Discretization effects in $N_c=2$ QCD and Random Matrix Theory

We summarize the analytical solution of the Chiral Perturbation Theory for the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator of $N_c=2$ QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation. Results have been obtained for the quenched microscopic spectral density, the distribution of the chiralities over the real modes and the chiral condensate. The analytical results are compared with results from a Monte Carlo simulation of the corresponding Random Matrix Theory.

The Chiral Condensate of One-Flavor QCD and the Dirac Spectrum at θ=0

In a sector of fixed topological charge, the chiral condensate has a discontinuity given by the Banks-Casher formula also in the case of one-flavor QCD. However, at fixed θ-angle, the chiral condensate remains constant when the quark mass crosses zero. To reconcile these contradictory observations, we have evaluated the spectral density of one-flavor QCD at θ=0. For negative quark mass, it becomes a strongly oscillating function with a period that scales as the inverse space-time volume and an amplitude that increases exponentially with the space-time volume. As we have learned from QCD at nonzero chemical potential, if this is the case, an alternative to the Banks-Casher formula applies, and as we will demonstrate in this talk, for one-flavor QCD this results in a continuous chiral condensate. A special role is played by the topological zero modes which have to be taken into account exactly in order to get a finite chiral condensate in the thermodynamic limit.

The spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator and chiral random matrix theory: the threefold way

We argue that the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator near zero virtuality can be described by random matrix theory. As in the case of classical random matrix ensembles of Dyson we have three distinct classes: the chiral orthogonal ensemble (chGOE), the chiral unitary ensemble (chGUE) and the chiral symplectic ensemble (chGSE). They correspond to gauge groups $SU(2)$ in the fundamental representation, $SU(N_c), N_c \ge 3$ in the fundamental representation, and gauge groups for all $N_c$ in the adjoint representation, respectively. The joint probability density reproduces Leutwyler-Smilga sum rules.

Chiral random matrix theory and the spectrum of the Dirac operator near zero virtuality

We investigate the spectral properties of a random matrix model, which in the large $N$ limit, embodies the essentials of the QCD partition function at low energy. The exact spectral density and its pair correlation function are derived for an arbitrary number of flavors and zero topological charge. Their microscopic limit provide the master formulae for sum rules for the inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator as recently discussed by Leutwyler and Smilga.
