Existence and uniqueness of asymptotically flat toric gravitational instantons

We prove uniqueness and existence theorems for four-dimensional asymptotically flat, Ricci-flat, gravitational instantons with a torus symmetry. In particular, we prove that such instantons are uniquely characterised by their rod structure, which is data that encodes the fixed point sets of the torus action. Furthermore, we establish that for every admissible rod structure there exists an instanton that is smooth up to possible conical singularities at the axes of symmetry. The proofs involve adapting the methods that are used to establish black hole uniqueness theorems, to a harmonic map formulation of Ricci-flat metrics with torus symmetry, where the target space is directly related to the metric (rather than auxiliary potentials). We also give an elementary proof of the nonexistence of asymptotically flat toric half-flat instantons. Finally, we derive a general set of identities that relate asymptotic invariants such as the mass to the rod structure.

All higher-dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou black holes

We prove that the only asymptotically flat spacetimes with a suitably regular event horizon, in a generalised Majumdar-Papapetrou class of solutions to higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory, are the standard multi-black holes. The proof involves a careful analysis of the near-horizon geometry and an extension of the positive mass theorem to Riemannian manifolds with conical singularities. This completes the classification of asymptotically flat, static, extreme black hole solutions in this theory.

Moduli space of stationary vacuum black holes from integrability

We consider the classification of asymptotically flat, stationary, vacuum black hole spacetimes in four and five dimensions, that admit one and two commuting axial Killing fields respectively. It is well known that the Einstein equations reduce to a harmonic map on the two-dimensional orbit space, which itself arises as the integrability condition for a linear system of spectral equations. We integrate the Belinski-Zakharov spectral equations along the boundary of the orbit space and use this to fully determine the metric and associated Ernst and twist potentials on the axes and horizons. This is sufficient to derive the moduli space of solutions that are free of conical singularities on the axes, for any given rod structure. As an illustration of this method we obtain constructive uniqueness proofs for the Kerr and Myers-Perry black holes and the known doubly spinning black rings.

On the nonexistence of a vacuum black lens

We demonstrate that five-dimensional, asymptotically flat, stationary and biaxisymmetric, vacuum black holes with lens space $L(n, 1)$ topology, possessing the simplest rod structure, do not exist. In particular, we show that the general solution on the axes and horizon, which we recently constructed by exploiting the integrability of this system, must suffer from a conical singularity on the inner axis component. We give a proof of this for two distinct singly spinning configurations and numerical evidence for the generic doubly spinning solution.

Electrovacuum spacetime near an extreme horizon

We determine all infinitesimal transverse deformations of extreme horizons in Einstein-Maxwell theory that preserve axisymmetry. In particular, we show that the general static transverse deformation of the AdS(2) X S(2) near-horizon geometry is a two-parameter family, which contains the known extreme charged, accelerating, static black hole solution held in equilibrium by an external electric or magnetic field (Ernst solution) and a special case of the extreme Kerr-Newman-Melvin solution. More generally, we find a three-parameter family of deformations of the extreme Kerr-Newman horizon, which contains the extreme Kerr-Newman-Melvin solution and a rotating generalisation of the Ernst solution. We also consider vacuum gravity with a cosmological constant and prove uniqueness of axisymmetric transverse deformations of the extreme Kerr-AdS horizon. Finally, we completely classify transverse deformations of extreme horizons in three-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant.

Black lenses in string theory

We present a new supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution to five-dimensional U(1)^3-supergravity which is regular on and outside an event horizon of lens space topology L(2,1). The solution has seven independent parameters and uplifts to a family of 1/8-supersymmetric D1-D5-P black brane solutions to Type IIB supergravity. The decoupling limit is asymptotically AdS(3) x S^3 x T^4, with a near-horizon geometry that is a twisted product of the near-horizon geometry of the extremal BTZ black hole and L(2,1) x T^4, although it is not (locally) a product space in the bulk. We show that the decoupling limit of a special case of the black lens is related to that of a black ring by spectral flow, thereby supplying an account of its entropy. Analogous solutions of U(1)^N-supergravity are also presented.

Transverse deformations of extreme horizons

We consider the inverse problem of determining all extreme black hole solutions to the Einstein equations with a prescribed near-horizon geometry. We investigate this problem by considering infinitesimal deformations of the near-horizon geometry along transverse null geodesics. We show that, up to a gauge transformation, the linearised Einstein equations reduce to an elliptic PDE for the extrinsic curvature of a cross-section of the horizon. We deduce that for a given near-horizon geometry there exists a finite dimensional moduli space of infinitesimal transverse deformations. We then establish a uniqueness theorem for transverse deformations of the extreme Kerr horizon. In particular, we prove that the only smooth axisymmetric transverse deformation of the near-horizon geometry of the extreme Kerr black hole, such that cross-sections of the horizon are marginally trapped surfaces, corresponds to that of the extreme Kerr black hole. Furthermore, we determine all smooth and biaxisymmetric transverse deformations of the near-horizon geometry of the five-dimensional extreme Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta. We find a three parameter family of solutions such that cross-sections of the horizon are marginally trapped, which is more general than the known black hole solutions. We discuss the possibility that they correspond to new five dimensional vacuum black holes.

A supersymmetric black lens

We present a new supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, black hole solution to five-dimensional supergravity. It is regular on and outside an event horizon of lens space topology L(2,1). It is the first example of an asymptotically flat black hole with lens space topology. The solution is characterised by a charge, two angular momenta and a magnetic flux through a non-contractible disc region ending on the horizon, with one constraint relating these.

Degenerate horizons, Einstein metrics, and Lens space bundles

We present a new infinite class of near-horizon geometries of degenerate horizons, satisfying Einstein's equations for all odd dimensions greater than five. The symmetry and topology of these solutions is compatible with those of black holes. The simplest examples give horizons of spatial topology S^3xS^2 or the non-trivial S^3-bundle over S^2. More generally, the horizons are Lens space bundles associated to certain principal torus-bundles over Fano Kaehler-Einstein manifolds. We also consider the classification problem for Einstein metrics on such Lens space bundles and derive a family which unifies all the known examples (Sasakian and non-Sasakian).

Null infinity and extremal horizons in AdS-CFT

We consider AdS gravity duals to CFT on background spacetimes with a null infinity. Null infinity on the conformal boundary may extend to an extremal horizon in the bulk. For example it does so for Poincare-AdS, although does not for planar Schwarzschild-AdS. If null infinity does extend into an extremal horizon in the bulk, we show that the bulk near-horizon geometry is determined by the geometry of the boundary null infinity. Hence the `infra-red' geometry of the bulk is fixed by the large scale behaviour of the CFT spacetime. In addition the boundary stress tensor must have a particular decay at null infinity. As an application, we argue that for CFT on asymptotically flat backgrounds, any static bulk dual containing an extremal horizon extending from the boundary null infinity, must have the near-horizon geometry of Poincare-AdS. We also discuss a class of boundary null infinity that cannot extend to a bulk extremal horizon, although we give evidence that they can extend to an analogous null surface in the bulk which possesses an associated scale-invariant `near-geometry'.

The first law of soliton and black hole mechanics in five dimensions

We derive a mass formula and a mass variation law for asymptotically flat, stationary spacetimes, invariant under two commuting rotational symmetries, in a general five dimensional theory of gravity coupled to an arbitrary set of Maxwell fields and uncharged scalar fields. If the spacetime is everywhere regular, these mass formulas reduce to a sum of magnetic flux terms defined on its non-trivial 2-cycles. If there is a black hole, we obtain a mass variation law more general than previously obtained, which also has contributions from the 2-cycles exterior to the black hole. This can be interpreted as the first law of black hole mechanics in a background soliton containing bubbles.

Three-dimensional black holes and descendants

We determine the most general three-dimensional vacuum spacetime with a negative cosmological constant containing a non-singular Killing horizon. We show that the general solution with a spatially compact horizon possesses a second commuting Killing field and deduce that it must be related to the BTZ black hole (or its near-horizon geometry) by a diffeomorphism. We show there is a general class of asymptotically AdS$_3$ extreme black holes with arbitrary charges with respect to one of the asymptotic-symmetry Virasoro algebras and vanishing charges with respect to the other. We interpret these as descendants of the extreme BTZ black hole.

Classification of near-horizon geometries of extremal black holes

Any spacetime containing a degenerate Killing horizon, such as an extremal black hole, possesses a well-defined notion of a near-horizon geometry. We review such near-horizon geometry solutions in a variety of dimensions and theories in a unified manner. We discuss various general results including horizon topology and near-horizon symmetry enhancement. We also discuss the status of the classification of near-horizon geometries in theories ranging from vacuum gravity to Einstein-Maxwell theory and supergravity theories. Finally, we discuss applications to the classification of extremal black holes and various related topics. Several new results are presented and open problems are highlighted throughout.

Uniqueness of extreme horizons in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

We consider stationary extreme black hole solutions to the Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in four dimensions, allowing for a negative cosmological constant. We prove that any axisymmetric black hole of this kind possesses a near-horizon AdS(2) symmetry and deduce its near-horizon geometry must be that of the abelian embedded extreme Kerr-Newman (AdS) black hole. We also show that the near-horizon geometry of any static black hole is a direct product of AdS(2) and a constant curvature space.

Extremal Sasakian horizons

We point out a simple construction of an infinite class of Einstein near-horizon geometries in all odd dimensions greater than five. Cross-sections of the horizons are inhomogeneous Sasakian metrics (but not Einstein) on S^3xS^2 and more generally on Lens space bundles over any compact positive Kaehler-Einstein manifold. They are all consistent with the known topology and symmetry constraints for asymptotically flat or globally AdS black holes.

Gravitational instability of an extreme Kerr black hole

Aretakis has proved the existence of an instability of a massless scalar field at the horizon of an extreme Kerr or Reissner-Nordstrom black hole: for generic initial data, a transverse derivative of the scalar field at the horizon does not decay, and higher transverse derivatives blow up. We show that a similar instability occurs for linearized gravitational, and electromagnetic, perturbations of an extreme Kerr black hole. We show also that the massless scalar field instability occurs for extreme black hole solutions of a large class of theories in various spacetime dimensions.

An infinite class of extremal horizons in higher dimensions

We present a new class of near-horizon geometries which solve Einstein's vacuum equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in all even dimensions greater than four. Spatial sections of the horizon are inhomogeneous S^2-bundles over any compact Kaehler-Einstein manifold. For a given base, the solutions are parameterised by one continuous parameter (the angular momentum) and an integer which determines the topology of the horizon. In six dimensions the horizon topology is either S^2 x S^2 or CP^2 # -CP^2. In higher dimensions the S^2-bundles are always non-trivial, and for a fixed base, give an infinite number of distinct horizon topologies. Furthermore, depending on the choice of base we can get examples of near-horizon geometries with a single rotational symmetry (the minimal dimension for this is eight). All of our horizon geometries are consistent with all known topology and symmetry constraints for the horizons of asymptotically flat or globally Anti de Sitter extremal black holes.

Constructing near-horizon geometries in supergravities with hidden symmetry

We consider the classification of near-horizon geometries in a general two-derivative theory of gravity coupled to abelian gauge fields and uncharged scalars in four and five dimensions, with one and two commuting rotational symmetries respectively. Assuming that the theory of gravity reduces to a 3d non-linear sigma model (as is typically the case for ungauged supergravities), we show that the functional form of any such near-horizon geometry may be determined. As an example we apply this to five dimensional minimal supergravity. We also construct an example of a five parameter near-horizon geometry solution to this theory with S^1 X S^2 horizon topology. We discuss its relation to the near-horizon geometries of the yet to be constructed extremal black rings with both electric and dipole charges.

Ricci solitons, Ricci flow, and strongly coupled CFT in the Schwarzschild Unruh or Boulware vacua

The elliptic Einstein-DeTurck equation may be used to numerically find Einstein metrics on Riemannian manifolds. Static Lorentzian Einstein metrics are considered by analytically continuing to Euclidean time. Ricci-DeTurck flow is a constructive algorithm to solve this equation, and is simple to implement when the solution is a stable fixed point, the only complication being that Ricci solitons may exist which are not Einstein. Here we extend previous work to consider the Einstein-DeTurck equation for Riemannian manifolds with boundaries, and those that continue to static Lorentzian spacetimes which are asymptotically flat, Kaluza-Klein, locally AdS or have extremal horizons. Using a maximum principle we prove that Ricci solitons do not exist in these cases and so any solution is Einstein. We also argue that Ricci-DeTurck flow preserves these classes of manifolds. As an example we simulate Ricci-DeTurck flow for a manifold with asymptotics relevant for AdS_5/CFT_4. Our maximum principle dictates there are no soliton solutions, and we give strong numerical evidence that there exists a stable fixed point of the flow which continues to a smooth static Lorentzian Einstein metric. Our asymptotics are such that this describes the classical gravity dual relevant for the CFT on a Schwarzschild background in either the Unruh or Boulware vacua. It determines the leading O(N^2) part of the CFT stress tensor, which interestingly is regular on both the future and past Schwarzschild horizons.

On the uniqueness of extremal vacuum black holes

We prove uniqueness theorems for asymptotically flat, stationary, extremal, vacuum black hole solutions, in four and five dimensions with one and two commuting rotational Killing fields respectively. As in the non-extremal case, these problems may be cast as boundary value problems on the two dimensional orbit space. We show that the orbit space for solutions with one extremal horizon is homeomorphic to an infinite strip, where the two boundaries correspond to the rotational axes, and the two asymptotic regions correspond to spatial infinity and the near-horizon geometry. In four dimensions this allows us to establish the uniqueness of extremal Kerr amongst asymptotically flat, stationary, rotating, vacuum black holes with a single extremal horizon. In five dimensions we show that there is at most one asymptotically flat, stationary, extremal vacuum black hole with a connected horizon, two commuting rotational symmetries and given interval structure and angular momenta. We also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for four and five dimensional asymptotically flat vacuum black holes with the above symmetries to be static (valid for extremal, non-extremal and even non-connected horizons).

Do supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings exist?

We determine the most general near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric, asymptotically anti-de Sitter, black hole solution of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity that admits two rotational symmetries. The near-horizon geometry is that of the supersymmetric, topologically spherical, black hole solution of Chong et al. This proves that regular supersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings with two rotational symmetries do not exist in minimal supergravity. However, we do find a solution corresponding to the near-horizon geometry of a supersymmetric black ring held in equilibrium by a conical singularity, which suggests that nonsupersymmetric anti-de Sitter black rings may exist but cannot be "balanced" in the supersymmetric limit.

Notes on non-extremal, charged, rotating black holes in minimal D=5 gauged supergravity

We consider the non-extremal, charged, rotating black hole solution of five dimensional minimal gauged supergravity of Cvetic, Lu and Pope [Phys.Lett. B 598 (2004) 273]. We compute the Ashtekar-Magnon-Das mass and show it agrees with the thermodynamic mass. We find a reducible Killing tensor and integrate the geodesic equation explicitly. We also compute the Euclidean action of the black hole and show it satisfies the quantum statistical relation. Further we present a Smarr relation. We end with a discussion of applications to string theory.

Special symmetries of the charged Kerr-AdS black hole of D=5 minimal gauged supergravity

In this note we prove that the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the background of the recently discovered charged Kerr-AdS black hole of D=5 minimal gauged supergravity is separable, for arbitrary values of the two rotation parameters. This allows us to write down an irreducible Killing tensor for the spacetime. As a result we also show that the Klein-Gordon equation in this background is separable. We also consider the Dirac equation in this background in the special case of equal rotation parameters and show it has separable solutions. Finally we discuss the near-horizon geometry of the supersymmetric limit of the black hole.

Electrically charged dilatonic black rings

In this note we present (electrically) charged dilatonic black ring solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions and we consider their physical properties. These solutions are static and as in the neutral case possess a conical singularity. We show how one may remove the conical singularity by application of a Harrison transformation, which physically corresponds to supporting the charged ring with an electric field. Finally, we discuss the slowly rotating case for arbitrary dilaton coupling.

Canonical quantization of a massive particle on $AdS_3$

The classical theory for a massive free particle moving on the group manifold $AdS_3 \cong SL(2, \mathbb{R})$ is analysed in detail. In particular a symplectic structure and two different sets of canonical coordinates are explicitly found, corresponding to the Cartan and Iwasawa decomposition of the group. Canonical quantization is performed in two different ways; by imposing the future-directed constraint before and after quantization. It is found that this leads to different quantum theories. The Hilbert space of either theory decomposes into the sum of certain irreducible representations of $sl(2,\mathbb{R}) \oplus sl(2,\mathbb{R})$; however, depending on how the constraint is imposed we get different representations. Quantization of the mass occurs, although a continuum exists in the unconstrained theory corresponding to particles that can reverse their direction in time. A quantization in terms of the ``chiral'' variables of the theory is also carried out giving the same results. Comparisons are made between QFT in $AdS_3$ and the quantum mechanics derived, and it is found that one of the quantum theories is consistent with the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound.
