A dynamical theory for one-dimensional fermions with strong two-body losses: universal non-Hermitian Zeno physics and spin-charge separation

We study an interacting one-dimensional gas of spin-1/2 fermions with two-body losses. The dynamical phase diagram that characterises the approach to the stationary state displays a wide quantum-Zeno region, identified by a peculiar behaviour of the lowest eigenvalues of the associated non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We characterise the universal dynamics of this Zeno regime using an approximation scheme based on a effective decoupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom, where the latter effectively evolve in a non-Markovian way according to a non-Hermitian Heisenberg Hamiltonian. We present detailed results for the time evolution from initial states with one particle per site with either incoherent and antiferromagnetic spin order, showing how the two non-equilibrium evolutions build up drastically different charge correlations.

Correlation functions and transport coefficients in generalised hydrodynamics

We review the recent advances on exact results for dynamical correlation functions at large scales and related transport coefficients in interacting integrable models. We discuss Drude weights, conductivity and diffusion constants, as well as linear and nonlinear response on top of equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. We consider the problems from the complementary perspectives of the general hydrodynamic theory of many-body systems, including hydrodynamic projections, and form-factor expansions in integrable models, and show how they provide a comprehensive and consistent set of exact methods to extract large scale behaviours. Finally, we overview various applications in integrable spin chains and field theories.

Subdiffusive hydrodynamics of nearly-integrable anisotropic spin chains

We address spin transport in the easy-axis Heisenberg spin chain subject to integrability-breaking perturbations. We find that spin transport is subdiffusive with dynamical exponent $z=4$ up to a timescale that is parametrically long in the anisotropy. In the limit of infinite anisotropy, transport is subdiffusive at all times; for large finite anisotropy, one eventually recovers diffusion at late times, but with a diffusion constant independent of the strength of the integrability breaking perturbation. We provide numerical evidence for these findings, and explain them by adapting the generalized hydrodynamics framework to nearly integrable dynamics. Our results show that the diffusion constant of near-integrable interacting spin chains is generically not perturbative in the integrability breaking strength.

Variational optimization of continuous matrix product states

Just as matrix product states represent ground states of one-dimensional quantum spin systems faithfully, continuous matrix product states (cMPS) provide faithful representations of the vacuum of interacting field theories in one spatial dimension. Unlike the quantum spin case however, for which the density matrix renormalization group and related matrix product state algorithms provide robust algorithms for optimizing the variational states, the optimization of cMPS for systems with inhomogeneous external potentials has been problematic. We resolve this problem by constructing a piecewise linear parameterization of the underlying matrix-valued functions, which enables the calculation of the exact reduced density matrices everywhere in the system by high-order Taylor expansions. This turns the variational cMPS problem into a variational algorithm from which both the energy and its backwards derivative can be calculated exactly and at a cost that scales as the cube of the bond dimension. We illustrate this by finding ground states of interacting bosons in external potentials, and by calculating boundary or Casimir energy corrections of continuous many-body systems with open boundary conditions.

Real-time scattering of interacting quasiparticles in quantum spin chains

We develop a method based on tensor networks to create localized single particle excitations on top of strongly-correlated quantum spin chains. In analogy to the problem of creating localized Wannier modes, this is achieved by optimizing the gauge freedom of momentum excitations on top of matrix product states. The corresponding wavepackets propagate almost dispersionless. The time-dependent variational principle is used to scatter two such wavepackets, and we extract the phase shift from the collision data. We also study reflection and transmission coefficients of a wavepacket impinging on an impurity.

Superdiffusion from emergent classical solitons in quantum spin chains

Finite-temperature spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain is known to be superdiffusive, and has been conjectured to lie in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Using a kinetic theory of transport, we compute the KPZ coupling strength for the Heisenberg chain as a function of temperature, directly from microscopics; the results agree well with density-matrix renormalization group simulations. We establish a rigorous quantum-classical correspondence between the "giant quasiparticles" that govern superdiffusion and solitons in the classical continuous Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet. We conclude that KPZ universality has the same origin in classical and quantum integrable isotropic magnets: a finite-temperature gas of low-energy classical solitons.

Thermalisation of a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas via diffusion

For a decade the fate of a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons in an external trapping potential remained mysterious. We here show that whenever the underlying integrability of the gas is broken by the presence of the external potential, the inevitable diffusive rearrangements between the quasiparticles, quantified by the diffusion constants of the gas, eventually lead the system to thermalise at late times. We show that the full thermalising dynamics can be described by the generalised hydrodynamics with diffusion and force terms, and we compare these predictions with numerical simulations. Finally, we provide an explanation for the slow thermalisation rates observed in numerical and experimental settings: the hydrodynamics of integrable models is characterised by a continuity of modes, which can have arbitrarily small diffusion coefficients. As a consequence, the approach to thermalisation can display pre-thermal plateau and relaxation dynamics with long polynomial finite-time corrections.

Universality classes of spin transport in one-dimensional isotropic magnets: the onset of logarithmic anomalies

We report a systematic study of finite-temperature spin transport in quantum and classical one-dimensional magnets with isotropic spin interactions, including both integrable and non-integrable models. Employing a phenomenological framework based on a generalized Burgers' equation in a time-dependent stochastic environment, we identify four different universality classes of spin fluctuations. These comprise, aside from normal spin diffusion, three types of superdiffusive transport: the KPZ universality class and two distinct types of anomalous diffusion with multiplicative logarithmic corrections. Our predictions are supported by extensive numerical simulations on various examples of quantum and classical chains. Contrary to common belief, we demonstrate that even non-integrable spin chains can display a diverging spin diffusion constant at finite temperatures.

Delta-Bose gas on a half-line and the KPZ equation: boundary bound states and unbinding transitions

We revisit the Lieb-Liniger model for $n$ bosons in one dimension with attractive delta interaction in a half-space $\mathbb{R}^+$ with diagonal boundary conditions. This model is integrable for arbitrary value of $b \in \mathbb{R}$, the interaction parameter with the boundary. We show that its spectrum exhibits a sequence of transitions, as $b$ is decreased from the hard-wall case $b=+\infty$, with successive appearance of boundary bound states (or boundary modes) which we fully characterize. We apply these results to study the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation for the growth of a one-dimensional interface of height $h(x,t)$, on the half-space with boundary condition $\partial_x h(x,t)|_{x=0}=b$ and droplet initial condition at the wall. We obtain explicit expressions, valid at all time $t$ and arbitrary $b$, for the integer exponential (one-point) moments of the KPZ height field $\bar{e^{n h(0,t)}}$. From these moments we extract the large time limit of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the scaled KPZ height function. It exhibits a phase transition, related to the unbinding to the wall of the equivalent directed polymer problem, with two phases: (i) unbound for $b>-\frac{1}{2}$ where the PDF is given by the GSE Tracy-Widom distribution (ii) bound for $b<-\frac{1}{2}$, where the PDF is a Gaussian. At the critical point $b=-\frac{1}{2}$, the PDF is given by the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution.

Domain wall melting in spin-1 chains

In this letter we study the non-equilibrium spin dynamics in the non-integrable spin-1 XXZ chain, emerging after joining two macroscopic pure states with different magnetizations. Employing the so-called time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) we simulate the dynamics of the total magnetization in the right (left) half of the system up to times that are normally inaccessible by standard tDMRG methods. We identify three distinct phases depending on the anisotropy of the chain, corresponding to diffusive, marginally super-diffusive and insulating. We observe a transient ballistic behaviour with a crossover time that diverges as the isotropic point is approached. We conclude that on intermediate-large time scales the dynamics is well described by the integrable Landau-Lifschitz classical differential equation.

String-charge duality in integrable lattice models

We derive an explicit mapping between the spectra of conserved local operators of integrable quantum lattice models and the density distributions of their thermodynamic particle content. This is presented explicitly for the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain. As an application we discuss a quantum quench scenario, in both the gapped and critical regimes. We outline an exact technique which allows for an efficient implementation on periodic matrix product states. In addition, for certain simple product states we obtain analytic closed-form expressions in terms of solutions to Hirota functional relations. Remarkably, no reference to a maximal entropy principle is invoked.

Transport in Out-of-Equilibrium XXZ Chains: Exact Profiles of Charges and Currents

We consider the non-equilibrium time evolution of piecewise homogeneous states in the XXZ spin-1/2 chain, a paradigmatic example of an interacting integrable model. The initial state can be thought as the result of joining chains with different global properties. Through dephasing, at late times the state becomes locally equivalent to a stationary state which explicitly depends on position and time. We propose a kinetic theory of elementary excitations and derive a continuity equation which fully characterizes the thermodynamics of the model. We restrict ourselves to the gapless phase and consider cases where the chains are prepared: 1) at different temperatures; 2) in the ground state of two different models; 3) in the "domain wall" state. We find excellent agreement (any discrepancy is within the numerical error) between theoretical predictions and numerical simulations of time evolution based on TEBD algorithms. As a corollary, we unveil an exact expression for the expectation values of the charge currents in a generic stationary state.

Analytical expression for a post-quench time evolution of the one-body density matrix of one-dimensional hard-core bosons

We apply the logic of the quench action to give an exact analytical expression for the time evolution of the one-body density matrix after an interaction quench in the Lieb-Liniger model from the ground state of the free theory (BEC state) to the infinitely repulsive regime. In this limit there exists a mapping between the bosonic wavefuntions and the free fermionic ones but this does not help the computation of the one-body density matrix which is sensitive to particle statistics. The final expression, given in terms of the difference of the square root of two Fredholm determinants, can be numerically evaluated and is valid in the thermodynamic limit and for all times after the quench.

Complete Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in an interacting Theory

In integrable many-particle systems, it is widely believed that the stationary state reached at late times after a quantum quench can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) constructed from their extensive number of conserved charges. A crucial issue is then to identify a complete set of these charges, enabling the GGE to provide exact steady state predictions. Here we solve this long-standing problem for the case of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain by explicitly constructing a GGE which uniquely fixes the macrostate describing the stationary behaviour after a general quantum quench. A crucial ingredient in our method, which readily generalizes to other integrable models, are recently discovered quasi-local charges. As a test, we reproduce the exact post-quench steady state of the Neel quench problem obtained previously by means of the Quench Action method.

Density form factors of the 1D Bose gas for finite entropy states

We consider the Lieb-Liniger model for a gas of bosonic $δ-$interacting particles. Using Algebraic Bethe Ansatz results we compute the thermodynamic limit of the form factors of the density operator between finite entropy eigenstates such as finite temperature states or generic non-equilibrium highly excited states. These form factors are crucial building blocks to obtain the thermodynamic exact dynamic correlation functions of such physically relevant states. As a proof of principle we compute an approximated dynamic structure factor by including only the simplest types of particle-hole excitations and show the agreement with known results.

Relaxation dynamics of local observables in integrable systems

We show, using the quench action approach [Caux&Essler Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013)], that the whole post-quench time evolution of an integrable system in the thermodynamic limit can be computed with a minimal set of data which are encoded in what we denote the generalized single-particle overlap coefficient $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$. This function can be extracted from the thermodynamically leading part of the overlaps between the eigenstates of the model and the initial state. For a generic global quench the shape of $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$ in the low momentum limit directly gives the exponent for the power law decay to the effective steady state. As an example we compute the time evolution of the static density-density correlation in the interacting Lieb-Liniger gas after a quench from a Bose-Einstein condensate. This shows an approach to equilibrium with power law $t^{-3}$ which turns out to be independent of the post-quench interaction and of the considered observable.

A Gaudin-like determinant for overlaps of Néel and XXZ Bethe states

We derive a determinant expression for overlaps of Bethe states of the XXZ spin chain with the N{é}el state, the ground state of the system in the antiferromagnetic Ising limit. Our formula, of determinant form, is valid for generic system size. Interestingly, it is remarkably similar to the well-known Gaudin formula for the norm of Bethe states, and to another recently-derived overlap formula appearing in the Lieb-Liniger model.

Néel-XXZ state overlaps: odd particle numbers and Lieb-Liniger scaling limit

We specialize a recently-proposed determinant formula for the overlap of the zero-momentum Néel state with Bethe states of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain to the case of an odd number of downturned spins, showing that it is still of "Gaudin-like" form, similar to the case of an even number of down spins. We generalize this result to the overlap of $q$-raised Néel states with parity-invariant Bethe states lying in a nonzero magnetization sector. The generalized determinant expression can then be used to derive the corresponding determinants and their prefactors in the scaling limit to the Lieb-Liniger (LL) Bose gas. The odd number of down spins directly translates to an odd number of bosons. We furthermore give a proof that the Néel state has no overlap with non-parity-invariant Bethe states. This is based on a determinant expression for overlaps with general Bethe states that was obtained in the context of the XXZ chain with open boundary conditions. The statement that overlaps with non-parity-invariant Bethe states vanish is still valid in the scaling limit to LL which means that the BEC state has zero overlap with non-parity-invariant LL Bethe states.

Quench action approach for releasing the Néel state into the spin-1/2 XXZ chain

The steady state after a quantum quench from the Néel state to the anisotropic Heisenberg model for spin chains is investigated. Two methods that aim to describe the postquench non-thermal equilibrium, the generalized Gibbs ensemble and the quench action approach, are discussed and contrasted. Using the recent implementation of the quench action approach for this Néel-to-XXZ quench, we obtain an exact description of the steady state in terms of Bethe root densities, for which we give explicit analytical expressions. Furthermore, by developing a systematic small-quench expansion around the antiferromagnetic Ising limit, we analytically investigate the differences between the predictions of the two methods in terms of densities and postquench equilibrium expectation values of local physical observables. Finally, we discuss the details of the quench action solution for the quench to the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain. For this case we validate the underlying assumptions of the quench action approach by studying the large-system-size behavior of the overlaps between Bethe states and the Néel state.

Quenching the Anisotropic Heisenberg Chain: Exact Solution and Generalized Gibbs Ensemble Predictions

We study quenches in integrable spin-1/2 chains in which we evolve the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model with the anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For this nontrivially interacting situation, an application of the first-principles-based quench action method allows us to give an exact description of the postquench steady state in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a generalized Gibbs ensemble, implemented using all known local conserved charges, fails to reproduce the exact quench action steady state and to correctly predict postquench equilibrium expectation values of physical observables. This is supported by numerical linked-cluster calculations within the diagonal ensemble in the thermodynamic limit.

Solution for an interaction quench in the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas

We study a quench protocol where the ground state of a free many-particle bosonic theory in one dimension is let unitarily evolve in time under the integrable Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian of $δ$-interacting repulsive bosons. By using a recently-proposed variational method, we here obtain the exact non-thermal steady-state of the system in the thermodynamic limit, and discuss some of its main physical properties. Besides being a rare case of a thermodynamically exact solution to a truly interacting quench situation, this interestingly represents an example where a naive implementation of the generalized Gibbs ensemble fails.

Metastable criticality and the super Tonks-Girardeau gas

We consider a 1D Bose gas with attractive interactions in an out-of-equilibrium highly excited state containing no bound states. We show that relaxation processes in the gas are suppressed, making the system metastable on long timescales. We compute dynamical correlation functions, revealing the structure of excitations, an enhancement of umklapp correlations and new branches due to intermediate bound states. These features give a clear indication of the attractive regime and can be probed experimentally. We observe that, despite its out-of-equilibrium nature, the system displays critical behaviour: correlation functions are characterised by asymptotic power-law decay described by the Luttinger liquid framework.
