Five-dimensional electrostatic black holes in a background field

We consider $5$ dimensional electrostatic solutions to Einstein-Maxwell gravity with $2$ commuting spacelike Killing fields. Taking two distinct reductions from $5$ dimensions to a $3$ dimensional base space, we write the Einstein-Maxwell equations using some axially symmetric functions on $\mathbb{R}^3$. These equations can be viewed as arising from a harmonic map coupled to 3-dimensional gravity with the isometries of the target space of this map revealing a hidden $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry of this sector of the theory. Depending on the choice of reduction this symmetry then gives rise to two different 1-parameter families of transformations corresponding to either charging a black hole or immersing it in a background electric field. We use these transformations to charge a static black Saturn and a static $L(n,1)$ black lens spacetime and by tuning the strength of the external field, we cure the conical singularities to give new regular solutions. Notably the electrified black lens generated is the first example of a regular black lens in Einstein-Maxwell gravity with topologically trivial asymptotics.

Moduli space of stationary vacuum black holes from integrability

We consider the classification of asymptotically flat, stationary, vacuum black hole spacetimes in four and five dimensions, that admit one and two commuting axial Killing fields respectively. It is well known that the Einstein equations reduce to a harmonic map on the two-dimensional orbit space, which itself arises as the integrability condition for a linear system of spectral equations. We integrate the Belinski-Zakharov spectral equations along the boundary of the orbit space and use this to fully determine the metric and associated Ernst and twist potentials on the axes and horizons. This is sufficient to derive the moduli space of solutions that are free of conical singularities on the axes, for any given rod structure. As an illustration of this method we obtain constructive uniqueness proofs for the Kerr and Myers-Perry black holes and the known doubly spinning black rings.

On the nonexistence of a vacuum black lens

We demonstrate that five-dimensional, asymptotically flat, stationary and biaxisymmetric, vacuum black holes with lens space $L(n, 1)$ topology, possessing the simplest rod structure, do not exist. In particular, we show that the general solution on the axes and horizon, which we recently constructed by exploiting the integrability of this system, must suffer from a conical singularity on the inner axis component. We give a proof of this for two distinct singly spinning configurations and numerical evidence for the generic doubly spinning solution.
