Asymmetric Transport in Long-Range Interacting Chiral Spin Chains

Harnessing power-law interactions ($1/r^α$) in a large variety of physical systems are increasing. We study the dynamics of chiral spin chains as a possible multi-directional quantum channel. This arises from the nonlinear character of the dispersion with complex quantum interference effects. Using complementary numerical and analytical techniques, we propose a model to guide quantum states to a desired direction. We illustrate our approach using the long-range XXZ model modulated by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By exploring non-equilibrium dynamics after a local quantum quench, we identify the interplay of interaction range $α$ and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling giving rise to an appreciable asymmetric spin excitations transport. This could be interesting for quantum information protocols to transfer quantum states, and it may be testable with current trapped-ion experiments. We further explore the growth of block entanglement entropy in these systems, and an order of magnitude reduction is distinguished.

Thermovoltage and heat dissipation in a triangle quantum dot junction

We numerically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a triangle quantum dot connected to metallic electrodes using the non-equilibrium Green's function method in the Anderson model. Exploiting the equation of motion method in the Coulomb-blockade regime, the thermovoltage, thermocurrent and heat dissipation are calculated. Results show that the thermovoltage and thermocurrent have nonlinear behavior, and the magnitude and sign of them can be controlled with site energy and coupling strength of quantum dots. Moreover, we find that the heat current is nonlinear and asymmetric respect to the sign of bias voltage for all of the site energies of quantum dots. Analyses show that the heat current can be positive or negative for all of the site energies and becomes zero for the nonzero voltages. These results can be useful to determine the performance of the nanoscale electronic devices to control the heat dissipations.

Edge magnetic properties of black phosphorene nanoribbons

The magnetic properties of black phosphorene nanoribbons are investigated using static and dynamical mean-field theory. Besides confirming the existence of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic edge magnetism, our detailed calculations using large unit-cells find a phase-transition at weak interaction strength to an incommensurate (IC) magnetic phase. A detailed Fourier analysis of the magnetization patterns in the IC phase shows the existence of a second critical interaction strength, where the incommensurate phase changes to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) or ferromagnetic (FM) phase. We demonstrate that the difference of the ground state energies of the AFM and FM phase is exponentially small, making it possible to switch between both states by a small external field. Finally, we analyze the influence of strain and disorder on the magnetic properties and show that while the IC phase is robust to Anderson type disorder, it is fragile against strain.

Spin-caloritronic transport in hexagonal graphene nanoflakes

We investigate the spin-dependent thermoelectric effect of graphene flakes with magnetic edges in the ballistic regime. Employing static, respectively, dynamic mean-field theory we first show that magnetism appears at the zigzag edges for a window of Coulomb interactions that increases significantly with increasing flake size. We then use the Landauer formalism in the framework of the non-equilibrium Green's function method to calculate the spin and charge currents in magnetic hexagonal graphene flakes by varying the temperature of the junction for different flake sizes. While in non-magnetic gated graphene the temperature gradient drives a charge current, we observe a significant spin current for hexagonal graphene flakes with magnetic zigzag edges. Specifically, we show that in the "meta" configuration of a hexagonal flake subject to weak Coulomb interactions, a pure spin current can be driven just by a temperature gradient in a temperature range that is promising for device applications. Bigger flakes are found to yield a bigger window of Coulomb interactions where such spin currents are induced by the magnetic zigzag edges, and larger values of the current.

The Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice: from static and dynamical mean-field theories to lattice quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We study the one-band Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and static as well as dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). This model is known to show a quantum phase transition between a Dirac semi-metal and the antiferromagnetic insulator. The aim of this article is to provide a detailed comparison between these approaches by computing static properties, notably ground-state energy, single-particle gap, double occupancy, and staggered magnetization, as well as dynamical quantities such as the single-particle spectral function. At the static mean-field level local moments cannot be generated without breaking the SU(2) spin symmetry. The DMFT approximation accounts for temporal fluctuations, thus captures both the evolution of the double occupancy and the resulting local moment formation in the paramagnetic phase. As a consequence, the DMFT approximation is found to be very accurate in the Dirac semi-metallic phase where local moment formation is present and the spin correlation length small. However, in the vicinity of the fermion quantum critical point the spin correlation length diverges and the spontaneous SU(2) symmetry breaking leads to low-lying Goldstone modes in the magnetically ordered phase. The impact of these spin fluctuations on the single-particle spectral function -- \textit{waterfall} features and narrow spin-polaron bands -- is only visible in the lattice QMC approach.

Heat dissipation and its relation to molecular orbital energies in single-molecule junctions

We present a theoretical study of the heat dissipation in single-molecule junctions. In order to investigate the heat dissipation in the electrodes and the relationship between the transmission spectra and the electronic structures, we consider a toy model that in which electrodes linked by a two-level molecular bridge. By using of the Landauer approach, we show how heat dissipation in the electrodes of a molecular junction is related to its transmission characteristics. We show that in general heat is not equally dissipated in the left and right electrodes of the junction and it depends on the bias polarity and the positions of molecule's energy levels with respect to the Fermi level. Also, we exploit the C$_{60}$ molecule as a junction and the results show a good agreement with the toy model. Our results for the heat dissipation are remarkable in the sense that they can be used to detect which energy levels of a junction are dominated in the transport process.

Shot Noise of Charge and Spin Current of a Quantum Dot Coupled to Semiconductor Electrodes

Based on the scattering matrix theory and non-equilibrium green function method, we have investigated the fluctuations of charge and spin current of the systems which consists of a quantum dot (QD) with a resonant level coupled to two semiconductor contacts within in alternative site $(AS)$ and alternative bond $(AB)$ framework, where two transverse $(B_x)$ and longitudinal $(B_z)$ magnetic fields are applied to the QD. It is only necessary to use the auto-correlation function to characterize the fluctuations of charge current for a two-terminal system because of the relation which is defined as $\sum_α^e S_{αβ}$ = $\sum_β^e S_{αβ}=0$. Our result shows that both auto-shot noise $(S_{LL})$ and cross-shot noise $(S_{LR})$ are essential to characterize the fluctuations of spin current when $B_x$ is present. Moreover, our model calculations show that the sign of the cross-shot noise of spin current is negative for all surface states of AS/QD/AS junctions, while it oscillates between positive and negative values for two surface states of AB/QD/AB junctions as we sweep the gate voltage.

Spin and charge thermopower effects in the ferromagnetic graphene junction

Using wave function matching approach and employing the Landauer-Buttiker formula a ferromagnetic graphene junction with a temperature gradient across the system, is studied. We calculate the thermally induced charge and spin current as well as the thermoelectric voltage (Seebeck effect) in the linear and nonlinear regimes. Our calculation revealed that due to the electron-hole symmetry, the charge Seebeck coefficient is, for an undoped magnetic graphene, an odd function of chemical potential while the spin Seebeck coefficient is an even function regardless of the temperature gradient and junction length. We have also found with an accurate tuning external parameter, namely the exchange filed and gate voltage, the temperature gradient across the junction drives a pure spin current without accompanying the charge current. Another important characteristic of thermoelectric transport, thermally induced current in the nonlinear regime, is examined. It would be our main finding that with increasing thermal gradient applied to the junction the spin and charge thermovoltages decrease and even become zero for non-zero temperature bias.

Effects of quantum interference on the electron transport in the semiconductor$/$benzene$/$semiconductor junction

Using the tight-binding model and the generalized Green's function formalism, the effect of quantum interference on the electron transport through the benzene molecule in a semiconductor/benzene/semiconductor junction is numerically investigated. We show how the quantum interference sources, different contact positions and local gate, can control the transmission characteristics of the electrode/molecule/electrode junction. We also study the occurrence of anti-resonant states in the transmission probability function using a simple graphical scheme (introduced in Ref.[Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys, 2011, 13, 1431]) for different geometries of the contacts between the benzene molecule and semiconductor(silicon and titanium dioxide) electrodes.

Quantum interference effects on the noise power in the CNT/aGNR/CNT junction

Based on tight-binding model and a generalized Green's function method in Landauer-Büttiker formalism, the effects of quantum interference (QI) on the noise power and Fano factor of an armchair graphene nanoribbon (aGNR) sandwiched between infinite single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) as a CNT/aGNR/CNT system are numerically investigated. In this work, changing the aGNR to CNT electrodes contact positions and applying the magnetic field as two sources of QI are considered. We have found different Fano-resonance and anti-resonance peaks on the transmission probability in the presence of QI sources that show profound effects on the current-voltage characteristics and noise power. Our results also show that the shot noise characteristic, either in the Poisson limit ($F=1$) or sub-Poisson limit ($F<1$), and also maximum value of the Fano factor strongly depend on the aGNR to CNT electrodes contact positions and the magnetic field strength. These results can be useful for designing the future nano-electronic devices.

1D Frustrated Ferromagnetic Model with Added Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

The one-dimensional (1D) isotropic frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 model is considered. Classical and quantum effects of adding a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on the ground state of the system is studied using the analytical cluster method and numerical Lanczos technique. Cluster method results, show that the classical ground state magnetic phase diagram consists of only one single phase: "chiral". The quantum corrections are determined by means of the Lanczos method and a rich quantum phase diagram including the gapless Luttinger liquid, the gapped chiral and dimer orders is obtained. Moreover, next nearest neighbors will be entangled by increasing DM interaction and for open chains, end-spins are entangled which shows the long distance entanglement (LDE) feature that can be controlled by DM interaction.

Quantum corrections of the biquadratic interaction in the 1D spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic systems

Quantum corrections of the biquadratic interaction in the 1D spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic Heisenberg model are studied. The biquadratic interaction for spin-1/2 chains is eliminated and transformed to the quadratic interaction. Doing a numerical experiment, new insight as to how the classical phases get modified on the inclusion of quantum fluctuations is provided. Observed results suggest the existence of an intermediate region in the ground state phase diagram of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains with combination of dimer and chiral orders. In addition, from the quantum entanglement view point, differences between quantum phases are also obtained. The nearest neighbor spins never be entangled in the frustrated ferromagnetic chains but are entangled up to the Majumdar-Ghosh point in the frustrated antiferromagnetic chains. On the other hand, the next nearest neighbor spins in the mentioned intermediate region are entangled.

Entanglement study of the 1D Ising model with Added Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction

We have studied occurrence of quantum phase transition in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising model with added Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interaction from bi- partite and multi-partite entanglement point of view. Using exact numerical solutions, we are able to study such systems up to 24 qubits. The minimum of the entanglement ratio R $\equiv$ τ2/τ1 < 1, as a novel estimator of QPT, has been used to detect QPT and our calculations have shown that its minimum took place at the critical point. We have also shown both the global-entanglement (GE) and multipartite entanglement (ME) are maximal at the critical point for the Ising chain with added DM interaction. Using matrix product state approach, we have calculated the tangle and concurrence of the model and it is able to capture and confirm our numerical experiment result. Lack of inversion symmetry in the presence of DM interaction stimulated us to study entanglement of three qubits in symmetric and antisymmetric way which brings some surprising results.
