Timelike conjugate points in Lorentzian length spaces

We study notions of conjugate points along timelike geodesics in the synthetic setting of Lorentzian (pre-)length spaces, inspired by earlier work for metric spaces by Shankar--Sormani. After preliminary considerations on convergence of timelike and causal geodesics, we introduce and compare one-sided, symmetric, unreachable and ultimate conjugate points along timelike geodesics. We show that all such notions are compatible with the usual one in the smooth (strongly causal) spacetime setting. As applications, we prove a timelike Rauch comparison theorem, as well as a result closely related to the recently established Lorentzian Cartan--Hadamard theorem by Erös--Gieger. In the appendix, we give a detailed treatment of the Fréchet distance on the space of non-stopping curves up to reparametrization, a technical tool used throughout the paper.

On differentiability of volume time functions

We show differentiability of a class of Geroch's volume functions on globally hyperbolic manifolds. Furthermore, we prove that every volume function satisfies a local anti-Lipschitz condition over causal curves, and that locally Lipschitz time functions which are locally anti-Lipschitz can be uniformly approximated by smooth time functions with timelike gradient. Finally, we prove that in stably causal spacetimes Hawking's time function can be uniformly approximated by smooth time functions with timelike gradient.

A positive mass theorem for low-regularity Riemannian metrics

We show that the positive mass theorem holds for continuous Riemannian metrics that lie in the Sobolev space $W^{2, n/2}_{loc}$ for manifolds of dimension less than or equal to $7$ or spin-manifolds of any dimension. More generally, we give a (negative) lower bound on the ADM mass of metrics for which the scalar curvature fails to be non-negative, where the negative part has compact support and sufficiently small $L^{n/2}$ norm. We show that a Riemannian metric in $W^{2, p}_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{n}{2}$ with non-negative scalar curvature in the distributional sense can be approximated locally uniformly by smooth metrics with non-negative scalar curvature. For continuous metrics in $W^{2, n/2}_{loc}$, there exist smooth approximating metrics with non-negative scalar curvature that converge in $L^p_{loc}$ for all $p < \infty$.

On Lorentzian causality with continuous metrics

We present a systematic study of causality theory on Lorentzian manifolds with continuous metrics. Examples are given which show that some standard facts in smooth Lorentzian geometry, such as light-cones being hypersurfaces, are wrong when metrics which are merely continuous are considered. We show that existence of time functions remains true on domains of dependence with continuous metrics, and that $C^{0,1}$ differentiability of the metric suffices for many key results of the smooth causality theory.

Areas and volumes for null cones

Motivated by recent work of Choquet-Bruhat, Chrusciel, and Martin-Garcia, we prove monotonicity properties and comparison results for the area of slices of the null cone of a point in a Lorentzian manifold. We also prove volume comparison results for subsets of the null cone analogous to the Bishop-Gromov relative volume monotonicity theorem and Guenther's volume comparison theorem. We briefly discuss how these estimates may be used to control the null second fundamental form of slices of the null cone in Ricci-flat Lorentzian four-manifolds with null curvature bounded above.

Null injectivity estimate under an upper bound on the curvature

We establish a uniform estimate for the injectivity radius of the past null cone of a point in a general Lorentzian manifold foliated by spacelike hypersurfaces and satisfying an upper curvature bound. Precisely, our main assumptions are, on one hand, upper bounds on the null curvature of the spacetime and the lapse function of the foliation, and sup-norm bounds on the deformation tensors of the foliation. Our proof is inspired by techniques from Riemannian geometry, and it should be noted that we impose no restriction on the size of the curvature or deformation tensors, and allow for metrics that are "far" from the Minkowski one. The relevance of our estimate is illustrated with a class of plane-symmetric spacetimes which satisfy our assumptions but admit no uniform lower bound on the curvature not even in the L2 norm. The conditions we put forward, therefore, lead to a uniform control of the spacetime geometry and should be useful in the context of general relativity.

Reducible connections and non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations

We construct the most general reducible connection that satisfies the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on a simply connected, open subset of flat $\mathbb{R}^4$. We show how all such connections lie in the orbit of the flat connection on $\mathbb{R}^4$ under the action of non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Such connections fit naturally inside a larger class of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations that are analogous to harmonic maps of finite type.

The ADHM construction and non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations

We consider the action on instanton moduli spaces of the non-local symmetries of the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on $\mathbb{R}^4$ discovered by Chau and coauthors. Beginning with the ADHM construction, we show that a sub-algebra of the symmetry algebra generates the tangent space to the instanton moduli space at each point. We explicitly find the subgroup of the symmetry group that preserves the one-instanton moduli space. This action simply corresponds to a scaling of the moduli space.

On Galilean connections and the first jet bundle

We express the first jet bundle of curves in Euclidean space as homogeneous spaces associated to a Galilean-type group. Certain Cartan connections on a manifold with values in the Lie algebra of the Galilean group are characterized as geometries associated to systems of second order ordinary differential equations. We show these Cartan connections admit a form of normal coordinates, and that in these normal coordinates the geodesic equations of the connection are second order ordinary differential equations. We then classify such connections by some of their torsions, extending a classical theorem of Chern involving the geometry associated to a system of second order differential equations.
