Quasi-local instantaneous charges asymptotics at spatial infinity

The article aims to analyze a construction of charges (conserved quantities) for the gravity field in the (3+1) decomposition. The construction is based on (3+1) splitting of conformal Yano--Killing (CYK) two-form. The splitting leads to charges, defined on Cauchy surface, which are combined from components of Weyl tensor and conformal Killing vector. The relations between the conserved quantities and its classical ADM counterparts are revisited. Asymptotic behavior of the conserved quantities is described. The charges are analyzed for a particular choice of initial data, among others, Bowen -- York spinning black hole.

Gauge-invariant quadratic approximation of quasi-local mass and its relation with Hamiltonian for gravitational field

Gauge invariant, Hamiltonian formulation of field dynamics within a compact region $Σ$ with boundary $\partial Σ$ is given for the gravitational field linearized over a Kottler metric. The boundary conditions which make the system autonomous are discussed and the corresponding Hamiltonian functional $\mathcal{H}_\text{Invariant}$ is calculated. It is shown that, under specific boundary conditions, the quasi-local Geroch--Hawking mass $\mathcal{H}_\text{Hawking}$ reduces to $\mathcal{H}_\text{Invariant}$ in the weak field approximation. This observation is a quasi-local version of the classical Brill--Deser result.

Localizing Energy in Fierz-Lanczos theory

We calculate energy carried by the massless spin-2 field using Fierz-Lanczos representation of the theory. For this purpose Hamiltonian formulation of the field dynamic is thoroughly analyzed. Final expression for the energy is very much analogous to the Maxwell energy in electrodynamics (spin-1 field) and displays the locality property. Known as a ``super-energy'' in gravity theory, this quantity differs considerably from the well understood gravitational field energy (represented in linear gravity by the quadratic term in Taylor expansion of the A.D.M. mass) which cannot be localized.

On the existence of rigid spheres in four-dimensional spacetime manifolds

This paper deals with the generalization of usual round spheres in the flat Minkowski spacetime to the case of a generic four-dimensional spacetime manifold $M$. We consider geometric properties of sphere-like submanifolds in $M$ and introduce conditions on external curvature and torsion, which lead to a definition of a {\em rigid sphere}. The main result is a local existence theorem concernig such spheres. For this purpose we apply the surjective implicit function theorem. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the linearized problem and leads to an eight-parameter family of solutions in case when the metric tensor $g$ of $M$ is from a certain neighbourhood of the flat Minkowski metric. This contribution continues the study of rigid spheres in (Class. Quantum Grav. \textbf{30} (2013), 175010, doi:10.1088/0264-9381/30/17/175010, 18 pp.).

Proof of Positive Energy Theorem by spacetime foliations

Here we present an alternative approach, requiring only basic tools of differential geometry. This method was conceived by Kijowski and first presented during the IV Marcel Grossman Meeting on General Relativity in Rome (1986). It was later published in a generalized form by J. Jezierski, J. Kijowski in 1987 (Positivity of total energy in general relativity, Physical Review D {\bf 36} (1987), 1041-4). We summarize these results briefly and present a new foliation gauge.

The 3+1 decomposition of Conformal Yano-Killing tensors and "momentary" charges for spin-2 field

The "fully charged" spin-2 field solution is presented. This is an analog of the Coulomb solution in electrodynamics and represents the "non-waving" part of the spin-2 field theory. Basic facts and definitions of the spin--2 field and conformal Yano-Killing tensors are introduced. Application of those two objects provides a precise definition of quasi-local gravitational charge. Next, the 3+1 decomposition leads to the construction of the momentary gravitational charges on initial surface which is applicable for Schwarzschild-like spacetimes.

Rigid spheres in Riemannian spaces

Choice of an appropriate (3+1)-foliation of spacetime or a (2+1)-foliation of the Cauchy space, leads often to a substantial simplification of various mathematical problems in General Relativity Theory. We propose a new method to construct such foliations. For this purpose we define a special family of topological two-spheres, which we call "rigid spheres". We prove that there is a four-parameter family of rigid spheres in a generic Riemannian three-manifold (in case of the flat Euclidean three-space these four parameters are: 3 coordinates of the center and the radius of the sphere). The rigid spheres can be used as building blocks for various ("spherical", "bispherical" etc.) foliations of the Cauchy space. This way a supertranslation ambiguity may be avoided. Generalization to the full 4D case is discussed. Our results generalize both the Huang foliations (cf. \cite{LHH}) and the foliations used by us (cf. \cite{JKL}) in the analysis of the two-body problem.

Thermo--hydrodynamics As a Field Theory

The field theoretical description of thermo-hydrodynamics is given. It is based on the duality between the physical space--time and the "material space-time" which we construct here. The material space appearing in a natural way in the canonical formulation of the hydrodynamics is completed with a material time playing role of the field potential for temperature. Both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations, the canonical structure, Poisson bracket, Nöther theorem and conservation laws are discussed.

The minimum length problem of loop quantum cosmology

The appearance of the big bounce (BB) in the evolution of the universe is analyzed in the setting of loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Making use of an idea of a minimum length turns classical Big Bang into BB. We argue why the spectrum of the kinematical area operator of loop quantum gravity cannot be used for the determination of this length. We find that the fundamental length, at the present stage of development of LQC, is a free parameter of this model.

On the existence of Kundt's metrics with compact sections of null hypersurfaces

It is shown that Kundt's metric for vacuum cannot be constructed when two-dimensional space-like sections of null hypersurfaces are compact, connected manifolds with no boundary unless they are tori or spheres, i.e. higher genus $\mathbf{g} \geq 2$ is excluded by vacuum Einstein equations. The so-called {\em basic equation} (resulting from Einstein equations) is examined. This is a non-linear PDE for unknown covector field and unknown Riemannian structure on the two-dimensional manifold. It implies several important results derived in this paper. It arises not only for Kundt's class but also for degenerate Killing horizons and vacuum degenerate isolated horizons.

Asymptotic conformal Yano-Killing tensors for asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetimes and conserved quantities

Conformal rescaling of conformal Yano--Killing tensors and relations between Yano and CYK tensors are discussed. Pullback of these objects to a submanifold is used to construct all solutions of a CYK equation in anti-de Sitter and de Sitter spacetimes. Properties of asymptotic conformal Yano--Killing tensors are examined for asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Explicit asymptotic forms of them are derived. The results are used to construct asymptotic charges in asymptotic AdS spacetime. Well known examples like Schwarzschild-AdS, Kerr-AdS and NUT-AdS are examined carefully in the construction of the concept of energy, angular momentum and dual mass in asymptotic AdS spacetime.

Conformal Yano-Killing tensor for the Kerr metric and conserved quantities

Properties of (skew-symmetric) conformal Yano--Killing tensors are reviewed. Explicit forms of three symmetric conformal Killing tensors in Kerr spacetime are obtained from the Yano--Killing tensor. The relation between spin-2 fields and solutions to the Maxwell equations is used in the construction of a new conserved quantity which is quadratic in terms of the Weyl tensor. The formula obtained is similar to the functional obtained from the Bel--Robinson tensor and is examined in Kerr spacetime. A new interpretation of the conserved quantity obtained is proposed.

Unconstrained degrees of freedom for gravitational waves, $β$--foliations and spherically symmetric initial data

A new parameterization of unconstrained degrees of freedom for gravitational field, used in Classical and Quantum Gravity {\bf 11}, 1055-1068 (1994), has been generalized to one-parameter family of such parameterizations, depending on a real parameter $β\in [0,2]$. The description introduced in CQG 11, 1055 corresponds to the special choice $β=0$. The method is closely related to the proof of the positivity of the energy presented in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 36}, 1041-1044 (1987) where $β$-foliations have been introduced (see also applications to black holes dynamics in Classical and Quantum Gravity {\bf 6}, 1535-1539 (1989) and Acta Physica Polonica B {\bf 25}, 1413-17 (1994)). Spherically symmetric initial data corresponding to trivial degrees of freedom is analyzed along these lines. In particular, the quasi-local energy content of the Schwarzschild initial data is analyzed for different choices of the $β$-gauge.

Geometry of crossing null shells

New geometric objects on null thin layers are introduced and their importance for crossing null-like shells are discussed. The Barrabès--Israel equations are represented in a new geometric form and they split into decoupled system of equations for two different geometric objects: tensor density ${\bf G}^a{_b}$ and vector field $I$. Continuity properties of these objects through a crossing sphere are proved. In the case of spherical symmetry Dray--t'Hooft--Redmount formula results from continuity property of the corresponding object.

CYK Tensors, Maxwell Field and Conserved Quantities for Spin-2 Field

Starting from an important application of Conformal Yano--Killing tensors for the existence of global charges in gravity, some new observations at $\scri^+$ are given. They allow to define asymptotic charges (at future null infinity) in terms of the Weyl tensor together with their fluxes through $\scri^+$. It occurs that some of them play a role of obstructions for the existence of angular momentum. Moreover, new relations between solutions of the Maxwell equations and the spin-2 field are given. They are used in the construction of new conserved quantities which are quadratic in terms of the Weyl tensor. The obtained formulae are similar to the functionals obtained from the Bel--Robinson tensor.

Energy and angular momentum of the weak gravitational waves on the Schwarzschild background -- quasilocal gauge-invariant formulation

It is shown that the axial and polar perturbations of the spherically symmetric black hole can be described in a gauge-invariant way. The reduced phase space describing gravitational waves outside of the horizon is described by the gauge-invariant quantities. Both degrees of freedom fulfill generalized scalar wave equation. For the axial degree of freedom the radial part of the equation corresponds to the Regge-Wheeler result (Phys. Rev. 108, 1063-1069 (1957)) and for the polar one we get Zerilli result (Phys. Rev. D2, 2141-2160 (1970)), see also Chandrasekhar (The Mathematical Theory of Black Holes,(Clarendon Press Oxford, 1983)), Moncrief (Annals of Physics 88, 323-342 (1974)) for both. An important ingredient of the analysis is the concept of quasilocality which does duty for the separation of the angular variables in the usual approach. Moreover, there is no need to represent perturbations by normal modes (with time dependence $\exp(-ikt)$), we have fields in spacetime and the Cauchy problem for them is well defined outside of the horizon. The reduced symplectic structure explains the origin of the axial and polar invariants. It allows to introduce an energy and angular momentum for the gravitational waves which is invariant with respect to the gauge transformations. Both generators represent quadratic approximation of the ADM nonlinear formulae in terms of the perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric. We also discuss the boundary-initial value problem for the linearized Einstein equations on a Schwarzschild background outside of the horizon.

Bondi mass in classical field theory

We analyze three classical field theories based on the wave equation: scalar field, electrodynamics and linearized gravity. We derive certain generating formula on a hyperboloid and on a null surface for them. The linearized Einstein equations are analyzed around null infinity. It is shown how the dynamics can be reduced to gauge invariant quanitities in a quasi-local way. The quasi-local gauge-invariant ``density'' of the hamiltonian is derived on the hyperboloid and on the future null infinity. The result gives a new interpretation of the Bondi mass loss formula. We show also how to define angular momentum. Starting from affine approach for Einstein equations we obtain variational formulae for Bondi-Sachs type metrics related with energy and angular momentum generators. The original van der Burg asymptotic hierarchy is revisited and the relations between linearized and asymptotic nonlinear situations are established. We discuss also supertranslations, Newman-Penrose charges and Janis solutions.

On the relation between metric and spin--2 form. of lin. Ein. theory

A twenty--dimensional space of charged solutions of spin--2 equations is proposed. The relation with extended (via dilatation) Poincaré group is analyzed. Locally, each solution of the theory may be described in terms of a potential, which can be interpreted as a metric tensor satisfying linearized Einstein equations. Globally, the non--singular metric tensor exists if and only if 10 among the above 20 charges do vanish. The situation is analogous to that in classical electrodynamics, where vanishing of magnetic monopole implies the global existence of the electro--magnetic potentials. The notion of {\em asymptotic conformal Yano--Killing tensor} is defined and used as a basic concept to introduce an inertial frame in General Relativity via asymptotic conditions at spatial infinity. The introduced class of asymptotically flat solutions is free of supertranslation ambiguities.
