Multidimensional Persistence Module Classification via Lattice-Theoretic Convolutions

Multiparameter persistent homology has been largely neglected as an input to machine learning algorithms. We consider the use of lattice-based convolutional neural network layers as a tool for the analysis of features arising from multiparameter persistence modules. We find that these show promise as an alternative to convolutions for the classification of multidimensional persistence modules.

Opinion Dynamics on Discourse Sheaves

We introduce a novel class of Laplacians and diffusion dynamics on discourse sheaves as a model for network dynamics, with application to opinion dynamics on social networks. These sheaves are algebraic data structures tethered to a network (or more general space) that can represent various modes of communication, including selective opinion modulation and lying. After introducing the sheaf model, we develop a sheaf Laplacian in this context and show how to evolve both opinions and communications with diffusion dynamics over the network. Issues of controllability, reachability, bounded confidence, and harmonic extension are addressed using this framework.

Consistency constraints for overlapping data clustering

We examine overlapping clustering schemes with functorial constraints, in the spirit of Carlsson--Memoli. This avoids issues arising from the chaining required by partition-based methods. Our principal result shows that any clustering functor is naturally constrained to refine single-linkage clusters and be refined by maximal-linkage clusters. We work in the context of metric spaces with non-expansive maps, which is appropriate for modeling data processing which does not increase information content.

Applying the $χ^2$ Regularization Parameter Estimator by Downsampling Through Relations with The Singular Value Expansion

The solution, $x$, of the linear system of equations $A x\approx b$ arising from the discretization of an ill-posed integral equation with a square integrable kernel $H(s,t)$ is considered. The Tikhonov regularized solution $ x(λ)$ is found as the minimizer of $J( x)=\{ \|A x - b\|_2^2 + λ^2 \|L x\|_2^2\}$. $ x(λ)$ depends on regularization parameter $λ$ that trades off the data fidelity, and on the smoothing norm determined by $L$. Here we consider the case where $L$ is diagonal and invertible, and employ the Galerkin method to provide the relationship between the singular value expansion and the singular value decomposition for square integrable kernels. The resulting approximation of the integral equation permits examination of the properties of the regularized solution $ x(λ)$ independent of the sample size of the data. We prove that estimation of the regularization parameter can be obtained by consistently down sampling the data and the system matrix, leading to solutions of coarse to fine grained resolution. Hence, the estimate of $λ$ for a large problem may be found by downsampling to a smaller problem, or to a set of smaller problems, effectively moving the costly estimate of the regularization parameter to the coarse representation of the problem. Moreover, the full singular value decomposition for the fine scale system is replaced by a number of dominant terms which is determined from the coarse resolution system, again reducing the computational cost. Numerical results illustrate the theory and demonstrate the practicality of the approach for regularization parameter estimation using generalized cross validation, unbiased predictive risk estimation and the discrepancy principle applied for both the system of equations, and the augmented system of equations.

Charged black holes in string-inspired gravity: II. Mass inflation and dependence on parameters and potentials

We investigate the relation between the existence of mass inflation and model parameters of string-inspired gravity models. In order to cover various models, we investigate a Brans-Dicke theory that is coupled to a U(1) gauge field. By tuning a model parameter that decides the coupling between the Brans-Dicke field and the electromagnetic field, we can make both of models such that the Brans-Dicke field is biased toward strong or weak coupling directions after gravitational collapses. We observe that as long as the Brans-Dicke field is biased toward any (strong or weak) directions, there is no Cauchy horizon and no mass inflation. Therefore, we conclude that to induce a Cauchy horizon and mass inflation inside a charged black hole, either there is no bias of the Brans-Dicke field as well as no Brans-Dicke hair outside the horizon or such a biased Brans-Dicke field should be well trapped and controlled by a potential.

Charged black holes in string-inspired gravity: I. Causal structures and responses of the Brans-Dicke field

We investigate gravitational collapses of charged black holes in string-inspired gravity models, including dilaton gravity and braneworld model, as well as f(R) gravity and the ghost limit. If we turn on gauge coupling, the causal structures and the responses of the Brans-Dicke field depend on the coupling between the charged matter and the Brans-Dicke field. For Type IIA inspired models, a Cauchy horizon exists, while there is no Cauchy horizon for Type I or Heterotic inspired models. For Type IIA inspired models, the no-hair theorem is satisfied asymptotically, while it is biased to the weak coupling limit for Type I or Heterotic inspired models. Apart from string theory, we find that in the ghost limit, a gravitational collapse can induce inflation by itself and create one-way traversable wormholes without the need of other special initial conditions.

Non-negatively constrained least squares and parameter choice by the residual periodogram for the inversion of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

The inverse problem associated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy requiring the solution of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is considered. If the underlying physical model is not clearly determined, the inverse problem needs to be solved using a regularized linear least squares problem that is obtained from the discretization of the integral equation. For this system, it is shown that the model error can be made negligible by a change of variables and by extending the effective range of quadrature. This change of variables serves as a right preconditioner that significantly improves the condition of the system. Still, to obtain feasible solutions the additional constraint of non-negativity is required. Simulations with artificial, but realistic, data demonstrate that the use of non-negatively constrained least squares with a smoothing norm provides higher quality solutions than those obtained without the non-negative constraint. Using higher-order smoothing norms also reduces the error in the solutions. The L-curve and residual periodogram parameter choice criteria, which are used for parameter choice with regularized linear least squares, are successfully adapted to be used for the non-negatively constrained Tikhonov least squares problem. Although these results have been verified within the context of the analysis of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, there is no reason to suppose that they would not be relevant within the broader framework of solving Fredholm integral equations for other applications.

Inside and outside stories of black-branes in anti de Sitter space

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics inside and outside of black-branes in anti de Sitter space by numerical simulations using double-null formalism. We prepare a charged planar matter shell which, due to a negative cosmological constant, collapses and dynamically forms a black-brane with an apparent horizon, a singularity and a Cauchy horizon. The gravitational collapse cannot form a naked overcharged black-brane and hence weak cosmic censorship is safe. Although mass inflation occurs, the effect is much milder than in the case of charged black holes; hence, strong cosmic censorship seems not to be safe. We observed the scalar field dynamics outside the horizon. There should remain a non-trivial scalar field combination - 'charge cloud' - between the horizon and the boundary. This can give some meaning in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

A new method for reconstructing the density distribution of matter in the disks of spiral galaxies from the rotation velocity curve in it

In this paper we propose a new method for reconstructing the surface density of matter in flat disks of spiral galaxies. The surface density is expressed through observational rotation velocity curves of visible matter in the disks of spiral galaxies. The new method is not based on quadrature of special functions. The found solution is used for processing and analysis of observational data from several spiral galaxies. The new method can be used to more accurately estimate the amount of dark matter in spiral galaxies.

Physics of the interior of a black hole with an exotic scalar matter

We use a numerical code to consider the nonlinear processes arising when a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is irradiated by an exotic scalar field (modelled as a free massless scalar field with an opposite sign for its energy-momentum tensor). These processes are quite different from the processes arising in the case of the same black hole being irradiated by a pulse of a normal scalar field. In our case, we did not observe the creation of a spacelike strong singularity in the T-region of the space-time. We investigate the antifocusing effects in the gravity field of the exotic scalar field with the negative energy density and the evolution of the mass function. We demonstrate the process of vanishing of the black hole when it is irradiated by a strong pulse of an exotic scalar field.

Dynamics of false vacuum bubbles: beyond the thin shell approximation

We numerically study the dynamics of false vacuum bubbles which are inside an almost flat background; we assumed spherical symmetry and the size of the bubble is smaller than the size of the background horizon. According to the thin shell approximation and the null energy condition, if the bubble is outside of a Schwarzschild black hole, unless we assume Farhi-Guth-Guven tunneling, expanding and inflating solutions are impossible. In this paper, we extend our method to beyond the thin shell approximation: we include the dynamics of fields and assume that the transition layer between a true vacuum and a false vacuum has non-zero thickness. If a shell has sufficiently low energy, as expected from the thin shell approximation, it collapses (Type 1). However, if the shell has sufficiently large energy, it tends to expand. Here, via the field dynamics, field values of inside of the shell slowly roll down to the true vacuum and hence the shell does not inflate (Type 2). If we add sufficient exotic matters to regularize the curvature near the shell, inflation may be possible without assuming Farhi-Guth-Guven tunneling. In this case, a wormhole is dynamically generated around the shell (Type 3). By tuning our simulation parameters, we could find transitions between Type 1 and Type 2, as well as between Type 2 and Type 3. Between Type 2 and Type 3, we could find another class of solutions (Type 4). Finally, we discuss the generation of a bubble universe and the violation of unitarity. We conclude that the existence of a certain combination of exotic matter fields violates unitarity.

Passage of radiation through wormholes

We investigate numerically the process of the passage of a radiation pulse through a wormhole and the subsequent evolution of the wormhole that is caused by the gravitational action of this pulse. The initial static wormhole is modeled by the spherically symmetrical Armendariz-Picon solution with zero mass. The radiation pulses are modeled by spherically symmetrical shells of self-gravitating massless scalar fields. We demonstrate that the compact signal propagates through the wormhole and investigate the dynamics of the fields in this process for both cases: collapse of the wormhole into the black hole and for the expanding wormhole.
