Algebraic structures in $κ$-Poincaré invariant gauge theories

$κ$-Poincaré invariant gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski space-time, which are noncommutative analogs of the usual $U(1)$ gauge theory, exist only in five dimensions. These are built from noncommutative twisted connections on a hermitian right module over the algebra coding the $κ$-Minkowski space-time. We show that twisting the action of this algebra on the hermitian module, assumed to be a copy of it, affects neither the value of the above dimension nor the noncommutative gauge group defined as the unitary automorphisms of the module leaving the hermitian structure unchanged. Only the hermiticity condition obeyed by the gauge potential becomes twisted. Similarities between the present framework and algebraic features of twisted spectral triples are exhibited.

Quantum instability of gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski space

We consider a gauge theory on the 5-d $κ$-Minkowski which can be viewed as the noncommutative analog of a $U(1)$ gauge theory. We show that the Hermiticity condition obeyed by the gauge potential $A_μ$ is necessarily twisted. Performing a BRST gauge-fixing with a Lorentz-type gauge, we carry out a first exploration of the one loop quantum properties of this gauge theory. We find that the gauge-fixed theory gives rise to a non-vanishing tadpole for the time component of the gauge potential, while there is no non-vanishing tadpole 1-point function for the spatial components of $A_μ$. This signals that the classical vacuum of the theory is not stable against quantum fluctuations. Possible consequences regarding the symmetries of the gauge model and the fate of the tadpole in other gauges of non-covariant type are discussed.

Gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski spaces: Twist and modular operators

We discuss the construction of $κ$-Poincaré invariant actions for gauge theories on $κ$-Minkowski spaces. We consider various classes of untwisted and (bi)twisted differential calculi. Starting from a natural class of noncommutative differential calculi based on a particular type of twisted derivations belonging to the algebra of deformed translations, combined with a twisted extension of the notion of connection, we prove an algebraic relation between the various twists and the classical dimension d of the $κ$-Minkowski space(-time) ensuring the gauge invariance of the candidate actions for gauge theories. We show that within a natural differential calculus based on a distinguished set of twisted derivations, d=5 is the unique value for the classical dimension at which the gauge action supports both the gauge invariance and the $κ$-Poincaré invariance. Within standard (untwisted) differential calculi, we show that the full gauge invariance cannot be achieved, although an invariance under a group of transformations constrained by the modular (Tomita) operator stemming from the $κ$-Poincaré invariance still holds.

Closed star product on noncommutative $\mathbb{R}^3$ and scalar field dynamics

We consider the noncommutative space $\mathbb{R}^3_θ$, a deformation of $\mathbb{R}^3$ for which the star product is closed for the trace functional. We study one-loop IR and UV properties of the 2-point function for real and complex noncommutative scalar field theories with quartic interactions and Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^3$ as kinetic operator. We find that the 2-point functions for these noncommutative scalar field theories have no IR singularities in the external momenta, indicating the absence of UV/IR mixing. We also find that the 2-point functions are UV finite with the deformation parameter $θ$ playing the role of a natural UV cut-off. The possible origin of the absence of UV/IR mixing in noncommutative scalar field theories on $\mathbb{R}^3_θ$ as well as on $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$, another deformation of $\mathbb{R}^3$, is discussed.

Exact Partition Functions for Gauge Theories on $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$

The noncommutative space $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$, a deformation of $\mathbb{R}^3$, supports a $3$-parameter family of gauge theory models with gauge-invariant harmonic term, stable vacuum and which are perturbatively finite to all orders. Properties of this family are discussed. The partition function factorizes as an infinite product of reduced partition functions, each one corresponding to the reduced gauge theory on one of the fuzzy spheres entering the decomposition of $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$. For a particular sub-family of gauge theories, each reduced partition function is exactly expressible as a ratio of determinants. A relation with integrable 2-D Toda lattice hierarchy is indicated.

Metrics and causality on Moyal planes

Metrics structures stemming from the Connes distance promote Moyal planes to the status of quantum metric spaces. We discuss this aspect in the light of recent developments, emphasizing the role of Moyal planes as representative examples of a recently introduced notion of quantum (noncommutative) locally compact space. We move then to the framework of Lorentzian noncommutative geometry and we examine the possibility of defining a notion of causality on Moyal plane, which is somewhat controversial in the area of mathematical physics. We show the actual existence of causal relations between the elements of a particular class of pure (coherent) states on Moyal plane with related causal structure similar to the one of the usual Minkowski space, up to the notion of locality.

Noncommutative gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$: Perturbatively finite models

We show that natural noncommutative gauge theory models on $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$ can accommodate gauge invariant harmonic terms, thanks to the existence of a relationship between the center of $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$ and the components of the gauge invariant 1-form canonical connection. This latter object shows up naturally within the present noncommutative differential calculus. Restricting ourselves to positive actions with covariant coordinates as field variables, a suitable gauge-fixing leads to a family of matrix models with quartic interactions and kinetic operators with compact resolvent. Their perturbative behavior is then studied. We first compute the 2-point and 4-point functions at the one-loop order within a subfamily of these matrix models for which the interactions have a symmetric form. We find that the corresponding contributions are finite. We then extend this result to arbitrary order. We find that the amplitudes of the ribbon diagrams for the models of this subfamily are finite to all orders in perturbation. This result extends finally to any of the models of the whole family of matrix models obtained from the above gauge-fixing. The origin of this result is discussed. Finally, the existence of a particular model related to integrable hierarchies is indicated, for which the partition function is expressible as a product of ratios of determinants.

Spectral theorem in noncommutative field theories: Jacobi dynamics

Jacobi operators appear as kinetic operators of several classes of noncommutative field theories (NCFT) considered recently. This paper deals with the case of bounded Jacobi operators. A set of tools mainly issued from operator and spectral theory is given in a way applicable to the study of NCFT. As an illustration, this is applied to a gauge-fixed version of the induced gauge theory on the Moyal plane expanded around a symmetric vacuum. The characterization of the spectrum of the kinetic operator is given, showing a behavior somewhat similar to a massless theory. An attempt to characterize the noncommutative geometry related to the gauge fixed action is presented. Using a Dirac operator obtained from the kinetic operator, it is shown that one can construct an even, regular, weakly real spectral triple. This spectral triple does not define a noncommutative metric space for the Connes spectral distance.

Quantum gauge theories on noncommutative 3-d space

We consider a class of gauge invariant models on the noncommutative space $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$, a deformation of $\mathbb{R}^3$. Focusing on massless models with no linear $A_i$ dependence, we obtain noncommutative gauge models for which the computation of the propagator can be done in a convenient gauge. We find that the infrared singularity of the massless propagator disappears in the computation of the correlation functions. We show that massless gauge invariant models on $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$ have quantum instabilities of the vacuum, signaled by the occurrence of non vanishing 1-point functions for some but not all of the components of the gauge potential. The tadpole contribution to the effective action cannot be interpreted as a standard $σ$-term. Its global symmetry does not fit with the one of the classical action, reminiscent to an explicit global symmetry breaking term.

Noncommutative field theories on $R^3_λ$: Towards UV/IR mixing freedom

We consider the noncommutative space $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$, a deformation of the algebra of functions on $\mathbb{R}^3$ which yields a "foliation" of $\mathbb{R}^3$ into fuzzy spheres. We first construct a natural matrix base adapted to $\mathbb{R}^3_λ$. We then apply this general framework to the one-loop study of a two-parameter family of real-valued scalar noncommutative field theories with quartic polynomial interaction, which becomes a non-local matrix model when expressed in the above matrix base. The kinetic operator involves a part related to dynamics on the fuzzy sphere supplemented by a term reproducing radial dynamics. We then compute the planar and non-planar 1-loop contributions to the 2-point correlation function. We find that these diagrams are both finite in the matrix base. We find no singularity of IR type, which signals very likely the absence of UV/IR mixing. We also consider the case of a kinetic operator with only the radial part. We find that the resulting theory is finite to all orders in perturbation expansion.

Noncommutative gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^2_θ$ as matrix models

We study a class of noncommutative gauge theory models on 2-dimensional Moyal space from the viewpoint of matrix models and explore some related properties. Expanding the action around symmetric vacua generates non local matrix models with polynomial interaction terms. For a particular vacuum, we can invert the kinetic operator which is related to a Jacobi operator. The resulting propagator can be expressed in terms of Chebyschev polynomials of second kind. We show that non vanishing correlations exist at large separations. General considerations on the kinetic operators stemming from the other class of symmetric vacua, indicates that only one class of symmetric vacua should lead to fast decaying propagators. The quantum stability of the vacuum is briefly discussed.

Slavnov-Taylor identities, non-commutative gauge theories and infrared divergences

In this work we clarify some properties of the one-loop IR divergences in non-Abelian gauge field theories on non-commutative 4-dimensional Moyal space. Additionally, we derive the tree-level Slavnov-Taylor identities relating the two, three and four point functions, and verify their consistency with the divergent one-loop level results. We also discuss the special case of two dimensions.

Connes distance by examples: Homothetic spectral metric spaces

We study metric properties stemming from the Connes spectral distance on three types of non compact noncommutative spaces which have received attention recently from various viewpoints in the physics literature. These are the noncommutative Moyal plane, a family of harmonic Moyal spectral triples for which the Dirac operator squares to the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian and a family of spectral triples with Dirac operator related to the Landau operator. We show that these triples are homothetic spectral metric spaces, having an infinite number of distinct pathwise connected components. The homothetic factors linking the distances are related to determinants of effective Clifford metrics. We obtain as a by product new examples of explicit spectral distance formulas. The results are discussed.

Symmetries of noncommutative scalar field theory

We investigate symmetries of the scalar field theory with harmonic term on the Moyal space with euclidean scalar product and general symplectic form. The classical action is invariant under the orthogonal group if this group acts also on the symplectic structure. We find that the invariance under the orthogonal group can be restored also at the quantum level by restricting the symplectic structures to a particular orbit.

The spectral distance on the Moyal plane

We study the noncommutative geometry of the Moyal plane from a metric point of view. Starting from a non compact spectral triple based on the Moyal deformation A of the algebra of Schwartz functions on R^2, we explicitly compute Connes' spectral distance between the pure states of A corresponding to eigenfunctions of the quantum harmonic oscillator. For other pure states, we provide a lower bound to the spectral distance, and show that the latest is not always finite. As a consequence, we show that the spectral triple [20] is not a spectral metric space in the sense of [5]. This motivates the study of truncations of the spectral triple, based on M_n(C) with arbitrary integer n, which turn out to be compact quantum metric spaces in the sense of Rieffel. Finally the distance is explicitly computed for n=2.

A Remark on the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Mechanism in the Standard Model

In this paper we consider the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Mechanism (SSBM) in the Standard Model of particles in the unitary gauge. We show that the computation usually presented of this mechanism can be conveniently performed in a slightly different manner. As an outcome, the computation we present can change the interpretation of the SSBM in the Standard Model, in that it decouples the SU(2)-gauge symmetry in the final Lagrangian instead of breaking it.

Noncommutative epsilon-graded connections

We introduce the new notion of epsilon-graded associative algebras which takes its root into the notion of commutation factors introduced in the context of Lie algebras. We define and study the associated notion of epsilon-derivation-based differential calculus, which generalizes the derivation-based differential calculus on associative algebras. A corresponding notion of noncommutative connection is also defined. We illustrate these considerations with various examples of epsilon-graded algebras, in particular some graded matrix algebras and the Moyal algebra. This last example permits also to interpret mathematically a noncommutative gauge field theory.

Spectral Distances: Results for Moyal Plane and Noncommutative Torus

The spectral distance for noncommutative Moyal planes is considered in the framework of a non compact spectral triple recently proposed as a possible noncommutative analog of non compact Riemannian spin manifold. An explicit formula for the distance between any two elements of a particular class of pure states can be determined. The corresponding result is discussed. The existence of some pure states at infinite distance signals that the topology of the spectral distance on the space of states is not the weak * topology. The case of the noncommutative torus is also considered and a formula for the spectral distance between some states is also obtained.

Noncommutative Yang-Mills-Higgs actions from derivation-based differential calculus

Derivations of a noncommutative algebra can be used to construct differential calculi, the so-called derivation-based differential calculi. We apply this framework to a version of the Moyal algebra ${\cal{M}}$. We show that the differential calculus, generated by the maximal subalgebra of the derivation algebra of ${\cal{M}}$ that can be related to infinitesimal symplectomorphisms, gives rise to a natural construction of Yang-Mills-Higgs models on ${\cal{M}}$ and a natural interpretation of the covariant coordinates as Higgs fields. We also compare in detail the main mathematical properties characterizing the present situation to those specific of two other noncommutative geometries, namely the finite dimensional matrix algebra $M_n({\mathbb{C}})$ and the algebra of matrix valued functions $C^\infty(M)\otimes M_n({\mathbb{C}})$. The UV/IR mixing problem of the resulting Yang-Mills-Higgs models is also discussed.

Global quantum Hall phase diagram from visibility diagrams

We propose a construction of a global phase diagram for the quantum Hall effect. This global phase diagram is based on our previous constructions of visibility diagrams in the context of the Quantum Hall Effect. The topology of the phase diagram we obtain is in good agreement with experimental observations (when the spin effect can be neglected). This phase diagram does not show floating.
