Cutting and gluing with running couplings in $\mathcal{N}=2$ QCD

We consider the order parameter $u=\left<{\rm Tr}ϕ^2\right>$ as function of the running coupling constant $τ\in \mathbb{H}$ of asymptotically free $\mathcal{N}=2$ QCD with gauge group $SU(2)$ and $N_f\leq 3$ massive hypermultiplets. If the domain for $τ$ is restricted to an appropriate fundamental domain $\mathcal{F}_{N_f}$, the function $u$ is one-to-one. We demonstrate that these domains consist of six or less images of an ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ keyhole fundamental domain, with appropriate identifications of the boundaries. For special choices of the masses, $u$ does not give rise to branch points and cuts, such that $u$ is a modular function for a congruence subgroup $Γ$ of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and the fundamental domain is $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$. For generic masses, however, branch points and cuts are present, and subsets of $\mathcal{F}_{N_f}$ are being cut and glued upon varying the mass. We study this mechanism for various phenomena, such as decoupling of hypermultiplets, merging of local singularities, as well as merging of non-local singularities which give rise to superconformal Argyres-Douglas theories.

Four flavours, triality and bimodular forms

We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $\text{SU}(2)$ gauge theory with $N_f=4$ massive hypermultiplets. The duality group of this theory contains transformations acting on the UV-coupling $τ_{\text{UV}}$ as well as on the running coupling $τ$. We establish that subgroups of the duality group act separately on $τ_{\text{UV}}$ and $τ$, while a larger group acts simultaneously on $τ_{\text{UV}}$ and $τ$. For special choices of the masses, we find that the duality groups can be identified with congruence subgroups of $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. We demonstrate that in such cases, the order parameters are instances of bimodular forms with arguments $τ$ and $τ_{\text{UV}}$. Since the UV duality group of the theory contains the triality group of outer automorphisms of the flavour symmetry $\text{SO}(8)$, the duality action gives rise to an orbit of mass configurations. Consequently, the corresponding order parameters combine to vector-valued bimodular forms with $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$ acting simultaneously on the two couplings.

Scaling Black Holes and Modularity

Scaling black holes are solutions of supergravity with multiple black hole singularities, which can be adiabatically connected to a single center black hole solution. We develop techniques to determine partition functions for such scaling black holes, if each constituent carries a non-vanishing magnetic charge corresponding to a D4-brane in string theory, or equivalently M5-brane in M-theory. For three constituents, we demonstrate that the partition function is a mock modular form of depth two, and we determine the appropriate non-holomorphic completion using generalized error functions. From the four-dimensional perspective, the modular parameter is the axion-dilaton, and our results show that $S$-duality leaves this subset of the spectrum invariant. From the five-dimensional perspective, the modular parameter is the complex structure of a torus $T^2$, and the scaling black holes are dual to states in the dimensional reduction of the M5-brane worldvolume theory to $T^2$. As a case study, we specialize the compactification manifold to a K3 fibration, and explicitly evaluate holomorphic parts of partition functions.

Effective gravitational couplings of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories

The low energy effective couplings of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory to topological invariants of the background gravitational field are described by two functions $A$ and $B$. These two functions play an important role in the study of topologically twisted four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and in the computation of central charges of $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal theories. In this paper, we compute $A$ and $B$ from the partition function in the $Ω$-background for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ gauge theories. Our results not only confirm the predicted expressions of the effective gravitational couplings, but also give the previously undetermined overall multiplicative factors. We also analyze $A$ and $B$ for the $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory, and confirm all the previous predictions.

Sheaves on P2 and generalized Appell functions

A closed expression is given for the generating function of (virtual) Poincaré polynomials of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves on the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$ with arbitrary rank $r$ and Chern classes. This generating function is known to equal the partition function of topologically twisted gauge theory with $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry and gauge group $U(r)$, which localizes on the Hermitian Yang-Mills solutions of the gauge field. To classify and study the novel generating functions, the notion of Appell functions with signature $(n_+,n_-)$ is introduced. For $n_-=1$, these novel functions reduce to the known class of Appell functions with multiple variables or higher level.

Identities for generalized Appell functions and the blow-up formula

In this paper, we prove identities for a class of generalized Appell functions which are based on the $\operatorname{A}_2$ root lattice. The identities are reminiscent of periodicity relations for the classical Appell function, and are proven using only analytic properties of the functions. Moreover they are a consequence of the blow-up formula for generating functions of invariants of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves of rank 3 on rational surfaces. Our proof confirms that in the latter context, different routes to compute the generating function (using the blow-up formula and wall-crossing) do arrive at identical $q$-series. The proof also gives a clear procedure for how to prove analogous identities for generalized Appell functions appearing in generating functions for sheaves with rank $r>3$.

Quantum hypermultiplet moduli spaces in N=2 string vacua: a review

The hypermultiplet moduli space M_H in type II string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold X is largely constrained by supersymmetry (which demands quaternion-Kählerity), S-duality (which requires an isometric action of SL(2, Z)) and regularity. Mathematically, M_H ought to encode all generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants on X consistently with wall-crossing, modularity and homological mirror symmetry. We review recent progress towards computing the exact metric on M_H, or rather the exact complex contact structure on its twistor space.

The asymptotic profile of $χ_y$-genera of Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces

The Hodge numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on algebraic surfaces are given by Göttsche's formula, which expresses the generating functions of the Hodge numbers in terms of theta and eta functions. We specialize in this paper to generating functions of the $χ_y(\mathrm{K3}^{[n]})$ genera of Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on K3 surfaces. We determine asymptotic values of the coefficients of the $χ_y$-genus for $n\to \infty$ as well as their asymptotic profile.

Asymptotic formulas for coefficients of inverse theta functions

We determine asymptotic formulas for the coefficients of a natural class of negative index and negative weight Jacobi forms. These coefficients can be viewed as a refinement of the numbers $p_k(n)$ of partitions of n into k colors. Part of the motivation for this work is that they are equal to the Betti numbers of the Hilbert scheme of points on an algebraic surface S and appear also as counts of Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) states in physics.

A 5d/2d/4d correspondence

We propose a correspondence between two-dimensional (0,4) sigma models with target space the moduli spaces of r monopoles, and four-dimensional N=4, U(r) Yang-Mills theory on del Pezzo surfaces. In particular, the two- and four-dimensional BPS partition functions are argued to be equal. The correspondence relies on insights from five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory and its geometric engineering in M-theory, hence the name "5d/2d/4d correspondence". We provide various tests of our proposal. The most stringent ones are for r=1, for which we prove the equality of partition functions.

BPS invariants of semi-stable sheaves on rational surfaces

BPS invariants are computed, capturing topological invariants of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves on rational surfaces. For a suitable stability condition, it is proposed that the generating function of BPS invariants of a Hirzebruch surface takes the form of a product formula. BPS invariants for other stability conditions and other rational surfaces are obtained using Harder-Narasimhan filtrations and the blow-up formula. Explicit expressions are given for rank <4 sheaves on a Hirzebruch surface or the projective plane. The applied techniques can be applied iteratively to compute invariants for higher rank.

From Black Holes to Quivers

Middle cohomology states on the Higgs branch of supersymmetric quiver quantum mechanics - also known as pure Higgs states - have recently emerged as possible microscopic candidates for single-centered black hole micro-states, as they carry zero angular momentum and appear to be robust under wall-crossing. Using the connection between quiver quantum mechanics on the Coulomb branch and the quantum mechanics of multi-centered black holes, we propose a general algorithm for reconstructing the full moduli-dependent cohomology of the moduli space of an arbitrary quiver, in terms of the BPS invariants of the pure Higgs states. We analyze many examples of quivers with loops, including all cyclic Abelian quivers and several examples with two loops or non-Abelian gauge groups, and provide supporting evidence for this proposal. We also develop methods to count pure Higgs states directly.

Generalized quiver mutations and single-centered indices

Quiver quantum mechanics is invariant under Seiberg duality. A mathematical consequence is that the cohomology of the Higgs branch moduli space is invariant under mutations of the quiver. The Coulomb branch formula, on the other hand, conjecturally expresses the Poincaré / Dolbeault polynomial of the Higgs branch moduli space in terms of certain quantities known as single-centered indices. In this work we determine the transformations of these single-centered indices under mutations. Moreover, we generalize these mutations to quivers whose nodes carry single-centered indices different from unity. Although the Higgs branch description of these generalized quivers is currently unknown, the Coulomb branch formula is conjectured to be invariant under generalized mutations.

Geometric engineering of (framed) BPS states

BPS quivers for N=2 SU(N) gauge theories are derived via geometric engineering from derived categories of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. While the outcome is in agreement of previous low energy constructions, the geometric approach leads to several new results. An absence of walls conjecture is formulated for all values of N, relating the field theory BPS spectrum to large radius D-brane bound states. Supporting evidence is presented as explicit computations of BPS degeneracies in some examples. These computations also prove the existence of BPS states of arbitrarily high spin and infinitely many marginal stability walls at weak coupling. Moreover, framed quiver models for framed BPS states are naturally derived from this formalism, as well as a mathematical formulation of framed and unframed BPS degeneracies in terms of motivic and cohomological Donaldson-Thomas invariants. We verify the conjectured absence of BPS states with "exotic" SU(2)_R quantum numbers using motivic DT invariants. This application is based in particular on a complete recursive algorithm which determine the unframed BPS spectrum at any point on the Coulomb branch in terms of noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for framed quiver representations.

On the Coulomb and Higgs branch formulae for multi-centered black holes and quiver invariants

In previous work we have shown that the equivariant index of multi-centered N=2 black holes localizes on collinear configurations along a fixed axis. Here we provide a general algorithm for enumerating such collinear configurations and computing their contribution to the index. We apply this machinery to the case of black holes described by quiver quantum mechanics, and give a systematic prescription -- the Coulomb branch formula -- for computing the cohomology of the moduli space of quiver representations. For quivers without oriented loops, the Coulomb branch formula is shown to agree with the Higgs branch formula based on Reineke's result for stack invariants, even when the dimension vector is not primitive. For quivers with oriented loops, the Coulomb branch formula parametrizes the Poincaré polynomial of the quiver moduli space in terms of single-centered (or pure-Higgs) BPS invariants, which are conjecturally independent of the stability condition (i.e. the choice of Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters) and angular-momentum free. To facilitate further investigation we provide a Mathematica package "CoulombHiggs.m" implementing the Coulomb and Higgs branch formulae.

A fixed point formula for the index of multi-centered N=2 black holes

We propose a formula for computing the (moduli-dependent) contribution of multi-centered solutions to the total BPS index in terms of the (moduli-independent) indices associated to single-centered solutions. The main tool in our analysis is the computation of the refined index Tr(-y)^{2J_3} of configurational degrees of freedom of multi-centered BPS black hole solutions in N=2 supergravity by localization methods. When the charges carried by the centers do not allow for scaling solutions (i.e. solutions where a subset of the centers can come arbitrarily close to each other), the phase space of classical BPS solutions is compact and the refined index localizes to a finite set of isolated fixed points under rotations, corresponding to collinear solutions. When the charges allow for scaling solutions, the phase space is non-compact but appears to admit a compactification with finite volume and additional non-isolated fixed points. We give a prescription for determining the contributions of these fixed submanifolds by means of a `minimal modification hypothesis', which we prove in the special case of dipole halo configurations.

BPS invariants of N=4 gauge theory on a surface

Generating functions of BPS invariants for N=4 U(r) gauge theory on a Hirzebruch surface with r=2 and 3 are computed. The BPS invariants provide the Betti numbers of moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves. The generating functions for r=2 are expressed in terms of higher level Appell functions for a certain polarization of the surface. The level corresponds to the self-intersection of the base curve of the Hirzebruch surface. The non-holomorphic functions are determined, which added to the holomorphic generating functions provide functions which transform as a modular form.

From sheaves on P2 to a generalization of the Rademacher expansion

Moduli spaces of stable coherent sheaves on a surface are of much interest for both mathematics and physics. Yoshioka computed generating functions of Poincare polynomials of such moduli spaces if the surface is the projective plane P2 and the rank of the sheaves is 2. Motivated by physical arguments, this paper investigates the modular properties of these generating functions. It is shown that these functions can be written in terms of the Lerch sum and theta function. Based on this, we prove a conjecture by Vafa and Witten, which expresses the generating functions of Euler numbers as a mixed mock modular form. Moreover, we derive an exact formula for the Fourier coefficients of this function, which is similar to the Rademacher expansion for weakly holomorphic modular forms but is more complicated. This is the first example of an exact formula for the Fourier coefficients of mixed mock modular forms, which is of independent mathematical interest.

The Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable sheaves of rank 3 on P2

This article computes the generating functions of the Betti numbers of the moduli space of stable sheaves of rank 3 on the projective plane P2 and its blow-up. Wall-crossing is used to obtain the Betti numbers on the blow-up. These can be derived equivalently using flow trees, which appear in the physics of BPS-states. The Betti numbers for P2 follow from those for the blow-up by the blow-up formula. The generating functions are expressed in terms of modular functions and indefinite theta functions.

Wall-Crossing from Boltzmann Black Hole Halos

A key question in the study of N=2 supersymmetric string or field theories is to understand the decay of BPS bound states across walls of marginal stability in the space of parameters or vacua. By representing the potentially unstable bound states as multi-centered black hole solutions in N=2 supergravity, we provide two fully general and explicit formulae for the change in the (refined) index across the wall. The first, "Higgs branch" formula relies on Reineke's results for invariants of quivers without oriented loops, specialized to the Abelian case. The second, "Coulomb branch" formula results from evaluating the symplectic volume of the classical phase space of multi-centered solutions by localization. We provide extensive evidence that these new formulae agree with each other and with the mathematical results of Kontsevich and Soibelman (KS) and Joyce and Song (JS). The main physical insight behind our results is that the Bose-Fermi statistics of individual black holes participating in the bound state can be traded for Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics, provided the (integer) index Ω(γ) of the internal degrees of freedom carried by each black hole is replaced by an effective (rational) index \barΩ(γ)= \sum_{m|γ} Ω(γ/m)/m^2. A similar map also exists for the refined index. This observation provides a physical rationale for the appearance of the rational Donaldson-Thomas invariant \barΩ(γ) in the works of KS and JS. The simplicity of the wall crossing formula for rational invariants allows us to generalize the "semi-primitive wall-crossing formula" to arbitrary decays of the type γ\to Mγ_1+Nγ_2 with M=2,3.

A Modern Fareytail

We revisit the "fareytail expansions" of elliptic genera which have been used in discussions of the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence and the OSV conjecture. We show how to write such expansions without the use of the problematic "fareytail transform." In particular, we show how to write a general vector-valued modular form of non-positive weight as a convergent sum over cosets of SL(2,Z). This sum suggests a new regularization of the gravity path integral in AdS_3, resolves the puzzles associated with the "fareytail transform," and leads to several new insights. We discuss constraints on the polar coefficients of negative weight modular forms arising from modular invariance, showing how these are related to Fourier coefficients of positive weight cusp forms. In addition, we discuss the appearance of holomorphic anomalies in the context of the fareytail.

Stability and duality in N=2 supergravity

The BPS-spectrum is known to change when moduli cross a wall of marginal stability. This paper tests the compatibility of wall-crossing with S-duality and electric-magnetic duality for N=2 supergravity. To this end, the BPS-spectrum of D4-D2-D0 branes is analyzed in the large volume limit of Calabi-Yau moduli space. Partition functions are presented, which capture the stability of BPS-states corresponding to two constituents with primitive charges and supported on very ample divisors in a compact Calabi-Yau. These functions are `mock modular invariant' and therefore confirm S-duality. Furthermore, wall-crossing preserves electric-magnetic duality, but is shown to break the `spectral flow' symmetry of the N=(4,0) CFT, which captures the degrees of freedom of a single constituent.

preprint2010arXiv

Wall-crossing of D4-branes using flow trees

The moduli dependence of D4-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold is studied using attractor flow trees, in the large volume limit of the Kahler cone. One of the moduli dependent existence criteria of flow trees is the positivity of the flow parameters along its edges. It is shown that the sign of the flow parameters can be determined iteratively as function of the initial moduli, without explicit calculation of the flow of the moduli in the tree. Using this result, an indefinite quadratic form, which appears in the expression for the D4-D2-D0 BPS mass in the large volume limit, is proven to be positive definite for flow trees with 3 or less endpoints. The contribution of these flow trees to the BPS partition function is therefore convergent. From non-primitive wall-crossing is deduced that the S-duality invariant partition function must be a generating function of rational, multi-covering invariants instead of integer invariants.
