Conditionally positive definiteness in operator theory

In this paper we extensively investigate the class of conditionally positive definite operators, namely operators generating conditionally positive definite sequences. This class itself contains subnormal operators, $2$- and $3$-isometries and much more beyond them. Quite a large part of the paper is devoted to the study of conditionally positive definite sequences of exponential growth with emphasis put on finding criteria for their positive definiteness, where both notions are understood in the semigroup sense. As a consequence, we obtain semispectral and dilation type representations for conditionally positive definite operators. We also show that the class of conditionally positive definite operators is closed under the operation of taking powers. On the basis of Agler's hereditary functional calculus, we build an $L^{\infty}(M)$-functional calculus for operators of this class, where $M$ is an associated semispectral measure. We provide a variety of applications of this calculus to inequalities involving polynomials and analytic functions. In addition, we derive new necessary and sufficient conditions for a conditionally positive definite operator to be a subnormal contraction (including a telescopic one).

Algebraic sets of types A, B, and C coincide

It is proved that the definition of an algebraic set of type ${\sf A}$ (a notion related to the multidimensional Hamburger moment problem) does not depend on the choice of a polynomial describing the algebraic set in question and that an algebraic set of type ${\sf B}$ is always of type ${\sf A}$. This answers in the affirmative two questions posed in 1992 by the second author. It is also shown that an algebraic set is of type ${\sf A}$ if and only if it is of type ${\sf C}$ (a notion linked to orthogonality of polynomials of several variables). This, in turn, enables us to answer three questions posed in 2005 by Cichoń, Stochel, and Szafraniec.

Composition operators on Hilbert spaces of entire functions with analytic symbols

Composition operators with analytic symbols on some reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of entire functions on a complex Hilbert space are studied. The questions of their boundedness, seminormality and positivity are investigated. It is proved that if such an operator is bounded, then its symbol is a polynomial of degree at most 1, i.e., it is an affine mapping. Fock's type model for composition operators with linear symbols is established. As a consequence, explicit formulas for their polar decomposition, Aluthge transform and powers with positive real exponents are provided. The theorem of Carswell, MacCluer and Schuster is generalized to the case of Segal-Bargmann spaces of infinite order. Some related questions are also discussed.

Subnormality of unbounded composition operators over one-circuit directed graphs: exotic examples

A recent example of a non-hyponormal injective composition operator in an $L^2$-space generating Stieltjes moment sequences, invented by three of the present authors, was built over a non-locally finite directed tree. The main goal of this paper is to solve the problem of whether there exists such an operator over a locally finite directed graph and, in the affirmative case, to find the simplest possible graph with these properties (simplicity refers to local valency). The problem is solved affirmatively for the locally finite directed graph $\mathscr G_{2,0}$, which consists of two branches and one loop. The only simpler directed graph for which the problem remains unsolved consists of one branch and one loop. The consistency condition, the only efficient tool for verifying subnormality of unbounded composition operators, is intensively studied in the context of $\mathscr G_{2,0}$, which leads to a constructive method of solving the problem. The method itself is partly based on transforming the Krein and the Friedrichs measures coming either from shifted Al-Salam-Carlitz $q$-polynomials or from a quartic birth and death process.

Subnormal weighted shifts on directed trees and composition operators in $L^2$ spaces with non-densely defined powers

It is shown that for every positive integer $n$ there exists a subnormal weighted shift on a directed tree (with or without root) whose $n$th power is densely defined while its $(n+1)$th power is not. As a consequence, for every positive integer $n$ there exists a non-symmetric subnormal composition operator $C$ in an $L^2$ space over a $σ$-finite measure space such that $C^n$ is densely defined and $C^{n+1}$ is not.

Unbounded Subnormal Composition Operators in L2-Spaces

A criterion for subnormality of unbounded composition operators in L2-spaces, written in terms of measurable families of probability measures satisfying the so-called consistency condition, is established. It becomes a new characterization of subnormality in the case of bounded composition operators. Pseudo-moments of a measurable family of probability measures that satisfies the consistency condition are proved to be given by the Radon-Nikodym derivatives which appear in Lambert's characterization of bounded composition operators. A criterion for subnormality of composition operators induced by matrices is provided. The question of subnormality of composition operators over discrete measure spaces is studied. Two new classes of subnormal composition operators over discrete measure spaces are introduced. A recent criterion for subnormality of weighted shifts on directed trees by the present authors is essentially improved in the case of rootless directed trees and nonzero weights by dropping the assumption of density of C\infty-vectors in the underlying L2-space.

On Unbounded Composition Operators in $L^2$-Spaces

Fundamental properties of unbounded composition operators in $L^2$-spaces are studied. Characterizations of normal and quasinormal composition operators are provided. Formally normal composition operators are shown to be normal. Composition operators generating Stieltjes moment sequences are completely characterized. The unbounded counterparts of the celebrated Lambert's characterizations of subnormality of bounded composition operators are shown to be false. Various illustrative examples are supplied.

Operators with absolute continuity properties: an application to quasinormality

An absolute continuity approach to quasinormality which relates the operator in question to the spectral measure of its modulus is developed. Algebraic characterizations of some classes of operators that emerged in this context are invented. Various examples and counterexamples illustrating the concepts of the paper are constructed by means of weighted shifts on directed trees. Generalizations of these results that cover the case of q-quasinormal operators are established.

Unbounded subnormal weighted shifts on directed trees

A new method of verifying the subnormality of unbounded Hilbert space operators based on an approximation technique is proposed. Diverse sufficient conditions for subnormality of unbounded weighted shifts on directed trees are established. An approach to this issue via consistent systems of probability measures is invented. The role played by determinate Stieltjes moment sequences is elucidated. Lambert's characterization of subnormality of bounded operators is shown to be valid for unbounded weighted shifts on directed trees that have sufficiently many quasi-analytic vectors, which is a new phenomenon in this area. The cases of classical weighted shifts and weighted shifts on leafless directed trees with one branching vertex are studied.

Weighted shifts on directed trees

A new class of (not necessarily bounded) operators related to (mainly infinite) directed trees is introduced and investigated. Operators in question are to be considered as a generalization of classical weighted shifts, on the one hand, and of weighted adjacency operators, on the other; they are called weighted shifts on directed trees. The basic properties of such operators, including closedness, adjoints, polar decomposition and moduli are studied. Circularity and the Fredholmness of weighted shifts on directed trees are discussed. The relationships between domains of a weighted shift on a directed tree and its adjoint are described. Hyponormality, cohyponormality, subnormality and complete hyperexpansivity of such operators are entirely characterized in terms of their weights. Related questions that arose during the study of the topic are solved as well. Particular trees with one branching vertex are intensively studied mostly in the context of subnormality and complete hyperexpansivity of weighted shifts on them. A strict connection of the latter with $k$-step backward extendibility of subnormal as well as completely hyperexpansive unilateral classical weighted shifts is established. Models of subnormal and completely hyperexpansive weighted shifts on these particular trees are constructed. Various illustrative examples of weighted shifts on directed trees with the prescribed properties are furnished. Many of them are simpler than those previously found on occasion of investigating analogical properties of other classes of operators.
