Quantum correlation and entanglement between an ionizing system and a neighbor atom interacting directly and via a quantized field

Quantum correlations between two neighbor atoms are studied. It is assumed that one atomic system comprises a single auto-ionizing level and the other atom does not contain any auto-ionizing level. The excitation of both atoms is achieved by the interaction with the same mode of the quantized field. It is shown that the long-time behavior of two atoms exhibits quantum correlations even when the atoms do not interact directly. This can be shown using the optical excitation of the neighbor atom. Also a measure of entanglement of two atoms can be applied after reduction of the continuum to two levels.

High spatial entanglement via chirped quasi-phase-matched optical parametric down-conversion

By making use of the spatial shape of paired photons, parametric down-conversion allows the generation of two-photon entanglement in a multidimensional Hilbert space. How much entanglement can be generated in this way? In principle, the infinite-dimensional nature of the spatial degree of freedom renders unbounded the amount of entanglement available. However, in practice, the specific configuration used, namely its geometry, the length of the nonlinear crystal and the size of the pump beam, can severely limit the value that could be achieved. Here we show that the use of quasi-phase-matching engineering allows to increase the amount of entanglement generated, reaching values of tens of ebits of entropy of entanglement under different conditions. Our work thus opens a way to fulfill the promise of generating massive spatial entanglement under a diverse variety of circumstances, some more favorable for its experimental implementation.

Spatial and spectral properties of the pulsed second-harmonic generation in a PP-KTP waveguide

Spatial and spectral properties of the pulsed second harmonic generation in a periodically-poled KTP waveguide exploiting simultaneously the first, second, and third harmonics of periodic nonlinear modulation are analyzed. Experimental results are interpreted using a model based on finite elements method. Correlations between spatial and spectral properties of the fundamental and second-harmonic fields are revealed. Individual nonlinear processes can be exploited combining spatial and spectral filtering. Also the influence of waveguide parameters to the second-harmonic spectra is addressed.

Photon-number entangled states generated in Kerr media with optical parametric pumping

Two nonlinear Kerr oscillators mutually coupled by parametric pumping are studied as a source of states entangled in photon numbers. Temporal evolution of entanglement quantified by negativity shows the effects of sudden death and birth of entanglement. Entanglement is preserved even in asymptotic states under certain conditions. The role of reservoirs at finite temperature in entanglement evolution is elucidated. Relation between generation of entangled states and violation of Cauchy-Schwartz inequality for oscillator intensities is found.

Intense ultra-broadband down-conversion from randomly poled nonlinear crystals

Randomly poled nonlinear crystals are shown to be able to emit intense ultra-broadband photon-pair fields with properties comparable to those coming from chirped periodically-poled crystals. Their intensities scale linearly with the number of domains. Also photon pairs extending over intervals with durations comparable to one optical cycle can be generated in these crystals.
