Scattering properties of the $2e^-2e^+$ polyelectronic system

We study the $2e^-2e^+$ equal-mass charge-neutral four-body system in the adiabatic hyperspherical framework. The lowest few adiabatic potentials are calculated for zero orbital angular momentum, positive parity, and charge conjugation symmetries. Propagating the R-matrix, the low-energy $s$-wave scattering lengths of the singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet spin configurations are calculated. Lastly, we calculate the S-matrix for energies above the ionic threshold to estimate the transition rates between the single ionic fragmentation channel and the lowest few dimer-dimer fragmentation channels.

Few-body ultracold reactions in a Bose-Fermi mixture

The spectrum of two bosons and two fermions in a trap is calculated using a correlated-Gaussian basis throughout the range of a broad Fano-Feshbach resonance. The calculations provide a few-body solution to the magneto-association of fermionic Feshbach molecules. This solution is used to study the time evolution of the system as the scattering length changes, mimicking experiments with Bose-Fermi mixtures near Fano-Feshbach resonances. The structure of avoided crossings in the few-body spectrum enables an interpretation of the dynamics of the system as a sequence of Landau-Zener transitions. The calculated molecule formation rate is compared with experimental observations.

First order phase transitions in optical lattices with tunable three-body onsite interaction

We study the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of a three-body interaction term, both at a mean field level and via quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The three-body term is tuned by coupling the triply occupied states to a trapped universal trimer. We find that, for sufficiently attractive three-body interaction the n = 2 Mott lobe disappears and the system displays first order phase transitions separating the n = 1 from the n = 3 lobes, and the n = 1 and n = 3 Mott insulator from the superfluid. We have also analyzed the effect of finite temperature and found that transitions are still of first order at temperatures T\simJ where J is the hopping matrix element.

Efimov physics in heteronuclear four-body systems

We study three- and four-body Efimov physics in a heteronuclear atomic system with three identical heavy bosonic atoms and one light atom. We show that exchange of the light atom between the heavy atoms leads to both three- and four-body features in the low-energy inelastic rate constants that trace to the Efimov effect. Further, the effective interaction generated by this exchange can provide an additional mechanism for control in ultracold experiments. Finally, we find that there is no true four-body Efimov effect - that is, no infinite number of four-body states in the absence of two- and three-body bound states - resolving a decades-long controversy.

Lattice Induced Resonances in One Dimensional Bosonic Systems

We study the resonant effects produced when a Feshbach dimer crosses a scattering continuum band of atoms in an optical lattice. We numerically obtain the exact spectrum of two particles in a one-dimensional lattice and develop an effective atom-dimer Hamiltonian that accurately captures resonant effects. The lattice-induced resonances lead to the formation of bound states simultaneously above and below the scattering continuum and significantly modify the curvature of the dimer dispersion relation. The nature of the atom-dimer coupling depends strongly on the parity of the dimer state leading to a novel coupling in the case of negative parity dimers. From the exact solutions we extract the dimer Wannier function from which we quantitatively determine the effective Hamiltonian parameters for a many-body description.

Universal Five- and Six-Body Droplets Tied to an Efimov Trimer

We explore the properties of weakly bound bosonic states in the strongly interacting regime. Combining a correlated-Gaussian (CG) basis set expansion with a complex scaling method, we extract the energies and structural properties of bosonic cluster states with $N\le6$ for different two-body potentials. The identification of five- and six-body resonances attached to an excited Efimov trimer provides strong support to the premise of Efimov universality in bosonic systems. Our study also reveals a rich structure of bosonic cluster states. Besides the lowest cluster states which behave as bosonic droplets, we identify cluster states weakly bound to one or two atoms forming effective cluster-atom "dimers" and cluster-atom-atom "trimers." The experimental signatures of these cluster states are discussed.

Weakly Bound Cluster States of Efimov Character

We study the behavior of weakly bound clusters and their relation to the well-known three-body Efimov states. We adopt a model to describe universal behavior of strongly interacting bosonic systems, and we test its validity by reproducing predictions of three- and four-body universal states. Then, we extend our study to larger systems and identify a series of universal cluster states that can be qualitatively interpreted as adding one particle at a time to an Efimov trimer. The properties of these cluster states and their experimental signatures are discussed.

Correlated Gaussian Hyperspherical Method for Few-Body Systems

We develop an innovative numerical technique to describe few-body systems. Correlated Gaussian basis functions are used to expand the channel functions in the hyperspherical representation. The method is proven to be robust and efficient compared to other numerical techniques. The method is applied to few-body systems with short range interactions, including several examples for three- and four-body systems. Specifically, for the two-component, four-fermion system, we extract the coefficients that characterize its behavior at unitarity.

Renormalized mean-field theory for a two-component Fermi gas with s-wave interactions

A method is introduced to renormalize the zero-range interaction for use in mean-field and many-body theory, starting from two-body calculations. The density-renormalized delta-function interaction is then applied using mean-field theory to a two-component fermion gas, and compared with diffusion Monte Carlo simulations and conventional mean-field calculations. In the unitarity limit, the equation of state exhibits the expected behavior $μ\proptoρ^{2/3}$, with a parameter $β= -0.492$, which is consistent with recent experiments \cite{partridge2006pap, bourdel2004esb, kinast2005hcs, Stewart06}.
