Controllable emergent spatial spin modulation in Sr2IrO4 by in situ shear strain

Symmetric anisotropic interaction can be ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic at the same time but for different crystallographic axes. We show that inducing competition of anisotropic interactions of orthogonal irreducible representations represents a general route to obtain new exotic magnetic states. We demonstrate it here by observing the emergence of a continuously tunable 12-layer spatial spin modulation when distorting the square lattice planes in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Sr2IrO4 under in situ shear strain. This translation-symmetry-breaking phase is a result of an unusual strain activated anisotropic interaction which is at the 4th order and competing with the inherent quadratic anisotropic interaction. Such a mechanism of competing anisotropy is distinct from that among the ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and/or the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and it could be widely applicable and highly controllable in low dimensional magnets.

Hole doping in a negative charge transfer insulator

$RE$NiO$_3$ is a negative charge transfer energy system and exhibits a temperature-driven metal-insulator transition (MIT), which is also accompanied by a bond disproportionation (BD) transition. In order to explore how hole doping affects the BD transition, we have investigated the electronic structure of single-crystalline thin films of Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$NiO$_3$ by synchrotron based experiments and {\it ab-initio} calculations. For a small value of $x$, we find that the doped holes are localized on one or more Ni sites around the dopant Ca$^{2+}$ ions, while the BD state for the rest of the lattice remains intact. The effective charge transfer energy ($Δ$) increases with Ca concentration and the formation of BD phase is not favored above a critical $x$, suppressing the insulating phase. Our present study firmly demonstrates that the appearance of BD mode is essential for the MIT and settles a long-standing debate about the role of structural distortions for the MIT of the $RE$NiO$_3$ series.

Comprehensive Control of Metamagnetic Transition of Antiferromagnetic Mott Insulator Sr2IrO4 by in-situ Anisotropic Strain

Metamagnetism in antiferromagnets exhibits distinct critical behaviors and dynamics when invoking spin reversal and rotation. Here we show a 0.05% anisotropic strain suffices to in-situ modulate the metamagnetic critical field of the Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 by over 50%, enabling electrical switching of the transition. Resonant x-ray scattering and model simulation reveal that the transition is completely tuned from the spin-flop to spin-flip type as the strain introduces C4-symmetry-breaking magnetic anisotropy. Simultaneous transport study indicates the metamagnetic responses are reflected in the large elasto- and magnetoconductance, highlighting the active charge degree of freedom in the spin-orbit-coupled Mott state and its potential for spin-electronics.

Magnetic phase transitions and spin density distribution in the molecular multiferroic GaV$_4$S$_8$ system

We have carried out neutron diffraction and small angle neutron scattering measurements on a high quality single crystal of the cubic lacunar spinel multiferroic, GaV$_4$S$_8$, as a function of magnetic field and temperature to determine the magnetic properties for the single electron that is located on the tetrahedrally coordinated V$_4$ molecular unit. Our results are in good agreement with the structural transition at 44 K from cubic to rhombohedral symmetry where the system becomes a robust ferroelectric, while long range magnetic order develops below 13 K in the form of an incommensurate cycloidal magnetic structure, which can transform into a Néel-type skyrmion phase in a modest applied magnetic field. Below 5.9(3) K, the crystal enters a ferromagnetic phase, and we find the magnetic order parameter indicates a long range ordered ground state with an ordered moment of 0.23(1) $μ_\mathrm{B}$ per V ion. Both polarized and unpolarized neutron data in the ferroelectric-paramagnetic phase have been measured to determine the magnetic form factor. The data are consistent with a model of the single spin being uniformly distributed across the V$_4$ molecular unit, rather than residing on the single apical V ion, in substantial agreement with the results of first-principles theory. In the magnetically ordered state, polarized neutron measurements are important since both the cycloidal and ferromagnetic order parameters are clearly coupled to the ferroelectricity, causing the structural peaks to be temperature and field dependent. For the ferromagnetic ground state, the spins are locked along the $[1,1,1]$ direction by a surprisingly large anisotropy.

Possible quantum paramagnetism in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

The effect of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO$_2$ layers is readily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17-20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between $\mathrm{J_{eff}}=1/2$ magnetic moments within the insulating IrO$_2$ layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended $5d$ orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom.

Strong anisotropy within a Heisenberg model in the J=1/2 insulating state of Sr2Ir0.8Ru0.2O4

The dispersive magnetic excitations in Sr2IrO4 have previously been well described within an isospin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice that revealed parallels with La2CuO4. Here we investigate the inelastic spectra of Sr2Ir0.8Ru0.2O4 with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L3-edge. The results are well described using linear spin-wave theory within a similar Heisenberg model applicable to Sr2IrO4, however the disorder induced by the substitution of 20% Ir4+ ions for Ru4+ removes longer range exchange interactions. A large spin-gap (40 meV) is measured indicating strong anisotropy from spin-orbit coupling that is manifest due to the altered magnetic structure in Sr2Ir0.8Ru0.2O4 with c-axis aligned moments compared to the basal plane moments in the parent. Collectively the results indicate the robustness of a Heisenberg model description even when the magnetic structure is altered and the J=1/2 moments diluted.

Evolution of competing magnetic order in the Jeff=1/2 insulating state of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4

We investigate the magnetic properties of the series Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 with neutron, resonant x-ray and magnetization measurements. The results indicate an evolution and coexistence of magnetic structures via a spin flop transition from ab-plane to c-axis collinear order as the 5d Ir4+ ions are replaced with an increasing concentration of 4d Ru4+ ions. The magnetic structures within the ordered regime of the phase diagram (x<0.3) are reported. Despite the changes in magnetic structure no alteration of the Jeff=1/2 ground state is observed. The behavior of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 is consistent with electronic phase separation and diverges from a standard scenario of hole doping. The role of lattice alterations with doping on the magnetic and insulating behavior is considered. The results presented here provide insight into the magnetic insulating states in strong spin-orbit coupled materials and the role perturbations play in altering the behavior.

Anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in single-crystalline CeFeAsO as seen via high-resolution x-ray diffraction

Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies of CeFeAsO reveal strong anisotropy in the charge correlation lengths along or perpendicular to the in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) wave-vector at low temperatures, indicating an anisotropic two-dimensional magnetoelastic coupling. The high-resolution setup allows to distinctly monitor each of the twin domains by virtue of a finite misfit angle between them that follows the order parameter. In addition, we find that the in-plane correlations, above the orthorhombic (O)-to-tetragonal (T) transition, are shorter than those in each of the domains in the AFM phase, indicating a distribution of the in-plane lattice constants. This strongly suggests that the phase above the structural O-to-T transition is virtually T with strong O-T fluctuations that are probably induced by spin fluctuations.

Jeff=1/2 Mott spin-orbit insulating state close to the cubic limit in Ca4IrO6

The Jeff=1/2 state is manifested in systems with large cubic crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling that are comparable to the on-site Coulomb interaction, U. 5d transition metal oxides host parameters in this regime and strong evidence for this state in Sr2IrO4, and additional iridates, has been presented. All the candidates, however, deviate from the cubic crystal field required to provide an unmixed canonical Jeff=1/2 state, impacting the development of a robust model of this novel insulating and magnetic state. We present results that not only show Ca4IrO6 hosts the state, but furthermore uniquely resides close to the ideal case required for an unmixed Jeff=1/2 state.

Dimensionality Driven Spin-Flop Transition in Layered Iridates

Using resonant x-ray diffraction, we observe an easy c-axis collinear antiferromagnetic structure for the bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, a significant contrast to the single layer Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ with in-plane canted moments. Based on a microscopic model Hamiltonian, we show that the observed spin-flop transition as a function of number of IrO$_2$ layers is due to strong competition among intra- and inter-layer bond-directional pseudo-dipolar interactions of the spin-orbit entangled $J_{eff}$=1/2 moments. With this we unravel the origin of anisotropic exchange interactions in a Mott insulator in the strong spin-orbit coupling regime, which holds the key to the various types of unconventional magnetism proposed in 5$d$ transition metal oxides.

Magnetic structural change of Sr2IrO4 upon Mn doping

The layered 5d transition metal oxide Sr2IrO4 has been shown to host a novel Jeff=1/2 Mott spin orbit insulating state with antiferromagnetic ordering, leading to comparisons with the layered cuprates. Here we study the effect of substituting Mn for Ir in single crystals of Sr2Ir0.9Mn0.1O4 through an investigation involving bulk measurements and resonant x-ray and neutron scattering. We observe a new long range magnetic structure emerge upon doping through a reordering of the spins from the basal plane to the c-axis with a reduced ordering temperature compared to Sr2IrO4. The strong enhancement of the magnetic x-ray scattering intensity at the L3 edge relative to the L2 edge indicates that the Jeff=1/2 state is robust and capable of hosting a variety of ground states.

Magnetically polarized Ir dopant atoms in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the magnetic polarization of the Ir $5d$ dopant states in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x=0.027(2)$ using Ir $L_3$ edge x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Despite the fact that doping partially suppresses the antiferromagnetic transition, we find that magnetic order survives around the Ir dopant sites. The Ir states are magnetically polarized with commensurate stripe-like antiferromagnetic order and long correlations lengths, $ξ_{\text{mag}}>$ 2800 and $>$850 Å, in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, respectively, driven by their interaction with the Fe spins. This Ir magnetic order persists up to the Néel transition of the majority Fe spins at $T_N=74(2)$ K. At 5 K we find that magnetic order co-exists microscopically with superconductivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. The energy dependence of the XRMS through the Ir $L_3$ edge shows a non-Lorentzian lineshape, which we explain in terms of interference between Ir resonant scattering and Fe non-resonant magnetic scattering.

Orbital control in strained ultra-thin LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices

In pursuit of rational control of orbital polarization, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of single unit cell superlattices of the correlated metal LaNiO$_3$ and the band insulator LaAlO$_3$. Polarized x-ray absorption spectra show a distinct asymmetry in the orbital response under strain. A splitting of orbital energies consistent with octahedral distortions is found for the case of compressive strain. In sharp contrast, for tensile strain, no splitting is found although a strong orbital polarization is present. Density functional theory calculations including a Hubbard U term reveal that this asymmetry is a result of the interplay of strain and confinement induces octahedral rotations and distortions and altered covalency in the bonding across the interfacial Ni-O-Al apical oxygen, leading to a charge disporportionation at the Ni sites for tensile strain.

Probing the three-dimensional strain inhomogeneity and equilibrium elastic properties of single crystal Ni nanowires

We employ three dimensional x-ray coherent diffraction imaging to map the lattice strain distribution, and to probe the elastic properties of a single crystalline Ni (001) nanowire grown vertically on an amorphous Si02 || Si substrate. The reconstructed density maps show that with increasing wire width, the equilibrium compressive stress in the core region decreases sharply while the surface tensile strain increases, and gradually trends to a nonzero constant. We use the retrieved projection of lattice distortion to predict the Young's Modulus of the wire based on the elasticity theory.

Character of the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the parent and electron doped BaFe2As2 compounds

We present a combined high-resolution x-ray diffraction and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) study of as-grown BaFe2As2. The structural/magnetic transitions must be described as a two-step process. At T_S = 134.5 K we observe the onset of a second-order structural transition from the high-temperature paramagnetic tetragonal structure to a paramagnetic orthorhombic phase, followed by a discontinuous step in the structural order parameter that is coincident with a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T_N = 133.75 K. These data, together with detailed high-resolution x-ray studies of the structural transition in lightly doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 and Ba(Fe{1-x}Rh{x})2As2 compounds, show that the structural and AFM transitions do, in fact, occur at slightly different temperatures in the parent BaFe2As2 compound, and evolve towards split secondorder transitions as the doping concentration is increased. We estimate the composition for the tricritical point for Co-doping and employ a mean-field approach to show that our measurements can be explained by the inclusion of an anharmonic term in the elastic free energy and magneto-elastic coupling in the form of an emergent Ising-nematic degree of freedom.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction in CeTe2 Induced by Charge Density Wave: ARPES Study

Electronic structures of a charge-density-wave CDW system CeTe_2-xSb_x (x=0, 0.05) have been investigated by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The observed Fermi surface (FS) agrees very well with the calculated FS for the undistorted CeTe_2 both in shapes and sizes. The metallic states crossing the Fermi level(E_F) are observed in ARPES. The carriers near E_F have mainly the Te(1) 5p character, with the negligible contribution from Ce 4f states to the CDW formation. The supercell (shadow) bands and the corresponding very weak FS's are found to arise from band-folding due to the interaction with Ce-Te(2) layers. This work shows that the origin of the CDW formation in CeTe_2 is the FS nesting and that the CDW modulation vector is along Gamma-X (Q_CDW ~ X)

Magnetic order in GdBiPt studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Rare earth (R) half-Heusler compounds, RBiPt, exhibit a wide spectrum of novel ground states. Recently, GdBiPt has been proposed as a potential antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI). We have employed x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to elucidate the microscopic details of the magnetic structure in GdBiPt below T_N = 8.5 K. Experiments at the Gd L_2 absorption edge show that the Gd moments order in an antiferromagnetic stacking along the cubic diagonal [1 1 1] direction satisfying the requirement for an AFTI, where both time-reversal symmetry and lattice translational symmetry are broken, but their product is conserved.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering in Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 determined by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering at the Fe K-edge

We describe x-ray resonant magnetic diffraction measurements at the Fe K-edge of both the parent BaFe2As2 and superconducting Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2 compounds. From these high-resolution measurements we conclude that the magnetic structure is commensurate for both compositions. The energy spectrum of the resonant scattering is in reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations using the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method with a local density functional.

Strain-mediated metal-insulator transition in epitaxial ultra-thin films of NdNiO3

We have synthesized epitaxial NdNiO$_{3}$ ultra-thin films in a layer-by-layer growth mode under tensile and compressive strain on SrTiO$_{3}$ (001) and LaAlO$_3$ (001), respectively. A combination of X-ray diffraction, temperature dependent resistivity, and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been applied to elucidate electronic and structural properties of the samples. In contrast to the bulk NdNiO$_{3}$, the metal-insulator transition under compressive strain is found to be completely quenched, while the transition remains under the tensile strain albeit modified from the bulk behavior.

Magnetic ordering in EuRh2As2 studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Element-specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigations were performed to determine the magnetic structure of Eu in EuRh2As2. In the temperature range from 46 K down to 6 K, an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (ICM)structure with a temperature dependent propagation vector (0 0 0.9) coexists with a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CM) structure. Angular-dependent measurements of the magnetic intensity indicate that the magnetic moments lie in the tetragonal basal plane and are ferromagnetically aligned within the a-b plane for both magnetic structures. The ICM structure is a spiral-like magnetic structure with a turn angle of 162 deg between adjacent Eu planes. In the CM structure, this angle is 180 deg. These results are consistent with band-structure calculations which indicate a strong sensitivity of the magnetic configuration on the Eu valence.
