On the validity of the Euler-Lagrange system without growth assumptions

The constrained minimisers of convex integral functionals of the form F(v)=∫ΩF(∇kv(x))dx\mathscr F(v)=\int_ΩF(\nabla^k v(x))\mathrm d x defined on Sobolev mappings v∈Wgk,1(Ω,RN)∩Kv\in \mathrm W^{k,1}_g(Ω, \mathbb R^N )\cap K, where KK is a closed convex subset of the Dirichlet class Wgk,1(Ω,RN),\mathrm W^{k,1}_{g}(Ω, \mathbb R^N ), are characterised as the energy solutions to the Euler-Lagrange inequality for F\mathscr F. We assume that the essentially smooth integrand F ⁣:RN⊗⊙kRn→R∪{+∞}F\colon \mathbb R^{N} \otimes \odot^{k}\mathbb R^{n} \to \mathbb R\cup\{+\infty\} is convex, lower semi-continuous, proper and at least super-linear at infinity. In the unconstrained case K=Wgk,1(Ω,RN)K=\mathrm W^{k,1}_{g}(Ω, \mathbb R^N ), if the integrand FF is convex, real-valued, and satisfies a demi-coercivity condition, then ∫Ω ⁣F′(∇ku)⋅∇kϕ dx=0 \int_Ω \! F^{\prime}(\nabla^{k} u) \cdot \nabla^{k}ϕ\, \mathrm d x =0 holds for all ϕ∈W0k(Ω,RN)ϕ\in \mathrm W_{0}^{k}( Ω, \mathbb R^{N}), where ∇ku\nabla^{k} u is the absolutely continuous part of the vector measure DkuD^{k}u.

Automatic quasiconvexity of homogeneous isotropic rank-one convex integrands

We consider the class of non-negative rank-one convex isotropic integrands on Rn×n\mathbb{R}^{n\times n} which are also positively pp-homogeneous. If p≤n=2p \leq n = 2 we prove, conditional on the quasiconvexity of the Burkholder integrand, that the integrands in this class are quasiconvex at conformal matrices. If p≥n=2p \geq n = 2, we show that the positive part of the Burkholder integrand is polyconvex. In general, for p≥np \geq n, we prove that the integrands in the above class are polyconvex at conformal matrices. Several examples imply that our results are all nearly optimal.

On Rank-One Convex Functions that are homogeneous of Degree One

We show that positively 11--homogeneous rank one convex functions are convex at 00 and at matrices of rank one. The result is a special case of an abstract convexity result that we establish for positively 11--homogeneous directionally convex functions defined on an open convex cone in a finite dimensional vector space. From these results we derive a number of consequences including various generalizations of the Ornstein $\LL^1$ non inequalities. Most of the results were announced in ({\em C.~R.~Acad.~Sci.~Paris, Ser.~I 349 (2011), 407--409}).

On the Morse-Sard property and level sets of Wn,1W^{n,1} Sobolev functions on Rn{\mathbb R}^n

We establish Luzin N and Morse--Sard properties for functions from the Sobolev space Wn,1(Rn)W^{n,1}({\mathbb R}^{n}). Using these results we prove that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of C1C^1--smooth compact manifolds of dimension n−1n-1. These results remain valid also within the larger space of functions of bounded variation BVn(Rn)BV_{n}({\mathbb R}^{n}). For the proofs we establish and use some new results on Luzin--type approximation of Sobolev and BV--functions by CkC^k--functions, where the exceptional sets have small Hausdorff content.

Piecewise affine approximations for functions of bounded variation

BV functions cannot be approximated well by piecewise constant functions, but this work will show that a good approximation is still possible with (countably) piecewise affine functions. In particular, this approximation is area-strictly close to the original function and the L1\mathrm{L}^1-difference between the traces of the original and approximating functions on a substantial part of the mesh can be made arbitrarily small. Necessarily, the mesh needs to be adapted to the singularities of the BV function to be approximated, and consequently, the proof is based on a blow-up argument together with explicit constructions of the mesh. In the case of W1,1\mathrm{W}^{1,1}-Sobolev functions we establish an optimal W1,1\mathrm{W}^{1,1}-error estimate for approximation by piecewise affine functions on uniform regular triangulations. The piecewise affine functions are standard quasi-interpolants obtained by mollification and Lagrange interpolation on the nodes of triangulations, and the main new contribution here compared to for instance Clément (RAIRO Analyse Numérique 9 (1975), no.~R-2, 77--84) and Verfürth (M2AN Math.~Model.~Numer.~Anal. 33 (1999), no. 4, 695-713) is that our error estimates are in the W1,1\mathrm{W}^{1,1}-norm rather than merely the L1\mathrm{L}^1-norm.

Regularity of minimizers of autonomous convex variational integrals

We establish local higher integrability and differentiability results for minimizers of variational integrals F(v,Ω)=∫Ω/!F(Dv(x)) dx \mathfrak{F}(v,Ω) = \int_Ω /! F(Dv(x)) \, dx over W1,pW^{1,p}--Sobolev mappings u ⁣:Ω⊂Rn→RNu \colon Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^N satisfying a Dirichlet boundary condition. The integrands FF are assumed to be autonomous, convex and of (p,q)(p,q) growth, but are otherwise not subjected to any further structure conditions, and we consider exponents in the range 1<p≤q<p∗1<p \leq q < p^{\ast}, where p∗p^{\ast} denotes the Sobolev conjugate exponent of pp.

On the Morse-Sard Property and Level Sets of Sobolev and BV Functions

We establish Luzin NN and Morse-Sard properties for BV2BV_2-functions defined on open domains in the plane. Using these results we prove that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of Lipschitz arcs whose tangent vectors are of bounded variation. In the case of W2,1W^{2,1}-functions we strengthen the conclusion and show that almost all level sets are finite disjoint unions of C1C^1-arcs whose tangent vectors are absolutely continuous.
