Entropic order parameters and topological holography

We show that the symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT) construction, also known as the topological holography, provides a natural and intuitive framework for the entropic order parameter characterising phases with (partially) broken symmetries. Various examples of group and non-invertible symmetries are studied. In particular, the origin of the distinguishability of the vacua resulting from spontaneously broken non-invertible symmetries is made manifest with an information-theoretic perspective, where certain operators in the SymTFT are excluded from observation.

Entanglement Renormalization of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFT

In this work we use cMERA, a continuous tensor network, to find a Gaussian approximation to the ground state of a $T\bar{T}$-deformed scalar CFT on the line, to first order in the deformation parameter. The result is used to find the correction to the correlators of scaling operators of the theory and to the entanglement entropy of a half-line. From the latter, we discuss the non-localities induced by the $T\bar{T}$-deformation at short length scales. We find that the kind of non-locality generated by those terms can be considered as a mild-one, in the sense that it does not violate the area law of entanglement. In the context of the conjectured connection between cMERA and holography, we find that at first insight a finite bulk radius can be defined in the putative geometric dual description of cMERA. However, the entropy analysis contradicts the proposal that no geometry can be ascribed to the region outside this radial cutoff.

The Large $N$ Limit of icMERA and Holography

In this work, we compute the entanglement entropy in continuous icMERA tensor networks for large $N$ models at strong coupling. Our results show that the $1/N$ quantum corrections to the Fisher information metric (interpreted as a local bond dimension of the tensor network) in an icMERA circuit, are related to quantum corrections to the minimal area surface in the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. Upon picking two different non-Gaussian entanglers to build the icMERA circuit, the results for the entanglement entropy only differ at subleading orders in $1/G_N$, i.e, at the structure of the quantum corrections in the bulk. The fact that the large $N$ part of the entropy can be always related to the leading area term of the holographic calculation is very suggestive. These results, constitute the first tensor network calculations at large $N$ and strong coupling simultaneously, pushing the field of tensor network descriptions of the emergence of dual spacetime geometries from the structure of entanglement in quantum field theory.

Entanglement Entropy: Non-Gaussian States and Strong Coupling

In this work we provide a method to study the entanglement entropy for non-Gaussian states that minimize the energy functional of interacting quantum field theories at arbitrary coupling. To this end, we build a class of non-Gaussian variational trial wavefunctionals with the help of exact nonlinear canonical transformations. The calculability \emph{bonanza} shown by these variational \emph{ansatze} allows us to compute the entanglement entropy using the prescription for the ground state of free theories. In free theories, the entanglement entropy is determined by the two-point correlation functions. For the interacting case, we show that these two-point correlators can be replaced by their nonperturbatively corrected counterparts. Upon giving some general formulae for general interacting models we calculate the entanglement entropy of half space and compact regions for the $ϕ^4$ scalar field theory in 2D. Finally, we analyze the rôle played by higher order correlators in our results and show that strong subadditivity is satisfied.

Non-Gaussian Entanglement Renormalization for Quantum Fields

In this work, a non-Gaussian cMERA tensor network for interacting quantum field theories (icMERA) is presented. This consists of a continuous tensor network circuit in which the generator of the entanglement renormalization of the wavefunction is nonperturbatively extended with nonquadratic variational terms. The icMERA circuit nonperturbatively implements a set of scale dependent nonlinear transformations on the fields of the theory, which suppose a generalization of the scale dependent linear transformations induced by the Gaussian cMERA circuit. Here we present these transformations for the case of self-interacting scalar and fermionic field theories. Finally, the icMERA tensor network is fully optimized for the $λϕ^4$ theory in $(1+1)$ dimensions. This allows us to evaluate, nonperturbatively, the connected parts of the two- and four-point correlation functions. Our results show that icMERA wavefunctionals encode proper non-Gaussian correlations of the theory, thus providing a new variational tool to study phenomena related with strongly interacting field theories.

Entanglement Renormalization and Two Dimensional String Theory

The entanglement renormalization flow of a (1+1) free boson is formulated as a path integral over some auxiliary scalar fields. The resulting effective theory for these fields amounts to the dilaton term of non-critical string theory in two spacetime dimensions. A connection between the scalar fields in the two theories is provided, allowing to acquire novel insights into how a theory of gravity emerges from the entanglement structure of another one without gravity.

Information Geometry of Entanglement Renormalization for free Quantum Fields

We provide an explicit connection between the differential generation of entanglement entropy in a tensor network representation of the ground states of two field theories, and a geometric description of these states based on the Fisher information metric. We show how the geometrical description remains invariant despite there is an irreducible gauge freedom in the definition of the tensor network. The results might help to understand how spacetimes may emerge from distributions of quantum states, or more concretely, from the structure of the quantum entanglement concomitant to those distributions.

An Operator Product Expansion for the Mutual Information in AdS/CFT

We investigate the behaviour of the mutual information $\mathcal{I}_{AB}$ between two "small" and wide separated spherical regions $A$ and $B$ in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM gauge theory dual to Type IIB string theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$. To this end, the mutual information is recasted in terms of correlators of surface operators $\mathcal{W}\left( Σ\right)$ defined along a surface $Σ$ within the boundary gauge theory. This construction relies on the strong analogies between the twist field operators appearing in the replica trick method used for the computation of the entanglement entropy, and the disorder-like surface operators in gauge theories. In the AdS/CFT correspondence, a surface operator $\mathcal{W}\left( Σ\right)$ corresponds to having a D3-brane in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ ending on the boundary along the prescribed surface $Σ$. Then, a long distance expansion for $\mathcal{I}_{AB}$ is provided. The coefficients of the expansion appear as a byproduct of the operator product expansion for the correlators of the operators $\mathcal{W}(Σ)$ with the chiral primaries of the theory. We find that, while undergoing a phase transition at a critical distance, the holographic mutual information, instead of strictly vanishing, decays with a power law whose leading contributions of order $\mathcal{O}(N^0)$, originate from the exchange of pairs of the lightest bulk particles between $A$ and $B$. These particles correspond to operators in the boundary field theory with the smallest scaling dimensions.

Entanglement, Tensor Networks and Black Hole Horizons

We elaborate on a previous proposal by Hartman and Maldacena on a tensor network which accounts for the scaling of the entanglement entropy in a system at a finite temperature. In this construction, the ordinary entanglement renormalization flow given by the class of tensor networks known as the Multi Scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA), is supplemented by an additional entanglement structure at the length scale fixed by the temperature. The network comprises two copies of a MERA circuit with a fixed number of layers and a pure matrix product state which joins both copies by entangling the infrared degrees of freedom of both MERA networks. The entanglement distribution within this bridge state defines reduced density operators on both sides which cause analogous effects to the presence of a black hole horizon when computing the entanglement entropy at finite temperature in the AdS/CFT correspondence. The entanglement and correlations during the thermalization process of a system after a quantum quench are also analyzed. To this end, a full tensor network representation of the action of local unitary operations on the bridge state is proposed. This amounts to a tensor network which grows in size by adding succesive layers of bridge states. Finally, we discuss on the holographic interpretation of the tensor network through a notion of distance within the network which emerges from its entanglement distribution.

An $xp$ model on $AdS_2$ spacetime

In this paper we formulate the $xp$ model on the AdS$_2$ spacetime. We find that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian has positive and negative eigenvalues, whose absolute values are given by a harmonic oscillator spectrum, which in turn coincides with that of a massive Dirac fermion in AdS$_2$. We extend this result to generic $xp$ models which are shown to be equivalent to a massive Dirac fermion on spacetimes whose metric depend of the $xp$ Hamiltonian. Finally, we construct the generators of the isometry group SO(2,1) of the AdS$_2$ spacetime, and discuss the relation with conformal quantum mechanics.

Holographic Geometries of one-dimensional gapped quantum systems from Tensor Network States

We investigate a recent conjecture connecting the AdS/CFT correspondence and entanglement renormalization tensor network states (MERA). The proposal interprets the tensor connectivity of the MERA states associated to quantum many body systems at criticality, in terms of a dual holographic geometry which accounts for the qualitative aspects of the entanglement and the correlations in these systems. In this work, some generic features of the entanglement entropy and the two point functions in the ground state of one dimensional gapped systems are considered through a tensor network state. The tensor network is builded up as an hybrid composed by a finite number of MERA layers and a matrix product state (MPS) acting as a cap layer. Using the holographic formula for the entanglement entropy, here it is shown that an asymptotically AdS metric can be associated to the hybrid MERA-MPS state. The metric is defined by a function that manages the growth of the minimal surfaces near the capped region of the geometry. Namely, it is shown how the behaviour of the entanglement entropy and the two point correlators in the tensor network, remains consistent with a geometric computation which only depends on this function. From these observations, an explicit connection between the entanglement structure of the tensor network and the function which defines the geometry is provided.

Connecting Entanglement Renormalization and Gauge/Gravity dualities

In this work we provide additional support for the proposed connection between the gauge/gravity dualities in string theory and the successful Multi-Scale-Entanglement-Renormalization-anstaz (MERA) method developed for the efficient simulation of quantum many body systems at criticality. This support comes by showing an explicit formal equivalence between the real space renormalization group (RG) flow of the two point correlation functions in different types of MERA states and the holographic RG flow of these correlation functions in asymptotically Anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. These observations may be useful in order to formalize and make more precise the connection between the properties of different MERA states and their potential holographic descriptions.

Entanglement in bipartite pure states of an interacting boson gas obtained by local projective measurements

We quantify the extractable entanglement of excited states of a Lieb-Liniger gas that are obtained from coarse-grained measurements on the ground state in which the boson number in one of two complementary contiguous partitions of the gas is determined. Numerically exact results obtained from the coordinate Bethe ansatz show that the von Neumann entropy of the resulting bipartite pure state increases monotonically with the strength of repulsive interactions and saturates to the impenetrable boson limiting value. We also present evidence indicating that the largest amount of entanglement can be extracted from the most probable projected state having half the number of bosons in a given partition. Our study points to a fundamental difference between the nature of the entanglement in free-bosonic and free-fermionic systems, with the entanglement in the former being zero after projection, while that in the latter (corresponding to the impenetrable boson limit) being non-zero.

Holographic View on Quantum Correlations and Mutual Information between Disjoint Blocks of a Quantum Critical System

In (d+1) dimensional Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) networks, tensors are connected so as to reproduce the discrete, (d + 2) holographic geometry of Anti de Sitter space (AdSd+2) with the original system lying at the boundary. We analyze the MERA renormalization flow that arises when computing the quantum correlations between two disjoint blocks of a quantum critical system, to show that the structure of the causal cones characteristic of MERA, requires a transition between two different regimes attainable by changing the ratio between the size and the separation of the two disjoint blocks. We argue that this transition in the MERA causal developments of the blocks may be easily accounted by an AdSd+2 black hole geometry when the mutual information is computed using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. As an explicit example, we use a BTZ AdS3 black hole to compute the MI and the quantum correlations between two disjoint intervals of a one dimensional boundary critical system. Our results for this low dimensional system not only show the existence of a phase transition emerging when the conformal four point ratio reaches a critical value but also provide an intuitive entropic argument accounting for the source of this instability. We discuss the robustness of this transition when finite temperature and finite size effects are taken into account.
