Interplay between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in a non-degenerate hyper-Raman nonlinear optical coupler

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are studied in an asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler composed of a probe waveguide and a system waveguide. The system is a nonlinear waveguide operating under non-degenerate hyper-Raman process, while both the pump modes in the system are constantly interacting with the probe waveguide. The effect of the presence of probe on the temporal evolution of the system in terms of the number of photons in Stokes and anti-Stokes modes as well as phonon number is quantified as Zeno parameter. The negative (positive) values of the Zeno parameter in the specific mode are considered as the signatures of the quantum Zeno (anti-Zeno)effect in that mode of the system. It is observed that the phase mismatch in Stokes and anti-Stokes generation processes can be controlled to induce a transition between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects for both off-resonant and resonant hyper-Raman process. However, in case of off-resonant hyper-Raman process in the system waveguide, the frequency detuning parameters can also be used analogously to cause the desired crossover. Further, the general nature of the physical system and the perturbative technique used here allowed us to analytically study the possibilities of observing quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in a large number of special cases, including situations where the process is spontaneous, partially spontaneous and/or the system is operated under degenerate hyper-Raman process, or a simple Raman process.

Quasidistribution of phases in Raman process with weak and strong pumps

Nonclassicality is studied through a quasidistribution of phases for the Raman process under both weak and strong pump conditions. In the former case, the solution is applicable to both resonant and off-resonant Raman processes, while strong classical pump is assumed at resonance. Under weak pump conditions (i.e., in a complete quantum treatment), the phase difference of phases described by single nonclassical modes is required to be filtered to describe a regular distribution function, which is not the case with strong pump. Compound Stokes-phonon mode shows nonclassical features of phases in both weak and strong pumping, which effect is similar to that for compound pump-phonon (Stokes-anti-Stokes) mode with weak (strong) pump. While anti-Stokes-phonon mode is observed to be classical and coherence conserving in strong pump case, pump-Stokes mode shows similar behavior in a special case in quantum treatment.

Comparative study of nonclassicality, entanglement, and dimensionality of multimode noisy twin beams

Nonclassicality, entanglement, as well as dimensionality of a noisy twin beam are determined using characteristic function of the beam written in the Fock basis. One-to-one correspondence between the negativity quantifying entanglement and the nonclassicality depth is revealed. Twin beams, which are either entangled or nonclassical (independent of their entanglement), are observed only for the limited degrees of noise that degrades their quantumness. Dimensionality of the twin beam quantified by the participation ratio is compared with the dimensionality of entanglement determined from the negativity. The partition of the degrees of freedom of the twin beam into those related to entanglement and to noise is suggested. Both single-mode and multimode twin beams are analyzed. Weak nonclassicality based on integrated-intensity quasidistributions of multimode twin beams is studied. Relation of the model to the experimental twin beams is discussed.

Linear and nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in a nonlinear optical coupler

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are studied in a symmetric nonlinear optical coupler, which is composed of two nonlinear ($χ^{\left(2\right)}$) waveguides that are interacting with each other via the evanescent waves. Both the waveguides operate under second harmonic generation. However, to study quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects one of them is considered as the system and the other one is considered as the probe. Considering all the fields involved as weak, a completely quantum mechanical description is provided, and the analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for all the field modes are obtained using a perturbative technique. Photon number statistics of the second harmonic mode of the system is shown to depend on the presence of the probe, and this dependence is considered as quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects. Further, it is established that as a special case of the momentum operator for $χ^{\left(2\right)}-χ^{\left(2\right)}$ symmetric coupler we can obtain momentum operator of $χ^{\left(2\right)}-χ^{\left(1\right)}$ asymmetric coupler with linear ($χ^{\left(1\right)}$) waveguide as the probe, and in such a particular case, the expressions obtained for Zeno and anti-Zeno effects with nonlinear probe (which we referred to as nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects) may be reduced to the corresponding expressions with linear probe (which we referred to as the linear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects). Linear and nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are rigorously investigated, and it is established that in the stimulated case, we may switch between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects just by controlling the phase of the second harmonic mode of the system or probe.

Higher order nonclassicalities in a codirectional nonlinear optical coupler: Quantum entanglement, squeezing and antibunching

Higher order nonclassical properties of fields propagating through a codirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler which is prepared by combining a linear wave guide and a nonlinear (quadratic) wave guide operated by second harmonic generation are studied. A completely quantum mechanical description is used here to describe the system. Closed form analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various modes are used to show the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing, higher order two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler. It is also shown that nonclassical properties of light can transfer from a nonlinear wave guide to a linear wave guide.

Nonclassical properties of a contradirectional nonlinear optical coupler

We investigate the nonclassical properties of output fields propagated through a contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler consisting of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear (quadratic) waveguide operated by second harmonic generation. In contrast to the earlier results, all the initial fields are considered weak and a completely quantum mechanical model is used here to describe the system. Perturbative solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for various field modes are obtained using Sen-Mandal technique. Obtained solutions are subsequently used to show the existence of single-mode and intermodal squeezing, single-mode and intermodal antibunching, two-mode and multi-mode entanglement in the output of contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear optical coupler. Further, existence of higher order nonclassicality is also established by showing the existence of higher order antibunching, higher order squeezing and higher order entanglement. Variation of observed nonclassical characters with different coupling constants and phase mismatch is discussed.

Relation between squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, quantum entanglement and sub-shot noise in Raman scattering

A completely quantum description of Raman process is used to investigate the nonclassical properties of the modes in the stimulated, spontaneous and partially spontaneous Raman process. Both coherent scattering (where all the initial modes are coherent) and chaotic scattering (where initial phonon mode is chaotic and all the other modes are coherent) are studied. Nonclassical character of Raman process is observed by means of intermodal entanglement, single mode and intermodal squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, sub-shot noise and wave variances. Joint photon-phonon number and integrated-intensity distributions are then used to illustrate the observed nonclassicalities. Conditional and difference number distributions are also provided to illustrate the nonclassical character. The mutual relation between the obtained nonclassicalities and their variations dependent on phases, rescalled time and ratio of coupling constants are also reported.

Correlations in photon-numbers and integrated intensities in parametric processes involving three optical fields

Two strongly-pumped parametric interactions are simultaneously realized in a single nonlinear crystal in order to generate three strongly correlated optical fields. By combining together the outputs of two of the three detectors measuring intensities of the generated fields, we obtain the joint photocount statistics between the single field and the sum of the other two. Moreover, we develop a microscopic quantum theory to determine the joint photon-number distribution and the joint quasi-distributions of integrated intensities and prove nonclassical nature of the three-mode state. Finally, by performing a conditional measurement on the single field, we obtain a state endowed with a sub-Poissonian statistics, as testified by the analysis of the conditional Fano factor. The role of quantum detection efficiencies in this conditional state-preparation method is discussed in detail.

Higher-order squeezing for the codirectional Kerr nonlinear coupler

In this Letter we study the evolution of the higher-order squeezing, namely, $n$th-order single-mode squeezing, sum- and difference-squeezing for the codirectional Kerr nonlinear coupler. We show that the amount of squeezing decreases when $n$, i.e. the squeezing order, increases. For specific values of the interaction parameters squeezing factors exhibit a series of revival-collapse phenomena, which become more pronounced when the value of $n$ increases. Sum-squeezing can provide amounts of squeezing greater than those produced by the $n$th higher-order ($n\geq 2$) squeezing for the same values of interaction parameters and can map onto amplitude-squared squeezing. Further, we prove that the difference-squeezing is not relevant measure for obtaining information about squeezing from this device.

Quantum properties of the codirectional three-mode Kerr nonlinear coupler

We investigate the quantum properties for the codirectional three-mode Kerr nonlinear coupler. We investigate single-, two- and three-mode quadrature squeezing, Wigner function and purity. We prove that this device can provide richer nonclassical effects than those produced by the conventional coupler, i.e. the two-mode Kerr coupler. We show that it can provide squeezing and the quadrature squeezing exhibiting leaf-revival-collapse phenomenon in dependence on the values of the interaction parameters. In contrast to the conventional Kerr coupler two different forms of cat states can be simultaneously generated in the waveguides. We deduce conditions required for the complete disentanglement between the components of the system.

Quantum dynamics and statistics of two coupled down-conversion processes

In the framework of Heisenberg-Langevin theory the dynamical and statistical effects arising from the linear interaction of two nondegenerate down-conversion processes are investigated. Using the strong-pumping approximation the analytical solution of equations of motion is calculated. The phenomena reminiscent of Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are examined. The possibility of phase-controlled and mismatch-controlled switching is illustrated.
