Optimization of gridshell bar orientation using a simplified genetic approach

Gridshells are defined as structures that have the shape and rigidity of a double curvature shell but consist of a grid instead of a continuous surface. This study concerns those obtained by elastic deformation of an initially flat two-way grid. This paper presents a novel approach to generate gridshells on an imposed shape under imposed boundary conditions. A numerical tool based on a geometrical method, the compass method, is developed. It is coupled with genetic algorithms to optimize the orientation of gridshell bars in order to minimize the stresses and therefore to avoid bar breakage during the construction phase. Examples of application are shown.

Improved Particle Identification Using Cluster Counting in a Full-Length Drift Chamber Prototype

Single-cell prototype drift chambers were built at TRIUMF and tested with a $\sim\unit[210]{MeV/c}$ beam of positrons, muons, and pions. A cluster-counting technique is implemented which improves the ability to distinguish muons and pions when combined with a traditional truncated-mean charge measurement. Several cluster-counting algorithms and equipment variations are tested, all showing significant improvement when combined with the traditional method. The results show that cluster counting is a feasible option for any particle physics experiment using drift chambers for particle identification. The technique does not require electronics with an overly high sampling rate. Optimal results are found with a signal smoothing time of $\sim\unit[5]{ns}$ corresponding to a $\sim\unit[100]{MHz}$ Nyquist frequency.

Bremsstrahlung emission from quark stars

We calculate numerically the emissivity and surface flux of electron-electron bremsstrahlung radiation from the surface of a bare quark star. The restricted electronic phase space due to the presence of an effective photon mass results in a strong suppression. The emissivity and surface flux are found to be substantially smaller than those found in previous work, to the point where electron-positron pair production would remain the dominant mechanism at all temperatures in the relativistic regime. As a consequence, pair production remains a dominant process even at low surface temperatures as originally suggested by Usov in arXiv:astro-ph/9712304.
