Collineations preserving the lattice of invariant subspaces of a linear transformation

Given a linear transformation AA on a finite-dimensional complex vector space $\eV$, in this paper we study the group $\Col(A)$ consisting of those invertible linear transformations SS on $\eV$ for which the mapping ΦSΦ_S defined as $Φ_S\colon \eM\mapsto S\eM$ is an automorphism of the lattice $\Lat(A)$ of all invariant subspaces of AA. By using the primary decomposition of AA, we first reduce the problem of characterizing $\Col(A)$ to the problem of characterizing the group $\Col(N)$ of a given nilpotent linear transformation NN. While $\Col(N)$ always contains all invertible linear transformations of the commutant (N)′(N)' of NN, it is always contained in the reflexive cover $\Alg\Lat(N)'$ of (N)′(N)'. We prove that $\Col(N)$ is a proper subgroup of $(\Alg\Lat(N)')^{-1}$ if and only if at least two Jordan blocks in the Jordan decomposition of NN are of dimension 22 or more. We also determine the group $\Col(\bdJ_2\oplus \bdJ_2)$.

Hyperinvariant subspaces for sets of polynomially compact operators

We prove the existence of a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace for several sets of polynomially compact operators. The main results of the paper are: (i) a non-trivial norm closed algebra A⊆B(X)\mathcal A\subseteq \mathcal B(\mathscr X) which consists of polynomially compact quasinilpotent operators has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace; (ii) if there exists a non-zero compact operator in the norm closure of the algebra generated by an operator band S\mathcal S, then S\mathcal S has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace.

Local commutants and ultrainvariant subspaces

For an operator AA on a complex Banach space XX and a closed subspace M⊆XM\subseteq X, the local commutant of AA at MM is the set C(A;M)C(A;M) of all operators TT on XX such that TAx=ATxTAx=ATx for every x∈Mx\in M. It is clear that C(A;M) C(A;M) is a closed linear space of operators, however it is not an algebra, in general. For a given AA, we show that C(A;M)C(A;M) is an algebra if and only if the largest subspace MAM_A such that C(A;M)=C(A;MA)C(A;M)=C(A;M_A) is invariant for every operator in C(A;M)C(A;M). We say that these are ultrainvariant subspaces of AA. For several types of operators we prove that there exist non-trivial ultrainvariant subspaces. For a normal operator on a Hilbert space, every hyperinvariant subspace is ultrainvariant. On the other hand, the lattice of all ultrainvariant subspaces of a non-zero nilpotent operator can be strictly smaller than the lattice of all hyperinvariant subspaces.

A characterization of reflexive spaces of operators

We show that for a linear space of operators M⊆B(H1,H2){\mathcal M}\subseteq {\mathcal B}(H_1,H_2) the following assertions are equivalent. (i) M{\mathcal M} is reflexive in the sense of Loginov--Shulman. (ii) There exists an order-preserving map Ψ=(ψ1,ψ2)Ψ=(ψ_1,ψ_2) on a bilattice Bil(M)Bil({\mathcal M}) of subspaces determined by M{\mathcal M}, with P≤ψ1(P,Q)P\leq ψ_1(P,Q) and Q≤ψ2(P,Q)Q\leq ψ_2(P,Q), for any pair (P,Q)∈Bil(M)(P,Q)\in Bil({\mathcal M}), and such that an operator T∈B(H1,H2)T\in {\mathcal B}(H_1,H_2) lies in M{\mathcal M} if and only if ψ2(P,Q)Tψ1(P,Q)=0ψ_2(P,Q)Tψ_1(P,Q)=0 for all (P,Q)∈Bil(M)(P,Q)\in Bil( {\mathcal M}). This extends to reflexive spaces the Erdos--Power type characterization of weakly closed bimodules over a nest algebra.

On the invertibility of elementary operators

Let X\mathscr{X} be a complex Banach space and L(X)\mathcal{L}(\mathscr{X}) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on X\mathscr{X}. For a given elementary operator ΦΦ of length 22 on L(X)\mathcal{L}(\mathscr{X}), we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution of the equation XΦ=0{\rm X} Φ=0 in the algebra of all elementary operators on L(X)\mathcal{L}(\mathscr{X}). Our approach allows us to characterize some invertible elementary operators of length 22 whose inverses are elementary operators.
