Instantons on flat space: Explicit constructions

In this note, we revisit some well-known examples of instantons on flat space that were originally discovered in the physics literature. In particular, we explain how the basic instanton on $\mathbb{R}^4$, with its flat hyperkaehler structure, has natural generalisations to $\mathbb{R}^7$ and $\mathbb{R}^8$ viewed as flat $G_2$- and Spin(7)-manifolds, respectively. We also provide the details of an arguably less known construction of ASD instantons on $\mathbb{H}^n$, in the sense of quaternionic geometry.

Neck pinches along the Lagrangian mean curvature flow of surfaces

Let $L_t$ be a zero Maslov, rational Lagrangian mean curvature flow in a compact Calabi-Yau surface, and suppose that at the first singular time a tangent flow is given by the static union of two transverse planes. We show that in this case the tangent flow is unique, and that the flow can be continued past the singularity as an immersed, smooth, zero Maslov, rational Lagrangian mean curvature flow. Furthermore, if $L_0$ is a sphere that is stable in the sense of Thomas-Yau, then such a singularity cannot form.

Special Lagrangians, Lagrangian mean curvature flow and the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz

The Gibbons-Hawking ansatz provides a large family of circle-invariant hyperkaehler 4-manifolds, and thus Calabi-Yau 2-folds. In this setting, we prove versions of the Thomas conjecture on existence of special Lagrangian representatives of Hamiltonian isotopy classes of Lagrangians, and the Thomas-Yau conjecture on long-time existence of the Lagrangian mean curvature flow. We also make observations concerning closed geodesics, curve shortening flow and minimal surfaces.

Examples of deformed G_2-instantons/Donaldson-Thomas connections

In this note, we provide the first non-trivial examples of deformed G_2-instantons, originally called deformed Donaldson-Thomas connections. As a consequence, we see how deformed G_2-instantons can be used to distinguish between nearly parallel G_2-structures and isometric G_2-structures on 3-Sasakian 7-manifolds. Our examples give non-trivial deformed G_2-instantons with obstructed deformation theory and situations where the moduli space of deformed G_2-instantons has components of different dimensions. We finally study the relation between our examples and a Chern-Simons type functional which has deformed G_2-instantons as critical points.

Bryant-Salamon $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifolds and coassociative fibrations

Bryant-Salamon constructed three 1-parameter families of complete manifolds with holonomy $\mathrm{G}_2$ which are asymptotically conical to a holonomy $\mathrm{G}_2$ cone. For each of these families, including their asymptotic cone, we construct a fibration by asymptotically conical and conically singular coassociative 4-folds. We show that these fibrations are natural generalizations of the following three well-known coassociative fibrations on $\mathbb R^7$: the trivial fibration by 4-planes, the product of the standard Lefschetz fibration of $\mathbb C^3$ with a line, and the Harvey-Lawson coassociative fibration. In particular, we describe coassociative fibrations of the bundle of anti-self-dual 2-forms over the 4-sphere $\mathcal{S}^4$, and the cone on $\mathbb C \mathbb P^3$, whose smooth fibres are $T^*\mathcal{S}^2$, and whose singular fibres are $\mathbb R^4/\{\pm 1\}$. We relate these fibrations to hypersymplectic geometry, Donaldson's work on Kovalev-Lefschetz fibrations, harmonic 1-forms and the Joyce--Karigiannis construction of holonomy $\mathrm{G}_2$ manifolds, and we construct vanishing cycles and associative "thimbles" for these fibrations.

Examples of equivariant Lagrangian mean curvature flow

In this expository note we describe important examples of Lagrangian mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{C}^2$ which are invariant under a circle action. Through these examples, we see compact and non-compact situations, long-time existence, singularities forming via explicit models, and significant objects in Riemannian and symplectic geometry, including the Clifford torus, Chekanov torus, Whitney sphere and Lawlor necks.

Remarks on the self-shrinking Clifford torus

On the one hand, we prove that the Clifford torus in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is unstable for Lagrangian mean curvature flow under arbitrarily small Hamiltonian perturbations, even though it is Hamiltonian $F$-stable and locally area minimising under Hamiltonian variations. On the other hand, we show that the Clifford torus is rigid: it is locally unique as a self-shrinker for mean curvature flow, despite having infinitesimal deformations which do not arise from rigid motions. The proofs rely on analysing higher order phenomena: specifically, showing that the Clifford torus is not a local entropy minimiser even under Hamiltonian variations, and demonstrating that infinitesimal deformations which do not generate rigid motions are genuinely obstructed.

Consequences of strong stability of minimal submanifolds

In this note we show that the recent dynamical stability result for small $C^1$-perturbations of strongly stable minimal submanifolds of C.-J. Tsai and M.-T. Wang directly extends to the enhanced Brakke flows of Ilmanen. We illustrate applications of this result, including a local uniqueness statement for strongly stable minimal submanifolds amongst stationary varifolds, and a mechanism to flow through some singularities of Lagrangian mean curvature flow which are proved to occur by Neves.

From Lagrangian to totally real geometry: coupled flows and calibrations

We show that the properties of Lagrangian mean curvature flow are a special case of a more general phenomenon, concerning couplings between geometric flows of the ambient space and of totally real submanifolds. Both flows are driven by ambient Ricci curvature or, in the non-Kähler case, by its analogues. To this end we explore the geometry of totally real submanifolds, defining (i) a new geometric flow in terms of the ambient canonical bundle, (ii) a modified volume functional which takes into account the totally real condition. We discuss short-time existence for our flow and show it couples well with the Streets-Tian symplectic curvature flow for almost Kähler manifolds. We also discuss possible applications to Lagrangian submanifolds and calibrated geometry.

Desingularization of Coassociative 4-folds with Conical Singularities: Obstructions and Applications

We study the problem of desingularizing coassociative conical singularities via gluing, allowing for topological and analytic obstructions, and discuss applications. This extends the author's earlier work on the unobstructed case. We interpret the analytic obstructions geometrically via the obstruction theory for deformations of conically singular coassociative 4-folds, and thus relate them to the stability of the singularities. We use our results to describe the relationship between moduli spaces of coassociative 4-folds with conical singularities and those of their desingularizations. We also apply our theory in examples, including to the known conically singular coassociative 4-folds in compact holonomy G_2 manifolds.

Associative Submanifolds of the 7-Sphere

Associative submanifolds of the 7-sphere S^7 are 3-dimensional minimal submanifolds which are the links of calibrated 4-dimensional cones in R^8 called Cayley cones. Examples of associative 3-folds are thus given by the links of complex and special Lagrangian cones in C^4, as well as Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler 6-sphere. By classifying the associative group orbits, we exhibit the first known explicit example of an associative 3-fold in S^7 which does not arise from other geometries. We then study associative 3-folds satisfying the curvature constraint known as Chen's equality, which is equivalent to a natural pointwise condition on the second fundamental form, and describe them using a new family of pseudoholomorphic curves in the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^8 and isotropic minimal surfaces in S^6. We also prove that associative 3-folds which are ruled by geodesic circles, like minimal surfaces in space forms, admit families of local isometric deformations. Finally, we construct associative 3-folds satisfying Chen's equality which have an S^1-family of global isometric deformations using harmonic 2-spheres in S^6.

Stability of Coassociative Conical Singularities

We study the stability of coassociative 4-folds with conical singularities under perturbations of the ambient G_2 structure by defining an integer invariant of a coassociative cone which we call the stability index. The stability index of a coassociative cone is determined by the spectrum of the curl operator acting on its link. We explicitly calculate the stability index for cones on group orbits. We also describe the stability index for cones fibered by 2-planes over algebraic curves using the degree and genus of the curve and the spectrum of the Laplacian on the link. Finally we apply our results to construct the first known examples of coassociative 4-folds with conical singularities in compact manifolds with G_2 holonomy.

Asymptotically Conical Associative 3-folds

Given an associative 3-fold in R^7 which is asymptotically conical with generic rate less than 1, we show that its moduli space of deformations is locally homeomorphic to the kernel of a smooth map between smooth manifolds. Moreover, the virtual dimension of the moduli space is computed and shown to be non-negative for rates greater than -1, whereas the associative 3-fold is expected to be isolated for rates less than or equal to -1.

Ruled Lagrangian Submanifolds of the 6-Sphere

This article sets out to serve a dual purpose. On the one hand, we give an explicit description of the Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kaehler 6-sphere which are ruled by circles of constant radius using Weierstrass formulae. On the other, we recognise all previous known examples of these Lagrangians as being ruled by such circles. Therefore, we describe all families of Lagrangians in the 6-sphere whose second fundamental form satisfies natural pointwise conditions: so-called second order families.
