Multimode collective scattering of light in free space by a cold atomic gas

We have studied collective recoil lasing by a cold atomic gas, scattering photons from an incident laser into many radiation modes in free space. The model consists of a system of classical equations for the atomic motion of N atoms, where the radiation field has been adiabatically eliminated. We performed numerical simulations using a molecular dynamics code, Pretty Efficient Parallel Coulomb Solver or PEPC, to track the trajectories of the atoms. These simulations show the formation of an atomic density grating and collective enhancement of scattered light, both of which are sensitive to the shape and orientation of the atomic cloud. In the case of an initially circular cloud, the dynamical evolution of the cloud shape plays an important role in the development of the density grating and collective scattering. The ability to use efficient molecular dynamics codes will be a useful tool for the study of the multimode interaction between light and cold gases.

Quantum dynamics of Bose-polaron in a $d$-dimensional Bose Einstein condensate

We study the quantum motion of an impurity atom immersed in a Bose Einstein condensate in arbitrary dimension. The Bogoliubov excitations of the Bose Einstein condensate act as a bosonic bath for the impurity. We present a detailed derivation of the $d$-dimensional Langevin equations that describe the quantum dynamics of the system, and of the associated generalized tensor that describes the spectral density in the full generality. When the impurity is not trapped, we calculate the mean square displacement, showing that the motion is super diffusive. We obtain also explicit expressions for the super diffusive coefficient in the small and large temperature limits. We find that, in the latter case, the maximal value of this coefficient is the same in all dimensions. We study also the behaviour of the average energy and compare the results for various dimensions. In the trapped case, we study squeezing and find that the stronger position squeezing can be obtained in lower dimensions. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the particle's motion, and find that it increases with dimensionality.

Axion production in unstable magnetized plasmas: an active source of dark-matter

Axions, the hypothetical particles restoring the charge-parity symmetry in the strong sector of the Standard Model, and one of the most prone candidates for dark matter, are well-known to interact with plasmas. In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 181803 (2018)], we have shown that if the plasma dynamically responds to the presence of axions, then a new quasi-particle (the axion plasmon-polariton) can be formed, being at the basis of a new generation of plasma-based detection techniques. In this work, we exploit the axion-plasmon hybridization to actively produce axions in streaming magnetized plasmas. We show that, if we make the plasma unstable via the injection of an energetic electron beam (beam-plasma instability), an appreciable production rate of few axions per minute can be achieved. The produced axions can then be detected by Primakoff decay into photons.

Amplification and generation of ultra-intense twisted laser pulses via stimulated Raman scattering

Twisted Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, with orbital angular momentum and characterised by doughnut shaped intensity profiles, provide a transformative set of tools and research directions in a growing range of fields and applications, from super-resolution microcopy and ultra-fast optical communications to quantum computing and astrophysics. The impact of twisted light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high gradient positron acceleration. The production of ultrahigh intensity twisted laser pulses could then also have a broad influence on relativistic laser-matter interactions. Here we show theoretically and with ab-initio three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, that stimulated Raman backscattering can generate and amplify twisted lasers to Petawatt intensities in plasmas. This work may open new research directions in non-linear optics and high energy density science, compact plasma based accelerators and light sources.

High orbital angular momentum harmonic generation

We identify and explore a high orbital angular momentum (OAM) harmonics generation and amplification mechanism that manipulates the OAM independently of any other laser property, by preserving the initial laser wavelength, through stimulated Raman backscattering in a plasma. The high OAM harmonics spectra can extend at least up to the limiting value imposed by the paraxial approximation. We show with theory and particle-in-cell simulations that the orders of the OAM harmonics can be tuned according to a selection rule that depends on the initial OAM of the interacting waves. We illustrate the high OAM harmonics generation in a plasma using several examples including the generation of prime OAM harmonics. The process can also be realised in any nonlinear optical Kerr media supporting three-wave interactions.

Bump-on-tail instability of twisted excitations in rotating cold atomic clouds

We develop a kinetic theory for twisted density waves (phonons), carrying a finite amount of orbital angular momentum, in large magneto optical traps, where the collective processes due to the exchange of scattered photons are considered. Explicit expressions for the dispersion relation and for the kinetic (Landau) damping are derived and contributions from the orbital angular momentum are discussed. We show that for rotating clouds, exhibiting ring-shaped structures, phonons carrying orbital angular momentum can cross the instability threshold and grow out of noise, while the usual plane wave solutions are kinetically damped.

Equation of state of a laser cooled gas

We experimentally determine the equation of state of a laser cooled gas. By employing the Lane-Emden formalism, widely used in astrophysics, we derive the equilibrium atomic profiles in large magneto optical traps where the thermodynamic effects are cast in a polytropic equation of state. The effects of multiple scattering of light are included, which results in a generalized Lane-Emden equation for the atomic profiles. A detailed experimental investigation reveals an excellent agreement with the model, with a two-fold significance. In one hand, we can infer on the details of the equation of state of the system, from an ideal gas to a correlated phase due to an effective electrical charge for the atoms, which is accurately described by a microscopical description of the effective electrostatic interaction. On the other hand, we are able map the effects of multiple scattering onto directly controllable experimental variables, which paves the way to subsequent experimental investigations of this collective interaction.

Excitation of high orbital angular momentum Rydberg states with Laguerre-Gauss beams

We consider the excitation of Rydberg states through photons carrying an intrinsic orbital angular momentum degree of freedom. Laguerre-Gauss modes, with a helical wave-front structure, correspond to such a set of laser beams, which carry some units of orbital angular momentum in their propagation direction. We demonstrate that, in a proper geometrical setting, this orbital angular momentum can be transferred to the internal degrees of freedom of the atoms, thus violating the standard dipolar selection rules. Higher orbital angular momentum states become accessible through a single photon excitation process. We investigate how the spacial structure of the Laguerre-Gauss beam affects the radial coupling strength, assuming the simplest case of hydrogen-like wavefunctions. Finally we discuss a generalization of the angular momentum coupling, in order to include the effects of the fine and hyperfine splitting, in the context of the Wigner-Eckart theorem.

Nonlinear laser driven donut wakefields for positron and electron acceleration

We show analytically and through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that non-linear wakefields driven by Laguerre-Gaussian laser pulses can lead to hollow electron self-injection and positron acceleration. We find that higher order lasers can drive donut shaped blowout wakefields with strong positron accelerating gradients comparable to those of a spherical bubble. Corresponding positron focusing forces can be more than an order of magnitude stronger than electron focusing forces in a spherical bubble. Required laser intensities and energies to reach the non-linear donut shaped blowout are within state-of-the-art experimental conditions.

Phonon-polaritons in Bose-Einstein condensates induced by Casimir-Polder interaction with graphene

We consider the mechanical coupling between a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a graphene sheet via the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field which are at the origin of the so-called Casimir-Polder potential. By deriving a self-consistent set of equations governing the dynamics of the condensate and the flexural (out-of-plane) modes of the graphene, we can show the formation of a new type of purely acoustic quasi-particle excitation, a phonon-polariton resulting from the coherent superposition of quanta of flexural and Bogoliubov modes.

Plasma wakefields driven by intense, broadband, incoherent electromagnetic radiation

Non-linear wave-driven processes in plasmas are normally described by either a monochromatic pump wave that couples to other monochromatic waves, or as a random phase wave coupling to other random phase waves. An alternative approach involves an incoherent, random or broadband pump coupling to monochromatic and/or coherent structures in the plasma. This approach can be implemented through the wave kinetic model. In this model, the incoming pump wave is described by either a bunch (for coherent waves) or a sea (for random phase waves) of quasi-particles. A particle-in-cell type code has been developed to perform numerical simulations of such interactions using the quasi-particle approach. This code allows for a comparatively easy description of both random phase and coherent pump pulses coupling to slow electrostatic plasma waves, while providing an extended range of powerful diagnostics leading to a deeper physical insight into the dynamics of the fast waves. As an example, the propagation of short, intense laser pulses through a plasma has been simulated. A sample of the phenomena that can be studied for this case includes modulational instabilities, photon wave breaking and turbulence, and pulse compression, stretching, and chirping. The extensibility of the numerical implementation to other types of fast wave-slow wave interactions is also discussed.

Satellite rings and normal modes in rotating clouds of ultra cold atoms

The multiple scattering of light in a gas of ultra cold atoms is responsible for many exciting features observed in magneto-optical traps including the collective behavior forced by a Coulomb like potential. This field also induces plasma like phenomena in the cloud which allows the treatment of the system as a one component trapped plasma. With a fluid description and casting the thermodynamical behavior in the form of a polytropic equation of state we investigate the equilibrium profiles of rotating clouds and its dependence on the experiment characteristics. Numerical solutions predict the formation of stable orbital modes both in rotating and non rotating clouds. We also investigate the normal modes on such rotating systems.

Polytropic equilibrium and normal modes in cold atomic traps

The compressibility limit of a cold gas confined in a magneto-optical trap due to multiple scattering of light is a long-standing problem. This scattering mechanism induces long-range interactions in the system, which is responsible for the occurrence of plasma-like phenomena. In the present paper, we investigate the importance of the long-range character of the mediated atom-atom interaction in the equilibrium and dynamical features of a magneto-optical trap. Making use of a hydrodynamical formulation, we derive a generalized Lane-Emden equation modeling the polytropic equilibirum of a magneto-optical trap, allowing us to describe the cross-over between the two limiting cases: temperature dominated and multiple-scattering dominated traps. The normal collective modes of the system are also computed.

Twisted Phonons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider elementary excitations in a Bose Einstein condensate, carrying a finite amount of angular momentum. We show that these elementary excitations are modified Bogoliubov oscillations, or phonons with an helical wave structure. These twisted phonon modes can contribute to the total vorticity in a quantum fluid, thus complementing the contribution of the traditional quantum vortices. Linear and nonlinear versions of twisted phonon modes will be discussed. New envelope soliton solutions are shown to exist in a condensate.

Production of bright entangled photons from moving optical boundaries

We discuss a mechanism of generating two separable beams of light with high degree of entanglement in momentum using a fast and sharp optical boundary. Three regimes of light generation are identified depending on the number of resonant interactions between the optical perturbation and the electromagnetic field. The intensity of the process is discussed in terms of the relevant physical parameters: variation of refractive index and apparent velocity of the optical boundary. Our results suggest a different class of generation entangled light robust against thermal degradation by exciting zero point fluctuations using parametric resonant optical modulations.

Classical Rotons in Cold Atomic Traps

We predict the emergence of a roton minimum in the dispersion relation of elementary excitations in cold atomic gases in the presence of diffusive light. In large magneto-topical traps, multiple-scattering of light is responsible for the collective behavior of the system, which is associated to an effective Coulomb-like interaction between the atoms. In optically thick clouds, the re-scattered light undergoes diffusive propagation, which is responsible for a stochastic short-range force acting on the atoms. We show that the dynamical competition between these two forces results on a new polariton mode, which exhibits a roton minimum. Making use of Feynman's formula for the static structure factor, we show that the roton minimum is related to the appearance of long-range order in the system.

Laser scattering by density fluctuations of ultra-cold atoms in a magneto-optical trap

We study the spectrum of density fluctuations in the ultra-cold gas of neutral atoms, confined in a magneto-optical trap. We determine the corresponding amplitude and spectra of laser light scattered by this medium. We derive an expression for the dynamical structure function, by using a test particle method. We propose to use the collective laser scattering as a diagnostic method for the microscopic properties of the ultra-cold matter. This will also allow us to check on the atomic correlations which are mediated by the collective mean field inside the gas.

Driven collective instabilities in magneto-optical traps: a fluid-dynamical approach

We present a theoretical model to describe an instability mechanism in ultra-cold gases, where long-range interactions are taken into account. Focusing on the nonlinear coupling between the collective (plasma-like) and the center-of-mass modes, we show that the resulting dynamics is governed by a parametric equation of the generalized Mathieu type and compute the corresponding stability chart. We apply our model to typical ranges of magneto-optical traps (MOT) parameters and find a good agreement with previous experimental observations.

Photon Orbital Angular Momentum and Mass in a Plasma Vortex

We analyse the Anderson-Higgs mechanism of photon mass acquisition in a plasma and study the contribution to the mass from the orbital angular momentum acquired by a beam of photons when it crosses a spatially structured charge distribution. To this end we apply Proca-Maxwell equations in a static plasma with a particular spatial distribution of free charges, notably a plasma vortex, that is able to impose orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto light. In addition to the mass acquisition of the conventional Anderson-Higgs mechanism, we find that the photon acquires an additional mass from the OAM and that this mass reduces the Proca photon mass.

Plasmon wakefields and dispersive properties of metallic nanostructures

We investigate the excitation of electrostatic wakefields in metallic nanostructures (nanowires) due to the propagation of a short electron pulse. For that purpose, a dispersive (nonlocal) dielectric response of the system is considered, accounting for both the finiteness of the system and the quantum (Bohm) difraction of the conduction electron band, generalizing the results obtained previously in the literature [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{103}, 097403 (2009)]. We discuss on the stability conditions of wakefields and show that the underling mechanism can be useful to investigate new sources of radiation in the extreme-ultra-violet (XUV) range.

Rossby waves in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We predict and describe a new collective mode in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, which is very similar to the Rossby waves in geophysics. In the regime of fast rotation, the Coriolis force dominates the dynamics and acts as a restoring force for acoustic-drift waves along the condensate. We derive a nonlinear equation that includes the effects of both the zero-point pressure and the anharmonicity of the trap. It is shown that such waves have negative phase speed, propagating in the opposite sense of the rotation. We discuss different equilibrium configurations and compare with those resulting from the Thomas-Fermi approximation.

preprint2009arXiv

A phonon laser in ultra-cold matter

We show the possible excitation of a phonon laser instability in an ultra-cold atomic gas confined in a magneto-optical trap. Such an effect results from a negative Landau damping of the collective density perturbations in the gas, leading to the coherent emission of phonons. This laser instability can be driven by a blue-detuned laser superimposed to the usual red-detuning laser beams which usually provide the cooling mechanism. Threshold conditions, instability growth rates and saturation levels are derived. This work generalizes, on theoretical grounds, the recent results obtained with single ion phonon laser, to an ultra-cold atomic gas, where real phonons can be excited. Future phonon lasers could thus adequately be called phasers.

Collective oscillations in ultracold atomic gases

Using both fluid and kinetic descriptions, where repulsive forces between near by atoms are included, we discuss the basic oscillations and waves of a cloud of ultra-cold atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap. The existence of a hybrid mode, with properties similar to both plasma and acoustic waves is described in detail. Tonks-Dattner resonances for confined hybrid modes in a spherical cloud are discussed and the prediction of a nonlinear coupling between the dipole resonanc and the hybrid modes is considered. Landau damping processes and quasi-linear diffusion in velocity space are also discussed.

Stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscattering of collimated beams carrying orbital angular momentum

We study theoretically the exchange of angular momentum between electromagnetic and electrostatic waves in a plasma, due to the stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscattering processes. Angular momentum states for plasmon and phonon fields are introduced for the first time. We demonstrate that these states can be excited by nonlinear wave mixing, associated with the scattering processes. This could be relevant for plasma diagnostics, both in laboratory and in space. Nonlinearly coupled paraxial equations and instability growth rates are derived.

Two-stream instability in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We apply a kinetic model to predict the existence of an instability mechanism in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates. Our kinetic description, based on the Wigner formalism, is employed to highlight the existence of unstable Bogoliubov waves that may be excited in the counterpropagation configuration. We identify a dimensionless parameter, the Mach number at T = 0, that tunes different regimes of stability. We also estimate the magnitude of the main parameters at which two-stream instability is expected to be observed under typical experimental conditions.

Quantum Trivelpiece-Gould waves in a magnetized dense plasma

The dispersion relation for the electrostatic waves below the electron plasma frequency in a dense quantum plasma is derived by using the magnetohydrodynamic model. It is shown that in the classical case the dispersion relation reduces to the expression obtained for the well-known Trivelpiece-Gould (TG) modes. Attention is also devoted to the case of solitary waves associated with the nonlinear TG modes.
