GRASP: Learning to Ground Social Reasoning in Multi-Person Non-Verbal Interactions

Understanding social interactions requires reasoning over subtle non-verbal cues, yet current multimodal large language models (MLLMs) often fail to identify who interacts with whom in multi-person videos. We introduce GRASP, a large-scale social reasoning dataset that connects high-level social QA with fine-grained gaze and deictic gesture events. GRASP contains 290K question--answer pairs over 46K videos totaling 749 hours, organized by a 16-category taxonomy spanning gaze, gesture, and joint gaze--gesture reasoning, together with GRASP-Bench for evaluation. Unlike prior resources that focus on either isolated cues or high-level social QA, GRASP builds questions from identity-consistent gaze trajectories, deictic gestures, and their joint compositions into social events. Moreover, we propose Social Grounding Reward (SGR), a learning signal that uses these social events to encourage models to reason about the participants involved in each interaction. Experiments show that SGR improves performance on GRASP-Bench while maintaining zero-shot performance on related social video QA benchmarks.

MM-SpuBench: Towards Better Understanding of Spurious Biases in Multimodal LLMs

Spurious bias, a tendency to exploit spurious correlations between superficial input attributes and prediction targets, has revealed a severe robustness pitfall in classical machine learning problems. Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs), which leverage pretrained vision and language models, have recently demonstrated strong capability in joint vision-language understanding. However, both the presence and severity of spurious biases in MLLMs remain poorly understood. In this work, we address this gap by analyzing the spurious biases in the multimodal setting and uncovering the specific inference-time data patterns that can manifest this problem. To support this analysis, we introduce MM-SpuBench, a comprehensive, human-verified benchmark dataset consisting of image-class pairs annotated with core and spurious attributes, grounded in our taxonomy of nine distinct types of spurious correlations. The benchmark is constructed using human-interpretable attribute information to capture a wide range of spurious patterns reflective of real-world knowledge. Leveraging this benchmark, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the state-of-the-art open-source and proprietary MLLMs with both standard accuracy and the proposed Conditional Generation Likelihood Advantage (CGLA). Our findings highlight the persistence of reliance on spurious correlations and the difficulty of mitigation on our benchmark. Ego4D: Around the World in 3,000 Hours of Egocentric Video

We introduce Ego4D, a massive-scale egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite. It offers 3,670 hours of daily-life activity video spanning hundreds of scenarios (household, outdoor, workplace, leisure, etc.) captured by 931 unique camera wearers from 74 worldwide locations and 9 different countries. The approach to collection is designed to uphold rigorous privacy and ethics standards with consenting participants and robust de-identification procedures where relevant. Ego4D dramatically expands the volume of diverse egocentric video footage publicly available to the research community. Portions of the video are accompanied by audio, 3D meshes of the environment, eye gaze, stereo, and/or synchronized videos from multiple egocentric cameras at the same event. Furthermore, we present a host of new benchmark challenges centered around understanding the first-person visual experience in the past (querying an episodic memory), present (analyzing hand-object manipulation, audio-visual conversation, and social interactions), and future (forecasting activities). Egocentric Activity Recognition and Localization on a 3D Map

Given a video captured from a first person perspective and the environment context of where the video is recorded, can we recognize what the person is doing and identify where the action occurs in the 3D space? We address this challenging problem of jointly recognizing and localizing actions of a mobile user on a known 3D map from egocentric videos. To this end, we propose a novel deep probabilistic model. Our model takes the inputs of a Hierarchical Volumetric Representation (HVR) of the 3D environment and an egocentric video, infers the 3D action location as a latent variable, and recognizes the action based on the video and contextual cues surrounding its potential locations. To evaluate our model, we conduct extensive experiments on the subset of Ego4D dataset, in which both human naturalistic actions and photo-realistic 3D environment reconstructions are captured. Our method demonstrates strong results on both action recognition and 3D action localization across seen and unseen environments. We believe our work points to an exciting research direction in the intersection of egocentric vision, and 3D scene understanding.

Generative Adversarial Network for Future Hand Segmentation from Egocentric Video

We introduce the novel problem of anticipating a time series of future hand masks from egocentric video. A key challenge is to model the stochasticity of future head motions, which globally impact the head-worn camera video analysis. To this end, we propose a novel deep generative model -- EgoGAN, which uses a 3D Fully Convolutional Network to learn a spatio-temporal video representation for pixel-wise visual anticipation, generates future head motion using Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), and then predicts the future hand masks based on the video representation and the generated future head motion. We evaluate our method on both the EPIC-Kitchens and the EGTEA Gaze+ datasets. We conduct detailed ablation studies to validate the design choices of our approach. Furthermore, we compare our method with previous state-of-the-art methods on future image segmentation and show that our method can more accurately predict future hand masks.

Planes vs. Chairs: Category-guided 3D shape learning without any 3D cues

We present a novel 3D shape reconstruction method which learns to predict an implicit 3D shape representation from a single RGB image. Our approach uses a set of single-view images of multiple object categories without viewpoint annotation, forcing the model to learn across multiple object categories without 3D supervision. To facilitate learning with such minimal supervision, we use category labels to guide shape learning with a novel categorical metric learning approach. We also utilize adversarial and viewpoint regularization techniques to further disentangle the effects of viewpoint and shape. We obtain the first results for large-scale (more than 50 categories) single-viewpoint shape prediction using a single model without any 3D cues. We are also the first to examine and quantify the benefit of class information in single-view supervised 3D shape reconstruction. Our method achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art methods on ShapeNet-13, ShapeNet-55 and Pascal3D+.

The Surprising Positive Knowledge Transfer in Continual 3D Object Shape Reconstruction

Continual learning has been extensively studied for classification tasks with methods developed to primarily avoid catastrophic forgetting, a phenomenon where earlier learned concepts are forgotten at the expense of more recent samples. In this work, we present a set of continual 3D object shape reconstruction tasks, including complete 3D shape reconstruction from different input modalities, as well as visible surface (2.5D) reconstruction which, surprisingly demonstrate positive knowledge (backward and forward) transfer when training with solely standard SGD and without additional heuristics. We provide evidence that continuously updated representation learning of single-view 3D shape reconstruction improves the performance on learned and novel categories over time. We provide a novel analysis of knowledge transfer ability by looking at the output distribution shift across sequential learning tasks. Finally, we show that the robustness of these tasks leads to the potential of having a proxy representation learning task for continual classification. Discriminative Appearance Modeling with Multi-track Pooling for Real-time Multi-object Tracking

In multi-object tracking, the tracker maintains in its memory the appearance and motion information for each object in the scene. This memory is utilized for finding matches between tracks and detections and is updated based on the matching result. Many approaches model each target in isolation and lack the ability to use all the targets in the scene to jointly update the memory. This can be problematic when there are similar looking objects in the scene. In this paper, we solve the problem of simultaneously considering all tracks during memory updating, with only a small spatial overhead, via a novel multi-track pooling module. We additionally propose a training strategy adapted to multi-track pooling which generates hard tracking episodes online. We show that the combination of these innovations results in a strong discriminative appearance model, enabling the use of greedy data association to achieve online tracking performance. Our experiments demonstrate real-time, state-of-the-art performance on public multi-object tracking (MOT) datasets.

Transformers for prompt-level EMA non-response prediction

Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs) are an important psychological data source for measuring current cognitive states, affect, behavior, and environmental factors from participants in mobile health (mHealth) studies and treatment programs. Non-response, in which participants fail to respond to EMA prompts, is an endemic problem. The ability to accurately predict non-response could be utilized to improve EMA delivery and develop compliance interventions. Prior work has explored classical machine learning models for predicting non-response. However, as increasingly large EMA datasets become available, there is the potential to leverage deep learning models that have been effective in other fields. Recently, transformer models have shown state-of-the-art performance in NLP and other domains. This work is the first to explore the use of transformers for EMA data analysis. We address three key questions in applying transformers to EMA data: 1. Input representation, 2. encoding temporal information, 3. utility of pre-training on improving downstream prediction task performance. The transformer model achieves a non-response prediction AUC of 0.77 and is significantly better than classical ML and LSTM-based deep learning models. We will make our a predictive model trained on a corpus of 40K EMA samples freely-available to the research community, in order to facilitate the development of future transformer-based EMA analysis works.

A Robust Functional EM Algorithm for Incomplete Panel Count Data

Panel count data describes aggregated counts of recurrent events observed at discrete time points. To understand dynamics of health behaviors, the field of quantitative behavioral research has evolved to increasingly rely upon panel count data collected via multiple self reports, for example, about frequencies of smoking using in-the-moment surveys on mobile devices. However, missing reports are common and present a major barrier to downstream statistical learning. As a first step, under a missing completely at random assumption (MCAR), we propose a simple yet widely applicable functional EM algorithm to estimate the counting process mean function, which is of central interest to behavioral scientists. The proposed approach wraps several popular panel count inference methods, seamlessly deals with incomplete counts and is robust to misspecification of the Poisson process assumption. Theoretical analysis of the proposed algorithm provides finite-sample guarantees by expanding parametric EM theory to our general non-parametric setting. We illustrate the utility of the proposed algorithm through numerical experiments and an analysis of smoking cessation data. We also discuss useful extensions to address deviations from the MCAR assumption and covariate effects.

Attention Distillation for Learning Video Representations

We address the challenging problem of learning motion representations using deep models for video recognition. To this end, we make use of attention modules that learn to highlight regions in the video and aggregate features for recognition. Specifically, we propose to leverage output attention maps as a vehicle to transfer the learned representation from a motion (flow) network to an RGB network. We systematically study the design of attention modules, and develop a novel method for attention distillation. Our method is evaluated on major action benchmarks, and consistently improves the performance of the baseline RGB network by a significant margin. Moreover, we demonstrate that our attention maps can leverage motion cues in learning to identify the location of actions in video frames. Detecting Attended Visual Targets in Video

We address the problem of detecting attention targets in video. Our goal is to identify where each person in each frame of a video is looking, and correctly handle the case where the gaze target is out-of-frame. Our novel architecture models the dynamic interaction between the scene and head features and infers time-varying attention targets. We introduce a new annotated dataset, VideoAttentionTarget, containing complex and dynamic patterns of real-world gaze behavior. Our experiments show that our model can effectively infer dynamic attention in videos. In addition, we apply our predicted attention maps to two social gaze behavior recognition tasks, and show that the resulting classifiers significantly outperform existing methods. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on three datasets: GazeFollow (static images), VideoAttentionTarget (videos), and VideoCoAtt (videos), and obtain the first results for automatically classifying clinically-relevant gaze behavior without wearable cameras or eye trackers.

Regularizing Neural Networks via Minimizing Hyperspherical Energy

Inspired by the Thomson problem in physics where the distribution of multiple propelling electrons on a unit sphere can be modeled via minimizing some potential energy, hyperspherical energy minimization has demonstrated its potential in regularizing neural networks and improving their generalization power. In this paper, we first study the important role that hyperspherical energy plays in neural network training by analyzing its training dynamics. Then we show that naively minimizing hyperspherical energy suffers from some difficulties due to highly non-linear and non-convex optimization as the space dimensionality becomes higher, therefore limiting the potential to further improve the generalization. To address these problems, we propose the compressive minimum hyperspherical energy (CoMHE) as a more effective regularization for neural networks. Specifically, CoMHE utilizes projection mappings to reduce the dimensionality of neurons and minimizes their hyperspherical energy. According to different designs for the projection mapping, we propose several distinct yet well-performing variants and provide some theoretical guarantees to justify their effectiveness. Our experiments show that CoMHE consistently outperforms existing regularization methods, and can be easily applied to different neural networks.

Tripping through time: Efficient Localization of Activities in Videos

Localizing moments in untrimmed videos via language queries is a new and interesting task that requires the ability to accurately ground language into video. Previous works have approached this task by processing the entire video, often more than once, to localize relevant activities. In the real world applications of this approach, such as video surveillance, efficiency is a key system requirement. In this paper, we present TripNet, an end-to-end system that uses a gated attention architecture to model fine-grained textual and visual representations in order to align text and video content. Furthermore, TripNet uses reinforcement learning to efficiently localize relevant activity clips in long videos, by learning how to intelligently skip around the video. It extracts visual features for few frames to perform activity classification. In our evaluation over Charades-STA, ActivityNet Captions and the TACoS dataset, we find that TripNet achieves high accuracy and saves processing time by only looking at 32-41% of the entire video.
