Phenomenology of spectral functions in disordered spin chains at infinite temperature

Studies of disordered spin chains have recently experienced a renewed interest, inspired by the question to which extent the exact numerical calculations comply with the existence of a many-body localization phase transition. For the paradigmatic random field Heisenberg spin chains, many intriguing features were observed when the disorder is considerable compared to the spin interaction strength. Here, we introduce a phenomenological theory that may explain some of those features. The theory is based on the proximity to the noninteracting limit, in which the system is an Anderson insulator. Taking the spin imbalance as an exemplary observable, we demonstrate that the proximity to the local integrals of motion of the Anderson insulator determines the dynamics of the observable at infinite temperature. In finite interacting systems our theory quantitatively describes its integrated spectral function for a wide range of disorders.

Reversal of relaxation due to dephasing environment

We show that any finite quantum system $S$ can be coupled to a dephasing environment in such a way that the internal mechanism responsible for relaxation of observables acting on $S$ can be effectively canceled. By adjusting this coupling, the difference between the initial and the long--time expectation values of any observable on $S$ can be tuned to arbitrarily small however nonzero value. This statement is exemplified and visualized by numerical studies of relaxation in a generic one-dimensional system of interacting fermions.

Unusual Two-stage Dynamics of the Spin-Lattice Polaron Formation

We follow the formation of a spin-lattice polaron after a quantum quench that simulates absorption of the pump{pulse in the time-resolved experiments. We discover a two-stage relaxation where spin and lattice degrees of freedom represent an integral part of the relaxation mechanism. In the first stage the kinetic energy of the spin-lattice polaron relaxes towards its ground state value while relaxation processes via spin and phonon degrees of freedom remain roughly independent. In the second, typically much longer stage, a subsequent energy transfer between lattice and spin degrees of freedom via the charge carrier emerges. The excess local spin energy radiates away via magnon excitations.

Double-Pulse Deexcitations in a One-Dimensional Strongly Correlated System

We investigate the ultrafast optical response of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model exposed to two successive laser pulses. By using the time-dependent Lanczos method, we find that following the first pulse, the excitation and deexcitation process between the ground state and excitonic states can be precisely controlled by the relative temporal displacement of the pulses. The underlying physics can be understood in terms of a modified Rabi model. Our simulations clearly demonstrate the controllability of ultrafast transition between excited and deexcited phases in strongly correlated electron systems.

Vibrational Andreev bound states in magnetic molecules

We predict the existence of vibrational Andreev bound states in deformable magnetic molecules on superconducting surfaces. We discuss the Anderson impurity model with electron-phonon coupling to a realistic anharmonic vibrational mode that modulates the tunneling barrier and show that the vibronic features are spectroscopically most visibile near the transition point between the Kondo-screened singlet and the unscreened doublet ground state. We find competing tendencies between phonon hardening due to anharmonicity and softening due to coupling to electrons, contrary to the Anderson-Holstein model and other models with harmonic local phonon mode where the vibrational mode is always softened. In addition, we find that the singlet and doublet many-body states may experience very different effective phonon potentials.

Integrable Mott insulators driven by finite electric field

We develop a method for extracting the steady nonequilibrium current from studies of driven isolated systems, applying it to the model of one-dimensional Mott insulator at high temperatures. While in the nonintegrable model the nonequilibrium conditions can be accounted by internal heating, the integrability leads to a strongly nonlinear dc response with vanishingly small dc conductivity in the linear--response regime. The finding is consistent with equilibrium results for dc limit of the optical conductivity determined in the presence of a weak and decreasing perturbation.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the Holstein polaron driven by external electric field

This work represents a fundamental study of a Holstein polaron in one dimension driven away from the ground state by a constant electric field. Taking fully into account quantum effects we follow the time-evolution of the system from its ground state as the constant electric field is switched on at t = 0, until it reaches a steady state. At weak electron phonon coupling (EP) the system experiences damped Bloch oscillations (BO) characteristic for noninteracting electron band. An analytic expression of the steady state current is proposed in terms of weak EP coupling and large electric field. For moderate values of EP coupling the oscillations are almost critically damped and the system reaches the steady state after a short time. In the strong coupling limit weakly damped BO, consistent with nearly adiabatic evolution within the polaron band, persist up to extremely large electric fields. A traveling polaron under the influence of the electric field leaves behind a trail of phonon excitations absorbing the excess energy gained from the electric field. The shape of the traveling polaron is investigated in details.

Nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of a charge carrier doped into a Mott insulator

We study real-time dynamics of a charge carrier introduced into undoped Mott insulator propagating under a constant electric field F on the t-J ladder and square lattice. We calculate quasistationary current. In both systems adiabatic regime is observed followed by the positive differential resistivity (PDR) at moderate fields where carrier mobility is determined. Quantitative differences between ladder and 2-dimensional (2D) system emerge when at large fields both systems enter negative differential resistivity (NDR) regime. In the ladder system Bloch-like oscillations prevail, while in 2D the current remains finite, proportional to 1/F. The crossover between PDR and NDR regime in 2D is accompanied by a change of the spatial structure of the propagating spin polaron.

Quantum Dynamics of a Driven Correlated System Coupled to Phonons

Nonequilibrium interplay between charge, spin and lattice degrees of freedom on a square lattice is studied for a single charge carrier doped in the t-J-Holstein model. In the presence of an uniform electric field we calculate the qusistationary state. With increasing electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling the carrier mobility decreases, however, we find increased steady state current due to e-ph coupling in the regime of negative differential resistance. We explore the distribution of absorbed energy between the spin and the phonon subsystem. For model parameters as relevant for cuprates, the majority of the gained energy flows into the spin subsystem.

The Kondo effect in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We study the temperature scale of the Kondo screening of a magnetic impurity which hybridizes with a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The problem is mapped to an effective single-band impurity model with a hybridization function having an inverse-square-root divergence at the bottom of the band. We study the effect of this divergence on the Kondo screening. The problem is solved numerically without further approximations using the numerical renormalization group technique. We find that the Rashba interaction leads to a small variation of the Kondo temperature (increase or decrease) which depends on the values of the impurity parameters.

Emergence of states in the phonon spectral function of the Holstein polaron below and above the one-phonon continuum

We investigate the low-energy properties of the Holstein polaron through calculation of the q-dependent phonon spectral function using an improved exact-diagonalization technique, defined over a variational Hilbert space. We perform a comprehensive study of the low-energy excitations of the polaron. Beside the energy range, where the additional phonon excitation is unbound, we observe separate coherent peaks which correspond to bound and antibound states of a polaron and additional phonon quanta. These novel states can be observed for intermediate and strong electron-phonon coupling strengths, as well as below and above the unbound one-phonon excitation spectrum. A detailed investigation of their properties is presented. We find good agreement between the phonon spectral function obtained from the first-order strong-coupling perturbation theory and numerical results.

Gain of the kinetic energy of bipolarons in the t-J-Holstein model based on electron-phonon coupling

With increasing electron-phonon coupling as described within the t-J-Holstein model, bipolaron kinetic energy is lowered in comparison with that of the polaron. This effect is accompanied with "undressing" of bipolaron from lattice degrees of freedom. Consequently, the effective bipolaron mass becomes smaller than the polaron mass. Magnetic as well as lattice degrees of freedom cooperatively contribute to formation of spin-lattice bipolarons.

Van Hove singularities in the paramagnetic phase of the Hubbard model: a DMFT study

Using the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) we study the paramagnetic phase of the Hubbard model with the density of states (DOS) corresponding to the three-dimensional cubic lattice and the two-dimensional square lattice, as well as a DOS with inverse square root singularity. We show that the electron correlations rapidly smooth out the square-root van Hove singularities (kinks) in the spectral function for the 3D lattice and that the Mott metal-insulator transition (MIT) as well as the magnetic-field-induced MIT differ only little from the well-known results for the Bethe lattice. The consequences of the logarithmic singularity in the DOS for the 2D lattice are more dramatic. At half filling, the divergence pinned at the Fermi level is not washed out, only its integrated weight decreases as the interaction is increased. While the Mott transition is still of the usual kind, the magnetic-field-induced MIT falls into a different universality class as there is no field-induced localization of quasiparticles. In the case of a power-law singularity in the DOS at the Fermi level, the power-law singularity persists in the presence of interaction, albeit with a different exponent, and the effective impurity model in the DMFT turns out to be a pseudo-gap Anderson impurity model with a hybridization function which vanishes at the Fermi level. The system is then a generalized Fermi liquid. At finite doping, regular Fermi liquid behavior is recovered.
