Counterfactuals in factor models

We study a new model where the potential outcomes, corresponding to the values of a (possibly continuous) treatment, are linked through common factors. The factors can be estimated using a panel of regressors. We propose a procedure to estimate time-specific and unit-specific average marginal effects in this context. Our approach can be used either with high-dimensional time series or with large panels. It allows for treatment effects heterogenous across time and units and is straightforward to implement since it only relies on principal components analysis and elementary computations. We derive the asymptotic distribution of our estimator of the average marginal effect and highlight its solid finite sample performance through a simulation exercise. The approach can also be used to estimate average counterfactuals or adapted to an instrumental variables setting and we discuss these extensions. Finally, we illustrate our novel methodology through an empirical application on income inequality.

High-dimensional nonconvex lasso-type $M$-estimators

This paper proposes a theory for $\ell_1$-norm penalized high-dimensional $M$-estimators, with nonconvex risk and unrestricted domain. Under high-level conditions, the estimators are shown to attain the rate of convergence $s_0\sqrt{\log(nd)/n}$, where $s_0$ is the number of nonzero coefficients of the parameter of interest. Sufficient conditions for our main assumptions are then developed and finally used in several examples including robust linear regression, binary classification and nonlinear least squares.

High-dimensional inference robust to outliers with l1-norm penalization

This paper studies inference in the high-dimensional linear regression model with outliers. Sparsity constraints are imposed on the vector of coefficients of the covariates. The number of outliers can grow with the sample size while their proportion goes to 0. We propose a two-step procedure for inference on the coefficients of a fixed subset of regressors. The first step is a based on several square-root lasso l1-norm penalized estimators, while the second step is the ordinary least squares estimator applied to a well chosen regression. We establish asymptotic normality of the two-step estimator. The proposed procedure is efficient in the sense that it attains the semiparametric efficiency bound when applied to the model without outliers under homoscedasticity. This approach is also computationally advantageous, it amounts to solving a finite number of convex optimization programs.
