon, that we explain in detail.

A class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations with constraint: uniqueness and constructive approach

We discuss a class of time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equations, where an unknown function of time is intended to keep the maximum of the solution to the constant value 0. Our main result is that the full problem has a unique viscosity solution, which is in fact classical. The motivation is a selection-mutation model which, in the limit of small diffusion, exhibits concentration on the zero level set of the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Uniqueness is obtained by noticing that, as a consequence of the dynamic programming principle, the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is classical. It is then possible to write an ODE for the maximum of the solution, and treat the full problem as a nonstandard Cauchy problem.

Gradient estimates and symmetrization for Fisher-KPP front propagation with fractional diffusion

In this paper, we study gradient decay estimates for solutions to the multi-dimensional Fisher-KPP equation with fractional diffusion. It is known that this equation exhibits exponentially advancing level sets with strong qualitative upper and lower bounds on the solution. However, little has been shown concerning the gradient of the solution. We prove that, under mild conditions on the initial data, the first and second derivatives of the solution obey a comparative exponential decay in time. We then use this estimate to prove a symmetrization result, which shows that the reaction front flattens and quantifiably circularizes, losing its initial structure.

The effect of a line with non-local diffusion on Fisher-KPP propagation

We propose here a new model of accelerating fronts, consisting of one equation with non-local diffusion on a line, coupled via the boundary condition with a reaction-diffusion equation in the upper half-plane. The underlying biological question is to understand how transportation networks may enhance biological invasions. We show that the line accelerates the propagation in the direction of the line and enhances the overall propagation in the plane and that the propagation is directed by diffusion on the line, where it is exponentially fast in time. We also describe completely the invasion in the upper half-plane. This work is a non-local version of the model introduced in [Berestycki-Roquejoffre-Rossi 2013], where the line had a strong but local diffusion described by the classical Laplace operator.

The shape of expansion induced by a line with fast diffusion in Fisher-KPP equations

We establish a new property of Fisher-KPP type propagation in a plane, in the presence of a line with fast diffusion. We prove that the line enhances the asymptotic speed of propagation in a cone of directions. Past the critical angle given by this cone, the asymptotic speed of propagation coincides with the classical Fisher-KPP invasion speed. Several qualitative properties are further derived, such as the limiting behaviour when the diffusion on the line goes to infinity.

Uniqueness in a class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations with constraints

In this note, we discuss a class of time-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi equations depending on a function of time, this function being chosen in order to keep the maximum of the solution to the constant value 0. The main result of the note is that the full problem has a unique classical solution. The motivation is a selection-mutation model which, in the limit of small diffusion, exhibits concentration on the zero level set of the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The uniqueness result that we prove implies strong convergence and error estimates for the selection-mutation model.

Fisher-KPP propagation in the presence of a line: further effects

This paper is a continuation of [2] where a new model of biological invasions in the plane directed by a line was introduced. Here we include new features such as transport and reaction terms on the line. Their interaction with the pure diffusivity in the plane is quantified in terms of enhancement of the propagation speed. We establish conditions that determine whether the spreading speed exceeds the standard Fisher KPP invasion speed. These conditions involve the ratio of the diffusivities on the line and in the field, the transport term and the reactions. We derive the asymptotic behaviour for large diffusions or large transports. We also discuss the biological interpretation of these findings.

Propagation in Fisher-KPP type equations with fractional diffusion in periodic media

We are interested in the time asymptotic location of the level sets of solutions to Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equations with fractional diffusion in periodic media. We show that the speed of propagation is exponential in time, with a precise exponent depending on a periodic principal eigenvalue, and that it does not depend on the space direction. This is in contrast with the Freidlin-Gärtner formula for the standard Laplacian.

The influence of a line with fast diffusion on Fisher-KPP propagation

We propose here a new model to describe biological invasions in the plane when a strong diffusion takes place on a line. We establish the main properties of the system, and also derive the asymptotic speed of spreading in the direction of the line. For low diffusion, the line has no effect, whereas, past a threshold, the line enhances global diffusion in the plane and the propagation is directed by diffusion on the line. It is shown here that the global asymptotic speed of spreading in the plane, in the direction of the line, grows as the square root of the diffusion on the line. The model is much relevant to account for the effects of fast diffusion lines such as roads on spreading of invasive species.

The influence of fractional diffusion in Fisher-KPP equations

We study the Fisher-KPP equation where the Laplacian is replaced by the generator of a Feller semigroup with power decaying kernel, an important example being the fractional Laplacian. In contrast with the case of the stan- dard Laplacian where the stable state invades the unstable one at constant speed, we prove that with fractional diffusion, generated for instance by a stable Lévy process, the front position is exponential in time. Our results provide a mathe- matically rigorous justification of numerous heuristics about this model.

Traveling Wave Solutions of Advection-Diffusion Equations with Nonlinear Diffusion

We study the existence of particular traveling wave solutions of a nonlinear parabolic degenerate diffusion equation with a shear flow. Under some assumptions we prove that such solutions exist at least for propagation speeds c {\in}]c*, +{\infty}, where c* > 0 is explicitly computed but may not be optimal. We also prove that a free boundary hy- persurface separates a region where u = 0 and a region where u > 0, and that this free boundary can be globally parametrized as a Lipschitz continuous graph under some additional non-degeneracy hypothesis; we investigate solutions which are, in the region u > 0, planar and linear at infinity in the propagation direction, with slope equal to the propagation speed.

Transition between linear and exponential propagation in Fisher-KPP type reaction-diffusion equations

We study the Fisher-KPP equation with a fractional laplacian of order α \in (0, 1). We know that the stable state invades the unstable one at constant speed for α = 1, and at an exponential in time velocity for α \in (0, 1). The transition between these two different speeds is examined in this paper. We prove that during a time of the order - ln(1 - α), the propagation is linear and then it is exponential.

Travelling graphs for the forced mean curvature motion in an arbitrary space dimension

We construct travelling wave graphs of the form $z=-ct+ϕ(x)$, $ϕ: x \in \mathbb{R}^{N-1} \mapsto ϕ(x)\in \mathbb{R}$, $N \geq 2$, solutions to the $N$-dimensional forced mean curvature motion $V_n=-c_0+κ$ ($c\geq c_0$) with prescribed asymptotics. For any 1-homogeneous function $ϕ_{\infty}$, viscosity solution to the eikonal equation $|Dϕ_{\infty}|=\sqrt{(c/c_0)^2-1}$, we exhibit a smooth concave solution to the forced mean curvature motion whose asymptotics is driven by $ϕ_{\infty}$. We also describe $ϕ_{\infty}$ in terms of a probability measure on $\mathbb{S}^{N-2}$.

Existence and Non-existence of Fisher-KPP Transition Fronts

We consider Fisher-KPP-type reaction-diffusion equations with spatially inhomogeneous reaction rates. We show that a sufficiently strong localized inhomogeneity may prevent existence of transition-front-type global in time solutions while creating a global in time bump-like solution. This is the first example of a medium in which no reaction-diffusion transition front exists. A weaker localized inhomogeneity leads to existence of transition fronts but only in a finite range of speeds. These results are in contrast with both Fisher-KPP reactions in homogeneous media as well as ignition-type reactions in inhomogeneous media.
