τBcτ_{B_c} in the Standard Model

The Standard Model prediction of the BcB_c lifetime is discussed, together with the dominant uncertainties and strategies on how to improve them. Furthermore, a new method to compute the BcB_c lifetime based on the operator product expansion is proposed. It relies on differences of B, DB,\,D and BcB_c meson decay rates, in which the free-quark contributions cancel out, reducing the uncertainty of the theory prediction.

NLO QCD Renormalization Group Evolution for Non-Leptonic ΔF=2ΔF=2 Transitions in the SMEFT

We present for the first time NLO QCD Renormalization Group (RG) evolution matrices for non-leptonic ΔF=2ΔF=2 transitions in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). To this end we transform first the known two-loop QCD anomalous dimension matrices (ADMs) of the BSM operators in the so-called BMU basis into the ones in the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. This allows us subsequently to find the two-loop QCD ADMs for the SMEFT non-leptonic ΔF=2ΔF=2 operators in the Warsaw basis. Having all these ingredients we investigate the impact of these NLO QCD effects on the QCD RG evolution of SMEFT Wilson coefficients for non-leptonic ΔF=2ΔF=2 transitions from the new physics scale ΛΛ down to the electroweak scale μewμ_\text{ew}. The main benefit of these new contributions is that they allow to remove renormalization scheme dependences present both in the one-loop matchings between the WET and SMEFT and also between SMEFT and a chosen UV completion. But the NLO QCD effects, calculated here in the NDR scheme, turn out to be small, in the ballpark of a few percent but larger than one-loop Yukawa top effects when only the ΔF=2ΔF=2 operators are considered. The technology developed in our paper allows to obtain the ADMs in the SMEFT from the ones of the BMU basis also for non-leptonic ΔF=1ΔF=1 decays and the results of this more involved analysis will be presented soon in another publication.

On the Importance of Rare Kaon Decays: A Snowmass 2021 White Paper

We stress the importance of precise measurements of rare decays K+→π+ννˉK^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν, KL→π0ννˉK_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν, KL,S→μ+μ−K_{L,S}\toμ^+μ^- and KL,S→π0ℓ+ℓ−K_{L,S}\toπ^0\ell^+\ell^- for the search of new physics (NP). This includes both branching ratios and the distributions in q2q^2, the invariant mass-squared of the neutrino system in the case of K+→π+ννˉK^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν and KL→π0ννˉK_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν and of the ℓ+ℓ−\ell^+\ell^- system in the case of the remaining decays. In particular the correlations between these observables and their correlations with the ratio ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in KL→ππK_L\toππ decays, the CP-violating parameter εK\varepsilon_K and the K0−Kˉ0K^0-\bar K^0 mass difference ΔMKΔM_K, should help to disentangle the nature of possible NP. We stress the strong sensitivity of all observables with the exception of ΔMKΔM_K to the CKM parameter ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}| and list a number of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|-independent ratios within the SM which exhibit rather different dependences on the angles ββ and γγ of the unitarity triangle. The particular role of these decays in probing very short distance scales far beyond the ones explored at the LHC is emphasized. In this context the role of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) is very important. We also address briefly the issue of the footprints of Majorana neutrinos in K+→π+ννˉK^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν and KL→π0ννˉK_L\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν.

One-loop Fierz Transformations

Fierz transformations for four-fermion operators are generalized to the one-loop level. A general renormalization scheme is used to compute QCD and QED corrections to the tree-level relations, which result from Fierz-evanescent operators. The results can be used to perform general one-loop basis transformations involving four-fermi and evanescent operators. We illustrate the usefulness of our results by discussing two examples from a matching calculation and a one-loop basis change.

BSM Master Formula for ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in the WET Basis at NLO in QCD

As an important step towards a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of the ratio ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we present for the first time the NLO master formula for the BSM part of this ratio expressed in terms of the Wilson coefficients of all contributing operators evaluated at the electroweak scale. To this end we use the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. The relevant hadronic matrix elements of BSM operators at the electroweak scale are taken from Dual QCD approach and the SM ones from lattice QCD. It includes the renormalization group evolution and quark-flavour threshold effects at NLO in QCD from hadronic scales, at which these matrix elements have been calculated, to the electroweak scale.

ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in the Standard Model at the Dawn of the 2020s

We reanalyse the ratio ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in the Standard Model (SM) using most recent hadronic matrix elements from the RBC-UKQCD collaboration in combination with most important NNLO QCD corrections to electroweak penguin contributions and the isospin-breaking corrections. We illustrate the importance of the latter by using their latest estimate from chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) based on the octetoctet approximation for lowest-lying mesons and a very recent estimate in the nonetnonet scheme that takes into account the contribution of η0η_0. We find (ε′/ε)SM(8)=(17.4±6.1)×10−4(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)^{(8)}_\text{SM} = (17.4 \pm 6.1) \times 10^{-4} and (ε′/ε)SM(9)=(13.9±5.2)×10−4(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)^{(9)}_\text{SM} = (13.9 \pm 5.2) \times 10^{-4}, respectively. Despite a very good agreement with the measured value (ε′/ε)exp=(16.6±2.3)×10−4(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{exp} = (16.6 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-4}, the large error in (ε′/ε)SM(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} still leaves room for significant new physics (BSM) contributions to this ratio. We update the 2018 master formula for (ε′/ε)BSM(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{BSM} valid in any extension beyond the SM without additional light degrees of freedom. We provide new values of the penguin parameters B6(1/2)(μ)B_6^{(1/2)}(μ) and B8(3/2)(μ)B_8^{(3/2)}(μ) at the μμ-scales used by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration and at lower scales O(1 GeV)\mathcal{O}(1\,\text{GeV}) used by ChPT and DQCD. We present semi-analytic formulae for (ε′/ε)SM(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} in terms of these parameters and Ω^eff\hatΩ_\text{eff} that summarizes isospin-breaking corrections to this ratio. We stress the importance of lattice calculations of the O(αem)\mathcal{O}(α_\text{em}) contributions to the hadronic matrix elements necessary for the removal of renormalization scheme dependence at O(αem)\mathcal{O}(α_\text{em}) in the present analyses of ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon.

On the Importance of NNLO QCD and Isospin-breaking Corrections in ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon

Following the 1999 analysis of Gambino, Haisch and one of us, we stress that all the recent NLO analyses of ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in the Standard Model (SM) suffer from the renormalization scheme dependence present in the electroweak penguin contributions as well as from scale uncertainties in them related to the matching scale μWμ_W and in particular to μtμ_t in mt(μt)m_t(μ_t). We also reemphasize the important role of isospin-breaking and QED effects in the evaluation of ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon. Omitting all these effects, as done in the 2015 analysis by RBC-UKQCD collaboration, and choosing as an example the QCD penguin (Q6Q_6) and electroweak penguin (Q8Q_8) parameters B6(1/2)B_6^{(1/2)} and B8(3/2)B_8^{(3/2)} to be B6(1/2)=0.80±0.08B_6^{(1/2)} = 0.80 \pm 0.08 and B8(3/2)=0.76±0.04B_8^{(3/2)} = 0.76 \pm 0.04 at μ=mc=1.3μ= m_c = 1.3 GeV, we find (ε′/ε)SM=(9.4±3.5)×10−4(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} = (9.4 \pm 3.5) \times 10^{-4}, whereas including them results in (ε′/ε)SM=(5.6±2.4)×10−4(\varepsilon'/\varepsilon)_\text{SM} = (5.6\pm 2.4) \times 10^{-4}. This is an example of an anomaly at the 3.3 σ3.3\,σ level, which would be missed without these corrections. NNLO QCD contributions to QCD penguins are expected to further enhance this anomaly. We provide a table for ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon for different values of B6(1/2)B_6^{(1/2)} and the isospin-breaking parameter Ω^eff\hatΩ_\text{eff}, that should facilitate monitoring the values of ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon in the SM when the RBC-UKQCD calculations of hadronic matrix elements including isospin-breaking corrections and QED effects will improve with time.

SMEFT ATLAS of ΔF=2ΔF=2 Transitions

We present a model-independent anatomy of the ΔF=2ΔF=2 transitions K0−Kˉ0K^0-\bar K^0, Bs,d−Bˉs,dB_{s,d}-\bar B_{s,d} and D0−Dˉ0D^0-\bar D^0 in the context of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We present two master formulae for the mixing amplitude [M12]BSM\big[M_{12} \big]_\text{BSM}. One in terms of the Wilson coefficients (WCs) of the Low-Energy Effective Theory (LEFT) operators evaluated at the electroweak scale μewμ_\text{ew} and one in terms of the WCs of the SMEFT operators evaluated at the BSM scale ΛΛ. The coefficients PaijP_a^{ij} entering these formulae contain all the information below the scales μewμ_\text{ew} and ΛΛ, respectively. Renormalization group effects from the top-quark Yukawa coupling play the most important role. The collection of the individual contributions of the SMEFT operators to [M12]BSM\big[M_{12}\big]_\text{BSM} can be considered as the SMEFT ATLAS of ΔF=2ΔF=2 transitions and constitutes a travel guide to such transitions far beyond the scales explored by the LHC. We emphasize that this ATLAS depends on whether the down-basis or the up-basis for SMEFT operators is considered. We illustrate this technology with tree-level exchanges of heavy gauge bosons (Z′Z^\prime, G′G^\prime) and corresponding heavy scalars.

B-decay discrepancies after Moriond 2019

Following the updated measurement of the lepton flavour universality (LFU) ratio R_K in B -> Kll decays by LHCb, as well as a number of further measurements, e.g. R_K* by Belle and B_s -> mu mu by ATLAS, we analyse the global status of new physics in b -> s transitions in the weak effective theory at the b-quark scale, in the Standard Model effective theory at the electroweak scale, and in simplified models of new physics. We find that the data continues to strongly prefer a solution with new physics in semi-leptonic Wilson coefficients. A purely muonic contribution to the combination C_9 = -C_10, well suited to UV-complete interpretations, is now favoured with respect to a muonic contribution to C_9 only. An even better fit is obtained by allowing an additional LFU shift in C_9. Such a shift can be renormalization-group induced from four-fermion operators above the electroweak scale, in particular from semi-tauonic operators, able to account for the potential discrepancies in b -> c transitions. This scenario is naturally realized in the simplified U_1 leptoquark model. We also analyse simplified models where a LFU effect in b -> sll is induced radiatively from four-quark operators and show that such a setup is on the brink of exclusion by LHC di-jet resonance searches.

Quark-Lepton Connections in Z′Z^\prime Mediated FCNC Processes: Gauge Anomaly Cancellations at Work

We consider scenarios with a heavy Z′Z^\prime gauge boson with flavour non-universal quark and lepton couplings with the goal to illustrate how the cancellation of gauge anomalies generated by the additional U(1)′^\prime gauge symmetry would imply correlations between FCNC processes in the quark sector, in the lepton sector and most interestingly between quark flavour and lepton flavour violating processes. We present scenarios with only left-handed flavour-violating Z′Z^\prime couplings and those with also right-handed flavour-violating couplings. These are characterized by a small number of free parameters but in contrast to gauge anomaly cancellation in the Standard Model, that takes place separately within each generation, in our scenarios anomaly cancellation involves simultaneously quarks and leptons of all three generations. Our models involve, beyond the ordinary quarks and leptons, three heavy right-handed neutrinos. The models with only left-handed FCNCs of Z′Z^\prime involve beyond gZ′g_{Z^\prime} and MZ′M_{Z^\prime} two real parameters characterizing the charges of all fermions under the U(1)′^\prime gauge symmetry and the CKM and PMNS ones in the quark and lepton sectors, respectively. The models with the right-handed FCNCs of Z′Z^\prime involve few additional parameters. Imposing constraints from well measured ΔF=2ΔF=2 observables we identify interesting correlations that involve e.g. ε′/ε\varepsilon'/\varepsilon, Bs,d→μ+μ−B_{s,d}\toμ^+μ^-, B→K(K∗)ℓ+ℓ−B\to K(K^*) \ell^+\ell^-, K+→π+ννˉK^+\rightarrowπ^+ν\barν, KL→π0ννˉK_{L}\rightarrowπ^0ν\barν and purely lepton flavour violating decays like μ→eγμ\to eγ, μ→3eμ\to 3 e, τ→3μτ\to 3μ and μ−eμ-e conversion} among others. Also (g−2)μ,e(g-2)_{μ,e} are considered. The impact of the experimental μ→eγμ\to eγ, μ→3eμ\to 3 e and in particular μ−eμ-e conversion bounds on rare KK and BB decays is emphasized.

1-Loop Matching of gauge invariant dim-6 operators for B decays

Physics beyond the Standard Model, realized above the electroweak scale, can be incorporated in a model independent way in the Wilson coefficients of higher dimensional gauge invariant operators. In these proceedings we review the matching of the SU(3)C×SU(2)L×U(1)YSU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y gauge invariant dimension-six operators on the effective Hamiltonian governing b→sb\to s and b→cb\to c transitions, including the leading 1-loop effects.

1-loop SQCD corrections to the decay of top-squarks to charm and neutralino in the generic MSSM

In this article we calculate the 1-loop supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) corrections to the decay u~1→cχ~10\tilde u_1\to c \tildeχ^0_1 in the MSSM with generic flavour structure. This decay mode is phenomenologically important if the mass difference between the lightest squark u~1\tilde u_1 (which is assumed to be mainly stop-like) and the neutralino LSP χ~10\tilde χ^0_1 is smaller than the top mass. In such a scenario u~1→tχ~10\tilde u_1\to t \tildeχ^0_1 is kinematically not allowed and searches for u~1→Wbχ~10\tilde u_1\to W b \tildeχ^0_1 and u~1→cχ~10\tilde u_1\to c \tildeχ^0_1 are performed. A large decay rate for u~1→cχ~10\tilde u_1\to c \tildeχ^0_1 can weaken the LHC bounds from u~1→Wbχ10\tilde u_1\to W b χ^0_1 which are usually obtained under the assumption Br[u~1→Wbχ10]=100%{\rm Br}[\tilde u_1\to W b χ^0_1]=100\%. We find the SQCD corrections enhance Γ[u~1→cχ~10]Γ[\tilde u_1\to c \tildeχ^0_1] by approximately 10\% if the flavour-violation originates from bilinear terms. If flavour-violation originates from trilinear terms, the effect can be ±50%\pm 50\% or more, depending on the sign of AtA^t. We note that connecting a theory of SUSY breaking to LHC observables, the shift from the DR‾\overline{\rm DR} to the on-shell mass is numerically very important for light stop decays.
