Scaling of quadratic and linear magnetooptic Kerr effect spectra with L2$_1$ ordering of Co$_2$MnSi Heusler compound

The Heusler compound Co$_2$MnSi provides a crystallographic transition from B2 to L2$_1$ structure with increasing annealing temperature $T_a$, being a model system for investigating the influence of crystallographic ordering on structural, magnetic, optic, and magnetooptic (MO) properties. Here, we present quadratic magnetooptic Kerr effect (QMOKE) spectra depending on $M^2$ in addition to the linear magnetooptic Kerr effect (LinMOKE) spectra being proportional to $M$, both in the extended visible spectral range of light from 0.8\,eV to 5.5\,eV. We investigated a set of Co$_2$MnSi thin films deposited on MgO(001) substrates and annealed from 300$^\circ$C to 500$^\circ$C. The amplitude of LinMOKE and QMOKE spectra scales linearly with $T_a$, and this effect is well pronounced at the resonant peaks below 2.0\,eV of the QMOKE spectra. Furthermore, the spectra of the MO parameters, which fully describe the MO response of Co$_2$MnSi up to the second order in $M$, are obtained dependend on $T_a$. Finally, the spectra are compared to ab-initio calculations of a purely L2$_1$ ordered Co$_2$MnSi Heusler compound.

Magneto-optical properties of InSb for terahertz applications

Magneto-optical permittivity tensor spectra of undoped InSb, n-doped and p-doped InSb crystals were determined using the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and the Fourier transform far-infrared spectroscopy (far-FTIR). A Huge polar magneto-optical (MO) Kerr-effect (up to 20 degrees in rotation) and a simultaneous plasmonic behavior observed at low magnetic field (0.4 T) and room temperature are promising for terahertz nonreciprocal applications. We demonstrate the possibility of adjusting the the spectral rage with huge MO by increase in n-doping of InSb. Spectral response is modeled using generalized magneto-optical Drude-Lorentz theory, giving us precise values of free carrier mobility, density and effective mass consistent with electric Hall effect measurement.

Principal spectra describing magnetooptic permittivity tensor in cubic crystals

We provide unified phenomenological description of magnetooptic effects being linear and quadratic in magnetization. The description is based on few principal spectra, describing elements of permittivity tensor up to the second order in magnetization. Each permittivity tensor element for any magnetization direction and any sample surface orientation is simply determined by weighted summation of the principal spectra, where weights are given by crystallographic and magnetization orientations. The number of principal spectra depends on the symmetry of the crystal. In cubic crystals owning point symmetry we need only four principal spectra. Here, the principal spectra are expressed by ab-initio calculations for bcc Fe, fcc Co and fcc Ni in optical range as well as in hard and soft x-ray energy range, i.e. at the 2p- and 3p-edges. We also express principal spectra analytically using modified Kubo formula.

Quadratic-in-magnetization permittivity and conductivity tensor in cubic crystals

We present diagonal and off-diagonal elements of the permittivity and conductivity tensor up to the second order in magnetization for cubic crystals. We express all tensor elements as a function of a general sample orientation, for arbitrary magnetization direction and for (001), (011) and (111) surface orientations. Finally, we discuss, how to extract values of quadratic elements G of the second order permittivity tensors for different sample surface orientations from both experiment and ab-initio calculations.

Analytical expression of the magneto-optical Kerr effect and Brillouin light scattering intensity arising from dynamic magnetization

Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy are important techniques for the investigation of magnetization dynamics. Within this article, we calculate analytically the MOKE and BLS signals from prototypical spin-wave modes in the ferromagnetic layer. The reliability of the analytical expressions is confirmed by optically exact numerical calculations. Finally, we discuss the dependence of the MOKE and BLS signals on the ferromagnetic layer thickness.
