Three-generation baryon and lepton number violation at the LHC

One of the most puzzling questions in particle physics concerns the status of the baryon (B) and lepton (L) quantum numbers. On the theoretical side, most new physics scenarios naturally lead to their non-conservation and some amount of violation is actually needed to explain the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. On the experimental side, low-energy constraints such as those on proton decay are so stringent that it is generally believed that no B and L violation will ever be seen in laboratories. We observe that this apparent contradiction, however, disappears when the flavor symmetries involving all three generations are taken into account. We then identify model-independent classes of B and/or L violating six-fermion-based processes that indeed simultaneously satisfy low-energy constraints and produce clearly identifiable signals at the LHC. Finally, through simplified models, we study two classes characterized by (ΔB;ΔL) = (\pm 1;\pm 3) and (\pm 2; 0), that lead to particularly striking signatures (t μ^+ e^+ and \bar t \bar t + jets, respectively).

Closing in on a perturbative fourth generation

A perturbative new family of fermions is now severely constrained, though not excluded yet. We reconsider the current bounds (i.e., direct and from Higgs searches, R_b, oblique parameters) on the fourth generation parameter space assuming the case of a small CKM mixing with the third generation. We identify viable scenarios featuring either a light or a heavy Higgs boson. A set of representative benchmark points targeted for LHC searches is proposed with a normal (inverted) quark mass hierarchy where t' -> b'W (b' -> tW) decays are sizable. In the case where the fourth generation couplings to the lighter quark families are small, we suggest that search strategies at the LHC should include both pair (strong) and single (weak) production with bb+nW (n=2,...,6) final state signatures.

Minimal violation of flavour and custodial symmetries in a vectophobic Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model

Tree-level accidental symmetries are known to play a fundamental role in the phenomenology of the Standard Model (SM) for electroweak interactions. So far, no significant deviations from the theory have been observed in precision, flavour and collider physics. Consequently, these global symmetries are expected to remain quite efficient in any attempt beyond the SM. Yet, they do not forbid rather unorthodox phenomena within the reach of current LHC experiments. This is illustrated with a vectophobic Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model (2HDM) where effects of a light, flavour-violating and custodian (pseudo)scalar might be observed in the $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ decay rate and in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum at around 125 GeV.

Non-resonant New Physics in Top Pair Production at Hadron Colliders

We use top quark pair production as a probe of top-philic non-resonant new physics. Following a low energy effective field theory approach, we calculate several key observables in top quark pair production at hadron colliders (e.g., total cross section, ttbar invariant mass distribution, forward-backward asymmetry, spin correlations) including the interference of the Standard Model with dimension-six operators. We determine the LHC reach in probing new physics after having taken into account the Tevatron constraints. In particular, we show that the gluon fusion process gg -> ttbar which remains largely unconstrained at the Tevatron is affected by only one top-philic dimension-six operator, the chromo-magnetic moment of the top quark. This operator can be further constrained by the LHC data as soon as a precision of about 20% is reached for the total ttbar cross-section. While our approach is general and model-independent, it is particularly relevant to models of Higgs and top compositeness, which we consider in detail, also in connection with ttbar ttbar and ttbar bbbar production.

What is the (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp Telling Us ?

Nature might be kinder than previously thought as far as epsilon'/epsilon is concerned. We show that the recently obtained experimental value for epsilon'/epsilon does not require sizeable 1/N and isospin-breaking corrections. We propose to display the theoretical results for epsilon'/epsilon in a (P^{1/2}, P^{3/2}) plane in which the experimental result is represented by a (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp-path. This should allow to exhibit transparently the role of 1/N and isospin-breaking corrections in different calculations of epsilon'/epsilon. From now on theorists are allowed to walk only along this (epsilon'/epsilon)_exp-path.
