Extended Hubbard model with renormalized Wannier wave functions in the correlated state III: Statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation and the metallization of atomic solid hydrogen

We extend our previous approach (Eur. Phys. J. B, \textbf{74}, 63(2010)) to modeling correlated electronic states and the metal-insulator transition by applying the so-called \emph{statistically consistent Gutzwiller approximation} (SGA) to carry out self-consistent calculations of the renormalized single-particle Wannier functions in the correlated state. The transition to the Mott-Hubbard insulating state at temperature T=0 is of weak first order even if antiferromagnetism is disregarded. The magnitude of the introduced self-consistent magnetic correlation field is calculated and shown to lead to a small magnetic moment in the magnetically uniform state. Realistic value of the applied magnetic field has a minor influence on the metallic-state characteristics near the Mott-Hubbard lcalization threshold. The whole analysis has been carried out for an extended Hubbard model on a simple cubic (SC) lattice and the evolution of physical properties is analyzed as a function of the lattice parameter for the renormalized 1s-type Wannier functions. Quantum critical scaling of the selected physical properties is analyzed as a function of the lattice constant $R\rightarrow R_c=4.1 a_0$, where $R_c$ is the critical value for metal-insulator transition and $a_0=0.53 Å$ is the Bohr radius. A critical pressure for metallization of solid atomic hydrogen is estimated and is $\sim 10^2 GPa$.

Extended Hubbard model with renormalized Wannier wave functions in the correlated state II: Quantum critical scaling of the wave function near the Mott-Hubbard transition

We present a model example of a quantum critical behavior of renormalized single-particle Wannier function composed of Slater s-orbitals and represented in an adjustable Gaussian STO-7G basis, which is calculated for cubic lattices in the Gutzwiller correlated state near the metal-insulator transition (MIT). The discussion is carried out within the extended Hubbard model and the method of approach proposed earlier [cf. Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf 66}, 385 (2008)]. The component atomic-wave-function size, the Wannier function maximum, as well as the system energy, all scale with the increasing lattice parameter $R$ as $[(R-R_{c})/R_{c}]^{s}$ with $s$ in the interval $[0.9,1.0]$. Such scaling law is interpreted as evidence of a dominant role of the interparticle Coulomb repulsion, which for $R>R_c$ is of intersite character. Relation of the insulator-metal transition lattice-parameter value $R=R_{c}$ to the original {\em Mott criterion} is also obtained. The method feasibility is tested by comparing our results with the exact approach for the Hubbard chain, for which the Mott-Hubbard transition is absent. In view of unique features of our results, an extensive discussion in qualitative terms is also provided.
